I bought this along with the SURFboard SB6141 to replace the Comcast modem/router. It was more than I wanted to spend but after dealing with Comcast and the painfully slow speeds plus paying $8 a month rental I was pretty much fed up. I wrote about the slow speeds in my review of the SURFboard SB6141 but I'll recap; prior to this combo my download and upload speeds were both below 7Mbps. After pairing the SURFboard SB6141 modem and the R7000 my download speed in my first test (wireless) was 73.89Mbps download and 12.15Mbps upload. We have a 2 story home and although it's not located in the best spot (downstairs kinda in the corner of the house) reception is awesome. 83% is the least strength I'm getting at the furthest spot from the router....upstairs at the opposite end of the 2100SF house. Setup was not too bad. I ran into a bit of a problem that was probably my fault. Everything was working fine until I changed the default name and password then I lost my internet connection. I tried everything and finally gave up and hit the reset button. After that everything has worked perfectly. Pairing with other devices, samsung tablet, Kindles, phones, printer, smart tv, has been flawless. Make sure to follow the direction of unplugging your modem and then plugging it back it before connecting to the R7000...if you don't go through this step you may have problems. Can't go wrong with the R7000!

Ok, I wish I would have read the review above mine, before I started to setup this router. I have set up dozens of routers over the years, and consider myself a network expert. I was baffled when I could not get this router to connect to my cable modem, even though I did everything the same exact way that I have over many network installs. The router was online, and all lights were right, but no internet, and no access to my large home/business network. Calling netgear on the weekend is a daunting task, since the support is obviously in another part of the world, where English is not the first language, and trying to explain what your problem is doesn't usually pan out very well.. Anyways, to make a long story short, I somehow got the wireless to work, and then the wired connections suddenly were fine as well. I think I will be trying the above posters idea next time, and try getting the router setup first, then connecting the modem! Its super fast, giving me wireless speeds equal to my wired connection, and the distance the wireless covers with a strong signal now is incredible; we have a 3 level house, and even in the basement, 2 levels below the router, I can stream Netflix and hulu perfectly from my smart tv. If you need range, and speed, and are willing to pay the price; jump on this bad boy now!

I was in the market for a new router that would provide faster wireless speeds. I have a 50 Mb Comcast connection that typically provides about 55Mb on devices connected via ethernet, but I was seeing wireless speeds between 5Mb and 10Mb on my wireless devices regardless of distance to the router. I had Dish network at home and the Hopper and Joeys all connect as wired devices. So, there are 6 Dish devices, plus 3 additional ethernet connected devices and ~20 wireless devices at any given time. After doing a fairly deep review of the Linksys AC1900, WRT 1900, and the Nighthawk. I went with the Nighthawk because of the advertised advantages with streaming video and gaming. Setup was easy. I chose manual setup because I wanted to set my wireless channel (using Channel 11 on 2.4Ghz), SSID, and passwords. All other configurations were left at default. Immediately my wireless devices that were connected showed download speeds of over 50Mb. Beautiful and above my expectations. I currently have 25 devices connected to the network in one way or another and am seeing iPad download speeds of 40Mb from rooms away from the router. I will move qualified gaming and streaming devices to the 5.0Ghz band and see if I can improve any more. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with this router. It looks amazing and performs beyond my expectations. I would definitely recommend this to a friend.

This router is big enough to handle our smart tv, apple tv, xbox, all our portable devices. There is no delay or buffering. With that being said, the set up was a nightmare. The instructions include a customer service number to call for assistance of setting up. At the Best Buy store, the sales person told me that Netgear would be able to help set it up. I even told the Best Buy sales person that this was for use with my smart tv. My husband was on the phone with Netgear for an hour setting up our devices when he was told they would not go any further without payment of a "tech support" contract or something like that. It was completely underhanded. They did not mention that at the beginning of the call. They did not tell us that if you need assistance for a smart tv, that is considered a complex device and it will be an additional cost. By the time that my husband was involved in the installation with the assistance of Netgear, it was too late to end the call. They charged another $70 for the set up and 6 months of tech support. It was another hour on the phone to finish all of the set up once we agreed to pay the extra fee. The product is good, but be aware of possible hidden costs. Best Buy should also tell the customers about this so we are not surprised when there is another charge. The whole process was very frustrating. Now that it is working, it is a great product. But, we felt very taken advantage of. In the end, we got what we wanted and it works great.

Since adding a smart TV and two smart blu-ray disk to our line up of tech products, we found our wireless connections dropping very frequently, streaming movies would stall/ buffer and my sons Xbox would cut off mid games. Our previous router, a Linksys, worked amazingly until just recently. After going online to forums trying to troubleshoot the connectivity issues, it was decided that it could no longer handle the demands of the household that included three ipads, three iphones, a Galaxy S4, a notebook computer, a kindle, a satellite radio, the game plus the three new (smart) additions. We researched what would be the best router to handle all those wireless devices with many of them being in use at the same time and landed on this one. The hubby gawked at the price but agreed to it anyways. I had the router set-up in minutes and decided fairly quickly that this thing is worth its cost. We were zooming at speeds I didn't realize we had. The kids were quite happy with the number of bars they gained while in their rooms where before they had hardly any signal strength. We did a test run with all gadgets on and running for 30 full minutes and we didn't encounter a single issue with speed, loading or buffering. If you are thinking about this router even just a little bit, just bite the bullet and go for it. YOu won't even miss the $200 dollars once you see what this router can do.

I have a plethora of devices in my home all using a singular wireless access point. I upgraded from an Apple Timecapsule-v2 (mainly out of frustration with the iOS) and was super excited to pick the "top of the line" router... I was disappointed. The product was easy to set up, configured everything in minutes, access control, wireless channels, DHCP pools, the works. The MAC logging feature it has built in to make joining new devices to the ACL is wonderful so you don't have to dig for addresses on all of your stuff, particularly when a guest comes to visit for more than a few hours. I work from home, and VPN in to work every day, I pass a lot of traffic back and forth, and the router couldn't handle it, and I'd get disconnected fairly often. Considering how much I was passing back and forth, I wasn't terribly surprised, nor upset. My gaming machine sits in the other room, out of the office, and uses a WiFi connection, guess what else was constantly disconnected? My phone, streaming a video for longer than 5 minutes... disconnected, seeing a pattern I adjusted freqs and channels to no avail. Switch back to my 5 year old Apple router, every problem disappeared. On a side note,I did run a long Ethernet cord to my gaming machine, to test it, and it worked fine. I tried enabling the QoS, disabling it and tweaked some internal settings, best I could do was drop my D/C rate to about once every 40 minutes. While a good device, not a great one, and for this price, that's unacceptable.

    Best Router ever owned

I previously had an ARRIS SURFboard SBG6700AC modem/router that I purchased new. We had to exchange it 3 times due to poor signal output and it kept dropping the WI-FI signal. We thought it was a problem on our service providers end, but after having them out on (2) separate occasions to analyze our network, we were told that it was the Modem/Router combo that was causing all of our problems. The Spectrum tech actually advised us to use the service providers modem at no additional cost to us and purchase the Nighthawk Router for our WI-FI. This was the best advice that we have had on our Wi-Fi network. The Nighthawk was an easy setup and it works like a champ. This is the best Wi-Fi network we have ever owned. It has great range throughout our 2400 sqft home and over 100 ft from my house. My WI-FI speeds now exceed 100Mps consistently and we have no buffering when streaming movies.

My old Rosewill router started to reboot by itself when more than one devices using it. I decided to buy this one instead of the Asus RT-AC68R because its faster dual-core CPU and at least $20 cheaper (BestBuy price-matched Amazon's price when it was on-sale in Amazon so I saved more $$). Some tech reviewers I read, stated that the Asus RT-AC68R had a better range/signal during their test but not much I think (I will need to be quite far, outside of my home perimeter to tell the difference). I won't have the router to be very far away from all of my devices but I do need a reliable good/strong connection. My devices get a better strong signal strength compared to using my old cheap Rosewill router. With the new 5GHz WiFi connection, I don't have the 2.4GHz WiFi crowd/interference anymore with my neighbors' signals. The 2.4GHz WiFi is getting too crowded around my area. This router so far performs well, and it has a good security feature, its router configuration interface/menu is okay but it can be better improved, not a big issue, as long as I can find/set what I need to change, and as long as it works. It has a 3.0 USB interface where I can plug-in an external hard-drive or thumb drive to be shared among devices. Overall, it's worth the upgrade. It seems to be good for media streaming as well. This device is still new for me. Hopefully it will last for quite some time.

To put it simply, Netgear delivered an exceptional entry into premium routers with the Nighthawk R7000. The wireless signals reach all areas of my house and at crazy speeds. I have a 105mbps connection in my home and I get every megabit I pay for using this router on both wired and wireless over the AC frequency. My iPhone 6 supports 802.11ac and my speeds are equally as fast over wireless as my devices are wired into the router's gigabit ports. Another niche worth noting about this router is the QoS. Being able to "partition" bandwidth eliminates so much headache from having multiple devices streaming, gaming and browsing in the house. No one gets a hiccup when we're all connected on the internet. Parental controls are in depth and give you a good amount of control over your kid's internet consumption. Now here's the real treat for all the Apple users: Airprint. This is one of the few routers that supports Airprint and it is easy to set up. This router also brings a backup feature for if you want to connect an external HDD into it via either USB 2.0 or USB 3.0. You can have it backup your computer or use it as network storage with little to no hassle. I have no real complaints about this router. You can even turn the LED lights off either through the back or in the router's settings, and it'll be something you consider if you sleep in the same room as the router. #the lights are very bright# Other than that, 5 out of 5. I almost pulled the trigger on a different router but I'm glad I went with this one. Couldn't be more satisfied.

If there was not a problem with the configuration software I would have given this router a 5 star rating. After much research I decided this was the router for me to replace my combo modem/router. It was certainly more then I wanted to pay but the reviews are great. While the WiFi works GREAT all over my house connecting to the router configuration is LOUSY. I have 2 PCs connected to this router. One is hardwired to router and the other is connected wirelessly. The PC hardwired can connect to the router configuration software by using the IP address or routerlogin.net. The laptop connected wirelessly either times out or connects and the links don't work. Netgear does provide a downloadable "Genie" app but it only provides a minimum connection to the router configuration. It is apparent that this is a major issue as a search on the web gets many hits about this problem and the Netgear forum also has many threads about this issue. Either Netgear purposely refuses to fix the problem or doesn't know how to fix it. I am very disappointed that a major networking equipment vendor can't or won't resolve this issue. I have contacted their support and communicating in English is a major problem or they provide completely unusable solutions also because I think there is a disconnect when using English. I have had this router a few days but I am still hoping that Netgear will come through with an answer but if not its going back to Best Buy.

This router has a 1 ghz processor and really is a dedicated computer meant to handle all the router tasks. I got it because I needed a router that could handle the faster uploads and downloads of my ISP, and also handle my house needs which is very heavy use involving at least 3 computers. This router has been up to the task and seems to allocate bandwidth to where it is needed. Compared to my previous router, it more quickly loads pages to watch from the internet. As a bonus, I am able to plug in a thumb drive (one with 120 gb of memory) and have this be a shared hard drive with the computers in my house and also with my brother who lives 14 hours away. All the functions are accessible through a browser page, whether or not I am online, and is fairly easy to set up. I have not used all the functions. I only need the router's handling of the upload and download traffic, wifi, and the shared hard drive. The only downside I find is that it was more spendy than any other router I have purchased before, being $150. I had paid, the most 90 dollars for my first one, and then bought used ones from $5 to $20. This one was a leap in my budget, but it did seem necessary and seemed to be worth it.

I bought this router b/c I needed to extend the coverage area of my modem / router that was provided by my ISP. This is a great router and well worth the money. It provides extensive coverage and can handle multiple people / devices at once. Since buying this router I have moved and now have it hooked up to a Motorola cable modem - I have Comcast and instead of paying them a $10 monthly rental fee for their modem/router it made more sense to just buy a modem and hook this router up to it for my wifi. I have a 2 story house with a basement and there are no dead spots and I get great coverage with this router. My daughter will be watching Netflix on an iPad upstairs, my wife will be on the internet in the kitchen, and I will be using the wifi signal for something in the basement and it keeps up with everything. I have a pretty good sized yard (about a 1/2 acre lot) and I can get a wifi signal anywhere in the yard, which is nice b/c I like to listen to Pandora while mowing. I'm not a very good computer / network guy, but setting this up was simple and easy. I also like the Netgear Genie app that allows you to monitor various diagnostics and information about your router from you smartphone or computer. Overall, great router to buy if you need extensive coverage and/or have lots of devices.

I recently moved and did not want to pay monthly for the cable modem. So, I walked into my favourite store (Bestbuy).... I wanted to pick up a router-modem combo. The Blue shirt I spoke to recommeneded to get a dedicated modem and dedicated router. At first, my thought was he is just trying to sell two products...But, boy he was right. I bought a Netgear NightHawk 1900 and paired it with a NetGear CM600 Cable modem and it was amazing..... - Netgear’s new iOS app was easy to setup. - All hooked up in 5 mins. - Looks cool with those antennas. - I have a 300 mbps line from Optimum and have around 15 to 17 devices on it. - The covergae is great you dont need a extender for 1400 sqrft house. I live on the 3rd flow and even get connection down in the parking. Speeds you have to see to believe. I constantly get 100 mbps on all my devices most times. Added a image of speedtest i took. Cons: - Have had issues with Netgear once their equipment gets a bit older. I had a N600 Cable modem which worked great for 2 yrs. Then suddenly started dropping connection and had to replace. - Netgear is not known to push firmware updates to older devices...hope they update this for a while. So, have to wait and see how it goes...so good so far!!!!!!!!

Nighthawk was a Nightmare! My other NetGear Router lasted 5 years and when it came time for a refresh I immediately purchased another NetGear. This was a Nightmare.. I doubt that it was actually up and running with a wireless signal for more than 5 minutes at a time before it crashed. I was constantly rebooting the router. I ran troubleshooting measures, and then gave up, and sent it back to NetGear as it was still under warranty. I didn't know if it was my router or the Internet so I purchased a Linksys router instead just to have a wireless connection. Fortunately, it worked without any problems. Of course I threw the NETGEAR box out so now I am working with NetGear directly on an RMA. This purchase was a NIGHTMARE and a complete waste of time. The only think I can think of was that it was a defective unit. That being said, I have read how many people have had terrible firmware issues with the router. Needless to say, since I moved over to the Linksys I have not had problems. I willl avoid NetGear in the future and stick with Linksys from now on.

Note: This review is with DD-WRT firmware not the stock Netgear firmware. The Netgear firmware is not as good as DD-WRT as DD-WRT adds much more features & customization. Also I have this router on max power output & overclocked to 2.4Ghz. Router is very stable & never crashes. I am a power user so I will be very critical in my review. The speeds on both the 2.4GHz & 5GHz bands are great when close to the router. The wireless range on the router is better than any other router I have ever used however it could still be better. It does fully cover my ~2,500 sq. ft. house however @ the outer limits the signal is very weak & the speeds drops. Please also note that my area has multiple Wifi signals, @ least 20 or so networks so there are lots of interference. The range & speed is especially true in the 5GHz band as that band by nature of design always has more issues going through walls than 2.4GHz. For 2.4GHz I have it set up with a middle base channel & full bandwidth. For 5.8GHz I have it set up with the upper most channels as those allow for a full 1W of power. I also have a USB 3.0 HD attached to it using it as a NAS. It works very well & the speeds are acceptable, about 15 - 20MBs, however the speed can be better. I believe the speed limitation is in the router CPU as that is the case with generally any router. Overall I have used this router for 1+ years & am very satisfied with this router however there is always still some room for improvement.

Upgraded from a 6yr. Old NetGear gigabit wireless n router that had some range issues in or new house. The signal would be very flaky, especially in the front room were I was getting allot of interference from other networks (all of the 2.4GZ channels has atleast one network). The back room is an addition and I had to use another NetGear router (wireless n 150mbs) as a access point to use my chromecast. After quickly setting this up, which was far easier than the older routers. I placed it in the same location as the old router (in the basement on top of an I beam) and never looked back. The beam forming ensures a strong signal anywere in the hose. Also I'm the only 5gz network on my block so that really helps. The biggest surprise was that I no longer need an access point for my back room the nighthawk is going through a 4 course brick wall with no problems, then through 2 more courses to cover my backyard up to the garage (about 30 feet or so). Performance had been great however I can't comment on wireless ac as I don't have any ac equipped devices.also haven't used the USB Ports. But it did solve my biggest wifi problems so I'm satisfied. I did have a little trouble setting up my chromecasts, but that's due to using the 5gz network on my phone and the chromecast only supporting 2.4gz. Do the setup on the 2.4 then switch back to 5gz and you'll have no problems.

I had this router for about 2 months now. At first it worked great. I really loved the range and the speed with this router. Unfortunately it didn't last. Less than 2 months since I purchased it it started to lock up. Both wired and wireless devices would lose connection. The only way to get it back to work is to power-cycle the router. I have to do this at least once a day. This issue is apparently common. You can find many complaints about this problem online. I tried factory reset several times and flashed the latest firmware twice. It did not help. The worst part is Netgear does not stand behind their products. I was offered a replacement with a refurbished unit. I will not settle for a refurb if i paid almost $200 for a router that lasted 2 months. Not a good deal if you ask me. Also other than paying for the shipping Netgear will charge you additional fee depending on how soon do you need the router back. I understand nothing is perfect and every now and then you may get a bad unit but Netgear should offer a new unit replacement for the first 6 months at least. Even longer for a product that has know reliability issues. I will not buy another Netgear product.

Wifi Signal Drops Way Too Often

    Posted
    Chris

I was very excited about getting a new router since my old one was a $20 wifi router years ago and it was clearly time for that one to go. I decided that having a fast and stable connection were well worth the cost of a premium router so I decided to go with the Nighthawk AC1900. The first one I bought was okay but the signal still dropped about 2 or 3 times a day. So I returned it and got a new one. The new one acted about the same, 2 to 3 drops a day. This was back in Dec/Jan when I got it, but I kept it since it was still somewhat usable. Now that it is April, it is starting to drop anywhere from 10 to 20 times a day making it almost unusable for work or for gaming. I'm not sure if it's the fact that I live in an apt and the router can't handle all of the signals around me, but this router just does not do the job. I've tried updating the firmware, channel selection is on auto, and it can't maintain a stable connection. Even when I hard wire into the router, I get drops just as often as if I were on wifi. I've tested the internet without the router and everything goes without a hitch. Not sure what I'll do with this as I can't return it anymore and I don't want to send it in for repairs and have to go without internet for a week as I need it for work. Overall, this router doesn't do the job.

I deliberated for hours and days over what my next router should be. Dropping up to $200 on a router was daunting and I wanted to make sure I made the right decision. Coupling this purchase with CAT6 to ensure I wasn't bottlenecking myself, I set up this router and was blown away. It's amazing how much my old router had been throttling me. This router is able to handle 90mb/s (based on my tests), which is as high as my ISP goes to my knowledge. All of my devices are hooked in, some wireless and some cabled, but all of them experience good to breakneck speeds. My game consoles rooms away still run fantastically with no lag in game and my wired PC is able to download 40GB games in 20-40 minutes. The router also offers a solid suite of features if that's something you're into, but nothing too crazy or state of the art compared to its high end competitors. This purchase was revolutionary. That said, this purchase is a bit overkill for most. If you have a small household with 6 or less devices, there are cheaper options for you that will feel just fine. Depending on what you need out of your internet as well will determine how much you need something of this caliber. General Facebook browsers with an occasional Youtube video session will likely not see any major improvements in their experience.

    Huge Wireless Range

Ok, i have been trough 3 routers so far since i moved into my new condo in a newly remodeled old building with a 12" concrete walls, flors and ceilling plus all the steel beams that try to stop challenge every wireless signal. The first router was my old netgear wndr3700, had it for two years without a single problem and a great range in my old house but it could not reach the second bedroom in my new place, then i switched to a Linksys EA6400 for improved range and speed based on internet reviews, the network speed was great on the 5MHz band but on the 2.4MHz it had constant disconections and the range did not improved vs the 3700 i was still unable to reach my 2nd bedroom. I tried wifi repeaters (suck) and a powerline adapter (good speeds but needed an AP to become wireless). After much research i came down to three options, the Linksys WRT1900Ac the Asus RT-AC68U and the wonderful Netgear R7000. I decided to try the R7000 and i am impressed with its range, at the spots that i was not able to connect before i am getting a very strong signal now on both bands. if you are looking for a router with a great range, trust me this is the way to go.
