Netgear Nighthawk R7000 router
||Posted . Owned for 5 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was an online order with store pickup and everything went well. This device was a replacement for an older router which had worn out and wasn't working well. Setup on this new router was relatively easy but the process for resetting the password was not obvious. Contact with the manufacturer cleared things up. This device has given me better coverage in the house.

Frustrated
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Let me begin by saying that I’m far from a tech idiot, but network programming hasn’t always been my strong point. Typically, I’d expect having to set up wireless security, changing login information, reconnecting WiFi dependent devices around my home, etc. However, after doing all of that, my wife told me she could no longer connect to a few of her friends with her Switch. We also play on Xbox with some friends who were getting our game invites, but failing to join our sessions. I did the typical web search and tried some things with no luck. This is where it goes bad. My first call to tech support goes through a non-tech support operator who verified that I actually need tech help and assigns me a case number. He also took my telephone number IN CASE WE WERE DISCONNECTED. He then transferred me to tech support, where I wait on hold for 27 minutes and the call disconnects. I waited for about an hour for a callback and went to bed after not receiving one. The next day, I called tech support back. The exact same thing happened, except I only waited 24 minutes on hold this time. Again, no callback after 15 minutes. The third and final time I called, I explained to the operator what happened and they sent me through to tech support again. 17 minutes on hold this time, but I actually got a technician who listened to my issue. He then placed me on hold again for 10 minutes while he “looked up some information”. Upon returning to the call, he had me try one thing and reboot. Again, the call disconnected with no return phone call from him. 30 minutes later, Netgear emailed me a survey to see how their tech service did. It was the worst rated survey I’ve ever given. My next step was to re-install my old router (which took 5 minutes). Within 10 minutes, we were playing with our friends again online. I also have never had to open ports or turn off firewalls to play with anyone on a console before. I certainly didn’t expect to have to do this with a gaming router. Another frustrating part of all of this is that Netgear tries to get you to buy their security software while you’re in the programming section of your router. They also sell a diagnostic tool ($39.95) to enable you to open communication ports more easily. It appears that they intentionally program their routers this way to trick people into thinking that they have to buy their software in order to get the router to function properly. The frustration with tech support outweighs the good of this unit by far. Go buy something else. If I’m contacted by Netgear before I return this unit, I’ll edit this review. If there’s no edit, then Netgear continues to verify how dead on this review is regarding their terrible service.

Very good, but not great.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was excited to hook up the Nighthawk in my large home to replace my Netgear N900 router. I found the hook up to be easy and the router seems reasonably fast, but it isn't significantly more powerful. I can get a signal 4 to 6 feet further from the router than the N900, but still over one third of my house can only get WiFi with an extender. I think the Nighthawk is a good router, but way over-hyped.

Best of the best
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the best router. I literally bought and returned a handful of different routers. This is a pricey router but you get what you pay for. There is an iPhone app as well to configure pretty much anytime. Its easy to use and install. This router is pretty new, so it has all the new wireless standards. I recommend this to anyone that can afford to pay a little extra on a router. Trust me, don't buy cheap junk when it comes to wi-fi in your home!

Highly Recommended
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Night Hawk NETGEAR50 was recommended by my internet provider tech, and also by Best Buys sales person. I like it, but have only had it for about four months. It may prove to be the best router I've ever had!

Great product, once the firmware is updated
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This router works great. It's fast, easily configurable, and you can access it with your smart phone. I did have an issue with the DNS server dropping when I first started using it. I called NETGEAR tech support and after some troubleshooting, recommended updating the firmware to the most recent level. After that was done, I have had no problems and it's been up for a few weeks now with no resets.
