I’ve been rolling with Netgear Nighthawk since 2011. I only recommend this product. I will say that this is fire product. Handles all my household needs. I went in to do some configuration on my liking for my other products. I also have the 3.1 docsis modem with gigabit internet. If you want smooth internet on up to 40 devices work from home….. Great router, but 6GHz connection must be nearby

I primarily needed 6GHz for VR and gaming. Owned for 3 months now. The software and support on the router is great. But, the 6GHz band will drop streaming connections often after 3 walls within 25ft of the device, so I can only use 6GHz when I'm in the living room with a clear line of sight to the router for Meta Quest 3 Airlink to my PC and iPhone. When I get a NAS or media server set up, the 2.5G port will be nice. I could be using 6GHz incorrectly, since the router is placed below the living room TV, but I'll have to get another stand if I want to try it out with no obstruction from furniture.

Decent router with good speeds. My home has a handful of Homekit devices and I assumed all routers did by now and sadly, this one doesn't. This replaced a failing Ubiquiti Alien router so I'll probably be getting another one of those to replace this.

I just replaced my old router with this one and I saw a huge difference. The speed is great depending on your internet provider. I also really like the app that allows me to easily control the router including resetting it remotely or changing the password to my networks easily. It also comes with a trial of Network security which I’m considering signing up for because it’s been so useful. All in all, great router and no downsides so far.

Bought it so my new iMac could use its 6E wi-fi. Since then I’ve learned about its beam forming technology; it’s multiple antennas and radios. I only have about 1500sqft to cover , so I can’t attest to coverage distance. Great price. If you want better than this router the price goes up quickly.

A Capable, Speedy Router for Today and Tomorrow

The latest winged design hides six antennae inside this Netgear Nighthawk AXE7800 router model RAXE300-100NAS featuring the current standard in tri-band Wi-Fi technology. A 6 GHz band allows the greatest speed and capacity and reduces data loads on the other two bands. If a new router is in the cards, Wi-Fi 6E readies you for the future.
Compatible with Wi-Fi 6E devices now and into the future, the technology is capable of speeds up to 7.8 Gbps for faster gaming, streaming and lag-free AR/VR gaming, not to mention smoother video calls, all, potentially at the same time. Handle up to eight super-busy Wi-Fi streams at once. And it’s ready for 8K streaming.
With a 2.5 Gbps or a pair of Gigabit LAN ports that may both be used to get 2 Gbps aggregate speed, there should be no stopping the action. Depending upon your setup, there may still be four Ethernet ports available to hard-wiring devices to the router.
Add a USB 3.0 Type-C port for serving up content or backup and the package is hard to beat with coverage up to 2,500 sq. ft.
The downloadable Nighthawk app eases setup. Follow the prompts, then manage the network from anywhere in the world using available Wi-Fi.
A subscription-based Netgear Armor cybersecurity package with smart parental controls is also available.
**WHAT’S IN THE BOX**
• Netgear Nighthawk AXE7800
• Power supply
• Ethernet cable
• Documentation
**THE SETUP**
One of the easier routers to set up, load and launch the smartphone app. Re-boot the modem. Connect the AXE7800, then follow the prompts in the app through to completion. Use the network password provided on a sticker or change to whatever you wish The same goes for the network name. I set the router to get and apply updates as they become available from Netgear.
Some users may wish to do as I am accustomed to doing. That is, to log into the router through a web interface and to perform administration through that method. This router is designed for users who want to do everything through the mobile app, which seems to be a trend at this end of the business. Make everything easy for non-technical consumers and not so easy for those of us with technical know-how and experience. This is not a criticism, but, rather, an observation.
A five TB drive was connected to the USB-C 3.0 port for serving up our music and video library to any connected device.
Setup using an app is commonplace today and so convenient.
Set up and ready, it’s time to . . .
**PUT IT TO THE TEST**
How simple is this! Smooth sailing. We have only a few Wi-Fi 6, including Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra phones and a Google Pixel 6a. There is no doubt that more devices are on the way by year’s end, and that’s exciting.
A word about speed. ALL speed claims of this or ANY router are theoretical maximums. What the user experiences is dependent upon more than one factor. First, what is the speed of the ISP? If yours is only 100 mbps, then you will not go any faster than that. If with your use there are no lags, then there is nothing to complain about. Second, what devices are in use and how many? The use of Wi-Fi 6E is dependent upon whether or not the user has any of these. If there are none, then this is a non-starter and will have to wait until the user has mobile phones, for example, in order to benefit from this technology.
And what about range? What YOU may experience is dependent upon such things as the construction of your house or apartment, if the router is centrally located and the signals are without obstacles other than walls. Ideally, any router should be placed in the clear and near the top of the wall.
Not tested was the extra-cost Armor Security.
No slowdowns were detected regardless of how many data-sucking devices were simultaneously sucking data. Gaming was smooth sailing. Our ISP provides 400 mbps down and 20 mbps upstream.
As to range, in this 1400 square foot residence, there is plenty of Wi-Fi signal to the extremities of the house, to the back edge of the property and to the street in front. I’d say this is a win.
**CONCLUSION**
More for what will be than what is, this Netgear Nighthawk router works flawlessly NOW. I noticed no glitches when using the Wi-Fi 6E phones and will expect outstanding performance as Wi-Fi 6E devices are added.
**WARRANTY**
Includes manufacturer’s one year parts & labor warranty.

Overall a solid router with up to date features and yes, it looks like an imperial shuttle. The sides do fold down so if you have a tight space, it can still fit in it, but your coverage may not be as good. Setup was not hard, you can use the app or go directly to the router’s GUI. The app setup through the Nighthawk app was not hard, just follow the directions. I then did a setup through the router GUI and it was also easy to setup. You can connect the Nighthawk app to the router after a router setup simply. Typical Netgear process. I had this replace an old Netgear R7800 and was a big leap in performance. Physically, besides the sides it also has holes for wall mounting. It has one USB-C port for file sharing, and six LAN ports. The LAN ports are four regular 1GB ports for your network with two available for .ad port aggregation. The other two LAN ports have dual duty. One is a regular 1GB WAN/LAN port, and the other a 1-2.5GB WAN/LAN port. Which ever one is not a WAN port becomes a regular LAN port for your network. So, this can accept up to 2.5GB WAN connections from your ISP if you have the speed, or be a multi-gig port for your network. There are lights for all the ports and wifi on the router. Due to the shape of the device looking from the front or back you can’t see the lights on the other side. If wall mounted, you can see all of the lights at once. There is a lip on the bottom under the RJ45 ports which can make it a little hard to remove large plugs. Make sure you check for firmware updates as soon as it’s hooked up.
The app is useful for an overall overview of your network from anywhere. I used the advance tab in the GUI to setup the router the way I want. I have 60+ devices on my network between wired and wireless and the router handled it all with no issues. I set my server up with aggregation and the .ad worked fine. I use the 1GB WAN port and the 2.5GB became a LAN port. All wired connections had no issues. For wireless, it handled 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6E all at once with no issues for 20+ devices. Specifications say 40-70 wireless devices should be okay. I just put in my old wifi settings, and a new one for 6E, and all my wireless devices were picked up with no issues. I connected a USB-C 3.2 drive and setup file sharing. As with most routers, upload was very slow, sustained 10MB/s after a 50MB/s start for a few seconds. Downloads are as fast expected on a network. So, load your files from a computer before connecting the drive to the router. Mapping the drive as a network drive was easy as the setup page gives you the location and you can just copy and paste it into the Network drive setup. UPnP worked fine for my network.
You can see of the devices currently connected to the router and allow/block, or assign them IP reservations if in DHCP. Whether directly to the router, or thorough some AP’s the router saw everything on the network and assigned IPs with no issues. On the Nighthawk app it remembers anything ever connected, but the router only shows what is currently connected, so the numbers reporter under Home on the app and attached devices on the router can be different. The device has QoS, but you can’t see how it works and manually set priorities. It has a Traffic Meter to either see your traffic, or set limits to not go over. You can also setup the device as a Router, AP, or Bridge.
I do have a Wi-Fi 6E laptop and tested it out. Right next to the router I got a 1.4GB connection and 90MB/s throughput. One floor up I lost 1/3 indicated connection speed and throughout was 60MB/s. On the top floor, 2 floors away, I lost 2/3 the connection indicated and throughput was 33MB/s. 5GHz was a better option as you get further away. But, in close proximity to the router, 6E is slightly below 1GB ethernet for throughput. 90MB/s on 6E vs 115-120MB/s on ethernet.
There are some add-ons for the device, Parental controls, and Armor Security. Both have 30 day test periods and don’t require a credit card to be entered for the trail periods. Both have to be activated from the app. Although you can see the status, enabled or not, in the router GUI, all of the controls and reports are in the app. Armor scans your network for vulnerabilities. It was hit or miss for me. It found all my devices, and at one point reported 837 issues. It was three devices with each with over 250 issues. Every time it scanned, it reported an issue again and just kept piling them up instead of removing duplicates. So, overall there were not many issues, 6 total, 2 per device. When someone mistyped a website address the program blocked access as a malware site and reported it in the app. So, it is working. It’s $100 a year, but intro price is $40 if you want it. As both programs require you to allow installation, and there is no cost for a 30 day trail it’s not bloatware, you can just ignore it. For protection it also pushes Bitdefender to protect devices that can run it. You’ll see a report in the app telling you about it. Although add-ons are there, there are no tricks to get you to sign up, if you don’t, none of the router abilities are lost.
This is router is only a little but less capable than it’s more expensive version the RAXE500 which is $200 more. You don’t lose much and get some newer options. The router is solid and does everything from multi-gig LAN/WAN to the latest Wi-Fi 6E with no issues. Setup is simple and through the router GUI can control almost all functions of the router. Although there are additional pay subscription options, you don’t have to use them, it’s clear what is pay and not, so no tricks. More functions are being pushed to the app, but you can still do everything through the router GUI. Remote management is done through the app now. Overall, the RAXE-300 is another solid router from Netgear.

I’m not super techy but this thing seems to be EXTREMELY fast. I pay for 1 gig speeds and consistently her 905+ upload and download speeds. One time my upload speed was way higher than my download but I’m sure that was my I termed provider. Setup was super easy with that app. I think it may have took 5 minutes to get everything going. It easily covers my whole house and a good bit of my yard. Unfortunately I don’t have any devices or anything that recognizes the 6G but at least I won’t have to upgrade my router later! Love the look of it (think Star Wars!); makes you not want to hide it as much as others. Also love it’s a router/modem in one. Netgear has always worked exceptionally well for me.

We started having intermittent issues with our old internet set up (NETGEAR modem and a couple of ASUS routers linked into an aimesh, it was at least 7 years old) and decided to replace everything with newer netgear equipment including new modem and router. Internet speed immediately went up for 30% upon setting everything up, setup was very easy and intuitive as well as using an app. So far so good and we hope it stays that way for a long time

Excellent Performance But Lacking In Some Areas

The Netgear AXE7800 (RAXE300) Tri-Band Wi-Fi Router is a very solid router, but it should be given its price point. While not the most expensive home router you can buy, it's certainly nearing the upper tier when it comes to suggested retail price. Whether the RAXE300 is worth it or not is very dependent on who is purchasing it. It offers some nice features, and performance is very good -- even excellent at times, particularly over its 5 Ghz frequency though it fell short of what was advertised. Netgear states up to 7.8 Gbps data transfer rates, but in reality, it measured around 700 Mbps over Wi-Fi between the connected devices. That's actually common, as manufacturers list the theoretical maximum speeds. You will always get lower speeds in real-life conditions. The other important point is that your subscription level with your Internet Service Provider and the quality of the connection is the most significant factor for any online activity. If your Internet connections is rated at 20 Mbps, then that is the maximum throughput any device connected to your router will achieve when accessing resources over the Internet. It doesn't matter how "fast" your router is, you're limited by the amount of data your Internet connection provides when doing anything online.
W-Fi coverage was excellent. I did not experience any dead spots over the 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz channels. The RAXE300 also supports a 6 Ghz frequency, which is much more finicky regarding distance and line of sight, however I did not have any devices that supported that frequency for testing. Wi-Fi printers, doorbell and IP cameras, as well as smart devices like thermostats, light bulbs, alarms, smartphones and tablets all worked flawlessly.
You can use the router’s USB port to host a storage device. In this case, there are different ways to share the storage across the local network or the Internet. You also have to option to turn the router into a DLNA Media Server.
Setting it all up did not go smoothly. Following the setup guide, I downloaded the Nighthawk app to my smartphone, then scanned the tag on the router. The app stated the router was not supported. Huh? Being a network engineer, I was able to work around that, but for those whose expertise does not include networks, it might have been a bit more intimidating. I also don’t like that this requires you to register an account with Netgear, requiring information that may raise privacy concerns.
Other disappointments were a lack of quality of service (QoS) controls in the app. I did find QoS in the web interface that can be enabled, however once enabled, it appears to work based on a pre-configured database. There’s no way to know what it does or how well it does it. There appears to be very limited parental controls. Netgear offers a paid subscription for premium parental controls, as well as a 30-day trial of Netgear Armor subscription for security. There’s apparently no built-in online protection. Netgear has apparently removed remote management capability in this version of the software. For the past few years, it seems Netgear has been removing features from the web interface and have been pushing users towards the mobile app.
Overall, the Netgear AXE7800 (RAXE300) Tri-Band Wi-Fi Router performed very well, but in an effort towards either ease of use or a more profitable subscription model, lacks management features more technical users are accustomed to. Excellent performance warrants a 5-star rating, but some minor annoyances and lack of control prevents from awarding it the highest overall rating.
I also can’t figure out how to make it fly. It looks like it should, doesn’t it?

The NETGEAR Nighthawk AXE7800 is a total game-changer for my home Wi-Fi. The speed is insanely fast, and the coverage is awesome—I can stream, game, and work from anywhere in the house without any lag. Setup was a breeze, and I love the sleek design. The extra band really makes a difference, especially when multiple devices are connected. It’s definitely a bit of an investment, but if you want top-notch Wi-Fi, this router is totally worth it. Five stars all the way!
