I bought this GT72VR (GT72VR-6RE-033). So after 6 months of having this laptop. There's an issue with the screen. Color gradients look ugly, as if the screen was only in 16bits color mode (whereas every option in Windows and Nvidia config panels are set to 32bits). The problem is the same with a fresh Windows install, and completely disappears on external screens. I will be returning this model and getting a different one. I heard from MSI forums that this make and model happen to have this issue

Very pleased with this purchase. I bought this laptop to replace an eight year old laptop that could no longer keep up with the graphic demands of World of Warcraft. This model gives excellent performance on the highest game settings. Over clocking is intuitive with the included software. Presets for Turbo, Sport, Comfort and Eco modes and custom option as well. The boost fan is controllable by software as well as a button switch. Again both presets and custom modes available. Plenty of customization options for processor, cooling, sound, monitor and keyboard LEDs. This is probably not the best option for the neophyte as you will spend a significant amount of time updating software and drivers straight out of the box. OldNAchy has posted excellent instructions in his review for updating software and drivers. Be sure to read his review thoroughly. NOTE: when creating the recovery disk the 16GB USB 3.0 flash drive was not sufficient, I had to return to Best Buy for a 32GB USB 3.0 flash drive. You may want to take that into consideration if you intend to create your recovery disks on a flash drive. The laptop is thick as it must accommodate the discrete graphics card and additional cooling fans. This beast is also heavy, though it is inline with the previous gaming laptop it replaced. If you're looking for a laptop for school, web browsing and word processing, this machine is a bit over kill. But if you're looking for a solid gaming machine then this baby is it. In addition to the extensive updating of software and drivers required, I also had a little difficulty adjusting to the keyboard. The keyboard graphics are a little futuristic looking for me. The W, E and M keys all look like the same key just turned 90°. Additionally It has take me some time to get used to the spacebar as often don't hit it sufficiently to register the space. And while overall the laptop seems solid, the top of the case is very flimsy, though I don't see this being a functional problem. Just don't set anything heavy on the top when the case is closed (though you probably shouldn't do that anyway, regardless of how solid the case seems). Pros Very powerful gaming laptop with plenty of customization options. Discrete graphics card. Looks awesome—everyone wants one. Cons Extensive software and driver updating required out of the box. Lid seemed a little soft, even the slightest pressure on the top of the case and you can see the top of the case bowing. Took a while to get used to the keyboard. Overall I am very pleased with this laptop. At the time I purchased it I found it at an online competitor at $400 off. Best Buy honored the price match with no hassle. Even though the competitor offered an additional $100 rebate, I still chose to purchase through Best Buy as the convenience of dealing with a local store should I have any problems was worth more to me than the rebate. Not only would I recommend this to a friend, I also would purchase it again—at Best Buy of course. Lok'tar Ogar—For the Horde!

Awesome specs still not thrilled with Windows 10 but the rest of the machine is awesome. Definitely look up fixes if you run into anything buggy though. I've not run into any problems but some of stated they've had a problem when updating some of the drivers. Worth the small inconvenience, all my games play on highest specs with no problems at all.

Graphics are stunning with the 1060 GPU. Runs 60 fps on all titles I play (if not 120). System stays cool to the touch even with the most intense gaming I do (R6 siege). Sound quality is really good. Only slight issue with this was my steel series keyboard has an issue registering on the far right side of the keyboard. Took less then a week to get around that by just hitting slightly further toward center and now I don't even notixe.

Lots Of Setup Work But Worth It

I purchased this laptop to replace an older MSI 17.3 laptop. I use this laptop for normal processing as well as video capture and editing and the occasional gaming. With my experience with MSI products I knew what I was getting and there were no real surprises. There are good and not so good things about this model: The good: o With Windows loaded on the 256gb pcie SSD, startup is very fast. o After some fixing, the video is very nice. o The laptop runs fairly cool. With heavy processing the CPU and GPU fans kick in to keep temperatures reasonable. o The wireless adapter connects flawlessly to my home network and stays connected all day, even when the laptop is idle for lengthy periods of time (one change to driver properties that I will describe below.) o MSI provides a number of applications that allow for control/adjustment of video, audio, devices, diagnostics, tuning, etc. I do not consider these bloat ware but nice to haves to adjust and control the laptop. o The NVIDIA 1060 GPU is truly dedicated in this laptop. The Intel 6700HQ processor has an integrated graphics chip which has been disabled in this laptop model. This is a good thing. If not disabled, then Windows determines which GPU to use and that can lead to confusion on the part of the user and issues on the part of the laptop. The Not So Good: o The laptop is heavy almost 10 lbs., but I knew this. o The dark color lends itself to visible fingerprints, but I knew this. o The MSI supplied applications HAVE to be updated (more on this below) and not via the supplied DVD, but online. The webcam for example defaults to off and will not show up on the Device Manage list. The System Control Manager (SCM) application is required to turn it on, but will not work unless updated after Windows 10 Anniversary (1607) is installed, but I knew this. o After updating to the latest NVIDIA driver, a “dithering” effect is apparent in the screen display and a work around is required to eliminate it. Didn’t know about this one but the work around works, no pun intended. This will be described below. What I don’t know is how good the battery is. I use it exclusively plugged in. Now for the required updates: 1. Plug in the power adapter when you first power up the laptop. This will help charge the battery to 100%. The initial set up will take quite a while so the battery will definitely be charged when you are done. 2. When windows boots up there will be 2 popup windows, one to register the laptop and one to create a burn recovery disk. Leave these alone until after step 3 is performed. 3. After the initial setup and Windows boots up, go into Control Panel Power Options and set up how you want power to be handled. I recommend selecting never for shutdown and sleep when the laptop is plugged in as well as 100% brightness. Go to display and setup a screen saver. There will be “idle” times during this setup and update process. Also, if you use the laptop plugged in most or all of the time like me, this is invaluable. 4. Register the laptop – and create an MSI account if you don’t already have one. This will extend the warranty by 3 months. You will need a .pnf (pic) file of your receipt. This particular process can be a real pain so be patient. If you don’t feel like doing this right away, then select later and close window. 5. Create the Burn Recovery Disk. Highly recommended!!! A 16gb USB 3.0 removable disk is the best medium in my opinion. This recovery medium is the only way to get back to factory default. 6. Go into settings/Update and Recovery and execute all updates. Once of these should be the 1607 features update which is Windows Anniversary. Be patient, this will take a while. If any of the updates (prior to Anniversary) hangs (percentage not increasing over a good period of time) then that update will have to be implemented directly thru the Windows catalogue. Search on the “KB” reference and you should be able to find it. 7. After all updates, including Windows Anniversary complete then it is time to do the MSI updates. Go to MSI.com, select products, then GT Series under Gaming Laptops, then GeForce GTX 1060 under GPU SKU, then GT72VR Dominator, then Support (scroll down) and the Download tab will appear. I recommend downloading all the following and unzipping all the following before proceeding with the updates which will be listed in order. Note Winzip (or 7zip?) is required since all these packages are zipped. You can use the evaluation version of Winzip for this but will need to purchase it for future updates or other zipped downloads. The update order is listed in sequence below: 1. Bios. The installed Bios is not the latest. Follow instructions carefully for flashing the new BIOS. 2. This and the next few updates are under the Driver Tab. VGA (NVIDIA 375.03 driver package). 3. Audio driver:6.0.1.7960/Nahimic:2.3.10. Note: install the audio driver first then Nahimics 4. Card Reader. 5. Wireless LAN. 6. Touchpad. This one is interesting. Before doing this, go to Synaptics.com, search on touchpad driver support, select Touchpad Family, scroll down until you see TOUCHPAD DRIVER SUPPORT and click on explore. Select the first in the list – Windows 10 PS/2 & SMBUS Devices v19.0.19.1, download, unzip, and install. Then download Touchpad. This is required if you ever want to use a USB wireless mouse (like I do). The earlier version allows you to turn off the touchpad when a usb mouse is detected and the later version from MSI brings you up to date. However, if you download and install the MSI package without the former, you may not be able to turn off the touchpad. 7. Bluetooth. 8. USB 3.1. 9. Next to download are in the Utility tab. MSI Dragon Center. 10. MSI True Color. 11. Steel Series Engine 3. 12. Help Desk (optional). 13. System Control Manager (SCM). The updates are for the bios, drivers, and utilities that were developed after the laptop was introduced to market and some are required to work with Windows Anniversary. Now for the “little” issues: 1. There may be an issue between the wireless adapter and power management in Windows Anniversary that will result in the internet connection being lost and the adapter hanging. Shutting down and restarting will often correct the connection problem but sometimes a forced shutdown is necessary and this can happen occasionally during a large/long download. The work around is to select the wireless adapter in Device Manager, select Driver, select Power Management, then unchecking the box that allows the computer to turn off the adapter to save power. Not saying that the problem occurs with this model, but it does with other MSI laptops and it is always better to be safe than sorry. 2. The “dithering” video effect that happens with the latest NVIDIA driver can be overcome by doing the following as described by Aaron P. in his Amazon comment: “The screens do not recognize 8bit output color depth, 6 is the correct setting but the NVIDIA control panel by default sets it to 8 with no other option, and 75 MHz after the latest firmware upgrade. HERE IS THE FIX. The monitors actually function at a max of 100 mhz. In the NVIDIA control panel create a custom resolution, unblocking other resolution settings. Leave as 1920 X 1080 but change MHz to 100, hit test and it will come back successful and save the setting. it will automatically set itself to 6 BPC. The weird thing is if you now change it back to the original 75 MHz it now has 6 BPC as an option. Leave it on 100 MHz though as it makes all the videos and pictures look almost perfect. “ That is a lot of “stuff” to do and can seem overwhelming but the end result is worth it. Overall this is a really nice laptop and it helped that I got it on sale. I rated it 4 instead of 5 because of the level of work required to get it “right.” It took me about a day to complete all of the above, but as I said before, I knew what I was getting into. One thing to note here is that most laptops these days regardless of manufacturer require a lot of set up and user support is generally weak (I got the 2-year Geek Squad deal). Regardless, I do recommend this one for anyone needing a heavy, fast processing full HD laptop.

Does everything as described. When you purchase this computer please do as the first reviewer stated. The only part I wouldn't/didn't do was the BIOS update.

Im a hardcore gamer. I love this laptop. Im able to run GTA 5 and most games above 60fps. After 15min it tends to get very very warm. So i turn on the fan for 5min and it cools down quickly. I haven't had any problems with it so far. Going on 25 days with it. This laptop is very solid. I've gotten many good reviews from Many Pc gamers about its specs and they all said it was an amazing machine for it being a laptop.
