    great product

I bought this to replace a Linksys router i'd had for sometime. Incredible difference in performance. Streaming content is smoother, online gaming over wifi works flawlessly, and setup is fairly simple. I chose this over a slightly comparable (and cheaper) netgear router because of the additional wifi extender unit. Seems to work well however I haven't tried plugging a device in via ethernet to see how well that works.

I was getting my internet connected at my new home and the installer said I needed a router to get connection for one side of the house to the other! Being such a large home it was important to be able to get a connection! This router works amazing and long distance! I can walk anywhere, even outside and it is still strong! I love this router and love that it was on sale when I bought it also!

I wasn't sure if this would be a simple set up device or not. But I had my Internet connections and channels configured within 20 mins. The Wifi connections truly reach the entire house now, especially with the added device in the bedroom that had never been able to reach any Wifi device previously. Love the product, no issues and easy setup. I couldn't ask for anything more than that...

    UPDATE THE FIRMWARE FIRST THING!!!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Please update the firmware of this router when you first set it up as there is a fairly bad security vulnerability in this and other model Netgear Nighthawk routers that was just recently fixed on 12/23/2016. I received this router as a gift from Best Buy for visiting their tech home demo at a local mall. As far as I know this router is a Best Buy exclusive that is essentially the R7000 router with a powerline adapter added to it. The power supply is internal due to the powerline adapter which is nice for anyone that can't stand wall warts blocking power outlets. I personally don't use the included powerline adapter and just use it as a normal wifi router. It works very well compared to my previous AC1750 class router. The only negative thing I would say about the product is the Dynamic QoS will not update to the latest version and from what I've researched it is because Netgear never bothered to include this model when it authenticates with their servers for the update thus it gets rejected and the update fails.

I was torn between the ASUS and Netgear routers. Heard great things about both. Decided on the Netgear because of the DST, figuring it would help with coverage in some parts of the house. Man, this baby rocks! Great coverage, very fast. My old iPad 2 has never been this responsive. Get this router!!!

Difficult to install, DST didn't work

I was trying to accomplish two things - improve wifi performance within my house (and my new ring.com doorbell) and extend the range to my garage. The Nighthawk accomplished the first, but not the second goal. The DST adapter only seemed to work if I put it on the same electrical circuit as the router was plugged into. It wouldn't connect to the outlet near/in the garage. Also, it was difficult to get working properly. The internet access light was on, but my PC had no internet access. I finally got it working on my own, while waiting for the Geek squad to call back by trying different answers to the install wizard. Then my wife's Macbook started requiring her to turn wifi off then on again every time it came out of sleep mode. Didn't do that with the old/cheap netgear router we had. I ended up returning it, and bought the new Google OnHub. Install was a snap, performance is great and we now have wifi in the garage without extenders of any kind.

Great Product Clueless Geek Squad Support

I love my new router. The DST adapter that came with it provides coverage in a part of my house that was a problem in the past. My only problem I have is with the GEEK SQUAD. If you have any issues take my advice call NETGEAR you will save yourself much frustration. After 3 calls, multiple transfers and 2 disconnects and 1 hour total on the phone I wasn't able to have a simple issue resolved that took Netgear 30 seconds to answer. I hope after the 90 days of support Netgear provides I won't need any further assistance.

    Good Router but horrible service

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

First, the router itself is pretty amazing. It delivers on the range and quality of service it promises, and I did not even have to plug in the adapter in our house, which had plenty of dead spots before. Problem is the whole remote printing that is offers and the Geek Squad service that supposedly comes with the router. I connected my printer via USB to the router and according to its features, you are supposed to have remote printing from any device connected to it's network. This did not work, so I contacted the "free" Geek Squad support, only to be told after 1/2 hour that I need to pay $99 for them to resolve the situation as a printer is not considered a "set-up" issue...even though it had to do with setting up the router. By far the worse customer service experience. To summarize, if you want a good router, this router will do the job, but for the money you will pay, you should get everything else that comes advertised with it, and you do not, therefore consider something else.

Greater router - easy to set up

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Router was easy to set up - did not need Geek Squad help. Even easy to change the network names and passwords. And I am only so-so as far as being "Tech Savvey." OK, I had,to call my ISP so their system would recognize my new router, but that wasn't due to any router issue! I purchased the one with the DST adapter to eliminate a weak spot in my house (and the sale price was the same as the router without the adapter), but found this router was more powerful than my old one so did not need the DST adapter. Be aware that if you DO need to use the DST adapter, that the router cannot be plugged into a surge protector - it is supposed to plug directly into an outlet - since the DST system uses the home electrical wiring. However, I live in a major lightening area so prefer to use a surge protector (not for the actual lightening strikes, but for the power surges that happen when a nearby electrical box gets zapped). However, even with the router plugged into a surge protector, I was able to find a few outlets that gave a "green light" for the adapter. Be aware that the DST adapter has a different network name than the router itself. So if you have a portable device (like a tablet) that you use in various locations, you may need to switch between the router and the adapter networks. Ditto if you switch between the two bands (two different network names). For example, to use the 5 GHz band to watch hi-def movies on your tablet, but use 2.4 for everything else, you need to switch networks. You get a greater distance range with the 2.4 GHz, but more interference. But the 2.4 band is more than sufficient for e-mail and web browsing.

Is there a setting that limits total connections? how about for limiting total throughput if that is even a possibility? The main router unit seems to have good coverage. Connected to Service Electric 25/5mbps package. Upload tests out near 5mbps pretty consistently but not perfect. Download almost never tests 25mbps on either hardwire or wifi. Still can get basic functions and streaming when one device maybe two are connected. However, when the whole family is connected we have problems with basic functionality. If one device is uploading a cloud photo backup the entire pipeline up and downstream gets choked up to the point it's unusable. This could be that Service Electric is terrible or it could be the router. I don't know. I've tested the modem, I've done troubleshooting from provider. 2.4 Ghz coverage is pretty wide. 5Ghz and guest network are inconsistent. DST is very inconsistent. sometimes it's an AMAZING solution to getting signal from basement to backyard deck. Sometimes the 2.4 network from main unit is stronger than 2.4 DST which is very frustrating. overall I can't give a complete review until I can tell for sure if my pipeline is complete and fully functional

Worked great for the first year - Netgear R7300

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this to replace a working ASUS N900 purchased previously at Best Buy. At first, I got much better coverage with the R7300 without using the DST component and the speed was better (Spectrum 300). Within the last week, I could not connect to it from any of my laptops (Windows, Mac and Ubuntu). When swapped in the ASUS N900, everything worked. Later the next day I got an Airport Extreme at Best Buy which is rock solid with the laptops, TV's, thermostats and DVD player. I will probably get a refurb Airport Extreme as a backup since Apple is getting out of the router business.

    Bad buy

This was purchased as a replacement for my Linksys wrt350 which died due to a power surge. I have always bought Linksys products so I thought I would give Netgear a shot. This router came highly recommended so I figured I could not go wrong, right? Wrong!!!! Setup was a breeze but the connection speed was terrible. Took forever to load web pages and let's not get into the xbox issues. I googled rhe slow download speed problem and was quite surprised at how many people complained about this same problem. No comlaints on Best Buy's review pages about this however.....strange. I returned same day as purchased and got another Linksys. This will definitely be my last Netgear purchase.

I needed a strong and fast router for a client. Have always had great results with Netgear, so stuck with what I already know works. This router is the first I've tried of this series and it really did the trick! Lots of speed and LOTS of signal where I needed it. I didn't need to use the included wireless repeater, but for the price why not buy the bundle and have it! :o) You'll be happy with this purchase, really!

Router fine-adapter and Geek Squad not so much

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Set up was easy until we discovered the included adapter did not match wireless ID or password for the router so we could not sign in to the extender. It took 3 calls to Geek Squad only to be told to pack it up and bring it back to the store to have Geek Squad look at it. All I wanted was someone to walk me through the process of changing the ID and password of the extender if that was possible. Now we have to get a new router and re-hook up our wireless network at home. Save yourself the aggravation and just purchase a separate extender.

Purchased this one without reading any reviews. I went in and talked to the a few guys that were working at the time. I explained that this time I just came straight in and need help. The didn't try to over sell anything, didn't try to sell the most expensive one they had. They all went straight to this router when I explained my situation. The extender is also a great addition. Took me awhile to figure that part out, but I called geek squad and they talked me through it.
