    Horrible Router

The same as other recent 1 star reviews for the R7000P (ac2300). The good: Easy setup and good wi-if range in a 2,000 sf home. The bad: horribly slow wi-if speed, LAN (direct wired) speed, updated firmware is broken and support is atrocious. I have a 400 Mbps system and was getting 30 Mbps on the 2.4 side, 52 Mbps on the 5 gig side and a best 118 Mbps hardwired. When I installed the system it said no new firmware. Contacted support they said there was an updated firmware and I installed it with their guidance. After the update the WiFi and LAN connection slowed down. Was able to speed up the WiFi to 35 on 2.4 and 60 on 5 gig but was unable to do anything for LAN. Just to get this little bit of speed I had to talk to 4 different people on different days. I had to call back after “monitoring” the changes for 12 hours. Of the 4 people I spoke with I could only clearly understand 1. As long as it takes to get to talk with someone you would think they would let you talk with a qualified person and get the problem(s) fixed then and not call back several times. I purchased this router to replace my old Netgear n900 WNDR4500 that I’ve had 8-10 years. The n900 worked great until the wi-if strength started going down and dropping occasionally. I get between 330 - 410 Mbps on a 400 Mbps system with the old router. From the week worth of research I did on all of the Nighthawk routers all of the recent bad reviews and there are a bunch, they all say the same. In short stay away from the Nighthawk systems.

    The worst of the worst

Bought this product of from a local store, and followed instructions to set it up. Everything seemed fine until I started gaming. This router crashed (rebooted) twice mid game. And this has the longest boot time of any router that I have seen. Total of 10 devices connected but that includes my smart light switches and my iPhone, none of which was using bandwidth. Then later at night, all wireless went down. The reliability of this router is terrible! I had more problems with this router in the first 4 hours than I did with my previous router in 4 years. I don't even know how Netgear passed this firmware/router combo. It looks great, but doesn't do its job. Dual core processor? Feels like it's running MS-DOS on a 2MHz processor... Definitely stay away!

    Look At Another Brand

I purchased this router on 6/5 and on 6/7 (1 full day of use) it has become corrupted. Apparently, Netgear has a setting that will automatically update the firmware on your router, and this has caused mine to brick itself. I am an IT professional, I know how to use TFTP, I am familiar with ARM architecture, and I have even reached out on the Netgear forums. Nothing will fix this other than a replacement. I've never known of a product to update firmware automatically before. Look for another brand, especially if you are tech savvy. I've tried the reset, 30-30-30, TFTP, simple ping... Nothing will talk to this router. Please avoid at all costs.

Seemed to work well for about 5 months, and then it would start to drop wifi and wired signal randomly. Tried updating to the latest firmware and it did not fix the problem. Constantly have to reset it just to have it work for 10 minutes and drop connection again. I'd recommend staying away from this router and get a Linksys.

Setup is terrible and the troubleshooting and customer service at NETGEAR is terrible. They send you to YouTube videos that tell you to plug it in and connect to app. Every single trouble shooting video. My 4th nighthawk router because 2 were faulty out of the box and needed to be exchanged.

The R7000p was to replace an R7000 unit I bought many years ago. I tried to setup the first one and the instructions were pretty sparse with details. What should have been easy was not. I've got extensive background on setting up networking equipment before. I finally got some headway, but I couldn't even access the routers internal software. The unit kept dropping signal. I figured something was defective with the unit. I took it back and exchanged it. I ran into the same issues with the second unit. I also spent 45 minutes with Netgear Tech Support and still couldn't get it to work. This time I couldn't access the internal software to configure, I couldn't get any access. This was a very long frustrating process with two units that didn't work. I bought Linksys. That router was up and running in no time.

fast when it's on, but drops connections often.

This is my 2nd Netgear in a few weeks both had the same dropping connection problem. I have 200mbps cable Spectrum and when it drops it drops on MacBook Pro the most and then Android (while streaming music) and PC. NetGear support is in the Philippines which would be fine if they payed for better companies there (I have In-laws there). I am not pleased with the quality of the support at all. Long hold times and they blamed my ISP. Not sure what the alternative is. I do like the features of the router and online management software. just unsure of reliability. wish they had a 2yr warranty like Motorola or Asus.

Failed in less than 24 hours

I was looking forward to having the latest router. It worked over night, but then only the amber power light was on, with the unit resetting at times. I contacted NetGear, who was helpful. I took the device back to Best Buy knowing they didn't have another in stock. But another store did. It was my plan to get a refund then go to the other store. The Best Buy agent showed me a couple of possible replacements I might consider. The Linksys EA7500 looked like it would work for my needs and was out more than a year. So I decided to, instead of messing around with going out of my way to get another NetGear unit, to just get the Linksys (especially since my network was down). I didn't want to chance that it would also fail since it was such a new model. Also, the Linksys was $50 less than the NetGear. I've only had the Linksys 4 days, but it is still working well.

WiFi signal goes from good to weak and disconnects from devices almost every day. Parental controls are completely useless as the router does'nt filter anything.

    Wordt router

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased this router to upgrade my 11 year old router. Out of all the netgear routers I've owned, this one has been the worst ever. I get Random throttles of my download due to the router. I bypassed the router to the modem and the download is fine. I've reset the router twice, resetting the firmware. Nothing fixes the issue. I went back to using an old router that works ok. When I get a new router I will not be buying a netgear product again ever. Do not purchase this router if you need to have your download be consistent.

got his one hoping it would be smooth and easy to use. NOPE !!! super bad, the app that connects to it never worked, really bad. the router itself always had issues. drop connections, bad reliability. even the tech line for netgear could never get it right. then after a few months, it died on me. so over all very bad. would not buy again and after dealing with netgear i will never buy another netgear.

If you want a router that sets up a home network that you need to print through, don't buy this router. My printer can connect to the network but the router will not share to the network so your computers can see it. No help in customer support, no help in down loads. No live chat line to help you through. You have work your way through all the problems to try a find a fix yourself. This will be returned.

    Terrible supporr

Did not work out of the box. After troubleshooting and factory resets I checked with Netgear support. 2 hours of hold and no response. When I called back they said due to covid they had long wait times. It has been a year, the excuse is getting old. There was no way to put me through to someone other than get back in line for another 2+ hours.

    An unreliable router

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The primary issue with this router is the 5Ghz band being active but not allowing devices to connect. The other problem is that when I need to power cycle the router due to a modem issue, I have to factory reset the router (a simple power cycle should be enough to work). This router is too expensive to be so problematic.

Had the same issue on 2 separate units. Works for a few days, getting the full 300Mbps speed we pay for. Then out of the blue will drop to 20Mbps download speeds... Firmware is corrupted, and even has this problem on very old Firmware. Very disappointing. No more Netgear for me!
