Much Faster Than My Old Router

This Nighthawk is a replacement for an OLD, outdated wireless router. This provides faster speeds and allows me to expand my system via a USB hard drive or even a thumb drive! Firmware updates are provided via the Nighthawk app. I recommend this to anyone who wants more speed and the ability to handle more wireless devices on their system.

Love the integrated dDNS and VPN functionality, and notifications from the app of goings-on on my network. Easy to harden everything with an IP reservation pool and rules to reject all else. Easy to see historical and real time bandwidth use age. Have an ad blocking DNS solution on a Raspberry Pi integrated with router. Everything runs quite fast and smoothly.

Been in IT for almost 20 years and purchasing this router is the worst mistake I've made with technology in a very long time. You're probably looking at this model because it is one of the cheaper AC routers that's on the market and has the netgear and nighthawk name to it. I implore you to read further. First of all...This router is also known as the r7000. Search the web for "r7000 Wi-Fi disconnect". As other reviewers have said this router has constant connectivity drops. While the signal is very strong you will occasionally lose your Wi-Fi connection for up to a minute several times a day. Support has acknowledged that it is a known issue and will guide you through an unproductive series of steps. Secondly....It has usb ports for connecting external devices the faster USB 3.0 Port is in of all places on the FRONT of the router!?!? This should be on the back in a more clean location rather than having this awful protrusion on the front of your router making it difficult to mount and awkward for cable management. The hard drive compatibility list is extremely limited. Only a handful of external hard drives can be used with this device. The good part is that it has a cool name....."night hawk". Aside from that I would skip this model there are some that are just a few dollars more comparatively speaking that are much better. If my review stops one additional person for making the same mistake I did this was a success.

The sales associate helped me pick this device. I have about 8 devices connected to it. I have no issues with streaming. The setup was beyond easy, done all on the NetGear app no downloading software.

    It's big...

It's huge. The Netgenie interface is fabulous; very easyto set-up, to change settings and to visually map your network. I upgraded from an old Cisco that was flashed to dd-wrt and a proven workhorse but it lacked ipv6 and ac wi-fi. The Netgear chooses which band to maximize performance on multiple devices. My major issues with the device are cosmetic. I mount my router high on the wall, upside down apparently, as the NETGEAR logo is now facing me upside down. The operating LEDs are too bright, so bright in fact, they cast shadows in a dark room and kept me awake the first night. Luckily, there is a setting in the "advanced" settings of the Netgenie to disable them; If not, I would have returned it. I still had to Sharpie over the power light turn it into an indicator and not a night-light. I've only been using it about a week so I can not yet speak to some of the features or it's durability and reliability.

This router is by far the best I've ever owned. Between my roommate and I we connect up to 5 items and one of those is a desktop used for gaming and I'm still getting 85 Mbps on a laptop. Definitely recommend this router.

This Netgear router is a great purchase, it’s even better for adapting ExpressVPN for your small business, home, or apartment. ExpressVPN has a flawless firmware upgrade that makes every device in business (unless you easlily exclude device) use ExpressVPN.

    Router Upgrade

Once installed, it was great. From a generation that doesn't use a lot of apps found it hard to install but gave in and download the app and it was a breeze. Thought it was funny the check out person told us to watch a youtube video if we needed help. But once you disconnect the router you have and trying to install the new one you have NO internet to use to watch the video. An again the older generation doesn't usually have a data plan on the cell phone (unlimited WIFI).
