I live in a large old house and my old, mid priced router was initially doing a decent job. There were areas of the house were the router signal would periodically drop and this was improved when I got a repeater. As I started adding more and more devices to my wireless network, dropped signals started to become more and more of an issue. When I covered just about every area of the house with a Sonos system, dropped router connections really became an issue. I currently have about 27 devices connected to the network. Did some research and decided upon this Netgear Nighthawk product. I have it installed at one corner of the first floor on the north side of my two story home. Very happy with the performance. It very powerfully connects and reaches every area of my 5,000 square foot home save for the extreme southern part on the second floor, where it still provides coverage that I was previously unable to have. Quite satisfied and highly recommended for someone with similar conditions to mine.

I have the Nighthawk C7000 so I figured I would try this as I am seemingly adding more and more wifi devices to my network and wanted to run my own cloud storage, I wanted to kind of "future-proof" my equipment. Initially excited about the tri-band but ultimately disappointed. The signal reach in my house was less than the C7000. I know the C7000 has longer antennas but you would thing with 6 antennas on the C8000 vs the 3 on the other would be more than enough. It wasn't. Also, the smart connect didn't do a good job in moving devices around to the appropriate bands. The C7000 does a much better job moving my device to 2.4GHZ when it's too far away and then back to 5GHZ when I can get a stronger signal. The C8000 kept me on 2.4GHZ, so it caused weak signals in certain areas on my home. As of now the only things I can say about this device that's better than the C7000 is both USB ports are on the back so makes it more convenient and a cleaner look to use rather than having wires running from both the front and back of your router. Other than that, sorely overpriced for performance degradation.

I read others reviews & was very skeptical about purchasing this router! I figured with the 45 day return policy I was safe enough to try it out... well, it's been nearly 45 days & we absolutely love this router! We have nearly 40 items constantly running off the router & now with this Nighthawk, everything is nearly perfect! The only issue we have is with the Xbox ONE's... we have 3 of these systems in the house & the Xbox ONE's do not like the Nighthawk router...however, call up Netgear & after they walked us through getting them setup, have not had any issues since. Others have said they had issues with their router dropping and having to reset...well, we did have the first week of wondering if we'll have that same issue, but once we got through the hiccups, everything works perfect! Let's face it...we all are gaining more & more electronics requiring a better router....the Nighthawk answers that problem with an A++++ ... at some point we'll probably have 50+ items requiring an even better router...lol...just hope by then there is yet another better one!

8000: I was very afraid to get this... as I did a ton of reading and reviews. I bought this, brought it home set it up. Everything seemed to work fine... It soon asked for a firmware update... but after I did the update, it broke!! It basically said firmware is damaged... so I had to return it to the store. (Different review - 8500) After more reviews I decided to spend MORE money and get the 8500. Figured, heck- I got nothing else to lose. If this one goes bad too, I'll just stick to the lower AND GOOD routers. GLAD I GOT THE 8500! I Upon installation, and setup, asked for firmware update too. Scared, but did it- and it went with no issues. Almost a month now, and the 8500 just had to be restarted twice. Again, as for the 8000, I had bad issues with it... maybe just my luck. I've heard bad issues with some folks too with the 8500, so just be warned that you might get a bad experience too with either or! I'd stick with the older versions of the 7000 series if I had to choose to spend equal or less value from this one.

I work out of my home office, with two computers and a tablet, an internet phone and three televisions, the cable box and an Apple TV. . We have several other devices - laptops and tablets, and wireless printers. 20 or so devices that could be online or streaming at the same time. After we installed this unit, our networking response problems disappeared. It was very easy to install and our devices all connected to the unit seamlessly. The security seems pretty standard, and I feel as secure as one can feel these days. We have cable internet, and we see consistently high upload and download speeds, another huge improvement over our previous wireless router. We really couldn't afford to continue with our old router, as I rely heavily on connectivity for my work at home. if you have bandwidth and other home network streaming problems you should consider this unit as a strong solution for a home wireless network. It's not the most expensive model on the market. And there are others with more horsepower. This one works great for us.

I have had 4 routers in my life so I like to get the good ones and don’t mind spending some cash for them. Up until now I have never had one that i felt was worth the money. Other brands would have weak signals or need reset each week or month. This one is NOT like the others. I have a theater room off the back of my house and it’s a good distance from the main house. Even through brick exterior and 75 feet, I still get a quality signal out of this guy! Very impressed by the app too. Setup was an ease with the downloadable app... saves having to find a lap top with a network plug to configure everything. In addition, it allows you to test the speed and make tweaks all within the app itself.

I have 20 plus devices on my network at all times I purchased this and it handles them all flawlessly, no lag, no drop in connection at all and it automatically assigns devices their own channel and power frequency and seperates the slow devices from the faster devices with smart connection feature. The r8000 is my main router and I use a r7000 as a wired access point at one of the dead spots in my large home and the system works excellent. I am a high tech user and keep in mind home routers are not designed for great range so if you have a large home the use of a second router as a WIRED access point is the greatest benefit to your network. If you set this router up properly it will work better than expected and the genie sfrtware is excellent and a great benefit to the system.

Poor choice if using security cameras via WiFi

    Posted
    PeterLeman

Our household is a heavy user of the internet. We have a 400 Mbps connection to support a variety of streaming devices, computers, iPads, Nest security cameras, phones, and other smart devices. We demand a consistently strong signal that doesn’t drop / interrupt your game / kick the cameras off-line. After one week of use, we found that the router dropped signals (on all three bands - G, N, and AC) at least once a day, putting my smart home in complete disarray. Probably not a big deal for most, but my older router was more consistent. Lastly, this router has six antennas on it, so I naturally expected it to reach a greater portion of our home. This device has difficulty providing full coverage for our 2,000 square foot home. Note: Updating firmware did not result in a performance difference.

I recently changed office space and my provider upped the speed of my internet so I went looking for a fast, reliable and secure router. I wanted one that was easy to use but powerful. Range and speed when working with multiple devices was a must. The NIghthawk R8000 checked every box on the list. 1. Multiple Freq. bands to handle old and new devices. 2. Speed, no bottlenecks 3. Easy Set up 4. Security The R8000 set up was easy and the NetGenie software makes monitoring whose on the network easy as well. The multiple frequencies work well and allows allocation of resources multiple devices based on capability, Security also built in and setting are easy to adjust or change. The range is incredible reducing the need for range expanders. i placed one in my home as well and the range and device handling capabilities has allowed me to grow you home automation system and eliminate some bad spots. And it looks very cool so its an addition to the home office. I recommend this router for the serious user.

This router is amazing. It is constantly switching devices around on the 2 5ghz chanels in order to make sure everything is running as fast as possible. I used to download a video game in 8 hours. I now do it in 1. Netflix used to lag and stop and start. Now it runs smoothly. To stream a rental or purchased movie from iTunes used to take a minimum of 30 minutes for the initial load. The movies now start in about a minute and run flawlessly. I do recommend that if you are using an Apple TV, do not upgrade the firmware to version 1.0.2.44_1.0.96. After the upgrade, Netflix on the apple TV would abruptly knock me back to the menu screen when watching an episode of a show. Stick with firmware version 1.0.1.16-1.0.74. It works flawlessly with no issues I have detected. I upgraded and then switched back.

Presentation: Package was well presented, no broken/unwrapped box. Product was in excellent condition and came with all documentation. Installation: Really easy to setup. You do not have to be a computer genius to install this router. In approximately 10-15 minutes I was up and running. Performance: To the Wired ports I have a PS4 and a Xbox One connected to them. I can have both of them downloading/streaming simultaneously and the speed difference is relatively none. For the wireless connections, I had 2 phones, 2 Kindle tablets, the kids WiiU and their TV streaming on Netflix and everything worked perfectly, no buffering at all. And make sure to download the iPhone APP, it has features for you to use remotely and control for your kids connected devices (a must). Note: Awareness should be present that your internet connection speed is extremely important for this. I have a 100MB+ connection speed, so that helps the Nighthawk X6 router to take advantage at its maximum capacity.

Bought this because it was hyped to have great range and speed. Replaced a Linksys EA4500 that died. This cost about 3 1/2 times the Linksys, and it gave me the exact same range in the house, and I certainly could not tell the difference in speed. I have been a long time Linksys user, and I depend on Remote Desktop to connect from office to home, and back. I have set up many Linksy routers for the same purpose, and I have only had a problem if I DID NOT PUT IN THE RIGHT information. I checked and double checked this, but it would not work. Finally, I connected via CHAT with Netgear tech support. After 3 hours with two different support people, I came to the simple conclusion that I knew more than they did, and it still would not work. I then got a new modem/router combination from Comcast Xfinity, hooked it up, set it up with port forwarding, and it worked perfectly and immediately. Bottom line: NOT WORTH THE PRICE, and their TECH SUPPORT STAFF IS CLUELESS. Best Buy was great at taking it back, another reason to shop Best Buy.

    NO RF power levels adjustment

To my surprise, some of the published specs on this router are abysmal. Some of the people involved in the development and marketing definitely dropped the ball here. As for today, the mobile Genie app does not work with the router. Neither the parental control feature. Statements about features as “powerful amplifiers” and “high performance antennas” does not give any details about the unit. And the thing that pushed me to write this review is that there is no way do adjust RF power levels. So in other words if you are in an RF environment with multiple APs in order to customize the RF coverage, there is no way to decrease the power levels in order to mitigate possible interferences or adjust coverage based on specific needs or configurations. This is a very basic feature that is widely included in most of the wireless routers & AP, but not in the R8000. Disappointing. Update the firmware please and get the right people involved in the development.

Presentation/Availability: Product was well packaged with no broken/opened box. There were many available at the store. Performance: It does exactly what I needed from this device. Really easy to setup, just follow the provided instructions and you will be fine. Final installation is connected to your internet, so make sure you have an internet ready. I strongly recommend you download the NetGenie app for your phone. It gives you extra tools for controlling your router usage and parental controls for internet content. I did a stress test to the router which consisted of: 2 gaming consoles connected through a wired and streaming Netflix; 2 smart phones on Wi-Fi streaming videos and one TV on Wi-Fi streaming Netflix. EVERYTHING worked perfectly. Customer service: Very good customer service. I was greeted by an employee as soon as I walked through the door and helped me to contact the correct employee at the right area for getting my product, which I did quickly.

Having used many wireless routers over the years the X6 by far has been the best piece of hardware I have ever encountered. From setup to production it was by far the easiest configuration process I have ever seen. However don't let the ease of configuration fool you as this device comes packed with every setting an IT Administrator could ever want! From security to complete network control this device has got it! Did I mention the speed! Obviously a network is only as fast as the weakest link but if designed properly and with the right set of hubs, switches, etc... You can achieve gigabit speeds on data transfers which in my world makes all the difference on work station backups, file transfers to and from the NAS, etc... The range is also second to none! The 6 high performance antennas are adjustable allowing you to configure them for maximum distance. So far the most reliable WiFi signal I have ever seen.

Man, talk about first class upgrade! I've been eyeballing this routing for quite sometime now. So when the opportunity presented it self, I did not hesitated. Speed, coverage area and load up and down, no problem. This router can do all that and more. We have multiple devices connected and there seems to be no problem with speed. When I walk outside to look for my son, roaming around the block, I still have connection (2 houses and I still have bars on my phone). If you are looking for a new router or if you have been looking to upgrade, spend the money. It may seem expensive but once you have it, you will not regret it. The way I see it, it will take many years before I upgrade again to another router.

I have to say that this is a great router. I have this downstairs in my basement. It currently is in the farthest lower corner of the house and gives great coverage. I do plan to locate it in a more central location in a stairwell opening when I can get an Ethernet cable run to that spot. I get good coverage for my whole house already, and when it is better located I expect full strength signal throughout the house. They are slightly lower at the farthest distances in the house, but that is expected. I found that it was very easy to set up with the interface easy to use. The only thing I have had a problem with is that I could not see my WD MyCloud when I had it connected via USB, but it does see it when it is connected via Ethernet. I have not had a chance yet to investigate if it is a router issue or a WD issue. Once I get the X6 relocated it will make my home network much simpler which previously consisted of 2 routers and a network extender. Well worth the money.

I use this router as an access point after my FIOS router to get a little more bandwidth for the (surprising) variety of devices in the house that need Wi-Fi. They really start creeping up on you - printers, phones, tablets, laptops, chromecasts...I ran a few speed tests and its throughput appears to handle some more demanding tasks, including video streaming for 9 ip cameras. I did notice some devices on the 5 ghz band would occasionally lose connectivity, but with the caveat that they lost connectivity on the opposite corner of the house and two floors away from the router. That, I feel, is an understandable issue and not something I'd count against the otherwise excellent router. As a side note, the router's software is pretty intuitive (although I have a good working knowledge of networking) and it was fairly easy to manipulate to my needs. All in all, it's a solid router and I'm happy with it so far.

This router certainly has the horsepower to handle all my connecting WiFi devices. It was very easy to get setup, however it has taken me a couple of weeks working with their tech support to get the most from the router. I kept having issues with the WiFi just dropping offline at random times and when it returns (reboots?) speeds sometimes are in the low 10s Mbps!! I will say that so far the tech support I've been using through email has been trying to figure out the issue and has given a lot of different options to try. They have stated that if they can't figure out the problem they will replace the router, which of course I would expect since its brand new!! Even with the issues I've experienced I would still recommend this router because when it is working its great!! I may have just gotten a defective one.

I am tech savy but even if I were not this set up like a dream! Absolutely no hang ups and I have not lost or dropped signal anywhere in my house which is a 2400 sq ft ranch so it is stretched out. Currently managing 4 phones, 6 tablets, 3 laptops, 3 tvs, xbox1 and a ps4 with no issues. It is big and obtrusive, some of the connections are in places that make little sense. The directional antennas seem cheap and easily broken if not kept in a safe spot. The only issue I have with this and most of the rest is the lack of a cable input. Why don't they make a router compatible with cable??? That being said if you buy this router you still need the old cable modem to send signal to the router.
