I just moved into a house in a rural setting. I don't own the house but it comes with the employment position I am in. It is a rather large house - ranch-styled with a full finished basement. My office is in the basement and unfortunately that is where I would have to place a wireless router. We have cable tv though not hi def. The house was wired for 2 Ethernet connections. There are 6 people with a number of PCs tablets etc. The house is well built and my poor N router struggled to get its signal out of the basement. So I bought this Netgear Router and it solved most of the wireless issues I had in this house. I did add a range extender to boost coverage upstairs and on the front porch and the patio in the back. For under $200 I upgraded a network that was designed in the 90's to a stable usable wireless network. And I did not have to ask my employer to upgrade the wired network in the house. Before I installed this router and extender, our cell phones were unusable. Now, with Wifi calling, our cell phones work fine. I don't know if I could do anything different that would work better. For what it's worth, I tried a Linksys router but had to return that and Best Buy did price match the Netgear Router

Possibly the best router ever made

I rarely take the time to write a review on anything I buy or own, however, this router's sheer excellence has pushed me to write my opinion and experience with it. This router will handle whatever you throw at it with insane speed and reliability, all by providing very impressive range for N clients (about double the distance) and quite literally multiple times the throughput of my Apple Extreme 6th Gen. **Apple Extreme @120 ft. distance - 14Mbps ***Netgear Nighthawk @120 ft. distance - 75Mbps. I attached a USB 3.0 HDD to it and NAS functionality flies, resulting in 20% faster file transfer rates over Ethernet than plugged into USB3 equipped desktop. Netgear has done a brilliant job with their first AC router, an absolute must buy if you're in the market for a future-proofed high end router.

    Great router when it works

Hooked this router up last night at 6pm. Worked great! Range was excellent along with being very fast. 2pm today, the 2.4ghz network was unreachable but the 5ghz seemed fine. Figured I'd call netgear to troubleshoot vs. rebooting it (since it's a $200 router#. Took me 3 calls and over an hour for them to tell me they wanted to downgrade the firmware, and if that didn't fix it I should return it to the store. They had no interest in trying to figure out the problem at all. I asked for higher level support. They next tech was very nice but just wanted to change wireless settings. I asked if there were logs or something to look at but apparently not. She had no idea how to troubleshoot an issue. Wanted me to change the SSID and channel for the 2.4 network along with other settings all at once. No way that would help zero in on the cause. I agreed to the least likely fix of changing the SSID #no way that was the problem) but of course that reboots the router, and fixed the problem. Of course not the change, but the reboot. I knew that would clear the problem but was hoping to let netgear see the problem in action but wasn't to be. I don't think netgear has any interest in troubleshooting problems. They want to Band-Aid and move on. Very disappointing. Had high hopes for this router.

    Hands down best router ever

I have been relying on my cable modem/router provided by my local cable company as my go to wireless device. After having wireless issues for almost 6 months with over 20 devices connected, I decided to figure out what the problem was. I have been having connection problems, speed drops, wireless signal drops.. basically everything you don't want to happen that ruins your internet experience. I also have a guest house in my backyard where my grandparents live and they rely on the wireless from the house for internet, which is about 200-250 feet away. Did some research and saw this router. Went to Best Buy and bought it. Set up was straight forward. Had to reset the router because it didn't recognize the default password for some reason. After owning for over a month now I can say this is the best router I have ever owned. Never have signal drops. I love running my Xbox One and my Alienware on the 5ghz band and get to interruptions what so ever. Nobody in my neighborhood has a 5ghz network so there is no signal interference. I love the fact that the 2.4ghz and 5ghz run simultaneously. The guest house now receives a full signal off the 2.4ghz band. I have a 50MB internet and I am seeing speeds on wireless that I have never seen before! I am beyond satisfied with this router.

I decided to buy this product based on the glowing reviews from other BB members and the overall performance rating. I have come to regret that decision. No one in my family is happy with the performance of this router. After 2 months of dealing with issues, including a return of the product for a new replacement, I am ready to give up. This router simply can not handle multiple connections to devices and having multiple Xboxes running on my network. The slowdowns and disconnections have lead me to conclude that the network load is too much for the Nighthawk. I will bite the bullet and go with a router that has shown consistently that it can handle our home network traffic. My C7 from TP-LINK was the best router we ever brought. But the great performance only lasted 2 years. I have made sure there are no conflicts with other wireless networks in the area and we carry the fastest TWC residential speed for the internet. I am hugely disappointed with the Netgear wasn't up to the challenge. No doubt the Nighthawk works fine for light to moderate network workload. But having multiple Xboxes with several devices is just too much for the product.

I was having trouble with the range and unreliable connection with my previous router so we decided to spend the money for the Nighthawk router. The set-up is pretty straight forward with only a few very minor issues (when it came to using the set-up wizard). All in all, we were up and running in less than one hour. The first thing I noticed was the increased range and strong signal. The router is located on the second floor of one side of the house and we get a strong signal on the first floor on the opposite side of the house. Our old router dropped the connection at least 4-5 times per week. We have had the Nighthawk router in place for over a week and it has not dropped the connection once. We have 50Mbps Internet Service ot our house. Sitting about 100 feet from the router, I am getting 45 Mbps on the 5G band (I was getting about 18-20 Mbps on the old router). This router was exactly what we were looking for. If I have to say one thing that is not so great, its that it has a larger footprint than our previous routers. I had to rearrange things to find a spot for it, but that is really not a big issue.

Excellent router. Signal strength is ridiculously excellent, it blasts through all my walls and the area where I got the lowest signal is now the same as if I connect the computer directly to the modem, I got full 25/25 mbps speeds after doing a speed test, before it was alternating a sad 1mbps-13 mbps and was not stable. I purchased an extender and it did improve the signal but the speeds weren't where I was satisfied so I thought I give this a try thinking that you get what you paid for and I was right, $200 router, full max speed, $120 extender only half speed. I didn't even need to mess with any advance settings like changing the channels or frequency, so easy to setup up, plug it into the router, connect to the factory network name and default password, 2 clicks , done! Also, you can connect a hard drive to this router to make it a network drive using either usb 2.0 or a faster usb 3.0 connection; havn't messed with that yet but a great feature for the future. Happy camper, I'm returning the extender. Buy this! I was so frustrated and was about to go to the extremes of buying Netgear's $300 router but this one did the job and saved me $100.

    Apalling firmware problems

Product worked fine until I upgraded the firmware to pick up security fixes, and I have had unrelenting problems since. If you are considering this router, then do yourself a favor and check out the Netgear forum. The only way I can explain the firmware problems you will read about is poor QA. It feels like Netgear uses early adopters to identify significant problems such as wifi dropouts and router reboots. I just updated the firmware to current version (1.0.9.60) to resolve a problem where the router was rebooting every 10 minutes. The upgrade seems to have resolved this, but this never occurred with 1.0.9.42, and I have no explanation as to why rebooting the router with .42 failed to resolve the problem. Bottom line is that I have no faith in Netgear's ability to support this product.

i use this router in a small apartment. the performance in the living room where the router is is great. however, i get no signal at all from my bedroom. my bedroom shares a wall with the living room. i have a full five bars where i am right now, on my couch. if i go to the bedroom, literally ten feet and one wall, no bars.....none. the cheapo router provided by my isp is better. now i have to spend another $130 on a range extender or return this near useless product. all because it can not send a signal through one wall 15 feet away to my nightstand anther 10 feet away. not sure how they could bring this product to market. certainly not sure how they can sell it for $200!!! I'm also not sure who these people are or how much they are paid to say it has outstanding range. i promise you it does not. if you buy this you will be disappointed. to be very clear, my computer, mid grade toshiba laptop, is two weeks old, essentially a brand new ac computer paired to a brand new ac router....no signal. my cell, samsung galaxy s4, also gets no signal from this router in the bedroom. like i said our old router provided by charter gave us 4 to 5 bars anywhere in the apartment. i sincerely hope this review saves someone time, hassle, frustration, and money.

Overall this is a good wireless access point product. It does NOT work as a router with a cable modem/router combo like mot people have today. At least this way I get full connectivity on the local LAN and wireless LAN of ALL my devices. I like the USB printer sharing (but wish I did not have to install an app to use it on each computer; also can't use it from Apple phones and iPads). Haven't used it yet, but does offer USB storage option for backups and general file movement. The AC 5GHz sometimes drops out. I can tell because my iPhone switches automatically to the wifi from my cable router when this happens. This is very annoying but not very frequent occurrence (about once every 2-3 days). I had a TP-link before this unit that dropped out completely every day. So this is not too bad. Seems like every unit I have tried and read reviews about has this dropout issue. My Raspberry Pi NAS storage system drops out maybe once a year (whenever there's a power brownout). Don't understand why it's so hard to design one of these expensive boxes to be 99.999 % reliable (I'm an electronic engineer).

Let me be clear, I am medium tech savvy and a not unintelligent woman in my early 50's. I had an N-600 for about 5 years and started having problems with daily reboots, interrupted streaming, lost connections, especially with some of our smart phones. Devices include 2 tower PC's, several laptops and tablets, 2 smart TV's and 5 smartphones. After reading many reviews, I upgraded to the AC1900. Haven't dropped a connection since. I have a traditional 2 story home with basement (3 levels) and coverage is great. I don't have gamers in my house but we do stream a lot on Netflix and Amazon Prime, etc. Very happy. I would give it 5 stars except I was not able to complete the initial installation via WiFi as promised. I had to cable connect to the router for initial installation. This meant hauling my PC to the basement where the cable modem and router are located. Also, I had to allow the AC1900 assume the network name we had with the N-600 or it wouldn't connect. Some one more savvy may figure out a work around but I could not. However, once installed, I have zero complaints.

Pros: I purchased this router to replace my Netgear 3700 router, and so far I have been impressed. I liked my Netgear 3700 router but had issues with slow USB transfer rates. The fastest speeds my old Netgear performed at was around 7-10 MBps running in USB 2.0 mode. With the Night Hawk edition I've seen 28 MBps on my USB 2.0 and 61 MBs on my USB 3.0 connector. The rang is pretty good as well, my gaming consoles wireless signal strength always hovered around 60-70 percent in my apartment, now I'm getting 90-6 percent at the same location. Cons: The USB 3.0 connectors keeps dropping my external hard drives. When it works it fast, but I found myself constantly unplugging/re plugging my drives at least ounce a day using the 3.0 port. So I decided to buy WD My Cloud Ethernet external drive and just use Cat 5 instead of the USB 3.0 port. I still have one of my drives connected to the USB 2.0 port running flawless, so I hope an update can fix USB 3.0 port issues, besides USB 3.0, this is an excellent router.

My household had been surviving with a lowly N600 router for years. I didn't think the "speed" of the router was all that important because the N600 rated speed was as fast or faster than the cable speed. Wrong. There is apparently a lot more to a router than that. The old one was fine at one time, but today with multiple laptops and cell phones, probably all watching videos, the speed wasn't enough. Videos were jerky. Computers would lose connections. And the printer had to be restarted almost every time someone needed to print. It was very frustrating! I finally gave in to the family's clamor for a new router and I'm glad I did. No more connections drop. No jerky videos. Best of all, we don't have to restart the printer every time there is a Groupon to print! It always stays connected. Who knew that was possible? (The printer was previously and still is wired to the router, not wireless.) All in all, this router was a great investment for a connected household.

We had been renting a combo wireless router and modem from our local internet provider. We upgraded to a flat screen Roku TV and our rental router/modem didn't cut it anymore. It was so slow that our Roku TV didn't even work. So we bit the bullet and upgraded. I'm SO glad that we did! This big box works great for our 3500 sq foot, 2-story home. We have a WiiU, Roku tv, laptops and two smart phones often running. We have boys that, probably sooner rather than later, will get into online gaming and cruising the Internet. We wanted a router that could handle the amount of data we would be streaming with speed and efficiency. So far this router has been working without a hiccup! Easy to setup too. Only complaint one might have is this bad boy is rather large. We have it and our modem setting on a high shelf next to a fake plant in our kitchen. Works great and it's out of the way. The modem also has a low blue light that is a nice nightlight :)

I bought this router to replace a 9-year-old 300N made by Airlink101. I moved to a new house and the old router just didn't have the power to provide the signal strength we needed. Overall the R7000 is a good performer. While I don't have any AC devices to test with, throughput is solid on both the 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands. I currently have about nine devices connected, with at least two streaming either movies or music almost non-stop. Even when Netflix or Hulu is streaming to the TV, there are no glitches with browsing or streaming on any of the other devices. Fire TV doesn't like the 5Ghz band very much, but that's an issue with that device. Signal strength is excellent on 2.4Ghz everywhere, with 5Ghz being better on the same floor as the router (upstairs in my house). Some 30 feet out into the back yard, the connection isn't as stable as I would like, but I wouldn't expect any router to deliver even as far as this one does. I'm not a fan of the settings GUI. This needs work. This router is not cheap; Netgear could have done a better job with the overall logic and layout. Also. settings changes take about 90 seconds, during which the router reboots and (no surprise) all connections go down.

Chose this router as I was already invested in netgear equipment with my cable internet provider as I also had the EX7000 WiFi extender and needed to replace the cable modem with a router for Greenlight fiber connection. Was able to configure the new router after initial issues as it detected that a cable router already configured and wanted to be configured as an AP. After manually configuring the router, the EX7000 connected and worked with no issues. Have had no real issues with the router except when managing device with a browser, will sometimes get to a screen that wants to do a factory reset after entering serial number of device. Closing browser and reconnecting to router usually corrects this issue. If not, waiting 10-15 minutes before reconnecting to the admin console will correct the issue. Have noticed that firmware updates are released more frequently than I had seen on previous devices but would consider that a good thing that NetGear is keeping ahead of vulnerabilities and providing patches to correct them in a timely manner.

Purchased this router after trying the Asus - WirelessAC1900 Dual-Band Gigabit Wireless Router - Black and returning it. The Asus kept dropping the signal to both our laptops. I contacted Asus support and they weren't very helpful. They tried to blame our laptops but, one of them was brand new! I saw that the Netgear Nighthawk had a 4.7 out of 5 stars rating! Plus, it was in the top 3 for both Best Seller and Best Rated. I was going to get the cheaper 1750 model but, that one didn't say it was backwards compatible with wireless N products. The 1900 model works with wireless N products. Hooked it up and downloaded the Netgear Genie on my laptop. Set-up was a breeze. Easily allows you to create accounts for both the 2.4 and 5 GHz signals. Everything (16 items) connected to it without any trouble and kept connected!!! And, the beamforming technology gives everything an "Excellent" connection!!! Works great with all my home automation devices!

I have charter cable that gives me 60 mps speed for WiFi , I bought this router for the sole purpose of using it for online gaming which requires a constant internet connection in order to have a enjoyable gaming experience , I really though buying this elite router would be my solution, as it turns out, I have internet connection problems, So as any logical man would do I called the tech guy from the company to take a look to see what the problem was on charter's end, he ran all the tests and his laptop, tablet, and phone where all saying the WiFi should be outstanding since the modem was in perfect working order, 2 other charter tech guys said the same, So if charter is not the problem then it has to be this "new elite" router that does not give me a strong solid internet connection that I need for online gaming, also my regular online experience is also unacceptable since I have 60 mps speed I should be flying through the internment which is really not the case, I have anywhere from a 5-15 second delay reaction time for page loads...! This is my 2nd router from NetGear I would recommend to not buy their products and really look to the other router company's like linksys router models, which I will be doing myself...

This product worked great in the short term. I've had it for just over a year now and it started acting up about 3 months ago. I was trying to hold out on replacing my networking equipment because we are planning on moving so I thought the issue might be with Comcast. After a few days of fault isolation and research I know the issue to be with this router. For as much as I paid for this I would've expected it to last longer than a year. If I still had the box I would take it back for a return but as it stands its a door stop. The wireless devices will stay connected to the router but the router itself will stop pushing through data giving me a loss of internet that appears to point to the modem or provider. The Wired connections work better than the wireless connectivity but they still cut out. I would not recommend this product to anyone and would furthermore advice people to steer clear of Netgear devices until they clean up their software.

I have been a big supporter of Netgear products and have used them for many years and have always had good success with their products. Unfortunately my luck has come to an end with this router. While it has provided superior coverage from my previous Netgear product, I have to power cycle it every few weeks because it stops passing wireless traffic. Wired connections continue to work, but wireless, file sharing, and management features stop responding. I have tried various versions of software and still have problems. The Netgear forums are full of people with similar issues. I can extend the lock-up period by disabling features (such as QoS), but then you are not getting what you paid for. I guess I will be trying a different manufacturer for my next purchase. Too many people are having problems when you cruise the Netgear forums.
