Great price, great product... Had one small glitch

I think the iterations of the original Nest thermostat say "LOOK AT ME!, I'm cool" (and it is) It has a very distinctive look. I'm more of a minimalist person and like things that don't draw a lot of attention to themselves. The frosted bezel lens, ring and face plate work perfectly for me. I don't feel the plastic ring does look cheap. It looks subtle. I would have liked to have done away with the mounting plate, however to due to the way the previous thermostat was mounted and the control wires were run through the wall, it was a necessity. It also reduces smudges on the wall from adjusting things at the thermostat, if not using the app. Check to make sure the E provides the connectivity and functions you need. Connectivity was not an issue for our system and the fact it didn't show the outside weather was not a deterrent in our case. (Outside temp IS shown on the app.) I like the frosted face that becomes active when you approach the thermostat. It automatically adjusts its brightness depending on the amount of ambient light. The one glitch we experienced was I couldn't figure out why the thermostat wasn't adjusting the temps per the schedule set up. My location was inputed properly. I chatted with the amazing folks at Nest and the next morning the times were right. I believe the issue was their data base had us in Central time (which we are about a 10 minute drive from) and Eastern. Now everything works like a charm. The old thermostat had contacts that clicked every time it started the system, the Nest E is completely silent. May not seem like a big point, but for a very light sleeper, it makes a difference. It linked up nicely with our other Nest products (Nest Protect) and I like the fact that should smoke or carbon monoxide be detected, the E will proactively control the HVAC system so the situation is not exacerbated. Smart. Couldn't be more pleased with the Nest E. The app is intuitive and easy to set up schedules, or let it figure out the optimum schedule for you.

I've bought three of these (also one 3rd gen metal thermostat) with the free google mini chalk devices. It was an easy setup, just use the provided stickers to label each of your wires. You should shut the power to your unit so you don't touch the small thermostat wires together during removal of your old stat and when installing the Nest stat, because you can short out your HVAC control board. I didn't shut off the power since I do this for a living and was careful with the wires. You can use the plastic rectangle base plate or just leave the circle thermostat by itself on the wall. Setup was easy, just follow the step-step guidelines on the thermostat when you power it up. After a few days I was able to see my power consumption and temp changes on the history trends through the phone app/web app. It can control heat pumps and you can choose when to let the Nest stat use the emergency electrical heating strips also, it's pretty configurable. It has a motion sensor that will sense when someone is close by (it picked me up in an open area at around 20ft just like my newer model 3rd gen metal thermostat for $249) and then the display lights up. I use my phone app mostly which is awesome especially if you are in bed or if you are at work and you forgot to lower/raise the stat before you left home or your wife texts you to change the temp downstairs because she is too lazy to go downstairs (she doesn't have the Nest app on her phone yet.) The stat learns your behavior pretty good, I don't use the economy away mode setting since I have several family members that are home when I'm also at work. The away mode eventually knows when you leave for work and automatically puts your stat in economy mode and then 15 minutes before you come home from work it will bring up the stat to the temp you like). The stat has a humidity sensor also to give you the humidity. It doesn't display the weather information for your area like the newer model third genertaion metal looking Thermostat (I have one of these also, both the 3rd gen and E stat have the same hardware and software, just the 3rd gen shows weather info and looks nicer, but I don't think the extra $80 for the 3rd gen is worth it unless you want to splurge). CONS: It didn't come with any sheetwall anchors for the provided screws. I would recommend getting them, the holes are not like the older thermostat hole patterns, I've had to make new holes for all three of my stats, it wasn't a major problem. It does come with a built in bubble leveler to straighten the stat, which I didn't think it really needed, the screw holes are elongated so you can tweak it after you screw it onto the wall (there are two screws for the base plate and another two screws for the thermostat or you if don't use the base plate it's just the two screws.

I opted for the E version of the thermostat since it was less expensive than the full version, but I do not believe I am missing anything important. The E does not detect motion to know if anyone is home, though thermostats are not always located in areas that could detect motion sufficiently to be useful. (mine is in the hallway, and would never see me during the day) The plastic body does not feel any cheaper than my old thermostat, so having a plastic version is also not a huge loss. Overall, the body feels solid, and the menu system is easy to use. The smoky numbers used for the E that only display when I am in the vicinity of the thermostat is better looking to me than bright numbers. The numbers are visible from several feet away, so I just need to move in front of it to see the temperature setting. The Nest app is easy to use, and the ability to schedule temperatures for the system that change throughout the day is great. I have my home warm up in the morning to wake me up, and cool down at night to facilitate sleep. Each day can be individually scheduled, and the schedule can be set-up/modified on the phone or though a computer. The home-away is nice, though not always reliable since it requires the phone and the app to communicate properly. There have been many days when it did not register me leaving, and it takes time for it to figure out I am home. I found using Google Home routines for work days to change the system to Eco while I am at work more useful than the home-away assist. Being able to check to see if my kids have adjusted the thermostat when I am away from home is also nice, as is adjusting the thermostat through my phone or Google Home without having to get up. Finally, setup is relatively easy if you know some basic wiring. As recommended, take a picture of the old thermostat wiring before pulling wires off. Also, add the labels to the wires as they are being removed. The second one is always easier to install than the first one. And, the face place provided with the Nest will help hide the missing paint behind the old thermostat since the sizes will be different.

    Awful and frustrating

I regret purchasing this half-baked and overpriced product. Originally, I purchased two units for two separate dqellingas. Not only was the onscreen setup buggy and difficult, it took over an hour for the unit to finally connect to the wifi connection, which is broadcast nearby from a new router at high speed. It required multiple resets to finally grab an internet connection. The instructions for the various wiring were difficult and unclear, especially for older systems or wiring jobs that were not performed professionally. Customer service was contacted by chat only after an extremely long wait, and no issue was resolved due to their lack of knowledge and stonewalling of customers. They couldn't answer simple questions about wiring types and required multiple pictures of the setup, all of which failed to upload thanks to their subpar services. I gave up on this Nest and boxed it back up. The other unit appears to work, but the single most frequently utilized feature is the eco mode, which...fails to activate when the application senses that I'm away from home. The cherry on top? Eco mode, which I activate daily and more than any of the Nests other features, cannot be enabled or disabled by voice such as with an Alexa or Google Home which I was truly looking forward to. This completely defeats the purpose of convenience and automation. After this misery and frustration at basic failures, ranging from reliability, to functionality, to customer service, I promptly returned both units for a refund. Avoid this product at all costs.

We moved into a new home and my wife wanted to place a large China hutch in front of the thermostat. So, we started looking at smart thermostats. Our needs were pretty simple: we needed to be able to adjust the thermostat from our phones. We researched options, and we were familiar with Nest, but had not had any experience with it. I'm in tech, so I was aware of Ecobee and others, as well. In the end, we settled on Nest because it was reasonably priced and offered the options we wanted. We also use Amazon's Echo, and it integrates with it. I like the geo-fencing feature that lowers the temperature when we are away. The app is user-friendly. I would recommend spending a little more to get the regular Nest though. The E is fine for us since it is hidden, but the display is a lot nicer on the regular Nest. Both function the same, but if I had to look at it regularly, I'd prefer the normal Nest. Also, the regular Nest is compatible with more HVAC systems. So, check your system and the Nest site, which will inform you if your system is compatible with the Nest E before purchasing. Install is simple. I was able to do this myself using the included instructions and a YouTube video.

After purchasing this product and experiencing what I have with it I would suggest to anyone out there not to buy it. This product did not live up to expectation as it was wired by a professional for my 3 year old furnace and less than 1 year old AC system and to say ti preformed poorly is an understatement especially when the Midwest experienced the chill of the last week of January 2019. Unlike the standard thermostat which runs on double AA or AAA this relies on power from wiring and would still find a way to not keep charged with 24 volts. I called Nest whom basically told me that they would not replace these units which in other words means this product is garbage and we do not want to give out 2 more pieces of garbage without getting paid. My recommendation is go with a decent digital standard thermostat but if you are like me and would really like to have something you can control remotely to take a chance with another thermostat.

My wife and I purchased this as a small upgrade for our first home, thinking it would look nice fornresale more than anything. We are impressed with how easy it was to set up, and how much we use the various features. Our favorite is that the thermostat learns, and created a schedule on it's own based on our usage. It only took a few days for the initial schedule to start, and it slowly adjusts. This means that the temperature tends to adjust automatically for bed and sleep, without ever setting it up - though you can set one up. The app is super easy to use, and extremely convenient. I've adjusted the temperature from a couch, or from my dinner table with guests, or bumped up the temperature because I was going to be out anyway after work. Pairing with a Google home, which mine came with for free, means I can also just set a temperature by speaking. These features are convenient, but also saving us money. I've already noticed a difference in my power bill in the OK summer.

I can't speak on the money saved by owning this product, because I haven't had it for long enough to actually see a difference on my bill. However, this device is beyond convenient, I purchased it because my old thermostat broke and I figured why not get the latest and greatest. This device lets me control my temperature from anywhere I want, and I can ask my google assistant to set the temperature for me. It looks great on my wall (the old one was an eye sore) and this device doesn't take batteries like my old one, instead it uses a built in battery that auto-recharges when needed. My only complaint is that every since I installed it, I noticed my house feels slightly colder that usual (it tends to favor colder temperatures, probably one way of saving you money) Also, When I purchased this, I thought that I needed to dish out even more money to have it professionally installed (like most other thermostats) But the installation is very simple, you just screw in 2 screws and plug in 4 or 5 wires, and it works... Just be sure to check if your system is compatible with the nest before you spend your money on it.

I have had my nest e thermostat now for over a month and I love it. I have a w story home with 2 ac units. My family is downstairs during the day and upstairs at night. It did not take long for the thermostat to learn my habits and adjust the temp with out much effort from me. It works great with Alexa and google. Which is what I use to control the thermostat 90 % of the time. I love not having to run all over my house to change the temp. It talks to my xfinity security system. When I set the security for away it lowers the ac. I was considering the the regular nest but I'm the end I made the right choice. It blends in with the trim, and it does essentially the same thing as the more expensive nest. My only complaint is that the mounting bracket isnt included. The instructions say most homes do not need it. However mine did and the only way to get it is from nest themselves for 15 bucks. I went to the store and got a universal mounting bracket and that did the job.

Before buying the Nest E thermostat, I had a programmable thermostat and wasn't sure how the Nest E was going to be better at saving energy. I was skeptical to buy it until there was a sale that it was too good to pass. I also bought 3 temperature sensors since my house has rooms with different temperatures. After owning it for over a month, I understand why so many people love this thermostat. It was easy to install, and to control using the app. Besides, with the temperature sensors I can set the desired temperature based on the room that I'm at, which can be a big energy saver for me, since I work at home. When I'm working the thermostat sensor in the office is controlling the temperature, and my home office is the coolest in the house, so I save a lot of energy during the day. It's also great that I can control the Nest E from anywhere, and that it's able to self-learn my temperature preferences. Buying the Nest E was definitely a great investment.

I have a two zone, forced air heating/cooling HVAC system. The standard Nest thermostat is installed downstairs in zone 1 and the Nest Thermostat E is installed upstairs for zone 2. I had no issues with wiring or furnace controller compatibility as our builder left all of the wiring in the wall for the thermostats so I was able to make use of the common wire. Also, I opted to update my furnace controller for proper zone control with smart thermostats. The Nest E is an excellent thermostat which has all of the features I need. If I hadn’t already purchased the standard Nest Thermostat for downstairs, I would have bought 2 Nest E thermostats as the standard one has a lot of features I don’t need. Additionally, I am running the Nest temp sensor with the Nest E upstairs to help keep the temperature someone even across all of the rooms. Everything has been working perfectly for me.

Save your time and money by checking your system first. I wasted mine and want others to benefit from this experience. I should have trusted my instincts. I already knew the wires were incompatible but I wanted to use the Nest thermostat so I called Nest customer service who then told me that a Nest Pro installer can rewire my system to make the thermostat work. Apparently the Nest Pro installer couldn't rewire my system because I have a communicating furnace that actually uses different wires to communicate with the entire system. So long story short, if you have DX+ and DX- wires, don't bother buying a Nest thermostat or having a Nest Pro installer come by because Nest will not work with your system.

When we first moved into our new home, we immediately replaced the main floor thermostat with a Nest Learning Thermostat. Our home had two thermostats but we were debating on just leaving the upstairs thermostat to avoid the added expense of buying another Nest Thermostat. Black Friday rolled around and they had a great deal on the Nest E., Of course, it is not as nice as the Learning Thermostat, but in the end, it has the same functions and not the looks. Since it was going upstairs where there wouldn't be too much traffic from visitors, we decided to go with the E. It has been a great choice and love its functionality. If you have the money for the Learning Thermostat and care about the looks, do it. But if you are just looking for the functionality of a Smart Thermostat, the E will get the job done.

I had some issues during the install with getting the unit to work. the ac never worked the fan would only blow. customer service was great. they helped me test until it started working. which was about an hour and a half. when I say started working I mean on its own when it felt like it it started. that made me a little weary off the bat. I had everything wired correctly from the beginning but after moving wires around during troubleshooting they ended up back where I originally had them it started working. from there it for the most part work. it kind of had a mind of it's own. it would set itself on random temperatures and a few times went to eco mode even when I disabled it. came home tonight and again the ac quit and couldn't get it back up. put the old thermostat back in. I'll return it for a new one then try again. hopefully with better luck. give it one more shot. when it works it's great.

Very easy to install, READ THE DIRECTIONS!! It is very easy to install and use the Nest Thermostat with the app. I actually thought I didn’t want one that much but my techy son got one and he went on and on about it blah blah. HE WAS RIGHT ( as usual ) don’t tell him please. This Nest is awesome. We love it, my wife and I. She used to get her phone light to see what the old thermostat read lol. Now just walk within a few feet and it glows softly the room temp. I love the energy reports on my phone. I also got an instant $100 rebate from our electric utility company. I would give 10 stars if I could.

This not worth the money for 2 reasons. 1. I expected it to work with Alexa but it doesn't. Hidden in their support documents is a statement that not all locations work with alexa. Not sure what Location has to do with it, but definitely deceptive on Nest part. They advertise it works with Alexa. 2. If you are retired or not on a schedule the smart learning is a pain. It turns on when you don't want and off when you want it on. Definitely spend more time adjusting the thermostat than I did the old one. Also it is suppose to go to 60 when I leave and today I came home to the house at 70 even though the thermostat was set at 68 when I left. I spoke to a rep at the company and he basically said that there was nothing he could do and maybe a future update will fix it. Extremely disappointed with this company and this product. I did extensive research before purchasing this, but didn't think there was a need to read thehelp manual.

I’ve only had this for a couple of weeks. But so far I like it. It was super easy to install and it can be installed without the backplate if you’re will to clean up the holes for your old thermostat. And it looks way better without the backplate. I’ve got mine connected to Alexa which if very convenient if you need to change the temp at night in bed. Just tell her what to set it to and done. No need to get uncomfortable. I haven’t tried the schedule learning yet because I don’t really have a set stfor when I’m not home. I just use the custom schedule and it works great for me. I haven’t received my first electric bill since installing so I don’t know if it’s saved me money yet or not. But being in Florida in the middle of summer, the ac is always on cause of the heat. So I’m not really sure if I’d notice anyways. All in all, I really like it. Looks good and works great.

Replaced my thermostat that I had set up for home & away times based on my work schedule. But I often work unscheduled overtime during the week & on my scheduled days off. So, much of the time my house was being comfortably heated while I was not even home, what a waste of money & resources. This Nest has already saved me money by not heating my house if I am not home and by me being able to put it in eco mode no matter where I am when I am not home. Plus with the addition of a remote temp sensor in my master bedroom, my whole house is much more comfortable & I was able to turn down the heat by 2 degrees. Super easy install, 10 minutes. Another 10 minutes to set it up with the app. Just get one, its a no brainer!

This is one of the best purchases I’ve made for my house. I tried a “smart” thermostat from another company for a few months before I switched and I have to say it did not come close to the level of simplicity and convenience of the Nest E. Go for the E over the Learning Thermostat. It has the same smarts, is way more affordable, and looks better in my opinion. In minutes, I had it set up, connected to the app, and controllable from my smart speaker. Keep an eye open for local rebates as the Nest E can almost entirely pay for itself before you even open the box (I found a $75 rebate plus another $50 rewards for signing up for my electric company’s energy saving program on top of the Black Friday sales pricing). The additional money I save from the learning software is just the icing on top.

My Nest arrived with simple, concise instructions about how to install and set it up. I didn’t know if I could actually install a thermostat, but Nest made it so simple. You don’t even have to screw the wires into the ports, you just push a button and in it goes! Once connected, it took over and walked itself through set up. It asked me to choose language, location, etc. Once set up was finished, it checked the heat itself. When it was done I established settings like what temperatures I want during the night, day, when I’m home, or away. And that’s it! It’s super easy to set up. And I can control everything from my phone no matter where I am, or from the device on the wall. I love that I can warm up the house when I’m on my way home, even when I’m not coming and going on a regular schedule. I love my Nest, and have already recommended it to so many people.
