    Great vacuum but....

The vacuum is a wonderful addition to our home and we are so happy to have it, bc if you have hardwood or laminate flooring then you know keeping it dust or dirt free is a serious chore, as you are able to see everything. The QUALITY is extremely sturdy and well built. It is very easy to unpack, get it on the docking station for initial setup and charge. Directions are straightforward but... We have had and still have ISSUES connecting to the app. It states that the bot is connected to the wifi but is unable to connect to the Internet. We tried for two days straight, and on three different devices that had different iOS systems running, before we decided to call support. Don't worry the bot can still run without the app. SUPPORT was very eager to help and the young fellow advised that this is a common issue that it has with some peoples Internet setup. However, he then explained that he was very new to the job and had to pull out his documentation to assist. At, this point we should have asked for someone with further experience, but we rolled with it to give him a chance. He needs the experience right?!? After, about 45 mins and us changing settings and our internet setup (so said "highest/fastest" fiber Internet that is capable of handling a load of connections), we still weren't able to connect the bot. I am going to call support again as it is now a full week without bot connectivity. Although, the app isn't necessary to use the machine, the app makes it possible to run the vacuum away from home, set schedules, have a visual map of your home, create invisible barriers, move the bot to where you want it and so much more. Without the app, I have to manually start the bot, which isn't a big deal. You only have to press one button and it's ready to go, but the point of having the "connected" model is for it to connect and use all of its features, right? On to PERFORMANCE. This little thing is mighty. It cleans so well, it's incredible. It maps the house with precision and we haven't had any issues with its performance. The large and high wheelbase makes it easy to go over any hurdles like the intersecting legs on our coffee table. It picks up sizeable pieces of dirt, food, and random pieces of whatever left behind by the kids. When it finishes mapping the room, it moves very quickly to cover the entire floor, and it hasn't missed anything on the floor. It grabs dirt in the corners very well because of its shape. We prefer this D shape over any rounded models. Also, we have it in an area where there are stairs and, boy oh boy, my heart ached when it got to that part bc I just knew it was going to tumble, crash and burn down those stairs. But it does as it states and has some type of avoidance technology built it. It's smart. It covers the edge of the stair but immediately stops at the edge. Besides the connection issue, we are happy with this vacuum because of its performance ability. If or when we are able to connect then I would be proud to give this 5 stars. If performance was lousy it would have definitely gotten less than 4 stars. Even though support wasn't able to help us as yet, they were very responsive and easy to get a hold of. No long continuous and ridiculous hold times and they are open pretty early for their time zone, so they were able to assist us East Coasters when everyone else would've been asleep.

Good Performing Robot Vac with Great Feature Set

The BotVac D7 is yet another robot vacuum cleaner. It has the familiar sleek rounded design. Like other modern robot vacuums, it is app controlled and has a myriad of sensors that let it intelligently map your home. It will automatically find and dock to it's charging station at the end of a cleaning session or when the battery is running low. Like other robot vacuums, it works best on solid floors or short carpets and will struggle if not get outright stuck on high pile carpets. So, where does the BotVac stand out? 1. You can mark areas the vacuum does not traverse via the app. This is by contrast of having to place obstacles (either your own or specifically designed for the robot) into your home (in order words, adding more clutter) to accomplish this same purpose. 2. You can manually drive the robot via the app. This comes in handy for more than just manual cleaning. 3. The shape isn't a complete circle but more like a squared off U. The vacuum brush/opening is in the squared area which allows for a wider mouth by comparison to a round vacuum of about the same shape. This means more coverage in a single sweep of the vacuum which translates to faster and more complete cleaning. Getting started with the vacuum is pretty quick. Download the app, go through pairing mode (bumper and start button) and complete setup over wifi. After an inital charge (or not depending on how much the robot has when it arrives), you're off on a mapping run. This would be a relatively slow one as the robot is figuring out your floor plan, bumping into things slightly to fully map the area. Here, since it doesn't know about "no-go" spaces yet since there's no map, you do need to place a boundary, open up doors, etc to aid with the initial run. After that, on cleaning runs, things run faster with the BotVac avoiding known obstacles though it will still respond if it bumps into something new placed in its way, like a certain reviewer's foot. One thing about the "no-go" markings - they are active with app-initiated cleanings but not ones triggered via the button on the robot itself. Aside from the setup, initial mapping, and setting "no-go" areas, the app also lets you pick a cleaning profile (Eco or Turbo), ability to start, stop, and pause cleaning, and return the robot to its dock. You also get a map of the environment, the robot's current location, cleaning time, status, etc. You can also setup a schedule for cleaning - though this is a normal feature as one of the big selling points for these is to have cleaning take place when you're away or asleep, so you don't need to worry about getting the way or having the turbo noise bother you. Cleaning performance is pretty good. My only gripe is on the higher fluff carpets. The robot gets bogged down in that. To be fair, I've yet to have a robot vacuum handle it well and even my stick has a hard time pushing through. It would be cool if this could act as wet/dry. The kitchen is a challenging area as debris sometimes requires a bit more effort to pick up than just a vacuum and motorized brush, but I'm otherwise pleased with the performance. In summary, this is a pretty decent vacuum. It does a good job, with lots of bells and whistles that helps it stand out from the competition.

    Great for maintenance cleanings

Setup: Initial setup was a breeze. I downloaded the app on my Android phone and followed the instructions to the letter. Within a few minutes the vacuum was connected to wifi. The vacuum itself arrived nearly fully charged which was great. I didn’t have to wait to try its maiden voyage. I pressed start on the app and it began to move. First vacuuming: It spent quite some time “sniffing” around my rooms. I was careful to make sure the floor was uncluttered as it poked around the rooms. It is remarkably low profile and fit underneath my couch without a problem. I loved the way it truned it’s flat side to the wall as it continued to map out the floor. Occasionally it would go back to where it had already covered. Not sure why. My floors were relatively clean already, but it did manage to pick-up the smallest debris without a problem. My dog and cat were bewildered as it made its way from the diningroom (where I had it docked) into the living room, kitchen, den and foyer. As instructed, I closed all doors that I did not want it to enter; in our case the bathroom. After a while, it had finished poking around, and found its way back to its docking base. I thought its re-docking was a bit clumsy, but it worked. The really surprising part was the amount of stuff I found in its dustbin. We had just had the cleaning lady there 3 days before and the dustbin was filled with pet hair! I checked the app on my phone and found it had created a pretty good representation of my floor plan. The only grip I have is I can’t use this on another floor of the house and create another map. Summary: I was really impressed with the power of this vacuum. It went from hardwood floor to carpet without issue. Every now and then it does get confused by something that it already knew was there, like our living room coffee table. I suspect that once it was mapped out, if was it moved an inch or two, the vacuum wasn’t sure how to handle it and kept trying to clean around it I would recommend this for in between regular cleanings only because it will not move dining room chairs and other items aside to clean underneath, obviously, but it is great for around the baseboards and collecting the dust/hair balls that form under the couch. One final note: We have a 3 year old that thinks the vacuum is a toy. I found her putting things on top of it as it did its work and once tried to sit on it. I recommend running this after the kids are out of the house!

Excellent replacement for a Roomba 980

I would actually rate the bot 4.5 if Best Buy allowed 1/2 stars. I've had a Roomba 980 for about 7 months. It had to be replaced twice for hardware issues. II'll save the details of my Roomba 980 wows another review. Anyway, this little guy is not the sexiest bot in the world, but it's a lot sturdier than the Roomba. Here are my top 5 pros/cons: PROS: 1. Botvac D7 is well built. Not prone to scratches and nics like other vacs. 2. Since it has a brush roller like a traditional vacuum it picks up more dirt and debris from rugs. 3. WIth the laser sight navigation it bumps into things a lot less. 4. Beccause it moves slower when it does bump into things the impact is not quite as harsh. 5. The bot is smart enough to turn off the brush and vacuum if it is trying to get out of an area it has already cleaned or if it is returning back to the base for recharge. Bonus: WIth the brush being in the front versus the middle of the bot it doesn't have to scrape against my baseboards to edge cleaning. SO no more black marks along my baseboards! CONS 1. It is a bit louder than I hoped for, but not unbearable. It is quieter than Roomba 980 2. You have to get a first cleaning run to map the house before you can setup no-go lines in the app. That can be a challenge, so you may have to put down the mag strips or move things out of the way. 3. The D shape is great for corners, but it is little more prone to getting stuck in tight places. 4. The navigation is not quite as intelligent as a Roomba 980. 5. I'm sure this is a con since ALL of the robot vacs I've had suffer from this issue, but it will tackle furniture with very dark or black base. BONUS: Did I mention this not the best looking bot? Thank god it's smart and a hrd worker.

This is one of those things that I have looked forward to for my entire life. Sure, they told me that there would be jet packs, but something that vacuums the floor for me? Now that would be fantastic! Out of the box, it was super easy to set up and get it ready to go. Downloading the app, was equally simple. After letting it charge, we set it to clean, and away it went. Our house is small, but with some thick carpets and oddly shaped furniture. The Botvac started well enough in our relatively simple bedroom, but went in and out of the room sort of randomly, and cleaned mainly in patches. Some areas seemed to get cleaned 3 or 4 times, others, not at all. We figured that it was learning the layout and we hope that it will do better in the future, and it has, but it clearly still has a lot to learn. One big problem has been our irregular chairs. They have angular legs that fool the Botvac and it often gets stuck under the table. Our elevated shelving unit has also confused it, with it finding access under the shelves in areas where there isn't a carpet, but getting stuck where there is a carpet. Emptying the canister and changing the filter were both obvious and easy to do. Setting up the Do-Not-Go areas were harder (for me). By far, my favorite thing was using the Neato App to start it cleaning while I was at work, a few cities away. Knowing that the floors were getting cleaned while I was at work, made all of the frustration go away. Is this a 5 star item? Not for me. Is it super cool and I'm glad I got it? Oh yes. If you have a very simple house to navigate, I wouldn't hesitate to get one. If your house is more complicated, the problems will be more complicated, too, but if you enjoy hearing the sound of a vaccuum that you are not pushing, the Botvac sure will make your day. I would recommend this to a friend with the reservations noted above.

    First experience with a robovac...

This is my first experience with a robovac and didn't know what to really expect from it... I like the idea and concept but how will it execute versus my expectation... From my research... this is definitely a higher price point versus many other robovacs out there, maybe it's the app connected experience and controls? I do, however, like the ability to control it from the app. While setup is a breeze with the app, being able to see the results are very satisfying. I had the robovac run a few times to learn my house layout, while there were many times it got stuck on the standing fan, once it completed a house scan, I blocked the area where the fan is out and the is problem solved. I'm not sure how often cleaning is recommended, but I have a 2 times a week schedule and clean the brush, empty the canister out weekly. I am impressed at how much it actually picks up. I don't know whether to be happy it picked up so much or disappointed that it did. LOL. Overall, I'm not sure if this is for the average joe looking for a robovac since the price point is pretty high compared to others, but I do like the ability to control more of the bot than just letting it do it's thang with no control. Maybe this is for you too. Maybe not. But I don't regret getting this. Thanks.

Cleans the floors well. Note to Neato:

Hi, I just bought my first robot vacuum yesterday - the botvac d7. I bought it because of the virtual no-go lines and the integration with Smarthings (Neato Connect V1.2.3 - Botvac Connected Series). I'm really impressed with its mapping and navigation capabilities and quality of vacuuming, but have three things I'd like to ask. 1) Is it in the works to be able to store two or more floor maps? In addition to the main floor map, I'd like to be able to bring it upstairs and have it clean that floor too, recognizing that floor and respecting a new set of no-go lines, and NOT erasing my existing main floor map. 2) If it has a map of my house and knows how to comprehend no-go lines, is it in the plans to be able to designate room labels on the map? With that, for example, I could say 'hey alexa, tell neato to clean the kitchen' and it knows where the kitchen is and cleans just that room and heads back to base. 3) Speaking of knowing where things are, it would also be extremely useful to be able to designate a spot to clean using the map in the app, and NOT having to pick up the vacuum and set it in a place for it to clean. If I have to go get the vacuum to clean a 7x7 area, I may as well get the manual vacuum and do it myself. It seems like it should be possible for the vacuum to know how to get to the area, clean it and then return to the base. Great product overall, but not quite 5 stars yet. If the above haven't been considered before, I'd ask if you submit it for feedback. The Smartthings integration is awesome, too. I set it up with a rule to clean the house every two days, but only when we're away, and not during vacation mode, and not at night. Slick!

This Neato model is mostly great. However, there a few issues that need to be addressed in future models. It chokes on Legos. In fact it chokes on socks. It chokes on cords. This little vacuum will clean your whole house flawlessly if you actually keep stuff off the floor. If you're like us and have little kids who manage to hide Legos in nooks and crannies, you will have to extricate them from the brush. On the plus side, cleaning the brush is extremely easy but not obvious. Once you know, it's a breeze beating our Roomba. One area where it also bests Roomba? It's not afraid of your dark carpet. It won't avoid black carpet thinking it's about to fall into the abyss. The house mapping really is Neato even if it's of dubious practical value unless you're setting up barriers which we haven't tried to use. The dust bin is adequate and easy to empty. When the vacuum gets stuck or encountered a problem, the phone app sends a notification. The only mildly annoying issue we've had is we had to resync the vacuum a few times. I suspect that we need to make the vacuum IP address permanent, and I suspect that this will be beyond many people who try to use it. I definitely recommend this vacuum. It cleans well, especially if you take the effort to remove obstacles from its way. It's just not able to clear the things it runs over automatically, and that keeps it from greatness.

I really like this and was excited to try it out. I put it in my finished basement, it hast been vacuumed in awhile, and is where the majority of my kids toys are located... I had them pick up the room, and i let the Neato get to work... it did a very good job on its first pass navigating the room... it got stuck once on a pile of my papers beneath my desk where I work from home, but once I removed those it went fine. It picked up a ton of dust and debris, and the map of my basement it created is very detailed and precise... a couple of things i would like to see it improve... I have tried multiple times to setup the "no-go" lines... within the app it says it has to go through a special cleaning to map out the area in order add those "no go" lines in the app... well I've done that about 5 times already and every time i go back into the app to set up the no go lines it says i have to run that special cleaning... but I've done it several times... oh well.... I'm sure a software update will fix it.... the only other thing i would like Neato to add is the ability to add multiple floor plans with multiple "no go" lines.... for instance... i would like to have this sweep my upstairs, and although the manual says i can just pick it up and start it upstairs, i wish the app had the ability to map both floors, so i could add the no go lines to each floor. Other than that, great product.

I’ve had a neato botvac connected for several years and it runs every day. but it is worn and needs new components so I just bought the new D7 to replace it instead. while not perfect, my old neato did a good job but did have issues keeping connectivity to wifi so i mostly just used the buttons on the unit itself. for the new D7, i’m currently mapping the zones and so far has worked great. I had an issue initially trying to get the D7 to connect at set up but i called Neato and they had me turn off cellular data on my phone and it connected instantly with no further problems. I upgraded to this unit so that I could connect to 5g wifi as well, instead of just the 2g signal that most electronics are restricted to. I like that Neato included 2 additional filters with this unit. So far I highly recommend.

Not sure if I'm a mediocre gift-giver or what, but this appears to be one of the best gifts my wife has ever received. We have darker-colored hard wood floors throughout our downstairs that can show dirt easily and requires a lot of effort to keep clean...this Botvac eliminates the regular chore of sweeping/vacuuming the floors and does the job relatively quickly and with less noise than I was expecting. It also navigates the house and obstacles well. The only few complaints that come to mind are: a) it does have to return to the docking station to charge itself once before it fully finishes the job (better battery life would've been nice), b) the dirt bin could be bigger c) the first unit was defective, but the return process was painless and efficient...the replacement unit works fine thus far.

I am kicking myself for not buying a robot vacuum sooner. This unit does an excellent job of cleaning my 1,600 sqft home on all surfaces (carpet, area rugs, and hardwood floors). My only gripes are with the app you use to control the unit. There needs to be an easy way to do spot cleanings right from the app. Right now you need to pick up the unit and place it where you'd like it to do a spot cleaning. I'd love to just pull up the floor plan on the app and touch right where I need my D7 to do a touch up. Still, this thing does a wonderful job keeping my place tidy all week long.

While I enjoy it and am pleased to have it, I was pleasantly surprised to receive two spare air filters but just a couple things that would have made this perfect would be coming with a spare brush roll and more accurate navigation abilities but I'm sure this will improve with time. It was admittedly disappointing not receiving any boundary markers as I thought older models came with some to start you off, but the no go lines are helping after some fine tuning. At the end of the day I'm sure this little guy will last quite a while with proper maintenance.

I've had several Roomba pet series vacuums, and they always got pet hair tangled in the gears. This Neato got great reviews for pet hair and it hasn't disappointed! It hasn't gotten tangled gears once, and it does a very good job picking hair up. I like the mixed shape of square and round edges - it gets into corners better. It can also maneuver itself out of tight spots much better than Roomba since it can lift itself up to spin around. I'm very happy with this vacuum so far!

The D7 does our entire first floor (wood, carpet, and tile) every Monday and Friday while we’re at work. When I come home, looks like a maid had been to the house. Has great suction and even though the floors look relatively clean before it goes to work, the bin is always full. The virtual borders you can draw on the map in your app work perfectly. Just got a D7 to replace my old D85 that was wearing out and getting lost too often. The D7 is "smarter" and get the job done quicker and more effectively. The ability to set up a limited area for cleaning is a real plus.
