Customers are saying

Customers find value in the Nighthawk 32 x 8 DOCSIS 3.1 Voice Cable Modem's ease of use, strong performance, and straightforward setup. Many appreciate its voice support and competitive price, particularly as an alternative to cable company rentals. However, some users experienced compatibility issues with certain internet providers and reported problems with the Ethernet ports. The lack of built-in Wi-Fi was also a recurring point of feedback.

This unit is good but was not the unit I needed at the time. I have nothing bad to say about the product. Simply realized I needed something a bit more when I changed cable providers.

Best choice for gig speed modem w/ voice

If you have gig speed internet from Comcast or plan to get it and you need voice, this is the one to get. With latest docsis 3.1, you shouldn't need to upgrade any time soon. This will save you money over renting from comcast over its life.

I was unsure at first but I’m glad that I invested in this product. It has saved me money on my cable bill. Downside is that the cable company gives you such a hard time activating it.

Spiffy little modem for the price, great speed and decent voice handling, the ability to bond ports 1 and 2 is also an amazing feature if you get a router capable of using it.

Speeds not over 300MB with a 1GB plan

Only one Ethernet port will work at one time. So the 4 ports are useless. I couldn’t get the speed that I was getting from my xfinity modem/router combo after I installed this. Comcast did many tests over the phone and had a technician come out and he couldn’t speed test since this was a Netgear product. The incoming COAX had 1GB speed but once I connected to a 1GB router (Netgear R6700) I couldn’t get speeds faster than 300MB hardwired or WiFi. Netgear will say all 32 channels will need to be connected for downstream but comcast only uses 31 channels, so Netgear is wrong about this. I was on hold over an hour with Netgear to get some help. Netgear has no ability to test the modem or router other than have you turn off and turn on, reset the modem and router, go into router settings and read off the numbers. There is nothing in the settings we have the ability to change. The Netgear help desk told me that this is a black box with plug and play and there is not much they can do get faster speeds. Since my comcast modem/router in the basement, I thought I could separate it and put the router upstairs but with only 1 Ethernet plug it became difficult to do so. I got tired of Comcast blaming the speed issues on Netgear and Netgear blaming it on Comcast. Many hours spent on the phone and complaints from the family for internet downtime. Returned it and sticking it out with Comcast since I get better speeds with their modem/router combo. I feel that this is done on purpose to deter us from buying our own modem.

Install is fairly straightforward, phone plugs into port in back and back of phone. Only had a month or so but dependable, less drop off than other modems.

Bought this to replace the basic modem/router that Xfinity gives out. It works far better. Unfortunately, it does have some issue with signal to rooms lined with copper plumbing, but it still does better than the Xfinity stuff.

Check out the products allowed by your cable or satellite provider before you purchase the unit. I found out that my provider doesn't allow any outside equipment on their system.

Unit will have paid for itself after about 16 months by not renting xFinity modem. Additional router was required, to add wireless functionality. I will have room for 7 wired connections, if need be.

Not many options right now for a DOCSIS 3.1 voice modem that works with Xfinity. This one is good, but a bit pricey. Still beats paying monthly to Comcast though.

WORKS WELL - AND THEN NOT

Worked well until it didn't. 13 months after receipt this product started generated a large (very large, hundreds of thousands) of uncorrectable downstream errors. After lots of discussion with Comcast and testing they said - replace it with the Comcast rental product. I did, and it miraculously cured all the issues. So - be cautious. And to make it worse, 1 month after warranty expiration, so - $$ down the drain. :-\

CM1150V Meets DOCSIS 3.1 Spec, But Comcast Doesn't

This is a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem that is claimed to work with Comcast Xfinity. Unfortunately, Comcast does not operate their cable plant in accordance with the DOCSIS 3.1 specification. As a consequence, this modem may or may not work for you. The specific issue is with the upstream path. The CM1150V is designed to accommodate upstream channels up to 204MHz, which is a requirement of the DOCSIS 3.1 spec. However, Comcast is operating upstream channels up to at least 367MHz. This is well beyond what the CM1150V hardware is designed to do, and there is nothing that Netgear support or a Comcast field technician can do about it. The only solution is for Comcast to modify their frequency plan to comply with the DOCSIS 3.1 specification. Here are a few more details, for those interested. The CM1150V uses an BGA3131 integrated circuit from NXP Semiconductors for its upstream amplifier. The BGA3131 is designed as a DOCSIS 3.1 upstream amplifier, and is a perfectly reasonable choice if you're building a cable modem to DOCSIS 3.1 specifications. Since it is designed to cover the range from 5MHz to 204MHz, when Comcast instructs the modem to transmit at 367MHz the only surprise is that it works at all. How well it works will depend on the power level that Comcast is requesting, the ambient temperature of the cable modem (warmer is better), chip-to-chip variations in the semiconductor manufacturing process, and maybe the phase of the moon. The situation is actually a bit worse than described above. According to the DOCSIS 3.1 specification, the CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System, that is, Comcast's end of the connection) cannot direct the CM (Cable Modem) to transmit upstream QAM channels at frequencies above 85MHz. So Comcast is egregiously violating the specification. The CM1150V would probably be happy if the upstream channels were kept to 204MHz and below. Even though that technically violates the specification, it's within the range of what the hardware can handle. To summarize, this seems to be a perfectly fine DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem, but it is being sold as being compatible with Comcast Xfinity, which is it clearly, by design, not. So caveat emptor, YMMV, and all that.

This is one of the DOCSYS 3.1 routers recommended by Comcast/Xfinity. Obviously wanted to purchase one rather than pay them a monthly fee. This modem is WAY TOO flaky. Normal resets to fix a connection issue never work, forcing me to perform a factory reset, every time. Although product specs show 4 ethernet cable connections, I was told that Xfinity enables just 1. Which leaves the remaining 3 connections useless. Very unhappy with the product, thus far.
