It was a pain in the butt to set up. Had to have Geek Squad come out and help me. Once everything was set up it's worked GREAT!

    Poor management interface design. Underwhelming.

The management interface for this device is appalling. It is constantly bugging you to download and install the Nighthawk app for your phone. This device will un-apologetically redirect you from the web interface to Netgear's site so that every time you try to access the router management page (192.168.1.1). This page is cached in your browser, which pretty much prevents you from accessing the router unless you either download the app or clear your entire browser cache. On said site, Netgear gives you incomplete directions for clearing the ENTIRE browser cache in Internet Explorer and Chrome. For Edge and Firefox, the directions basically say "look it up yourself." No, this is NOT some necessary evil of a function that has the consumer's best interest in mind. I paid $130.00 for this router (marked down from $150.00) and am really disappointed by the lack of granularity in the QoS settings. I know this isn't a high end router, but it is middle of the road at its price point as routers do exist for much less than $100. The QoS settings here are practically just "on" or "off." I can't specify devices, let alone applications or traffic type. Huge disappointment. Speeds are equally unimpressive. The 2.4Ghz band achieves around 100mbps with OFDMA enabled on the latest version of the firmware -- this is with a single client connected to the wireless interface. My internet connection is 200mbps, making the wireless connection a serious bottleneck. I have to switch to the 5Ghz band in order to max out the bandwidth provided by my ISP. Yes, this is an improvement over whatever wireless access point provided by your ISP. It also offers a VPN connection. However if you want more control over your network or have a lot of devices to manage, buy something else and pay more money. Keep in mind that as of this writing, custom firmware (DD-WRT, Tomato) is not available for this router due to the lack of support for its chipset. I regret buying this product, especially since the price on it tanked one week after my return period expired. My next router will definitely be an Asus. I gave this router 2 stars because it works. If you don't need VPN access, buy a cheaper offering from a different brand. If you are looking for the fastest, most stable connection for gaming, cheap out on your wireless access point all you want and plug your computer or console in via Cat6 ethernet. Wired interfaces take priority over wireless connections by default on most home wireless routers, and even the fastest wireless connections are not suitable for gaming as you would expect.

Internet connection very unstable. Would constantly cycle on and off. This was not a modem issue as it was hooked to a new modem with new cables and devices hooked straight to modem over LAN never dropped connection. Followed troubleshooting guides through tech support which did not help. Setup was cumbersome to say the least. Something that should have taken a few minutes took over an hour of cycling this device and modem with resetting to factory defaults several times. Nighthawk app was almost useless and finally was able to get to setup on laptop after doing search on web to figure a work around. After two days worth of trying to stay connected, took this back to the store and swapped to google nest which was a breeze to install, connected right away with blistering fast connection. Was downloading 48 mbps max with Netgear. Just hit over 115 consistently with google nest. Don’t waste your time and sanity with this router.

I put this in just at the start of 2020. It works alright but has issues with legacy wireless B/G devices dropping off and not reconnecting unless its rebooted. Coverage in my house is a bit hit or miss. House is relatively small (950 on the 1st floor) and it has issues with the Plaster Wiremesh walls. I will be pulling this out and going different rout here shortly

The AX1800 is easy to install and does most of the work for you, unlike previous models. Plenty of bandwidth. Comes with an app that does the installation. Much better than the one we got only 2 years ago.

I needed this because of all my smart devices that have increased in my household. I haven't had any problems with it so far. The only con is that if my power goes out, you have to push the button physically to turn it back on. I never had to do that with the other ones I've had but besides that it's worth the buy.

Bought this to replace a competitor's high-end router which lasted me for several years, figured I'd give Netgear a try again. The one thing I couldn't get past was the UI. It needs work. For example you can't make single changes to tables without a full restart, which seems to take forever. I also had issues when using the ability to have one SSID for both the 2.4 and 5ghz band wireless (Smart Connect). Many of my 5ghz devices would only connect to the 2.4ghz band. Older 2.4ghz devices also had issues connecting at all with this feature turned on. Also, I don't care for the fact you have to create at Netgear account to get the router setup. Then about a week later, their 'Armor' product, tied to Bitdefender, gets auto setup on the router and you get email after email about purchasing the product while you're on a trial you didn't ask for. Also no idea why excessively bright LEDs have to be used in a device such as this. Yes you can turn them off, which is what I had to do, but it's nice to be able to see if your connection is down without having to connect to the router.
