I had really high hopes for this router. As soon as they updated the firmware it bottlenecked at the router and gave me super slow speeds wirelessly and wired

I returned the first unit after a week of trouble talking to Netgear. The second unit I had the same problem and noticed the problem occurred after firmware 1.0.0.110 was installed. I used an earlier version and unit worked fine. Since then I reported to Netgear and latest firmware 1.0.1.16 works great. I have great coverage. Did not give a 4 or 5 because of the initial problems I had but Netgear did fix the firmware problem after I complained about it.

This is a great router for a person the has a 500mb plan or less. Easy install great management of devices and ease of App navigation. It's only short fall is the current firmware will not support 1gb service plans.

Unfortunately, after being a happy customer / user for almost 3 years with no issues, now have a problem that looks like hardware problem - all ethernet ports (WAN + LAN) are now limited / capped to 10 Mbps that is way low from 1Gbps it use to be (and definitely cannot handle 200 Mbps from my ISP :( ). It happened suddenly last week, have tried factory reset / firmware re-flash / downgrade, nothing helps, Netgear support no help as well, so if you look for long time investment - please take my case into consideration. BTW, I now back using my very old Apple AirPort Extreme (3-rd generation) that can still handle 1Gbps on all ethernet ports (with not such a good WIFI coverage though :( @@@@@@@

Had firmware issues with the first one so I had to swap it out. Caused the WiFi to stop broadcasting completely and was not able to factory reset. Netgear told me to swap it out after calling tech support.

Long range, covers my whole house. Great speed, a lot better than what I previously had (verizon issued router). I have had to reboot it once because one of the network bands would no longer connect but there has been a firmware upgrade sense then that appears to have corrected the problem.

Excellent router. Best coverage I have ever had and I have owned a ton of routers over the last 25 years. Genie app is great to use and user friendly. Beware of upgrading the firmware. I had to return the first one even after reverting back to original firmware. After many forums I discovered it was causing problems. The firmware 1.0.3.36 is what came in the box and the update is 46. I suggest not upgrading until that version is fixed but that is up to you. I can actually reach up to 120ft and still get a good enough signal to watch YouTube without buffering... incredible

    Great Router but Buggy Firmware

In general, this is an excellent WiFi router. Not overly hard to set up and has excellent WiFi speed and great range. I have a number of computers and devices hooked up to it. I back up my computers with it as well. For someone who wants a solid general WiFi router, this is an excellent choice. One of the things I wanted to do with it was to run a VPN service to have a secure link while using public WiFi. Alas, the latest firmware is buggy (others have found this as well) and it has broken VPN and some other passthrough services. If you want to go beyond a straight WiFi router, this is not a good choice right now. I cannot recommend it for those who do.

I purchased the X6 as an upgrade from my ASUS router hoping to finally have some solid wireless ability..... boy was I wrong. Constant connectivity issues, extremely buggy firmware, a crippled built-in cloud service and inflated reception claims have left me very dissatisfied with this piece of hardware. Time to start shopping for something else....

    Great Router, Poor Longevity

The router itself is fairly simple to set up with the mobile app, and has great coverage and connection. However my personal unit failed after 6 months and was replaced with a different product. Through online searches, this particular router suffers from poor firmware that fairly frequently causes the product to brick, and be rendered unusable. If you plan to purchase this product, I would highly recommend a protection plan in case of failure, as it saved me from spending another $200.

Intermittent disconnects. Won't connect at all after firmware update. Won't factory reset. An expensive brick.

Was using this router for a couple of months. Since the moment I got it, there were internet disconnections every day. Internet was dropped few times a day and in many cases the only way to get it back was to reboot the router. Latest firmware, etc - nothing helped.

The set-up process was fairly easy, and I had it up and working quickly. There are some limitations to the firmware (e.g., limited options for Dynamic DNS), but it was easily converted to DD-WRT. I got this at a considerable discount (price matching with Amazon). I do not think I would have paid full retail price for it.

I live in a 100 year old victorian home that has walls made of wood, not sheetrock, that are very hard to penetrate. I bought this router to cover my entire house and it did not disappoint. The router is easy to setup and has two USB ports on the back (unlike many new routers that puts the USB 3 on the front) which keeps all your connections tucked away nicely in the back. My only gripe with this router is that the firmware can be unresponsive at times, which I hope is fixed in an update coming soon.

This is a good looking router, but has a lot of shortfalls. To get gigabit speeds on a wired connection, almost all of the extra management features need to be turned off. This is due to the necessary hardware acceleration to achieve that speed. Wireless on the 2.4GHz band maxed out at 15-20Mbps on my iPhone's and laptop, 5GHz band at 30Mbps. We reset the device, updated firmware, and tweaked to no avail.

I tried out the Netgear R7000 and was disappointed with the performance and the bugs in the firmware. The r8000 is worth the extra money the firmware is still young and needs a few tweaks yet like the QOS doesn't seem to work all that well yet. This thing has been rock stable and gets full signal in all parts of the house and shoots 1/2 mile down the road with good bandwidth. I also need something that would keep up with the 20 devices on the WIFI with out choking. Worth every penny but hate having to wait for things that should already work in the next update, but at least they are fixing the issues still worth the wait best router out there right now.
