    Excellent router for Mac users

I've long ago accepted that routers basically need to be replaced every few years to keep them running smoothly. As a Mac user I always got Apple's Time Capsule routers—even though they're obscenely over priced—because they were easy to set up. I finally gave this bad boy a try and I'm glad I did. Getting it up and running the way I wanted took only a few minutes of fiddling around with the web-based config. It was no more difficult than using Apple's Airport Utility app. As a bonus, it's delivering much faster WiFi speeds, and it apparently has much farther reach than the Apple TimeCapsule because I used to have to have an Airport Express set up as an extender at the other end of the house to get any signal. Now I get a strong signal with no extender at all. The ONLY drawback I see is that the only USB 3 port is on the front of the router. I guess someone might find that useful, but I find it ugly and annoying. If you're a Mac user tired of paying $400 for the Airport Time Capsule, just get this and a cheap 1 or 2 TB storage drive to work with TimeMachine and you'll have the same basic setup only it'll work better and you'll save about $100-$150.

    Very reliable router

I had a decent, fairly expensive Buffalo router, but I kept having reliability issues where I had to reset it ever couple of days, I'm guessing it just couldn't handle the load anymore. So I upgraded. For the price, this router has a ton of consumer friendly features, I'm not using of them (like NAS or iTunes server support), so I can't comment. I just have a basic wireless network, or two to be specific from this router. It's faster, range is a little better, but for me, the biggest thing is that after few days of use, it's been perfectly stable with anything I was throwing at it. I also like how quickly devices connect to it, after I enter the password and hit enter, it takes a second to connect and I'm online (I was used to it taking 15-20 seconds before). It says it has some king of XBox One prioritization, idk for sure, Xbox works beautifully, but I feel good knowing it's there. The device itself is huge, it definitely looks powerful. Netgear Genie software looks nice, but I'm just sticking to the web interface. There was an update with a very long list of improvements, it updates with no complications. It was between this one and ASUS Dark Night for me, honestly, I had some issues with Netgear in the past, and wanted to try ASUS, but my store didn't have them in stock so I went with this one and I'm glad I did. It just works, strong, reliable and flexible. I'm expecting it to last me few years.

Trying to stream HDR Netflix,Amazon, etc so finally switched from centurylink(10Mbps tests at 6) to high-speed internet with comcast(55 Mbps tests at 65+). Wow I can really see the difference and no more buffering. This change meant a new docsis modem(Arris-separate review) and figured I would upgrade my trusty 5yr old Netgear 600 router. I really didn't expect much but maybe better wifi coverage. I am blown away by the performance difference. Things have come a LONG way in 5yrs! This new Stealth ac1900 covers the entire house at 30-40Mbps wifi speeds. Don't even need the 2 dlink extenders i used with old 600. And the best I could get out of old wifi was 3-4Mbps so streaming to Rokus in bedrooms was painful. No more. Setup was easy except never got the QOS setup right. I don't really need it since I have the main HDR units(Vizio M65-d0 display and Roku Ultra) Hard wired with 15ft cat-6 cables. Everthing else is wifi-2 other rokus, 2 laptops, 1 desktop,1Tablet, google home, home mini, 3chromecast audios, 4 android phones. The old 600 was and still is a great reliable router but it wasn't really designed for all this new stuff. Well worth it to get the newer capabilities in the ac1900. Highly recommended CC

I was using the Wi-Fi built into my Century Link DSL modem and it did not have as much reach or speed as I wanted, so on advise from a knowledgeable salesrep I took a risk on this much higher priced wireless modem. I did not know wireless could be this fast ... wow! I have 25mbs internet connection, and am getting the full bandwidth over wireless ... as a comparison I was only getting 1-2mbs over the built in wifi. I found that I could not communicate to other devices on my wired network and the documentation did not cover this common scenario where I just wanted to add another Wi-Fi hotspot to my network, not create a new sub-network. After much digging and a little luck, I got it to work so that all of my networked devices (wired and wireless) could communicate. In case others are interested: 1) Configure the device while disconnected from your network. 2) Set the IP settings to match your network settings and Disable DNS. 3) Connect to your network using one of the network ports ... DO NOT use the WAN port. This device supports dual band and has a dual core processor. Newer devices take advantage of the 5G band, but older devices can still connect. I am not a heavy media streamer, but all family members stream video at times so it adds up. For a smaller family, one of the less expensive models may be enough.

    Do not buy this router

Whatever you do, do not buy this router. You will be very disappointed and aggravated. I bought this router a few months back and all the reviews were great when I purchased it. Setup was easy and my WiFi speeds were amazing at first; however, that slowly declined after a few months. Being that the router was still under warranty, I contacted Netgear. Their customer support was great, but they were unable to fix the issue. They ended up sending me a new router which I was very please about. Unfortunately when I installed the new router I had the exact same issue and was immediately on the phone with tech support again. This time I gave the tech full access to my PC and router where he went through different settings, firmware, and channel configuration to no avail. He then transferred the case over to engineering where I spent the next week and half troubleshooting with them. While the whole time not having speeds faster than dial up. During this time I spent more time researching the slow WiFi connection with the R7000, and I was astonished to see on Netgears community page of how many people had the exact same issue that never got resolved. Now I'm still waiting on the engineers debating on whether I should just go buy another brand or hope they somehow make it right. Again stay away from this router

I was looking to replace an old Linksys router that kept dropping wireless connectivity to my devices and who's signal wouldn't reach my basement very well. I found myself rebooting it every 2-3 days in order to get my Android phone to connect. After talking to the Best Buy salesperson, I decided on the Netgear Nighthawk. I took it home dreading the amount of work I would need to do to set up my new router and re-attach all my devices. However, I needn't have worried. The hardest part was crawling under my desk and disconnecting my old LinkSys. I followed the easy to use directions and got my wired connection to my desktop computer set up almost immediately. After downloading and installing the recommended patches and software, I went about setting up my other wireless devices. I had never used the push button connectivity before, but it worked like a charm. Within 20 minutes, I had connected both of my Kindle's, my smartphone, BluRay player, SmartTV, and my PS3. Boom, Done! Since connecting it up more than a month ago, I have not experienced a single time where my phone would not connect. Further, I can now stream Netflix movies to my basement devices without the constant buffering that I was experiencing on my old router. The range seems to reach my entire house now! A great decision that has made me very happy now that I can watch "House of Cards" via streaming!

I read a lot of reviews when it comes to spending my money on gadgets, especially routers that are expensive like this one. Let me just say that this is well worth the money! I have Cox as my internet provider and the default router/modem they gave me was absolute garbage. I could barely get Wifi throughout my apartment (only 1200 sq. ft.). However, I bought this router based on the great reviews and it impressed me. I was able not only to get WiFi anywhere in my house, I could get it a few houses down! I pay for extremely fast internet and with this router, it feels like I'm getting my money's worth. I used to game/stream a lot and the configuration settings helped me prioritize gaming and get the best connection possible. You can also prioritize streaming or other devices as well! The amount of features are great and I would definitely recommend this router to anyone looking to upgrade. IT IS WORTH THE MONEY!

Terrible router when using an Xbox one or 360

I bought this router in hopes that my girlfriend and I could both use our Xbox 360s or Xbox Ones at the same time with having to deal with the frustration of NAT issues or constantly being dropped from game lobbies. Unfortunately the nighthawk is not able to deliver. You can only use port forwarding to resolve the NAT issue on one xbox. The router simple doesn't allow to open two IP addresses so more often or not my xbox would show OPEN while hers is STRICT. I contacted Netgear on this issue but they were no help at all. Sometimes after rebooting both Xboxes and the router both would come up showing an OPEN NAT but even then once in a game lobby (Titanfall, COD, Destiny, Halo or GTA to name a few) we could only play together for maybe 30 minutes before one of us would be disconnected with a network error. I contacted Netgear on this issue as well and once again they were no help. They stated they're aware of the issue but there is no resolution at this time. After going over the netgear forums I found others have this issue as well. Turns out the Nighthawk isn't able to route the same source data to the two xboxes at the same time. Instead it just gets confused on which IP to send the traffic to and as a result one of us will get dropped. I find this unacceptable considering the price of the router. DO NOT BUY THIS ROUTER IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE GAME CONSOLE IN YOUR HOME.

Dont buy if you need bridging

Ok let me start out by saying that if I just wanted a wireless router specifically for nothing else but connecting a couple of devices (lan) and standard WAN based activities it would be very good. The range is great etc. No issues so far there. My problem is I needed bridging. My current Linksys worked great for that, but has a firmware problem (that... actually I believe they resolved just recently), where I would lose the routers connectivity to the network in bridge mode. In Non- bridge mode it just didn't support 5G so it conflicted with my Wireless speakers etc. So this router, was seemingly the perfect choice based on my multistory house etc. However, this router ONLY supports bridging based on Wireless to Wireless connectivity. I don't have wireless turned on my primary router (on purpose# and I since the whole point was issues with range of the wireless signal, this, for me, is a terrible model. My Linksys was straight up true lan based bridging, where this one is not. Since I don't have WiFi on my primary router, then this is a waste for me :-#. It's a shame, I really liked it overall but doesn't help that I can't use it for what I wanted to actually use it for. Take heed of that if you want true bridging (not WiFi bridging# The only reason I am saying not to recommend to a friend, is all MY friends need bridging #not everyone does but they do), so no I wouldn't recommend for them.

This router is an excellent performer and so far has been able to handle all the demands of my gadgets with no problems. The range and speed are very impressive specially for gamers or heavy users of streaming services such as Netflix since the wireless performance is very strong therefore gaming or streaming is buttery smooth. Make sure you go into your router settings and activate QoS for upload if you are a gamer or download if you like to stream movies from Netflix, this will allow you to always have the best wireless experience possible. I have attached a very instructive video on setting up the router along with activating QoS. I was a bit hesitant to purchase such a new router due to the bugs associated with newly released hardware but I am extremely happy with this product; I have been in possession of this router for two weeks and so far it has exceeded my expectations. Highly recommended!

Me and my wife both have Xbox Ones, and were having issues playing online games together. After a good month of research and recommendations from friends I went out and got this affordable router. The only reason this is getting 4 stars is because set up was difficult through my Xfinity Modem. I spent the first hour trying to set it up myself, I’m fairly tech savvy and still had issues. I ended up having to call up Xfinity and had the first lady do exactly what I had done then transfer me to an Xfinity "modem/networking specialist". he wasn't much help. after I hung up with Xfinity, I called the Netgear customer support and they had me set up in half an hour. I was still having issues with obtaining the ever elusive open NAT type. I got both Xbox from strict to moderate. From there I was able to do some port triggering and forwarding, and adjusting other setting and have perfect open NAT throughout the whole house. Couldn't recommend it more for online gaming, the separate 2.4 and 5G channels are great. Looks Sharp, and doesn't interfere, or is effected by medium/high end wireless headsets. The only thing that sucks is the setup. Spent a good 6 Hours Getting everything up and running properly. Don't waste too much time with Xfinity if they are your provider, just have them forward your modem then call NETGEAR.

I upgraded from a Linksys that would always drop my signal, get overridden by neighborhood signals and would get bogged down by all of the devices connected at once. This hardware is like night and day difference. My speeds doubled! The beauty of this is that all you need is your smartphone and you can connect it. I love being able to monitor traffic, connections and what devices are connected via my smartphone. Bear in mind, it is much bigger than my last router but I still had no problem finding a spot for it. The "smart connect" feature is beautiful. It connects to the wider range signal when I leave the proximity of the access point, but the downfall is that I have to turn off the wifi on my device (phone, laptop etc) and then reconnect to get back into the fast lane. A minor inconvenience but doesn't detract from the overall greatness. So far, I've had ZERO issues.

It's huge. The Netgenie interface is fabulous; very easyto set-up, to change settings and to visually map your network. I upgraded from an old Cisco that was flashed to dd-wrt and a proven workhorse but it lacked ipv6 and ac wi-fi. The Netgear chooses which band to maximize performance on multiple devices. My major issues with the device are cosmetic. I mount my router high on the wall, upside down apparently, as the NETGEAR logo is now facing me upside down. The operating LEDs are too bright, so bright in fact, they cast shadows in a dark room and kept me awake the first night. Luckily, there is a setting in the "advanced" settings of the Netgenie to disable them; If not, I would have returned it. I still had to Sharpie over the power light turn it into an indicator and not a night-light. I've only been using it about a week so I can not yet speak to some of the features or it's durability and reliability.

I upgraded to this router from an old Apple Airport Extreme. I was concerned that my old one was starting to go because I was having streaming issues. The setup of this one wasn't too bad. My only issue is that the speed on one of my laptops seems to drop and will sometimes cause the router to reboot. It only happens when one specific laptop turns on and I'm yet sure where the issue truly is; the laptop or the router (Issue happens after Windows reinstall and also happens when I swap hard drives back to Linux). All of my other wireless devices (laptops, phones, tablet, etc...) work fine. Streaming issue is still present and my old router can handle the same speed. I'm really just keeping it because it's easy to login to this router from Windows or Linux than the Airport Extreme was. P.S. Don't bother downloading the app to your computer. The mobile app is handy but the desktop app gave me issues. It's easy enough to just login through a web browser.

After 6 months of calling tech support for Time Warner, research, trial and error I ended up with this Netgear Nighthawk r7000. Almost every tech site rating routers places this router well within the top 5 routers to buy, and I can see why. I currently pay for 50 MB download and 5 MB upload speeds, I am consistently pulling 117 MB downloads, uploading at 12 MB visit WIFI according to OOkla speed test. I am utilizing my Motorola SBG6580 all in one surfboard as a stand alone modem while using the Netgear Nighthawk r7000 as my wireless and wired router, the performance of the combination is astounding. Buy this product, you will not regret it. Used a Time Warner combination all in one at time of sign up, terrible. Constant reseting, devices not loading, devices disconnecting and the speeds were 35-40/2-5, insanely slow, we could not even stream Netflix. I then switched to the Motorola SBG6580 (at a cost of $179) to improve speeds. While our speeds did go to an average of 65-70/5-7 we still had major traffic issue, disconnection issues, range issues and constant need to restart. The combination of the Motorola and Nighthawk was an absolute home run, one happy networked family here. James B NC.

I had to go out and purchase the Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 router to replace an Asus router that was starting to give me problems. This model does not represent the latest and greatest in WiFi routers but, then again, it is also priced at a much more reasonable price point. Prior to purchase, after giving it some thought, I decided not to "future proof" my router purchase by purchasing a more expensive model with features/capabilities that aren't that useable in the current day. It didn't make sense for me to pay up to have the ability to access faster wireless spectrum that is non-existent in most products. While Netgear's Nighthawk app and user interface could learn a lesson or two from their competitors at Asus, I have no complaints about the router itself. Quality product at a reasonable price.

I would have given it 4.5 stars but Best Buy system does not allow that. I recently replaced an older series Netgear router with the somewhat pricy Nighthawk A1900. Our 8 year old router worked great though recently we had noticed it seemed to become more and more limited as the demands of addition wireless devices increased. I do wish routers in general, routers would be equipped with more wired networking ports but that’s another story. While setup the Nighthawk, it had a problem properly connecting to anything after it up-dated itself. The problem was finally corrected by a complete reboot of both the modem and router, instead of just the router by itself. The unit now works great, speed when streaming is really good with very little to no buffers and the range covers my entire acre and a half (so far no dead spots). I do wish there would be a way to turn off or reduce the brightness of the LEDs on the front of the unit without having to turn the entire unit off at night. The lights on the unit are small but throw a bright glow in the dark. Now all there is to do is hope this unit out preforms and last as good as the last one did.

This router does what it says it will & it's coverage in my house and outside it are good. I also bought this router because it is docsis 3.0 or higher, which is a standard for routers. My Wi-fi speeds are as high each media device, such as my PC's wireless adapter will handle. It runs at 433mbps, on the 5G band because that is the PC's max. Check or review your media products to see what maximum wi-fi they will handle. If your tablet will only handle 65 mbps, then it won't operate any faster with a 5G band router capable of speeds up to 600 MB. My speeds did improve as much as they were capable of. I still have my Xbox connected by cable for best speed. Connecting to your router with a browser is supported with a good downloadable Netgear app for PC; I believe it is called Netgear Genie. The Netgear Nighthawk Android app doesn't really allow you to make any substantial changes to your router settings except maybe to update the router & adjust access to the router. While there is good service with personal tech support, I believe the free support only lasts 30-45 days.

The Specs/Price look great, but within a few months the router would start dropping connections. It started out Random, every couple weeks, but now it's a couple times an hour. NetGear makes you pay for technical support after 90 days, even to get an RMA. Look it up..... It's a well documented issue. "R7000 drops connection" "Knighthawk Drops connection" Mine was stone dead within 6 months. I tried both Factory and OSS firmawares ad the problem persisted. That's means faulty hardware. Even when it was new, the Gigabit WAN could only pass 315 to 325 Mbps (Qos, SPI, VPN, NAT, DHCP, etc.. disabled). After I replaced it with a purpose built firewall I was getting 480 from my ISP. It does not perform to what they advertise. I swicthed it to Access Point only since my wifi devices can't use all that bandwidth anyway. Now, it doesn't work at all and neither does anything in my smart home as a result. $150 paperweight.

I have a small house and even though I used the best routers and modems (tried many over the years after reading tons of reviews and speaking to many tech support people) but my connection was always super erratic, whether it was with Verizon or TWC, with speeds going from 20 mbps to no connection at all for hours and hours. It seems something is causing interference but no tech expert can determine WHAT (supposedly the equipment to determine that is too expensive). After many many years of trying various providers and products, this was suggested by a supervisor at TWC (after I blew a gasket) and it actually made a diffference! I told him I wish I'd been told about this product years ago. The connection is still not 100% stable speed-wise (there is still some unknown factor that is causing interference), but since using this, I have never been completely disconnected and unable to reconnect to the Internet. Fingers crossed that it keeps working, because at the prices TWC charges, I was paying a fortune for a really poor connection. I've had better connections in out of the way third world countries, so I'm always amazed at how bad and unstable connections are here... Anyway, I would definitely recommend trying this product when experiencing problems and all other Wireless N routers, range expanders, etc. have failed.
