Roomba is junk compared to Neato

We have a Neato but upgraded and bought a Roomba i7. I ran the i7 one time and returned it the next day. There was hardly any suction and it seemed to only collect surface debris and nothing embedded in the carpet. Bought the D7 neato set it up and ran it. Keep in mind it wasn't even 24 hours since the roomba ran the whole house. The Neato's bin was completely FULL of dust and debris you would expect a vacuum of this caliber to pick up. Once again Neato did not disappoint. I think Roomba has good reviews only because of their name and no one is the wiser because it's the only robot vac they have ever had. Don't buy Roomba, or any other, go with the Neato.

Not sure if I'm a mediocre gift-giver or what, but this appears to be one of the best gifts my wife has ever received. We have darker-colored hard wood floors throughout our downstairs that can show dirt easily and requires a lot of effort to keep clean...this Botvac eliminates the regular chore of sweeping/vacuuming the floors and does the job relatively quickly and with less noise than I was expecting. It also navigates the house and obstacles well. The only few complaints that come to mind are: a) it does have to return to the docking station to charge itself once before it fully finishes the job (better battery life would've been nice), b) the dirt bin could be bigger c) the first unit was defective, but the return process was painless and efficient...the replacement unit works fine thus far.

I purchased this top of the line Neato D7 to test against our Roomba 960. Unfortunately the Neato D7 failed in almost every test. While the D7 did manage to find its base most of the time. It did not clean our 800 sf all hardwood floors adequately. It routinely left debris behind, and did not clean all the way to the edges. As a result we had dust and debris along all of the baseboards, and often in the middle of the floor. The D7 got stuck on the same area rug 6 of the 15 times we used it. Once in a corner with no obstructions. The Roomba 960 routinely cleaned the same area completely. Comparatively the Roomba became stuck twice over 3 months of daily use in the same area. The D7 has promise and the ability to define no go zones within the app is a great option the Roomba lacks. Unfortunately the application was inconsistent and not intuitive. The Roomba 960 performed consistently better and would be my choice at this price point.

We're very sorry to hear about this experience you've had. This wouldn't be typical for our D7 Connected so it sounds like your robot may have had an issue. Please email us at rosie@neatorobotics.com and we'll contact you.

    Beware the brush bar failures

Good vacuum while it worked. Worked great for 5 months. But then I started to get errors. Often times it would get temporarily stuck up on something and then wouldn't complete the floor plan cause it would forget where it was in my small home. But the real problem is the flawed brush bar. The one end is semi sealed, it will get dust and debris in it. This will make it hard to rotate, so difficult that the machine will error out. It does not come apart easily and isn't meant to be fixed. I bought a second bar and had the same issue within a month. In my opinion it's a good vacuum with great suction but the flawed brush bar needs a redesign.

Thank you for your feedback. Our brushes are interchangeable so a simple brush replacement with an older brush design may work for you. The new brush design has been extensively tested vs the main competitors and did perform best in class.

After looking to get our first vacuum robot last year and going over reviews, nothing seemed just right, but the D7 feature set was mentioned in a few reviews. So I signed up to be notified when it would be released, and I ordered it the day I got notified. After a week with it, I am now ordering my second one for our second floor. We have concrete floors and rugs, and the D7 does a great job cleaning. We have 5 birds and 2 dogs, so plenty of cleaning needed. When I first got it I vacuumed first with my regular vacuum and then let the D7 loose. I was amazed at how much dust and dirt and hair it managed to pick up even after I "cleaned". Now, I have it going once a night and my floors always are clean (and feel clean on bare feet). I just ordered my second one for our second floor (all carpet) where the birds live, after trying it out and seeing how well it picked dirt and debris there, too. The mapping feature is amazing, and I had read that other robot vacuums seem to have problems with black or dark floors or carpets. We have both dark concrete and black carpet, and it has no problems with it. It also properly recognized the stairs and didn't fall down. Haven't even had a need to use the no-go line feature yet. I would definitely recommend it.

Hi Polyport! Thank you for such a comprehensive and honest review! We're so proud of the D7's features and capabilities. We hope now with the extra time spent not cleaning you can spend more time with your 5 birds and 2 dogs! Thanks again for this review! Your Neato Team

We have had this vacuum for over a month now and it is scheduled to clean our house 3 times per month. We were coming from a Roomba that didn't impress at all. The Roomba's logic was awful. It would hit certain areas 6 times and others were left untouched. It didn't have enough battery life to clean the entire house and we would find it in a back bedroom dead. The suction on it was also pretty poor compared to this Neato. It was the dumbest smart vacuum I'd ever seen. Now on to the Neato. The app is great and easy to use. I was able to generate a map of my house and set my boundaries for the vacuum very quickly. It's on a schedule now to clean the main common areas of the house 3 days a week at one time and the master bedroom 2 days a week at another time. We have it clean the common areas at 11pm when we are sleeping. With our door closed we can't even hear it and it can function in complete darkness due to its laser navigation instead of cameras. The suction is amazing. I cant believe that much dust and dirt gets in our carpenters and on the floors in just a matter of days. If it can't finish the entire schedule on one charge it returns to the base to charge and then completes the schedule. It's every bit the smart device you would expect. I have 0 complaints about this vacuum. It's incredibly smart and the navigation is amazing.

Great software, cleaning power, and battery life

Neato's Botvac D7 connected brings together a strong blend of hardware, software, and market experience to provide a robot vacuum that's as close to perfect as any I've tested over the last five years. Pros: - Excellent overall hardware design, with a low profile and wide brush up front. - Intelligent and efficient navigation. - Good cleaning ability. - Traverses boundaries between rugs and floors without getting confused or losing orientation - Best battery life I've yet seen in a robot vacuum. - Bullet proof WiFi connection. - Excellent mapping functions with software boundaries. - Excellent smartphone app user experience. - Easy and reliable software update process. Cons: - Lack of on-unit screen means you need to open to app to read any messages or errors. - The dirt bin could be bigger. - Suction in "eco" mode tends to move some dirt around rather than suck it up. Design: The D7 is attractively finished and combines a wide square front (with a brush than spans almost the full width) with a circular back for a very efficient shape. There's also a small side brush that catches dirt along the edge of the floor. The low profile allows it to fit under beds and many couches without trouble. The matt black finish of the areas which come into contact with walls and furniture is a wise move that helps to avoid visible scratches. We have an original Neato from many years ago and the finish still looks good. Removing the brushes for cleaning is relatively easy and a simple wipe down of the exterior and sensors keeps things running OK. The dirt bin could be larger and the relatively small opening can sometimes get clogged if large items are sucked up or if you have a lot of carpet fluff. Not a deal breaker, but know that for large floors you may need to empty the bin after an hour or so. Performance: Vacuum performance is excellent on the default "turbo" mode, while still offering 2 hours or more of run time. "Eco" mode is quieter and reduces suction for a longer run time and a still reasonable clean, although in this mode some larger pieces of paper or waste tend to get pushed around vs. picked up. The unit had no trouble cleaning the approximately 1300 sq ft of our floor plan on a single battery charge. In doing so it easily traversed wood floors, carpets, and rugs without issue. The ability to cover the floor on a single charge is a huge benefit, since recharging during cleaning runs can triple the cleaning time for most units. Software: The mobile app and robot firmware are mature and very well executed, with a friendly interface and very quick responses. I did not encounter a single issue on my Android handset with WiFi dropouts, lost mapping data, or app crashes. There was one case where the robot failed to correctly dock at the end of cleaning and rebooted itself before trying again. The software is feature rich, providing robust scheduling and an outstanding mapping feature that creates a floorplan of your home and allows the user to set "no go" zones by drawing red lines across areas of the map. This is the best and most reliable implementation of this idea that I've yet seen in a robot vacuum. The lines are easy to draw and easy to edit. I tested use of these "no go" zones and it worked perfectly. It would be great to be able to define rooms by name and clean just specific parts of the house, but perhaps that can come in a software update later. Conclusion: The Neato Botvac D7 continues Neato's record of producing smart, capable robot vacuums. It's combination of navigation, cleaning power, great software features, and outstanding battery life make it easy to recommend.

    this little robot is NEATO!

My Neato Botvac D7 arrived a little more than a week ago. This is the first robotic vacuum I've owed and wasn't sure about this type of product in general. I wasn't sure how it would stand up to my Dyson that I've owned for 5+ years. Overall, I'm loving this little machine! When the box arrived, I was surprised by the size of the box. I guess I expected it to be a little smaller and not as heavy, no big deal though. After unboxing this beauty and trying to find a good place for the charging dock, I had the robot getting ready for its first use. The set up was simple & quick. The steps included charging the vacuum up, downloading the Neato App, & connecting the robot to your WiFi network. The app gives good step by step instructions on how to establish the connection. All in all, the charging took a little bit of time but the rest of the set up took about 10 mins. Now that the robot was ready to go, all it takes it a press of a button on your smartphone and the vacuum does the rest. The first thing I noticed was how quiet the Botvac was compared to the much larger Dyson I've. My dog barely noticed that the vacuum was running, when usually she's nowhere to be found during vacuuming. The next thing I noticed was that the vacuum was running along the edges of any room that it went into. It was moving pretty slowly while doing this, mapping the room so that it knew where it could go and where it couldn't go. The Botvac easily transferred between carpeted rooms and rooms with harder floors (I've tile and wood in some rooms). Once the vacuum had the edges mapped, this thing zoomed back and forth, dodging all obstacles that it could get stuck on. It was quite amazing to watch the first time. After it cleans all the area's it thinks it can get to, it simply stops vacuuming and returns to it base to charge back up for the next time. The app lets you know that the vacuum made it to the charging base successfully and provides you with a map of the area cleaned. While I'ven't used the feature yet, once your living space has been mapped, the app does give you the ability to set up boundaries to prevent the robot from going into certain areas. In the week+ that I've been using the Botvac, it has got stuck once, which was much less than I expected. When the robot gets stuck, the app sends you an alert to tell you and shows you on the floor map where the vacuum is stuck. You simply go there and move the vacuum a little bit to clear the object blocking the path, press a button, and off it goes. The app also alerts you when the bin is full with dirt, dust, hair, & whatever else its cleaning up. Some things I noticed are important are that the placement of charging base & that the collection bin is likely smaller than any regular vacuum you are using. The charging base needs to be in a area that give the vacuum room to start its cleaning process, and also room to get back onto the base for charging. It also needs to be somewhere that gives a little resistance so that the robot doesn't knock it back when returning from a cleaning, otherwise you might not have a charged vacuum next time you go to clean. With the collection bin, the first time I ran the Botvac, it did fill up a couple times while cleaning. The app does send you an alert when this happens, but you do have to empty it before continuing. The last 5 days, the bin has not been filling up to the point that the robot had to stop operating since I've been vacuuming every day. My house is on the smaller side, so I'd imagine that a larger house might require emptying the bin more than I've. Overall this is a great little machine. I can come home and vacuum daily without scaring the animals, we all barely even notice that its running. It's nice having clean carpets and floors with little work everyday. Glad I got this little Botvac.
