Good - but proprietary app market hurts it

For a $199 Tegra 3 Ice Cream Sandwich table that price is amazing, but don't be too blown away, the lower price is offset by Nabi's proprietary app market which you have to spend money in to get any apps that are worth while. The Nabi App market is EXTREMELY narrowed down and limited, there's a lot of "coming soon!" type things. All of the standard Google Apps such as Gmail are not available, and you can't get to the Google App Market at all. So if you're a parent who thinks they'll make use of this while your kid is not using it, about the only thing usable is the browser - which is stock Android. So you can do gmail and any web based activities somewhat that way. Also, if you don't have access to Wifi (like we didn't recently when Hurricane Sandy knocked our internet out) this tablet goes bonkers when your kid is attempting to use it because it keeps wanting to connect to the Nabi app market. One nice feature is that it does come with Skype, but when my 2 year old and I attempted to Skype with my wife who was away on a business trip she could barely see us because the only camera (front facing) is terrible in indoor lighting - I put a flashlight on my son's face nearly blinding him and she was still barely able to see him. But for a 2 year old toddler there is some redeeming value in a few apps they offer such as Peakaboo Barn, Itsy Bitsy Spider, and some of the puzzle games. By they way, you CANNOT get Disney Jr on here (the Best Buy in store reps told me otherwise, they were very wrong). Short story - having your toddler use this solid little unit with the nice protective bumper at $199 is better then having them break your $600+ iPad. It's "ok" at what it's meant for, but it certainly is not what I would call an amazing or must have product.

    Screen freezes

My kids (ages 5 & 2) both got tablets for Christmas because I was tired of them using my iPad. Three months later we had to cash in on the warranty because they had cracked the screens on both. We opted to replace them both with the Nabi 2 tablets. While the Best Buy employee was in the process of setting up the second tablet, the screen on the first one froze three times. I had to keep resetting it. I decided to switch it out while we were still in the store. The employee got that tablet set up, we got out to the car, and guess what...screen freezes. I called Best Buy from the parking lot. By this point we had been at the store for two hours and my kids were worn out...not to mention disappointed that after all that only one Nabi 2 was working! They told me to take it home, do any suggested upgrades, and if it was still a problem to bring it back tomorrow. Well, the screen has frozen four more times this evening. Is going back tomorrow. This is my last try. We heard such great things about the Nabi 2. My kids LOVE the one that works properly, but come on! A freezing screen that continually needs to be reset? That's just irritating. For $179 I expect a tablet screen that works, please!

Needs access to more apps that kids want

My son loves his Nabi 2. That said, he's quite disappointed when he can't play the same games he plays on mom and dad's phone or can't get games he sees advertised on TV such as some of the Disney Channel apps. Yes, you can install the amazon app store, but even that is lacking in app coverage these days. The game came with angry birds but there's no way to add any of the other AB games like the Star Wars one. Sure you can root it and do some other things but we already have trouble with some games from amazon not recognizing the Nabi hardware such as the tilt gyro. I've read that going this route will have you stumble across a lot of apps that won't recognize the hardware at all. Do not ever plan on contacting Nabi support. I contacted them to get the Nabi Sync working and the tech worked for a while and then finally said "Do a full reset of the device and that should fix it" and then hung up on me. Didn't fix it so big thumbs down to them. In the end, it's a good bit of hardware but the company's stranglehold on apps leaves it lacking and disappointing. The nail in the coffin was dealing with the company.

Overall if I had to choose I think my KINDLE is better with the exception of two things...it's more fragile though a ZAGG cover like I have on the NABI could help with this and the fact that you can just purchase on the spot apps, movies, books, etc without a mommy mode make it a little more adult vs child friendly. Otherwise for the money I kind of wished I had just bought my daughter her own KINDLE....we started giving up on NABI as we were unable to load our credit card onto their system disabling our ability over Christmas vacation and beyond to add more user friendly apps, books, etc for my daughter. Though NABI gave "coins" to help resolve this unforeseen issue which was good business on their part. Honestly haven't played with again lately as it is just aggravating, my husband said I should have just returned it.... I think the creators of NABI had great intentions and I suspect once they work out the kinks with their business partners it will be a useful tablet.

So far so good on this product. Of course, my 6 year old LOVES it. We have had it for about a month now and she constantly plays on it. Although, I will reserve as kids are kids until about the 6 month period. For the price we paid it has given her 5 times that amount in entertainment and learning. The learning curve for her age was a little difficult for use at first, at least for adding games and such, but she is starting to pick that up now. Lots of fun things to do on it, she already dropped it twice, had sticky stuff on it (aint no telling what) and absolutely no problems.. If there was a problem, the battery life is half way decent, and if the battery runs out there seems to be a problem until its over 25% charged?? It can blink and freak out if you let it get down too low, then try to plug it in.. At first we thought we were using the wrong USB to Plug dongle, but it uses the same voltage as the Iphone or Android ones, but it does this with its own, but after it has enough power it seems to stop.. That is the only thing keeping me from rating this above 3 stars.. Thanks!

I bought 2 Nabi 2's for Christmas; one for my daughter and one for my son. Both were opened and setup on Christmas morning, and that is where the trouble began. After registering both devices with our email addresses, we could not log onto the tablets. After multiple tries, I took to the Web. I discovered Nabi was having total server meltdown due to the number of parents that were registering devices. Their Facebook page was swamped with angry parents, all with the same problems. I made multiple posts and sent emails, which were either ignored or I was told to"have patience", which I did, for the first day. After 2 days of dealing with this, I was able to get them working with no customer support help at all. All in all, the tablet is a great tablet for kids, but I lost all confidence that and issues that may arise with it will not be resolved through customer support.

On all of the games and other programs I have had to have to rest the unit and reopen to get to work. This is the third unit I have that does the same thing. The need an update maybe? I don't know. But, it has become a fun machine that my child always wants then ends up screaming because it stops receiving input from the screen. This includes the games it came with. Angry Birds stops firing. Then the screaming starts. Thanks a lot NABI. FIX THIS! WARNING DO NOT BUY THIS SCREAM MACHINE UNTIL NABI ADDRESSES THIS ISSUE. I have a feeling it cam in the update they released. Just guessing though.

Bought this for my son b/c he is always taking our phones to play games. Thought it would be great for him to have all his games on his own device. The free books were a great added feature as well. I ended up returning this however after the salesman failed to mention that this Android device does not have Google Play. Nabi has their own market with inferior games for a 9 year old. We couldn't find anything he liked. Ended up getting an open box Kindle Fire instead.

Tablet is great for kids. I dislike not being able to use google play market, they really screwed everyone over on that one. But what you can and are able to use is for is ok. My kids love it but we have to go every where with the charger. I have an iPad 3 witch I use more then they do the Nabi and I charge the iPad every 3 to 4 days. I mean come on what is up with any android device and it not being able to hold a good charge?

If your looking for a tablet for your child this one is great however the NABI support team is useless! Still waiting on a reply for my issue. I did however take it back to Best Buy in Chesterfield and it was in the time frame for return and with NO PROBLEM the team took it back (amazing service i almost cried!!) and helped me with a new tablet at the new price! In order to avoid future stress I did purchase the protection plan through Best buy since the NABI company is terrible with customer service!

I bought this product for my toddler who lives to use the iPad and iPhone, but this product did not offer the same kind of apps ( I know there's a difference between android OS and Apple) which is not the manufacturer's fault but this tablet would freeze and close apps for no reason. Also when I tried to change apps ( but new ones) I wasn't able to find them anywhere! Granted I am not as tech savvy as my husband but he wasn't able to either! This product is a great idea that needs to be perfected.

The Nabi 2 provides a nicely catered experience which allows parents to limit exposure to apps/sites they would not want their children to be using, while still allowing parents to use it (in a separate mode) as a fully-featured tablet for their own entertainment/purposes if desired. It features good processing speed and performance as well as a adequate battery life, but as it is less intuitive than some other tablets, I would not recommend it for children under 4.

We bought it for our three year old so I could get my galaxy 2 back, she seems to really like it other than she wants to play with my phone since I can not seem to transfer any of the apps purchased for her at the play store. The big catch is the 200 dollars worth of "free" apps, sure the games are free but all the educational apps, the ones that came for free, false. cant access apps without extra purchase.

Thought it would be perfect since it cost so much, liked the games, saftey features. but have had to return one already, best buy did give another for it. (good review for best buy) Now the other one that was not returned is still having issues, hard to turn on off, have to repeat this all the time. Could have purchased others for less $$, but thought that this would be the best product, not as good as expected

I purchased for my 6 year old son, who has played with IPAD's and Kindles prior to the Nabi. We have had it almost 2 weeks and still cannot access the app store. He does not like the preloaded games, they are a little too immature for him. I cannot figure out how to "unblock" certain websites so he can play games. I would return the item and get him a Kindle if I could.

This is too difficult for a 3 year old to use. Even when they start playing a game, it's so easy for them to accidentally hit a part of the screen that takes them away from the game to a different screen and it just frustrates them. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone under the age of 5.

Not the product I was explained when I purchased. I bought this for my 3 year old nephew because his brother has an Ipad mini, its very difficult to access the internet. Unable to load apps not kid friendly at all. Not what I was expecting to get from and Android Tablet for kids.

Was brought as a gift for grandchild. Did not work, had a white screen. Tablet was charged completely and still did not work. Was able to take back and get a new one. Maybe it was a bad batch. Replaced without problems. Buy warranty if you purchase this tablet.

The tablet is nice however having to approve every webpage is just too much. I do like parental controls however there has got to be a simpler way to approve the webpages. I'm certain I will love the tablet once it's all set for my child.
