Steady signal and picks up our ultra speed with 500 plus mbps on the wi-fi download speed. Has great range as well. Very easy to setup with the Nighthawk app. Great upgrade from our last Netgear router that lasted us fourteen years.

    Good Router for the price

I'll start with what I feel is good about the router. Superficially is looks good and compared to the RAX80 I feel like the indicator lights are in a better place to be seen. The auto channel selection picked a good spot where there was less interference from my neighbors and I've had issues with other routers in the past where this was a problem. Netgear's Readyshare is nice and I was able to plug in my hard drive without issue and it was immediately available. The speeds I tested were correct in 5 Ghz band but was about 2/3s the speed in the 2.4Ghz band. Without some additional research I'm not sure if that is normal or not. The guest network works and was easy to set up and the Wi-Fi password can be shared with a text (or other chat app) or QR code. The website is chock full of settings like OpenVPN, port forwarding, and the aforementioned Ready share settings. The signal strength is very good, a little better than the Google mesh i also have. Overall the good bits are good but here's some issues I find, especially when comparing it to the Google mesh network I have. The nighthawk app needs some work compared to something like Google's WiFi app. I had issues getting speed test to work and even connecting at the beginning seemed like a problem trying to disconnect from an old nighthawk that was set up. The app lacks port forwarding and doesn't feel as 'clean' as I would hope. It's hard to qualify the feeling but I prefer the flow of the Google app. The router doesn't do 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz on the same SSID which would be nice given the Google mesh I have does that. It has NetgearXX and NetgearXX-5g. Aside from these issues in my home I think if you are in the market for something with a lot of customization this could be the product for you. If you need basic stuff without a lot of advanced customization then maybe something else works, unless this is in your price point then you can just ignore the advanced options. The device doesn't do a mesh (that's Orbi) so my home floorplan works against it. Hopefully Netgear looks into the Nighthawk app and does some upgrading there and I think the overall experience would improve. I was provided this router by Netgear as part of the First Look Review Program but all positives and criticisms are my own.

    Sudden Death Syndrome

First off I’m a big Netgear fan and am currently usIng a Netgear Orbi system which has been great from the get-go. Very fast, great coverage, no reboots, it just works. The AX4 on the other hand is a complete dog. Setup was difficult at best, very buggy, wouldn’t connect to internet or complete setup without multiple tries to finally finish. When I finally got it up and running, made a few minor changes and updated the firmware it worked OK but did experience wild inconsistency in signal strength all over and very poor range. I did test it with a Samsung S10 which does have an AX WiFi modem and while it was very fast in the same room as the router if you moved more than 20 ft. away the signal would drop off noticeably. AC clients were also slow and unreliable. Then the AX4 died after 12 hours. No led lights, won’t reset, won’t power on at all. It’s going back today and until Netgear gets it together with this router I would advise to stay far away from any purchase.

Easy to setup - after some boot time - and FW upgrade - show good signal all around my house (better than my old router which had more antennas and still failed ) . Also great to see that my new Galaxy s10 show Wifi 6 symbol when connect in my network. all the other routers with 11ax were more than 300$ - so I think it's a good deal.

I received this product as part of Netgear's First Look Review Program. As such, I was tasked with testing this product and giving my unbiased review. The router I am reviewing is actually a replacement. The first unit that I received gave me issues and so I surmised that this may have just been a bad unit. It turns out that wasn't the case. Here are my pros and cons with this particular router. Pros: 1. The router has a very sleek design and would look fine in almost any area of the house. 2. The intial setup of the router was super simple. I was able to get all of the basic settings that I wanted within 5 minutes or less after bootup. 3. The speeds of this router are pretty phenomenal. I wasn't able to test the wifi 6 ability as I do not have a wifi 6 capable device. With that said, I received the following speeds. When autodetecting internet speed via the Qos page in setup, my baseline speed was around 300 UP and 275 DOWN. When wired directly to the router, I received an average speed of 285 UP and 233 DOWN. When I connected wirelessly right next to the router, I had sustained speeds of 289 UP and 224 DOWN. This was on the 5 gHz band. When I moved to the opposite side of our house, I had sustained speeds of 147 UP and 158 DOWN. This was also on the 5 gHz band as I had beamforming enabled. I was fine with this drop in speed as we have a 2 story house and the signal had to go through 1 floor and a radiant barrier. Overall, I am very pleased with the wired/wireless speeds of this router. Now for the not so good parts of the router. Cons: 1. During bootup, the power LED will blink red. If you have never seen this before and look into the troubleshooting manual, this could indicate firmware corruption. This was confusing until I realized that this was just how the router started up. Netgear may want to change the color/action of this LED to something that seems less critical. 2. The boot time is extremely slow on this router. From a completely cold boot, the startup time is 3-3.5 minutes while a typical reboot through the router will take 3.5-4 minutes. This led to the scenario in above where I thought the firmware was corrupt. 3. The browser interface seems very simplistic as compared to previous versions on other routers. It appears that some functionality has been omitted in order to make setup easier for newer users. 4. There is no option to throttle the speeds on the guest network. To be fair, I don't believe this option exists on any other consumer grade Netgear router either. Perhaps this is a setting that Netgear could implement in the future. 5. If you change a setting in the firmware, the update (save) of that option is very slow. Other Netgear routers that I use seem to be able to accomplish these tasks in a fraction of the time that this router takes. 6. Qos is very limited. I could not find an option to select particular devices and assign an amount of bandwidth to them. This is an option that DOES exist in DumaOS on the Netgear XR500 router. 7. After I intially setup the router, my devices could see the SSID and connect to it, but the router would not assign an IP address to them. After a reboot, the router started functioning as normal. This is a small inconvenience but it still should have worked properly right away. 8. If you are using this device as an access point (for whatever reason) or a secondary router and are connected to another Netgear router, the use of the routerlogin.net website becomes very useless. Sometimes it'll connect to the access point/secondary router, while other times it'll connect to the primary router. It would be nice to be able to change the device URL for each individual Netgear device. Otherwise, you'll still have to rely on the IP address of the devices to connect properly. Overall, I did not have a pleasant experience with this router. Perhaps I am spoiled with the XR500; however, after technically testing 2 of these devices, my experience did not improve. For this price point, I've been recommending the Netgear Nighthawk AC2300. That has been a solid router and I've received zero complaints from my recommendation.

    Easy transition

We have a small office and the transition from a older router and it was amazingly seamless. We don't have an IT staff so the responsibility for setup fell on me and believe me, I'm no technology guru. Fortunately, the app makes setup a breeze. We had a few things hard wired into the previous router so it was quick thing to unplug from old and replug into new. Interestingly, the Quick Start Guide really didnt provide any setup instructions outside of "download the app". No hiccups during setup and everyone was able to see and connect to the new wifi. I did not necessarily notice a huge speed boost but that may be attributable to our mediocre ISP. The signal was nice and strong. I was concerned about the change over and it went off without a hitch. Overall a very seamless experience. I received the RAX40 from NETGEAR as part of a review and test program.

Setup wasn't flawless and it's way too easy to accidentally turn off the WiFi if you hit the button on the top of the router after connecting devices to it. Once setup is complete and it is running, though, the router is extremely responsive and we get much better connections and faster speeds on Pixel 3, iPhone, Surface Book 2, iPad and other devices.

    Extremely Easy Setup, Connection Challenges

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I found the setup using the app to be very simple. Everything worked flawlessly and I was up and running in minutes. So far so good. Then I started connecting all the devices in my house to the new wifi (MacBook Pro, iPad, kids iPhone 6 and Galaxy S7. No problems at all until I tried to connect my wife's HP Pavilion laptop running Windows 10. The laptop unable to see the SSID. Spent hours researching, tweaking settings, rebooting router and modem with no luck. Connecting the laptop via network cable directly to the router worked just fine, but no matter what I tried, the SSID did not appear when searching for a wifi. Very frustrating because older phones and other laptops did not have this problem. Finally I realized that had not updated the router firmware. As soon as I did so, problem solved. So just a warning to update the firmware right away and save yourself a headache.

First off I love the app , downloaded to phone and all set. I have a lot of wireless devices and it found them all. Have pushed it hard for a few days now. We have wireless TV , cameras , over 15 wireless devices in our house. We are up and running fast. Kids are streaming and playing PUBG and my TV didn't skip a beat. Works good really have enjoyed the nighthawk product line. The price is right , not a ton of money for a fast router to run all the devices in your house.

Just upgraded our internet to gigabit, which is awesome, but our old wifi router wasn't cutting it anymore. We had numerous deadspots in our small house. This Nighthawk RAX40 is fast and has the range we need for all our quickly accumulating wifi devices. Highly recommended to anyone looking for something new. Looking forward to more Wifi6 devices so that we can really feel the speed. We also play a bunch of games, which were laggy before on the wifi, they are working much better now. Top notch!

After dealing with some buggy behavior from both my Xfinity router and a Linksys model, I caved and picked up the RAX40. I plugged it in, it worked immediately, has stronger speeds and has been perfectly reliable so far. Can't ask for more than that.

I've only had this router for about a week but so far it's great. I really like the Nighthawk app. It makes set up really easy, makes monitoring your network easy (like who's connected and what your speeds are). The range seems great too, I get a pretty decent signal even out in my backyard.

    Limited Security Features

I am happy with the speed and range, it definitely outperforms my old N600 router but the block sites feature does not work at all, even if it did it does not allow you to block a site for only a specific ip address, this is very disappointing. Also the Nighthawk Android App has very limited functionality, it should be able to do everything the web interface can, otherwise what's the point? If they release an updated firmware to fix the security issues I'll be happy and update my review.

The router was super easy to set up and get going. I love the app and the ease of use as well as the various features. I previously was using an Airport/Time Capsule. I can still use the time capsule but the wifi signal strength was lacking. This router easily handles two xbox gaming systems, streaming movies and video conferencing all at the same time. Glad we made the purchase and didn't start creating holes in our walls to make a wired system.

Great entry router into Wifi 6

This router has improved my network quality far from the isp-provided router. Download speeds are much more consistent and the wifi no longer drops out. Even though there are limited devices for the new Wifi 6 protocol, I bought this for a little bit of future-proofing. The only thing I would change on this router is the ability to set the 2.4 and 5 ghz network into 1 SSID instead of 2.

Been using NETGEAR Routers for as long as I have had the internet. In fact I have never used any other brand. NETGEAR is always dependable and delivers speeds as advertised. The RAX40 really blew me away when I did a speed test. I actually was .76 Mbps download faster than the max my ISP gives me. I highly recommend.

Using this as the router upstairs and and a R7000 as an AP downstairs. This is all hard wired with a netgear 4 port switch and even though there is no smart connect I have managed to combine both upstairs and down 5g and 2.4g all into one ssid and password. So far pretty fast and my iPhone runs fast on the AX and I get same speeds as hard wired on Speedtest.
