    The best robotic vacuum you can buy

Neato, more than any other brand, seems to be the company that seems to have finally solved the issue. The D7 is the top of the line robotic vacuum in the series from Neato. All their vacuums offer similar features with laser mapping and interchangeable parts but what sets the D7 apart is what are called virtual No-Go lines. As the D7 vacuums a room, it starts by vacuuming the perimeter and finding the walls. When it gets to a certain point in the room it will stop and rotate the use the laser to map everything out. What is great about this is as it goes around the perimeter it picks up all the debris near the baseboards and then quickly vacuums the interior. It systematically vacuums room by room, using narrow passages to define what is a room. Unlike other vacuums, this technique means it reliably vacuums every accessible area every time and doesn’t get stuck in a loop vacuuming the same spot over and over. Not only that, but if it must navigate around an object it still has no problem vacuuming straight lines. This is a refreshing change from other brands that often seem to be obsessed with cleaning the same room or vacuuming random diagonal lines after avoiding a piece of furniture. As part of the mapping technology are what are called virtual No-Go lines. After the D7 has had a chance to vacuum your entire house at least once it will present a very detailed map of your house, including square footage, and allow you to define what are called No-Go zones. To create these zones, you just draw a line with your finger to block off an area. Once saved, the D7 will avoid vacuuming those areas. No need for barrier tape or towers. The system works very reliably and about the only downside is that it only works when you start cleaning via the app. For now, if you initiate vacuuming via Alexa the No-Go lines aren’t used. If for some reason you need to create barriers outside the app, the D7 does come with conventional roll of magnetic strip. The included manual is lean on details of maintenance, but information is readily available on the internet. Once you see how to do it, the process is actually very simple with no tools required, except the included cleaning brush. If you unsure of maintenance intervals, a handy guide is inside the waste bin compartment. The air filter, combo brush, and spin brush are quick an easy to change. If you have pets with a large amount of hair, it would be best to run the vacuum more frequently. For the first week as it vacuums you may find it gets clogged with pet hair in the intake tube to the waste bin. Thankfully with a straight vacuum path through the D7, cleanup is very easy. After you establish a schedule for vacuuming and the D7 catches up you might be able to have it clean the entire house while only emptying the waste bin at the end. As mentioned before, the D7 is excellent at vacuuming straight lines in carpet to give a freshly vacuumed look. If you prefer more distinct carpet lines, a different brush bar is available as well at the expense of being less versatile on varied surfaces. If you have a deep pile carpet, the D7 refreshingly is excellent at traversing very tall thresholds. It had no trouble climbing up the edge of a deep pile carpet. However; if you have a deep shag carpet you might find the smaller brush bar might not clean as deep as you want. That said, for deep shag carpets your best bet might be a traditional upright vacuum. The D7 has a quiet and turbo mode. The quiet mode is certainly quieter but not to the point you could comfortably watch TV with it running in the same room. The suction overall is very good. Regardless, robotic vacuums shine when they can vacuum regularly. Although the suction has improved, they just can’t compete with an upright on a single pass. By scheduling it to vacuuming regularly, the vacuum gradually makes progress and will keep with a clean floor that stays looking clean all the time. Long ago, higher end robotic vacuums evolved to stop wandering aimlessly around the room to vacuum and learned to vacuum in systematic straight lines. Up until recently what had not been fixed was how they would slam into your furniture and rub up against walls as they finally learned to vacuum straight. Refreshingly, the D7 is smart enough to avoid hitting things constantly. On the default settings it will still occasionally rub walls, but a nice feature is hidden in the cleaning settings that can fix even that. It’s called Extra Care Navigation. When enabled, it will keep about a ¼ inch gap from objects and let the spin brush pick up in that area. This allows the D7 to gingerly avoid touching any of your furniture while cleaning thoroughly. It also helps prevent it from going under certain chairs and tables that would tend to cause it to get trapped. It might mean an occasional light, manual touchup is needed but the tradeoff is well worth it. Even with this extra care navigation and ability to climb higher rugs there is still one weak area of the D7. Because it can climb high ledges you might find it will dutifully try to clean the bases of certain items such as speaker stands or floor lamps. As it climbs up the base it will get stuck. A neat feature is as it gets stuck it can extend the wheels and try to back off the obstruction. In the case of these bases though, it just returns right back for another pass. A simple addition of a No-Go line fixes this making it only a minor inconvenience but one to know nonetheless. Another area that has cause problems in the past is how previous robotic vacuums handled getting stuck or even lost. With how advanced the D7’s mapping technology is, getting lost is a thing of the past. Even if it gets stuck or clogged you can lift it up, fix the problem, and set it back within two feet of where it was, and it is able to continue and even find its way back home. In fact, in nearly two weeks of daily vacuuming the D7 is the first vacuum to never have an issue finding it’s way back to the charging base. One oddity of the D7 is when you decide to stop a cleaning session. Regardless of if you press stop or pause, it will not return home. If it is in the middle of the cleaning cycle it isn’t a big deal. You just press dock and it cancels the cleaning. Where is can be a bit odd is if, say for instance, you are watching a movie and it starts the cleaning process. You must wait a few minutes into the cleaning for it to recognize where it is at, so it can find the base and allow the dock button to activate. You could press stop and just put it back to the base yourself but oddly it seems to get stuck on the dock if manually placed there. As with all oddities of the D7, this is very minor and has an easy workaround. Overall, the Neato D7 is arguably the best robotic vacuum on the market even if just for the excellent laser mapping technology. It still has room for improvement but, unlike other brands, the flaws are so small that the Neato vacuums really do end up saving you time since they don’t require constant human intervention. Once your routine is set up, the only human intervention required is to empty the dust bin and replace some parts every few months. If you are in the market for a robotic vacuum, it’s hard to go wrong with the Neato D7.

    This was our first foray into the world of robotic vacuums, and it has been a great experience so far. While we haven't completely abandoned our first generation Dyson DC07, it is good to let that hand vac rest its old bones while the Botvac takes on more of the day-to-day chores. Out of the box, the Botvac was extremely easy to set up, and my wife took a special pleasure in naming her new ward Auntie Pattie when she downloaded and installed the app, which was equally simple and user friendly. From first appearances, I loved the 'D' shaped design, it stood out from the standard round build on competitor units, and that seems to give this unit an edge in being able to get tighter to baseboards and flat surfaces. This shape allows for a long rotating head up front similar to what you would find in a hand held vac, with a smaller round rotating brush that works to kick up anything stuck in the corners, which is a great design. Really like the brush metal plating on top, as well as the plastic bumper that allows it to gently figure out what it is navigating while not getting nicked up, or nicking any furniture up. The top plate comes right up to uncover the dustbin, which could definitely stand to be a bit bigger. LED indicators on top show cleaning mode, battery/power & WiFi connectivity, all good info to see, but the app is where this unit shines. After initially letting the unit charge overnight, we cut it loose to sort out the main level of our house, which is about 1000 s.f. Watching via the app how it 'learns' the house was pretty amazing, as it maps out its travels and you can instantly see where the 'voids' are in its cleaning path on a graphic representation of the floor plan it creates while cleaning. While the app allows us to create boundary lines (a great feature), it sensed our stairs to the lower level and didn't progress on a death plunge to the basement, it just went along to clean the rest of the upper level and ignored the drop. This unit can struggle a bit with chairs and cords, as all robotic vacs will, but it 'programmed' us to have better cord management, and to pull out chairs when we were leaving the house, a very small price to pay in time and effort which allowed for easy remote cleanings. It gets under furniture it can clear without pause, and we have yet to see it get really stuck. If you take the time to learn where it sees a challenge, you can make minor adjustments that will allow it to flourish. In Eco-mode for a daily clean, the Botvac works really well with crumbs and dirt, as well as dog hair (we have a long-haired beast that sheds a full version of itself every week) without struggle, and on a battery charge of roughly 1 hr 45 mins. It did ignore some larger scraps of paper, but on the whole it tackled an area with multiple floor materials (carpet, hardwoods, area rugs and tile in the bathroom) with gusto and with equally clean results. In turbo mode (great for spot cleaning for individual rooms/spaces before guests/mother-in-laws arrive) it churned out a great cleaning on about a 30 minute battery charge before needing to dock. The only challenge we've seen is that this unit can use a low-power internal alarm that forces it back to the base in time. Ours fought the good fight like a soldier, and died in the field twice without getting home. Seems like a simple routine that could be written into the code to allow it to get back to a charge and live to fight another day. As noise levels go, it is pleasantly low on Eco, and expectedly louder in Turbo, no great shakes either way to us as we expect some noise when cleaning. Maintenance is fairly simple with brushes that are easy to access and comb out, an easily accessed air filter and the aforementioned top-access dustbin. Simple, as life should be with a robotic maid. Many pros with this unit that we will be enjoying for the foreseeable future, vacuuming on the whole isn't something anyone really looks forward to, and Auntie Pattie delivers a deserved break from that action for me and my wife. The dustbin could be larger, but I suspect Neato knows that and provided that largest the unit could accommodate, not sure what sacrifice in design would need to be made to make it significantly bigger, but I suspect the product engineers do and made it as large as they could. I can't really ding them for that because, well, they made it so I'm not vacuuming anymore. The app control is next level stuff, being able to vacuum while at work with the touch of a button does actually make me smile, and the mapping and learning component is something you just aren't going to find in many other units. Last but not least, our dog has had a long standing adversarial nemesis in the hand-held vacuum, which he runs from as if the devil itself was in pursuit. The Botvac earned a few curious glances, but pup walks around it with ease, and most importantly, without fear. Two paws up.

    This is my first foray into robot vacuums, and I'm glad to see how far they have come. The old robo-vacuums were clumsy, slow, and just cleaned OK. The Botvac D7 on the other hand has been wonderful. I haven't felt the need to go back over the carpet with my regular vacuum, and the straight lines look great. I've been using the D7 for a few weeks now, and I have yet to have any issues. My house has 2 small children and 2 short hair cats, and the D7 keeps up just fine. The initial setup was pretty straightforward. The hardest part was locating the dock in a space with 3 feet of clearance all around. I ended up putting it in my guest bedroom, while not ideal it has worked out pretty well. I am using an older Android Tablet to control the unit since that is always in the house (and I have a...Windows Phone :[ still). The app and the robot connected straight away (follow the quick start guide, and you will be fine) - I named mine Bender. You first have to run an initial clean of the house in order to build your map. I picked up everything and set my house up like it would be on cleaning days (this is recommended). The D7 bumped and twirled around my house for about 45 minutes before it finished. My house is a split level, so the cleaning area for upstairs is only about 450 sq ft. Also, I cautiously sat at the top of my stairs while the D7 was finding its way around - it's supposed to detect dropoffs and stairs, but I wanted to be there just in case. In the end it was fine, no Thelma and Louise launching off a cliff. After it was done I had it run another clean in order to setup the No-Go lines. This time it only took 35 minutes to run around. In these first 2 runs I only came across 2 issues. The first was the D7 got "stuck" in its initial run near the top of the stairs. It knew the edge was there, but for whatever reason it determined that it couldn't safely turn around right there after it bumped into the banister molding at the top of the steps. It called for help, so I picked it up and reset it about a foot away. The second issue arose during the second cleaning. The D7 went under a bed that is about a 1/4" too low. It managed to squeeze under but it couldn't make it out. I lifted the bed up slightly, and the D7 made its escape. After the second run I setup my No-Go lines (screenshot attached). I lined out a few areas, and cordoned off the 2 spots where the D7 got stuck. I put a line even with the edges of the banister molding (about 2 inches from the edge of the steps), and around the bed it got stuck under. After that, no issues. The No-Go lines work really well, and are much better than the magnetic strips. I also No-Go'd my bathroom, which was more convenient than remembering to close the doors. I have yet to come close to the overall runtime of this unit (I think its 2 hrs in ECO), and 1 cleaning just about fills up the dustbin (darn cats). I'm thinking about just letting it run in Turbo mode, but I haven't got around to toggling that setting. Noise wise, the D7 isn't too bad (note: in ECO mode). It's much quieter than my stick vacuum, so it doesn't bother me if I run it while at home. The app is pretty easy to navigate, and I haven't had any issues there. I am planning on picking up a Google Home device mostly to use the voice control for the D7 - it will feel nice to order around a little robot. I have fiddled around with the manual control setting. It's kind of cool to drive the D7 around, but the controls are just a little hard to master and input lag makes it difficult to be really accurate. Its a cool feature though, and my kids love it. Other thoughts: There are a few things I wish the D7 did. The No-Go lines are a game changer feature, but I wish they could be expanded upon. It would be nice to have a room sectioning feature, like marking an area as the living room, kitchen, etc. Then you could do a spot clean of just that room, and it would return to the dock. This would be nice for anyone that sees one room get noticeably messier than other rooms. Also, since I live in a split level home I have 2 floors that make up 1500 sq ft. Right now I can only have the upstairs mapped, and I have to do an unmapped spot clean for downstairs. It would be great if the D7 could store multiple floor plans for situations like this. I know the bot needs a homebase for a floorplan to work, so I would be open to buying an additional second home type dock for this feature. Right now the cost of robovacs are just too much for the average person to consider 1 for every floor. For now this is a great little robot, that is perfectly happy to take orders and clean up after my family. I don't live in fear that it will one day rise up and destroy civilization.

    The Neato Botvac D7 Connected is Neato Robotics most recent top of line robot vacuum. Let me start by saying I own a Roomba 800 series and the Neato predecessor to the D7 , the Neato Botvac Connected. Hands down, the Neato vacuums are the best in every respect and the best of the best is the D7. The Neato Botvac D7 navigates better, cleans better, the battery last longer and it cleans faster. The competition just does not stack up and I have looked at them all - Dyson is too tall, too expensive and the battery life is not good, Samsung is too tall and too expensive, Roomba does not get into the corners and takes longer to clean. All the competition does not clean as well nor have as good as an app. So let’s look at the features, functions and benefits and how they stack up against the competition : Design - The first thing you will notice is the “D” shaped wedge design vs the round design of the competition. This enables the brush to get closer to corners. Think about competition, how does a round object possibly get into a corner as well as squared off design? In reference to the brush, do a search for pictures of the brush design on the D7 and brush design of the Roomba. Actually, Neato has the pictures on their website. You will find if you flip the units over the Roomba has a long brush that nearly goes end to end where the competition has two counter rotating blades in the center of the unit and only about half as long. Basic common sense is the Roomba brush ( which is an actual brush) will do a better job. There are many other design features I could go over but I think that tends to just make the review too long. Anyone can go to Bestbuy or Neatorobotics for the full design details. I would suggest going to Neato’s website over Bestbuy’s site, Neato really did a fantastic job and there is everything you need to know. Navigation, the mobile app and cleaning - Neato laser mapping navigation system is top notch. The D7 had no problem navigating through my 800 sq. ft. apartment ( as the predecessor did nearly as well.) When you first run the D7 it has to map out the area so you can create "no go zones.” Those are zones you do not want the robot to go. The prior version used magnetic boundary markers ( this version comes with them as well but you may not need them.) The D7 had no issue navigating around tables, chairs and across carpets, tile and wood. The app is fantastic, simple to use and easy to set up the robots. I already had the app installed for my Neato Botvac Conencted and was able to get my new D7 robot up and running in a few minutes. It was a bit confusing at first because I am running two robots from the app and it appeared that I lost one of the robots. I was wrong, couple of swipes and there they were : Ultron and Jarvis. You don’t have to worry about Ultron, his shell is no longer vibranium and he has yet to shoot lasers out of his eyes. That’s funny to fans of the Avengers , not so much to everyone else. But I digress. Cleaning was fantastic. To be honest , I did not think it could get any better than the Neato Botvac Connected but the D7 does. It was far superior to Roomba 800 series, there was no contest. I am not sure why the D7 does a better job than it’s predecessor ( the design is so similar) but I think part of it has to do with the brush and maybe it has a stronger motor. The Neato D7 battery lasted over 90 minutes cleaning ( I have seen ratings for over 130 minutes for Eco mode and I run it in deep clean mode) and it methodically covered 600 sq. ft of floor space. I have read some reviews that the Neato D7 is loud when it is cleaning. While loudness is subjective, I did not find this loud at all. To test that, I ran a sound meter on my phone and recorded a db rating of 64 at about 6 feet away. That is the level of a conversation and a typical vacuum is about 70 db ( about 60% louder.) So you can see what I did like , what about what I do not like ? I did run into issues of the initial run in creating no go zones. For some reason , it had to run 2 times before it created a map to be used for no go zones. Minor but worth mentioning. Then several days into using the vacuum, it would not connect to the internet and I could not control it through the app. I am guessing there was some type of update that caused this. Regardless of the reason, the vacuum was stuck in trying to connect. I had to install it again and pair it to the internet. That was a bit more unsettling and I could not find what would have caused the issue. Once the D7 was reinstalled, there have been no issues since. One design feature I do not like is the rotating side brush. It is a small brush that rotates and it is supposed to get into corners and brush debris into the main brush head. I can honestly say that it does nothing on carpet and almost nothing on hard floors. It is held on by a magnet. To be honest, it appears to me , Neato put it on simply to compete from a marketing standpoint with Roomba. Roomba has much stronger and larger brush . But you know what? Roomba has to have that in order to get around the inferior round design and center mounted brushes. I do not even think Neato has to have this side brush, the wedge D shaped design is that good. A minor complaint is finding a replacement main brush. In comparing the brush between the D7 and Neato Botvac Connected, the D7 has a straighter brush design whereas the Botvac Connected is more of a spiral design. I could not find a specific part number for the main roller brush that came with the D7 and would like to buy back ups like I have for the Neato Botvac Connected. It looks like they are all compatible with each other but I want the exact that came with the D7. When I go to the Neato website , it lists brush as the Neato Botvac Connected Series Spiral Combo Brush but when I click on it to buy it from retailer, it takes me to the brush kit instead. It is all a bit confusing. Neato, it would be helpful if you could part numbers somewhere so people can differentiate the accessories. Conclusion - The Neato Botvac D7 Connected is simply the best robot vacuum you can buy. It is better in every category - navigation, cleaning, app, Google Home integration, IFTTT and more. There are units that are more expensive but you just cannot beat Neato’s design and engineering. Neato is standard that all others should be measured against in the robot vacuum market. I recommend it completely and give it 5 out 5 stars.

    Doesn't hold up well to long pet hair

    Runs fine right up until the 90-day mark, then had major hardware issues. I have two golden retrievers. They're awesome dogs, but they constantly shed large amounts of long dog hair. Vacuuming their dog fur every day took about 30 minutes, and if the chore was ever skipped the house's floors would look quite dirty. Hair, dirt, and other objects from outside got everywhere. So I looked for a robot vacuum to get back some time every day. I tested the Roomba 980, Neato D5, and both had issues. The Roomba with its random cleaning pattern took much longer to clean, and while it eventually cleaned all areas, it was very loud and annoying to deal with for several hours a day. I work from home remotely and take calls frequently so having the vacuum making noise constantly in the background wasn't ideal. The Neato D5 offered a better solution in my opinion with it's cleaning pattern more organized it managed to clean the house in just 45 minutes. However, the D5 had two major issues with my house. There are several areas the D5 would get stuck, and placing the magnetic strips on the floor so it would avoid the areas just wasn't possible in some places. This meant I could never run the robot without being at home or it would get stuck and not complete the process. The battery also couldn't quite make it through a full cleaning sometimes so it would go back and recharge, but have trouble finding it's base charging station. Then I saw the commercials for the upcoming Neato Botvac D7. With the no-go lines, larger battery, and improved brush I figured my problems were solved. The price is very high ($800 when I purchased), but I decided the convenience was worth it. I installed the unit and got it running. Using the no-go lines requires using the Neato app instead of voice activation by Alexa which was slightly disappointing, but the app is well built and easy to use so I didn't mind that much. After about 5 runs the robot got the hang of getting around the house, and the no-go lines kept it from getting caught in the areas the D5 model always had issues with. The battery let it clean the whole house in one go, and I noticed the different brush that ships with the D7 did a much better job of grabbing small bits of dirt and dog hair than the one shipped with the D5. Since I paid $800 for the unit I wanted to make sure I took good care of it. I purchased the more expensive "Neato" brand filters and brushes to have replacements on hand and not risk issues with 3rd party filters/brushes damaging my unit. I cleaned out the dustbin and brush after EVERY cleaning (a must do especially if the unit is dealing with dog hair). However, earlier this week I heard the unit power down in the middle of a cleaning saying it was stuck and needed its brush cleaned. That was odd to me, but I followed the instructions cleaned out the brush and dustbin. I noticed that some pet hair was accumulating in the plastic bit that spun the brush. I pulled out as much of it as I could, but the large gap between the piece turning the brush, and the plastic for what I assume is the brush motor housing provided a large area for hair to sneak in and get trapped. I really feel that's a design flaw on Neato Robotic's part as it's just asking for something to get in there and burn up the motor. Sure enough, after cleaning everything out the unit still refused to power up and do it's job and constantly gave me the "clean brush" error' Getting a hold of Neato support over email took a very long time, and despite me sending them all the troubleshooting steps I performed, after 48 hours I got a response from a support agent asking me to go through several troubleshooting steps that I had already done. They didn't even bother to look at the model of robot I told them I had and requested that information again which told me after a 48-hour wait for a response, the support agent just sent a generic template. The only step I hadn't tried was removing the brush and trying to let it run on its own. I gave that a shot and the robot still quickly powered itself down. I decided to reach out to Neato's chat support and I explained the issue to them. For an $800 device that was less than 90 days old I was hoping they'd exchange the unit for a new one, but the reply I got was they'd try to do a repair instead so I'd lose my device for several weeks. Regardless of it I got a new unit or this one repaired, I'm likely going to end up in the same situation a few months down the road since the brush motor housing design allows for hair to easily get into the motor. Since this robot only has a 12-month warranty, you'll be out of luck after a few repair attempts or exchanges when your warranty runs out and the brush motor fails. This might be a good robot vacuum if long hair isn't a common issue in your house, but if that's the case you're likely better off saving several hundred dollars and going with the D5 unit or a comparable Roomba. I really liked Neato's cleaning pattern versus Roomba's random cleaning pattern, but after a long testing period, it seems Roomba has a better design for it's robot's than Neato Robotics has for its botvacs.

      Also in relation to the repair this is actually an engineering evaluation of the robot, we do this because the robot is new, also to eliminate any user error that may have caused this issue.

      This process has an expedited lean time once we received the broken robot we have a turn around time of 48 hours before we send a replacement or the repaired unit is returned.

    Great software, cleaning power, and battery life

    Neato’s Botvac D7 connected brings together a strong blend of hardware, software, and market experience to provide a robot vacuum that’s as close to perfect as any I’ve tested over the last five years. Pros: - Excellent overall hardware design, with a low profile and wide brush up front. - Intelligent and efficient navigation. - Good cleaning ability. - Traverses boundaries between rugs and floors without getting confused or losing orientation - Best battery life I’ve yet seen in a robot vacuum. - Bullet proof WiFi connection. - Excellent mapping functions with software boundaries. - Excellent smartphone app user experience. - Easy and reliable software update process. Cons: - Lack of on-unit screen means you need to open to app to read any messages or errors. - The dirt bin could be bigger. - Suction in “eco” mode tends to move some dirt around rather than suck it up. Design: The D7 is attractively finished and combines a wide square front (with a brush than spans almost the full width) with a circular back for a very efficient shape. There’s also a small side brush that catches dirt along the edge of the floor. The low profile allows it to fit under beds and many couches without trouble. The matt black finish of the areas which come into contact with walls and furniture is a wise move that helps to avoid visible scratches. We have an original Neato from many years ago and the finish still looks good. Removing the brushes for cleaning is relatively easy and a simple wipe down of the exterior and sensors keeps things running OK. The dirt bin could be larger and the relatively small opening can sometimes get clogged if large items are sucked up or if you have a lot of carpet fluff. Not a deal breaker, but know that for large floors you may need to empty the bin after an hour or so. Performance: Vacuum performance is excellent on the default “turbo” mode, while still offering 2 hours or more of run time. “Eco” mode is quieter and reduces suction for a longer run time and a still reasonable clean, although in this mode some larger pieces of paper or waste tend to get pushed around vs. picked up. The unit had no trouble cleaning the approximately 1300 sq ft of our floor plan on a single battery charge. In doing so it easily traversed wood floors, carpets, and rugs without issue. The ability to cover the floor on a single charge is a huge benefit, since recharging during cleaning runs can triple the cleaning time for most units. Software: The mobile app and robot firmware are mature and very well executed, with a friendly interface and very quick responses. I did not encounter a single issue on my Android handset with WiFi dropouts, lost mapping data, or app crashes. There was one case where the robot failed to correctly dock at the end of cleaning and rebooted itself before trying again. The software is feature rich, providing robust scheduling and an outstanding mapping feature that creates a floorplan of your home and allows the user to set “no go” zones by drawing red lines across areas of the map. This is the best and most reliable implementation of this idea that I’ve yet seen in a robot vacuum. The lines are easy to draw and easy to edit. I tested use of these “no go” zones and it worked perfectly. It would be great to be able to define rooms by name and clean just specific parts of the house, but perhaps that can come in a software update later. Conclusion: The Neato Botvac D7 continues Neato’s record of producing smart, capable robot vacuums. It’s combination of navigation, cleaning power, great software features, and outstanding battery life make it easy to recommend.

    21st Century Cleaning

    Like with any robot vac do not expect it to be as good as a standard vacuum. It does clean up all that is in its path, unless you are controlling it yourself (which is cool), but sort of defeats the purpose, it will go only where it can.However, once it learns the environment it doesn't just go all over, it will go in rows like mowing the grass. While this one will get in more corners with its square edges than I anticipated, it is not as versatile as a standard vacuum, but again I did not expect it to replace normal cleaning, just help in the day to day. We recently removed carpet and knew going to hard flooring the pet hair, and my three ladies’ hair, would be pretty hard to keep up. The vac will cover about 1000sqft of laminate wood and luxury vinyl plank in the kitchen for my purposes and will have battery to spare. I was pleasantly surprised that the vac could make it over a the transition strip that is about a 5/8” drop off, no angle. The vac can make it back over it, but it takes it a couple of tries to get the proper angle and movements. On standard angled transitions it has no problems. PROS -long battery life/floor coverage -virtual no go zones (don’t have to worry with magnetic strips!) -Scheduled operation -mountain climbing abilities (5/8” that is) -App has battery level, time till fully charged, and creates a floor plan of where it has been, also has approximate square footage cleaned. -replacement parts are not as expensive as I would have thought given the starting cost -MANUAL MODE! (There is lag, like playing Super Mario Bros. and when you stop running you slide a bit, same concept, it keeps momentum) CONS -Turbo and Eco mode has no difference that I can tell. Says ECO mode is quieter, but I couldn’t tell. However, I will keep it in Eco mode in the event it really does better with the battery. -gets hung up on lamp cords -while it can go under furniture, at the wrong angle it can hit the power button, putting it in pause mode. The app will alert you (pros), but if it hits the button long enough it will turn it off and then it will start the cleaning process all over. My ottoman it did not like, its sits just a bit lower than the couches (which it cannot go under fully, the Neato badge on top keeps it from doing). -Manual Mode doesn’t have an auto-dock feature Overall its pretty cool. Comparing to other robot vacs on the bottom end of the price comparison, they are slimmer so can fit into more spots, but don’t have no where near the feature set. I would recommend it for sure. Not a cheap purchase, but if your tired of dust mopping twice a day, it is a great time saver. Again, it won’t replace a good cleaning, but it definitely helps keep up in between.
