Connect the router, and was unable to connect to the Internet. After a few tries, it did connect. The next day, the connection was down. So, I replaced the router. The second router would not connect. After substantial trial and error, I finally changed the MTU setting to 1300 from the default 1500. After doing some searching on the Internet, I did find that changing to 1400 would be adequate. The Internet connection is now up and running. Oddly, the configuration on the "Basic" tab of the of the router's configuration is saying that the Internet is down. Sheesh ... I hate being a beta tester for a released product!!! Particularly at the price point for this one. That being said, the router's performance on the wired segment and the wireless segment does seem to be stable and performing as expected; and my expectations are high after doing some substantial research prior to purchasing this router.. Netgear support is abysmal. I attempted to call their support number, and after a number of rings the line went blank with no message #3 attempts#, The chat service took over a half an hour waiting in queue, and when finally supposedly connecting to a representative, the chat was dropped saying that there was no representative available #three attempts#. Opened a case via e-mail support, and received a stupid response with a link to a support web page and related links that I had already researched. I've decided to keep the router for the time being as the performance, particularly on the wireless segment, it the best I've seen. I'm hoping Negear fixes the bugs in the firmware. I also suspect, at least for the short term, a lot of users are going to return this product to the point of purchase because they won't be able to connect to the internet. I also suspect that Netgear is going to get a lot of support calls on this one, and people are going to be upset with the poor support received.

    Handles AirPlay and iPad poorly

    1. I have 2 Apple Airport Expresses that drive speakers. One of them wouldn't work at all with the Netgear R7000 router. We had had some problems with it in the past, so I just thought maybe it's time was up. The other one worked ok for a few days, but then started having dropouts. Occasional at first, then every few minutes. Sometimes it would drop out for a minute or even 10 minutes, then start playing again. With the other problems (see below# I decided to swap out the new one and go back to my old Linksys router. Bingo! Both expresses work just fine straming music via AirPlay with NO dropouts. 2. One cool feature of the Netgear is that it has backup software to back up to the attached external USB 3.0 drive. Got it set up on my 3 computers and it seemed great. I could access the backed up files from my iPad or phone #with the computers off# -- great for pictures! Then I went to show a picture to my wife and hmm, it wasn't there. I got to checking and my guess is that about 10% of files #random in many directories# were not backed up! What?? Nothing special about them -- .jpg, same date range as others in the directory.... 3. Our iPads have been sluggish since we got the new router and this weekend it was worse and was really driving my wife crazy. After the swap back to the old router, bingo again, everything is snappy, wife happy. 4. Probably the #1 reason I got the Netgear over the Apple in the first place was because the Netgear has an AirPlay server built in. No need to have a computer running. While it did actually work #max 10,000 songs) with the iPad Remote app, it was clunky, and again with the Airport Express problems, was unusable for playing music. 5. Minor, but adding to the overall dissatisfaction, was on the Network map, it showed wired clients as wireless and vice versa, AND different each time. What?? 6. With various problems popping up I rebooted the router a lot. My expectation is just to have it there and forget about it. Returned it and got an Apple Airport Extreme. Have to return it tomorrow. I'll do a review on it on the Extreme page.

Alright where to begin. So I bought this to replace the one I am currently renting from my ISP. Set-up was easy. Here's where things go down hill. The Netgear Genie routerlogin.net where you control your routers settings, hasn't been right since day one. No matter what I do I cannot set priority or change device names on anything (Online Tech Support can't even figure this out and there is currently an open trouble ticket it). Connected devices is never accurate and wont display all connected devices and when it does it will display my phone as a blue ray player or have my amazon echo a higher priority as my fire tv and I cannot change it. As for the wifi signal itself things are now extremely delayed for instance voice control from my alexa used to be instant or have a very short delay, now the delay is extremely long to the point where alexa will say not responding then the component will respond. Its almost like its not able to have all my wifi components connected at once very confusing. So after dealing with this for about a week with many hard resets. Firmware is up to date and verfied to be the latest by tech support. I don't know what else to do, maybe i got a bad apple but I think I will be returnig this router

If there was not a problem with the configuration software I would have given this router a 5 star rating. After much research I decided this was the router for me to replace my combo modem/router. It was certainly more then I wanted to pay but the reviews are great. While the WiFi works GREAT all over my house connecting to the router configuration is LOUSY. I have 2 PCs connected to this router. One is hardwired to router and the other is connected wirelessly. The PC hardwired can connect to the router configuration software by using the IP address or routerlogin.net. The laptop connected wirelessly either times out or connects and the links don't work. Netgear does provide a downloadable "Genie" app but it only provides a minimum connection to the router configuration. It is apparent that this is a major issue as a search on the web gets many hits about this problem and the Netgear forum also has many threads about this issue. Either Netgear purposely refuses to fix the problem or doesn't know how to fix it. I am very disappointed that a major networking equipment vendor can't or won't resolve this issue. I have contacted their support and communicating in English is a major problem or they provide completely unusable solutions also because I think there is a disconnect when using English. I have had this router a few days but I am still hoping that Netgear will come through with an answer but if not its going back to Best Buy.

    Great router when it works

Hooked this router up last night at 6pm. Worked great! Range was excellent along with being very fast. 2pm today, the 2.4ghz network was unreachable but the 5ghz seemed fine. Figured I'd call netgear to troubleshoot vs. rebooting it (since it's a $200 router#. Took me 3 calls and over an hour for them to tell me they wanted to downgrade the firmware, and if that didn't fix it I should return it to the store. They had no interest in trying to figure out the problem at all. I asked for higher level support. They next tech was very nice but just wanted to change wireless settings. I asked if there were logs or something to look at but apparently not. She had no idea how to troubleshoot an issue. Wanted me to change the SSID and channel for the 2.4 network along with other settings all at once. No way that would help zero in on the cause. I agreed to the least likely fix of changing the SSID #no way that was the problem) but of course that reboots the router, and fixed the problem. Of course not the change, but the reboot. I knew that would clear the problem but was hoping to let netgear see the problem in action but wasn't to be. I don't think netgear has any interest in troubleshooting problems. They want to Band-Aid and move on. Very disappointing. Had high hopes for this router.

This product worked great in the short term. I've had it for just over a year now and it started acting up about 3 months ago. I was trying to hold out on replacing my networking equipment because we are planning on moving so I thought the issue might be with Comcast. After a few days of fault isolation and research I know the issue to be with this router. For as much as I paid for this I would've expected it to last longer than a year. If I still had the box I would take it back for a return but as it stands its a door stop. The wireless devices will stay connected to the router but the router itself will stop pushing through data giving me a loss of internet that appears to point to the modem or provider. The Wired connections work better than the wireless connectivity but they still cut out. I would not recommend this product to anyone and would furthermore advice people to steer clear of Netgear devices until they clean up their software.

I bought one, had it up and running in an hour. Worked great...for 6 or 7 days, then NOTHING. Exchanged for another, same challenge. Worked with NG on the phone for full hours...but basically trying the same thing over and over expecting different results. I had another router to try (an older NG) and it still worked, so I know it wasn't the modem. Basically, after the 2 hours of advanced tech support, they said to take back the 2nd and get a 3rd. I decided that based on the short free phone support, that I would not trust buying another. There are basically three high end options at Best Buy, all at the $200 pricepoint. One is slightly more than the other two. One, the NG, has the worst warranty. And, based on my experience, not so good. The good was the QOS settings to prioritize the Netflix traffic and handle a large number of devices in the house was perfect...exactly what I need to solve some network issues. Turns out my old router had it...but it was not as intuitive to set up as it was a new feature then. So, for the time being, I am sticking with the older router until these new high end routers come down a bit.

They happen. All devices are not perfect. Some work better than others. I know plenty of people who use a night hawk router. They boast about signal and speed, which I found was true. My speed for download hit a new high using this router on Ethernet and wifi, probably 15 to 20 percent boost... But the signal strength for me kinda of sucked. 1 room over with only one wall between the router and my tv and the signal was 1 bar most of the time. Thus I think I got a bad one. My old router was full most of the time. I returned this one and just went back to my old router., I only purchased this router because it supports old legacy wifi security, WEP. I had to hack it for my wireless security course. Thank GOD for best buys return policy.

Overall everything that i love about netgear products are easy to setup, features, and a quality product. This one falls a little short. The latest firmware update will fix 5g issues, but you must do a factory default reset after firmware update is complete. Next adjust your settings back to your liking. Will work but has not fixed range in 5g, you can give yourself a little more running room by adjusting channel, but nowhere close to range of 2.5g. Could have done a little more r & d before product release. Which so far from what I'm reading, they have done with the Nighthawk x6, just still to expensive for my blood. I'll wait until it's about $150 before I bite though, $299, it aint a computer or phone now, add a touch screen with os and i'll pay the $299, but until then i can be patient this time, i think the nighthawk was realeased a little too early and got to many good reviews before problems took hold.

Works Well as a Router - but no parental controls

This router works well as a router - but one of the main reasons we bought it was it's ability to provide parental controls. It appears that this router used to have it's own parental controls builtin - but they have since outsourced that functionality to Circle by Disney. (We have had the Circle by Disney stand alone device in a previous location so we are familiar with it and like it). But this router will not (no matter how many times I have tried over multiple days) connect to the Circle by Disney set up site. So while the router works well as a basic router - the main reason I bought it this one was for the parental controls which does not work. So if you are looking for a router with parental controls steer clear of this one.

The coverage of the wireless access is excellent and the built in options are really nice. The major down side to this router though is that I have to reboot the device regularly because the routing tends to get screwed up. I'll have about 20 devices all working fine and then certain ones will stop talking to other devices on the network or some of them will stop picking up the Internet. I found that simply rebooting the router gets everything playing nice again. The only consistent problem is the ability to route properly between devices connected via 2.4GHz vs. 5GHz. I found that I need to have the devices on the same band if they need to talk to each other (i.e. my iPad and my Chromecast). I keep hoping for an update from NETGEAR to address these dependability issues... but oddly the last update seems to have done more damage than good.

Great for a few months until 5Ghz died

This is a router that replaced my R6300. Speeds, specs and features are top notch. I purchased this in October 2014 and was performing as advertised. All my wireless (at least 10) and wired devices were able to connect and get fast internet and intranet connectivity. My wired network consists of Cat6 cables throughout my home. The issue I have with this router is that the 5Ghz band died. The router GUI indicates that it's on but nothing can connect to it. My 802.11 n,ac devices can't even detect it. Currently, the 2G band works, but my speeds definitely have slowed considerably. I've always been a supporter of Netgear routers, owning 6 others, but this one may finally make me switch to something else. For the money, it's great when it works as it should, but after 8 months and degraded performance, I can't recommend it.

My five year old 3700 vintage netgear router went south, and needed to be replaced. Since I was running a Netgear NAS, it seemed like an updated Netgear router was the way to go. However, the new router exhibited the same problems as the old router. Ah, obviously not a router problem, so I wasted the next 36 hours trying to diagnose the problem elsewhere. I contacted Netgear Support, the Community Forum, etc. to no avail. Finally, I replaced the Netgear router with a Linksys router. Problem went away. I have had similar problems with other Netgear products. Yes, the Netgear model has nice lights on the front, and more apparent features in the software. But, the Linksys router worked without the hassles.

This is more of a review about Bestbuy than Netgear. I talked with Bestbuy regarding the need for a DSL modem router. He suggested this router and told me it was a modem router that works with both DSL & cable. NOT TRUE, I contacted Netgear and they said this was only a router (R7000) . The (D7000) was the DSL modem router. It is very confusing because unless you verify these model numbers the rest of the information is nearly identical. The Bestbuy person should have known this! So glad I didn't blindly follow his advice. Buyer beware!

Router Works good but is a headache to set up the wifi connections, for start every mobile device you want to connect wifi has to have installed an app and follow time consuming instructions, but once you leave the place and go back, you have to start again to set up installation!!. Wifi printers doesn't connect unless they're wired connected and setting up never completes! besides is impossible to have so long cables to connect several printers in different rooms. A pc desktop I tried to connect via ethernet, the wizard installation never opened, the result: no internet connection!! A very complicated set up, I'm going to return it

I purchased this dual band router because I wanted to use the 5G technology for my business. I work from home and have about 12 different personal use devices using the Internet at any given moment, so having the faster speed band was going to be a useful tool for me. I had planned to dedicate the faster band to my business needs and keep the home usage on the slower band. The 5G band showed up one time and I connected my laptop to it, but it hasn't been available automatically since that one time. If I have to trouble shoot it every time I need to work, it's not a useful tool, and I spent extra money buying the dual band router for nothing. So that's why I'm disappointed with my purchase.

    Good Router When It Works

I purchased this router about a year ago to give broader coverage throughout my home. It did increase the coverage but not significantly. However, after about 6 months, the 2.4Ghz channel no longer provides internet access. Devices can connect but internet is not available. This has not been an issue with the 5Ghz channel. So all my devices then have to share the 5Ghz channel or I have to reboot the router. It will typically work for a couple hours then the problem appears again. This is disappointing considering the NETGEAR brand in this space and the very high cost of this router. I've decided to retire it and have purchased Google WiFi instead to replace it.

This is my second router I bought to give to my family. So I set it up and tested it at my home and configured everything to make it is working. Now I gave it to my family in the other house it is stopped working and it is not even connecting to the host website so I can reconfigure. Very disappointed. I used to own Apple Routers from the very long time and they were just sooooooooo easy to use and they worked like a charm. I could give that product to anyone and it would just work. Same had been given an apple router earlier again configured by me and they all just worked. I hope Netgear would learn some lessons from Apple.

I purchased this router as an upgrade to my Asus RT-AC68U. When i did router research, It seemed like this router was always a contender. I'm disappointed to say that I took it back and exchanged it for an Asus RT-AC87U. The web interface and desktop software is very disappointing and limited in comparison to other routers on the market. If your a needing a family router that's a set and forget thing, it does have parental control features that were updated dynamically, and I recommend this to you. If your a nerd doing your research, then you already know that open sourced software installation is key.

I am told Netgear makes great products, but my router has been nothing but problems for me. Tried multiple times to reset and try different firmware and settings but stays the same. Issue is router recieves ~400mbps but it limits what devices get, even if only one device on the router. Upload is constant but download is always limited regardless of what I do. Previous routers didn't do that. Maybe just this model or just this router, but not a fan.
