The Nanoleaf Elements Wood Look Smarter Kit (with seven panels) is brilliant in both looks and function. First, I love the wood-grain look, which actually varies from panel to panel. Second, I love the shape...the octagon shape allows for simple and yet elegant design capabilities. And third, I absolutely love the various light settings of each panel. But, I'm getting ahead of myself. Let me start at the beginning. I got the Nanoleaf Elements Wood Look Smarter Kit with (7) panels. When I unpacked the box, I noticed it contained the panels, a power supply, and connectors that serve to not only connect each panel, but also supplies power to each connected panel. There is a rather simple but sufficient quick-start guide that shows how to set up the light panels. The process is quite easy and simple. The most difficult aspect of the entire process is determining the pattern you want to use. Each side of each panel is capable of connecting to another panel, so the possible patterns are limitless. I decided on a fork-like design. The next thing I had to do was to determine which wall to put it on. I discovered that the initial placement was simply placing the connectors on the appropriate sides and removing the double-sided tape on the back of the panel and pressing it on the wall. The directions say to rub the center in a circular motion for 30 seconds. This seemed a bit excessive, but nevertheless I followed their recommendation. I then placed the connectors in the appropriate locations on the next two panels, and removed the backing from the double-sided tape. I did use a level to hold the first panel in place while I added the second panel, and after that there was no more need for the level seeing as the double-sided tape held the first two panels in the correct orientation. Repeated until all panels were installed. Here is where I ran into a little glitch...one of the panels did not light up. At first I was aggravated because these panels work like Christmas lights...if one light doesn't work, the succeeding panels will not work either. Much to my delight I discovered that the panels will actually come loose from the double-sided tape. There is a "pin" that pops into a mounting hole, and using an even yet somewhat forceful pulling, the panels will pop off. I checked the connector, re-secured it, and put the panel back on. This took a couple of tries because I couldn't see exactly where the hole and pin were, but in a short time had it reconnected and working. I might point out that Nanoleaf uses a very high quality double-sided tape, and once it is on your wall, well, it's there. So, after plugging it in, taking care of the connector, and replacing the panel, I downloaded the Nanoleaf app. What a great app this is! Install and setup are a breeze, and the interface is top-notch. There are a boat-load of options to choose from, including patterns, brightness, and even the ability to develop your own lighting programs. The lights also have the capability to connect to Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, and google assistant. Overall, I think this is by far a superior quality item. It is nouveau riche, and will fit in nicely with both modern and older home decor. I've only had it up a couple of days, and have already had a ton of comments and compliments. I look forward to adding to the seven included tiles, and creating quite a piece of artwork. In spite of all this greatness, I found I could not give it a five-star rating for one reason...the double-sided tape. Once it is attached to the wall, it is pretty much there for good. It is such a high-quality tape that I feel it will actually pull part of the wall with it if I should ever decide to move it or rearrange the pattern when I add more panels. I certainly understand the desire to make sure the panels do not come loose, and I'm not really sure what a good alternative would be, but this is really quite an issue, or at least I can foresee it being an issue in the future. This became quite evident when I had to fix the issue with the panels not lighting up. With all that being said, I would still wholeheartedly recommend the Nanoleaf Elements Wood Look Smarter Kit to anyone who wants to add a spectacular and unique lighting system to their home. This is a product that will never lose its appeal.

The price is nuts! No precise network connect instructions. Definitely returning. Expected much more for the price. Nanoleaf- you can do better & you know it. Update your controller with better components, the price your asking warrants it.

These lights are great for adding natural lighting to a room, without being distracting. Great for a bedroom or a living room. Even though they don't display color, they have all the features that other Nanoleaf panels have.

I was hoping to class up my desk area and get better lighting with these things, but they failed on both counts. The material they are made of looks super cheap, the light falloff at the corners makes them look even cheaper, and they definitely dont get bright enough to replace the table lamp setting 2 feet further away.

Hey Ryan, We are so sorry for the trouble with your Nanoleaf! The Nanoleaf Elements that you have are actually made with a more relaxed wood look, but they should still be able to be bright, with Color Temperatures of Ambient Whites, 1500-4000K. You can also adjust the brightness in the App or in the Controller. Let us know if you have further questions!

I really want to give five stars because it's a gift from my wife, but it really disAppoints me. After using it for several months, the lights often stop and the app can't be used, so I have to turn it off and on again manually.

Hello ASUS, sorry for the trouble, there may have been updates that were missing or that have caused some issued, but no worries, we should still be able to help get this resolved. Do you have an iOs device? Have you also tried to do a soft reset on the Nanoleaf Elements? Can you try to unplug your Elements from the power source. While holding the Power and Brighten Buttons, plug the Power Supply back into power. Continue holding the buttons down until the button LEDs on the Controller come on. Once the LEDs come on, quickly release the buttons. Let us know if that helps!

Fun product let down by the official app

I've had some smart outlets before, but this was my first jump into smart lights. I use these exclusively with Apple HomeKit. Getting it connected to HomeKit was simple, just make sure your device is on a 2.4ghz network, otherwise it won't be able to find the controller. Once setup and added, I could easily add it to my basic home automation. I didn't need the Nanoleaf app to get it working with basic functionality. HomeKit will let you adjust the brightness and color, but that's about it. The Nanoleaf app is fine, but I find it to be oversimplified for the sake of minimalism, and unless I just skipped through the tool-tips accidentally, it doesn't do a good job of explaining what the icons mean. For example, when selecting a scene, there are icons of a bucket/pail, water drop, and music note. Now the music note is self explanatory, it will follow with your music and light up accordingly. I assume the pail means a solid color, since the gradient bar is just one color. The water-drop though I guess means it's a predefined scene, but I haven't a clue as to what the gradient bar is telling me, other than some colors will show up more frequently, though I couldn't guess the pattern from the names. The icon choices just seem odd to me, I'm not sure how a water drop relates to a dynamic scene, rain maybe? No idea. You can tell the app what the orientation of your setup is, so scenes play correctly, it doesn't tell you anywhere that you need to use two fingers to actually move it around. "Touch and swipe" gestures is the only mention of how to move the orientation around. It took me longer than I'd care to admit to figure out to use two fingers. To change a solid color you tap on water drop, which contradicts the purpose of the water-drop icon in the scene selection pane, you're then greeted with a full-color gradient wheel by default. Every. Single. Time. The Element doesn't support that, but the app will definitely let you try and pick one of the colors. The wheel has two parts, color selection and what appears to be an indicated hue/tone for your selected color. But that's not the case, the center section is for brightness, which is redundant because the brightness slider is maybe an inch above the wheel. There are also per-defined color swatches down below the wheel, which don't do anything with an Elements product, since it doesn't support colors, but there they are anyway. You can dig into the device settings further and setup touch controls (they mean on the lights themselves, not the app. Again, not very clear on directions there), where a motion can make adjustments to brightness, scene, etc. Scroll a bit further, and there's a setting group that says "Remote Control: Enable Thread" Uh what? You can't tap on Enable Thread, but the "i" tool-tip tells you "The Nanoleaf Remote cannot directly control Shapes/Elements when Thread Border Routing is enabled. Reverting to Remote Mode will turn off Thread." Great, that's cleared up now, thank you. :eyeroll: Ok so I've said enough about the app itself. Honestly, it's just bad, or at a minimum, they're trying to cram a ton of features into it, but don't really do a good job of explaining how everything works. Plus showing features that require some other setting to be toggled, or colors that aren't even supported, takes away from the enjoyment of the product itself. Honestly, this annoys me a lot more than it should. It's just a silly app. If you're running HomeKit, just stick to that if all you want is to use it as an additional light and aren't interested in scenes or music support. For the physical product itself. I quite enjoy it. I have mine set to turn on when I get home, but only between certain hours, my apartment is very dark at night, and annoyingly the only light switch controlled outlet is 20 feet away from the door, yay 1950s construction. Installation was easy, but I wish they included more than one extra tape pad. I created the design ahead of time on the floor, and was happy with it. Until I started putting it up, so I had to burn the only extra pad that's included. Full commit at that point. I'm not super thrilled with out it turned out, but it's fine. I'm sure command strips can be used as an alternative. My only gripe with the physical product, is I wish there was more variation in the wood grain. Each panel looks different, and that's great, but the grain on each panel only runs point to point, it would be nice if some of them ran flat to flat. That's just me though, not everyone would want that, which is probably why it isn't an option. Overall, I think they're a great smart light, they look great, offer ample light and can easily be connected to HomeKit. However, the app is in my opinion, not very good. Skip it all together if you only care about static lights and colors, you can do all of that from HomeKit.
