I was using the Netgear wndr3700v2 for over 2 years, I had at least 8-10 wireless devices attached, along with my 3 gaming consoles and desktop computer (also was using a Netgear extender that was connected to the router). That router was a workhorse and it served me the best that it could do for it's time that worked. Then a few weeks ago the router started to drop signals constantly, I knew it was time for a new router. I did a lot of research before purchasing this router; after all it is a 300$ purchase! I looked at Linksys, Asus, Belkin, etc. and saw what they had to offer. I purchased the Netgear R8000 first from Staples (Best Buy stores don't have it in stock) and I loved it - no issues whatsoever with it. Then, I read about the ASUS RT-AC87R and it's impressive hardware specs that it had. I returned my Netgear R8000 to Staples and bought the ASUS from Best Buy. I installed it and it ran good, speeds where the same, coverage around 4+ bedroom house at farthest locations were about the same. However, the signal tended to drop a few times throughout the day - I researched this issue among other forums and had found that ASUS's firmware for this router was very buggy, the hardware of the ASUS was not the issue but the firmware was. I then went on BestBuy.com and ordered the Netgear R8000, I picked it up today and returned the ASUS. Also I would like to point out, the newer ASUS router (one that I had) and future newer ones will use MU-MIMO technology - it is an awesome piece of hardware to have in your router as long as your current wireless device supports it, almost no current device on the market supports this yet. Setup was very easy for the router, took less then 20 minutes to open the box, setup the SSID and the passwords for 3 different bands that is supported by the router; also with the firmware update that it had. Design is the only thing that could have been just a tad bit better but that's only superficial and the most opinionated thing that I have to say about this piece of networking hardware. One awesome thing about this router is that it has an on/off for the LED lights - which is handy if you put this router in your bedroom and do not want to see flickering lights before you go to sleep. Reliability, speed, range, etc. I used this router to download large 2+ gb files on my desktop while streaming to a video box, while having 2 laptops, 2 tablets, 3 smartphones connected to it. It performed terrific with everything connected to it simultaneously. I am very happy with the R8000 and I would recommend to anyone

So Far the Best Router We Ever Owned

Before making an expensive purchase on a product meant to be used extensively I always read customer reviews. I start with the one star then work up. What I noticed were two negatives which stood out: 1.) Purchasers kept losing network connections and had to do a hard reset. 2.) Purchasers said configuration was difficult. While we have only had this router for two weeks we have not had to do a reset as of yet. Also, configuration was somewhat a breeze. If you let the router do its work and are patient it will get you online handily. It does take time to configure itself and one may be thinking "it's not working"; yet let it go and it will do its "configuration thing". As for the pluses we see in our household (which includes a home-based business, two desktop computers, two wireless printers, four tablets, four smart phones, three laptops, a smart TV, a smart thermostat) the Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200, which replaced our Netgear R6300 (a good router as well), added noticeable speed and especially range from the router by quite a bit. My son is an avid streamer and does not see his Internet speed slowed down at all which is critical while streaming, slowdowns did sometimes happen with the 6300. While I do feel the router is a bit pricey at over $300 with tax, so far I have not heard, "the Internet disconnected" or "the Internet is really slow". Not having to hear that, at least so far, is peace of mind to me. One thing you must do upon purchasing is upgrade the firmware to the newest version! I believe many of the bad reviews are using older firmware. If we start to have issues I will stay up to date and amend this review, yet so far so good. If you just use the default settings you should not be sorry

he Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200 might be more expensive than the average router but, as a tri-band device that supports the 802.11ac standard, it's flexible enough to accommodate all your devices and their varying connection needs. Getting the X6 AC3200 up and running is a "no-brainer" according to PC Mag, and TweakTown says that the "basic menu system for the X6 lays everything out in a simple manner," though Gizmodo Australia feels it might be "a little simplistic for the power users." Once you've got it set up, the X6 is ready to handle your various needs, with TweakTown calling it "a transition router, with legacy 2.4GHz devices having their very own band, and then having two separate 5GHz bands" to handle newer devices. But, though they say it allows you to use 802.11n "without bottlenecking the AC devices," CNET notes that you'll only really notice the advantage if "you have a lot of 802.11ac clients -- like a dozen of them or more." In action, Gizmodo Australia says it "clocks great Wi-Fi transfer rates," with TweakTown saying the X6 AC3200 "performed quite well" at 2.4GHz and "pretty well" at 5GHz. CNET calls it "one of the fastest I've seen." However, CNET also had some problems with "random disconnections," and noted that at a distance of 100 feet, "it registered just 242Mbps, noticeably slower than 295Mbps of its predecessor." On the other hand, PC Mag actually noticed "increased signal strength" at 30 feet compared to 5 feet, "a rarity well worth noting," though it "lost range at 30 feet in 2.4GHz mode." While it exhibits some inconsistent results across distances, you can count on the Nitehawk X6 AC3200 to connect to all your devices no matter their age, making it an ideal buy for users looking to make the leap to 802.11ac without leaving their older a/b/g/n devices behind.

This is by far the best router I've ever owned. I'm getting the the max speed on speedtest.net which is 100mbps download speed wirelessly in a large home with 3 levels. I am very experienced with complicated setups and networking, but this router could have been setup with a laptop or tablet without being hard wired during initial setup by a chimp in a few minutes. It was the easiest and best setup software I have ever used. Usually I don't use the setup software and just do it manually, but this software was amazing and I enjoyed using it. All of my past routers get slow and deteriorate after time, like every 3 to 4 years. I've seen it happen over the past 14 years with various routers and also read a lot about it online. Every router slows and deteriorates after time. The internal heat and the fact that they are on 24/7 is the cause. I hope it doesn't happen to this one, but it probably will just like every other one I've had. When your wireless router is 3 or more years old and you need to reset or reboot it every day or so, it's time to replace it. For this price, I hope this router last me at least 5 years this time. I love everything about this router. I found 0 negatives. It also looks really cool!!!

I replaced my Wndr4500 (N900) router with this one. Where I noticed the difference is when I stream movies from my media server while gaming. Using the N900, my movies would glitch and freeze if someone was gaming at the same time so I had to copy the file to usb and physically move it to watch a move and game. With the x6, I can stream and have multiple gaming systems on without interruptions. My household was able to stream a MKV file, have two PCs playing Titanfall and play COD on XBOX One perfectly. So far I have not experienced and drops or issues. The SMART Connect on the 5ghz channel also works well. Before this purchase I tried the Linksys AC1900, but it was dropping and eventually overheated and shut down. Knowing this is SU-MIMO, my only fear is that I'll want to upgrade to MU-MIMO when it becomes available. I am also interested in seeing how good DD-WRT works on this when it becomes available. I am using this in conjunction with my old N900 as a wireless bridge to connect my systems downstairs (Direct TV movie downloads and guest network). I'm not sure if I really need this setup, but it's cool and I feel better using my N900 since it was such a great router too. It also worked well in cascade mode, but again I really didn't need to. I helped take the load off the main router with my media server plugged into it if you feel like giving the x6 a break. Again, not necessary, just cool.

Excellent router. I have around 20-30 devices connected to this on a regular basis and it does well with them. It has the 2.4G network that has speeds up to 600mbps for older/cheaper devices as well as two 5G networks that you can have the router automatically balance all your devices between the two to get the best speed. I have a google cast device in every room and this has no issues with them communicating between each other or when trying to cast to them. I had tried a TP-Link Deco mesh system and it was a mess with all my google cast devices, none of them could communicate with each other and my printer even had connection issues so I went back to the Nighthawk and have had zero issues since. It has a physical switch to turn all the led lights off except the power/status light which is nice. It has gigabit WAN and LAN ports which is a must nowadays. I desktop game wirelessly with this router and have zero issues with ping or speed (granted my desktop USB wifi card is AC1900 so I get 1.3gbps speeds with that). Range is excellent however I only have a 2000sqft house so it's not huge. Overall excellent router and I highly recommend.

My wife picked this router up for me as a surprise and what a surprise it is! Straight out of the box and plugged in and hooked up, it worked without flaw. I have been wanting to use a VPN and with this router, the VPN resides within. This gives everyone on my network the privacy and security that everyone should have. My VPN service offers 6 devices that it can run on. With having 1 on the router, the only other devices that need protected is our family's cell phones and we still have two devices that can use the service. This is great for when we want to travel as we can use the VPN service on our laptops! This router has a triple network setup. You are able to use 2.4Ghz for those devices that are in the far corners of the house and use the 5.8Ghz for the devices that are closer to the router. We have three TV's, three cell phones, two or three laptops, 20+ hue lights, logitech hub, xbox, appletv and a few others that I can't remember, all running at the same time, with NO lag! Yes, this router is a little more expensive...but it is worth every penny. Spend a little extra and get this router for all your networking needs. It will not disappoint! REMEMBER: Your internet connection is only as fast and reliable as what your ISP connection is. This router will give you every bit of speed that your ISP allows you to have!

It is bit on expensive side (and bit large) but it is worth every penny. Our house layout is odd and only available spot for placement of our Internet set up is on one corner of 2nd floor. Our previous linksys router that was $150 couldn't cover the basement and we had constant connection drops on our 10+ Internet connected devices all over the house. I ended up setting up a new network just for the 1st floor with separate wireless router but that did not remedy the problem. I ended up pulling the trigger and bought the nighthawk. Ever since we replaced the linksys with the nighthawk, speeds increased, dropped connections stopped happening and we now have no need for the separate network on the 1st floor. What's amazing is, nighthawk signal can reach everywhere in the house including the basement! And no more complaints of buffering and dropped connection from family members! It's a great wireless router that will save you the frustration of slow speeds and connection drops.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my parents. They like to sit on our back patio during the summer and listen to music off my dad's Samsung tablet while using a bluetooth speaker. Unfortunately, our old router was an N300 that we rented monthly from Time Warner Cable. For those who don't know, it wasn't very powerful. That being said, they would have to leave the tablet in the house and put their music on, which also meant they had to put the speaker close to the house. With this router, that is not the case. Although the router is at a central point in the basement of the house, we can still get a decent connection at the end of our property which is about 250 feet away. We get a great signal in the house and on the patio. We even get a good signal by our fire pit which is about 100-115 feet from our house. This router is perfect for us. Not just for the tablet, but for watching Netflix or playing Xbox online, or even downloading music from iTunes, it does not matter what you're doing. The internet connection is perfect. Netflix literally loads instantly. The setup process was easy as well. 8 very detailed, very simple steps. It also gives you the option to use the Netgear Genie app for those less experienced when it comes to household networking. 5/5 stars all day long. See the photo I posted for a better idea of our layout.

So as an IT Engineer my apartment is an interconnected smart device shrine! I have so many wireless and smart devices, security system, ESXi server hosting game and media servers, website, etc.. The built in Dual-Band WiFi on my Aeris Time Warner cable modem had hit the wall with max devices reached, and max firewall rules.Maybe I have too much stuff? :p The setup of the Nighthawk was intuitive and very easy using the Netgear Genie application. I was able to connect the Nighthawk directly to my existing router. While setting up the Nighthawk I maintained the same SSIDs and passwords as my existing 2.5GHz and 5GHz connections from the Time Warner cable modem's AP. Once configured I disabled the WiFi on the Time Warner modem and turned on the Nighthawk. The result is my devices did not skip a beat, I didn't have to reconfigure any of them for the new WiFi, which would have been the hugest pain point here as I have so many devices I could be my own Best Buy. The ONLY annoyance I have with this device is you cannot access the internal router configuration from Ethernet. So my Desktop that is connected via Ethernet to the TWC Cable modem cannot log into the Nighthawk to make changes, even though both routers are interconnected with Cat6. A device, in this case my Desktop PC, needs to be connected to the Nighthawk's WiFi in order to log into the router and make settings changes. Not a huge deal, just slightly annoying because my Desktop does not use WiFi, so if I want to re-configure the Nighthawk router I need to use a laptop or other WiFi enabled mobile device and connect it to the Nighthawks WiFi. All in all a great purchase!

I had previously purchased an “equivalent” router from a different manufacturer, and after two months, out of frustration, I went shopping for a replacement. The Netgear X6 AC3200 was night and day different from the Linksys WRT3200ACM that I replaced. The fundamental issue with the WRT was that it consistently dropped internet connection when an android phone would connect to the network. I tried a lot of setting changes and found no resolution other than resetting the router several times a day. Now the X6 has been running for two weeks in the same network and hasn’t missed a beat. The router is in a utility closet and still has great signal quality everywhere in our home, and outside our home where it controls 5 outdoor smart light bulbs. I have roughly 30 devices connected to the network ranging from laptops and tablets to smart devices like Google Home and Smart light bulbs. The speed of the X6 has been fantastic and the setup of all of this was extremely easy. The Netgear app is also great. Very easy to access the network and see the traffic, or implement parental controls on a device. The 6 antennas of the X6 seem to give it an impressive range. I have no issues connecting from anywhere in a 2 story 3200 sq ft house. No need for an extender or mesh network. I highly recommend this router if you are looking for great range, great speed, connecting a lot of devices, and easy setup and app interface. The X6 has a great feature set at a reasonable price for what you get.

I've had many routers, this one is by far above most out there. As an I.T. Professional I get to work with many different product and Netgear has the reputation of being... Frustrating at times. This router is not one of those times. Out of the box, in default settings, it's a big approvement over most routers including the one that you're replaceing. You download their Genie app and follow the few instructions and you are good to go with a powerful router capable of doing wireless b/g/n/ac. I did not find any problem connecting with anything I have here at my home; Apple TV, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, Hue Lights, Mac, Windows. Distance didn't improve but the quality of signal did. The router itself has a very unique and futuristic look to it similar to a very large upside down spider. It has a VERY big footprint so make sure you have enough space for it. While the Genie App does assist with initial setup and quick access to basic features, if you want to truly see what you can do you're gonna wanna dial in to this router. If you don't know what I mean then it's not something you should be doing because while this router has some great features you can also completely hose your network and spend more time hitting the reset button and setting everything up over and over than enjoying the speed of this thing. Pros: Powerfull, Internal Software very robust, looks cool, all current WiFi frequency. Cons: HUGE for a router, Genie software is awful, even internal interface feels dated, most likely will not improve distance

I bought this one to replace my old aging R7000 series router since it has started having issues with the 5Ghz dropping. That router lasted me for about 4 years so it was time for a new one. It was able to handle about 25 connections on average and sometimes more as ranging from wired to wireless (printers, phones, laptops, etc.) So I needed a High performance Router. I tried the Asus AC3100 unit and it couldn't deliver even though it was receiving good reviews. Returned it and went with this router instead. Setup was straight forward and UI was a breeze since I was used to the functions of the R7000. I like the tri band feature so that I can spread out my devices over multiple frequencies. It picked up all my devices without any issues and I was up and running in no time. The Network Genie app is nice as well. Straight forward controls without having to log in to the IP address, if you're not comfortable. I would recommend this router to any power user that has a lot of devices on their network and do not want them to get dropped connections.

The Good: Finally I own a router (AGAIN) that gave me back the range I use to have with my original Netgear R6300 (and that I lost with the R6300v2 and R7000), now I have coverage to the farthest room in my house and stable coverage in my yard. Installation was almost uneventful (For whatever reason I couldn't connect to the internet until I upgraded the firmware, minor problem), so far I have not experienced any stability issues, and my devices are not experimenting disconnections. The Bad (and this is only a personal complaint that might be irrelevant to others): Who designs the cosmetics of this devices? A group of young gamers that think that everybody wants a router that looks like a giant spider upside down? why did not use regular removable antennas? (I am guessing to save) unfortunately I have no choice if I want the latest and greatest. Again this might be trivial for most, this is just a personal complaint. EXPENSIVE! I hope this helps to make up you mind if you are interested in purchasing

This router has exceeded my expectations. In short, this router enables my family to enjoy internet gaming and movies without having to constantly tweak router connectivity settings (which is fun, but only for a little while, and then it becomes a headache). I was debating between this and the ASUS RT-AC87U. I settled on the Netgear router because of the lower price and firmware stability. I set this router up, plugged in a USB 3.0 External drive, and I have had no problems streaming movies (Vudu or Netflix) in one room while my kids are playing Witcher 3 in the other room. The Netgear Genie software is a nice touch too-when I just want answers and don't want to tweak any settings. The Smart Connect setting parses wireless traffic using both 5 Ghz channels as a single connection. I was dubious about this and suspected I would need to have two separate 5 Ghz SSIDs along with the third 2.4Ghz SSID in order to get the connectivity I wanted (a dedicated SSID for the kids and a dedicated SSID for movies). It turns out that Smart Connect not only manages this transparently behind the scenes but it does it dynamically, so if the kids are gaming on multiple PCs and I'm not watching movies, the traffic gets parsed between the two 5 Ghz channels with no effort on my part. I haven't had to deal with any QOS prioritizing either which is nice.

I was looking for a stronger, faster, and overall more powerful router. The Nighthawk caught my eye but I was unsure if I wanted to spend over $200 on a router. I stepped into the local Best Buy and asked for assistance to get the sales person's opinion on what would be the next best thing. I explained to him the reason I was looking for a new router was that my service provider provided a modem with a built in router which was fairly slow and sent a weak signal. He recommend I go with a whole home WiFi system but they were a bit pricey, I already did not want to spend over $200 and when I let him know that he told me the Nighthawks were on sale and one of the best routers available. I took his word for it and purchased it. I immediately came home and installed the router. The instructions were very simple and the setup was very easy. It basically took over my preexisting network so all of my devices contacted automatically to the Nighthawk. My home is a 2 story town home with approximately 1500sq feet. I would have issues receiving a signal in my living room due to the modem/router being located on the send floor in the master bedroom. With the Nighthawk I now have ZERO issues, longer/larger area of WiFi coverage, and to top it all off the speeds are basically identical to the speed if the device was attached directly via Ethernet. I 200% recommend this router to everyone!

I got this router after having issues with my cable company issued router/modem combo. I have a ton of smart home devices and things connected to my WiFi, and I had reached a point where I couldn’t connect anything else, even if I tried via Ethernet. I went and bought this router, set it up (which was easy by the way), and haven’t had an issue since. This bad boy is packed full of goodies. It’s user friendly enough for a beginner, yet advanced enough to tweak all sorts of settings. The apps are useful for basic maintanence and settings, but the advanced settings, remote login, etc, I had to set up through the 192.168.1.1 portal. By far my favorite bonus was that it came the Disney circle built in. This is incredible for anyone that has kids. I would constantly catch my stepson playing on his tablet after bed time, and rather than have him surrender it every night, I was able to set up bed times that would shut down his internet. Being able to set time limits for all of his devices in one place was awesome, and the mothership integration (chore app) was a huge bonus. It made doing chores for him fun, and gave him the ability to extend his internet time using points he accumulated from doing these chores. I would definitely recommend this router to anyone.

I bought this to replace my AC1200, my teenage kids had enough of the slow response and movie pauses & game interruption's. I bought this after talking to the very knowledgeable Best Buy associates. They answered all my questions, with out having to ask someone else. Thing is I do this kind of stuff for work. I do a lot of research before I buy. So they passed my test. After bringing it home I couldn't get it to work. My computer is old an had to update a lot of stuff. Still no go. I called the company, took awhile but finally got through. They told me to take the unit back to Best Buy, Best Buy was very attentive to my needs an replaced it without question. I brought the replacement home hooked it up and that's all I needed to do. it took care of everything. (the updates helped too) This unit is in my basement I have a raised ranch house. I say this to tell you of how it covers the whole house and to the street which is over 300 ft away. It goes through the concrete with no problem. My son who has the PS4, and Xbox, use to complain, now he is amazed on how fast the games react. before their was the lag time. All my Wi-Fi using kids are happy, my wife is happy, I'm happy. As the sales associate told me this is gonna rock your world. I must admit it has. Now I hate it when I use Wi-Fi anywhere else. Hope this helps. I've read where some hate Best Buy. But I've only had great experiences with them. If something is wrong they correct it, right away. I can't say enough about how they treat me when I walk in the door needing to purchase electronics. They have my back.

Currently use this as an AP in the center of my house which is about 2200sqft. Great coverage through the house both the 2.4 and 5ghz channels with 0 dead zones, even through multiple wals/doors. One thing to take into consideration when purchasing this is the speeds it advertises. Connected to its lan port with a network card capable of running the 1gb (1000mbps) will achieve the listed speeds on your own network and give you the speeds you have to your house, on the Internet. With wifi it's the same. This has the capabilities to to run speeds over 1gb on its 5ghz channel, but on many devices the hardware falls short, leaving your wifi speeds less than your wired connections. For example, I have a Dell that has a 802.11ac capabilities and when connected to the 5ghz broadcast, I get speeds around 300-400mbps, whereas my Samsung laptop when connected to the 5ghz will get me about 200. This is due to the limitations of my nic card ( network card/computer built in wifi). So when purchasing this, keep in mind that you may have this really awesome highway (router speeds) but your driving it with a moped (your computer/phone/tablet) hardware limitations. Overall it's a great product for home or small business this looking for wide coverage.

I purchased this on sale for $208.99, which was a great deal. I was upgrading from a router about 10 years old that would occasionally have slow connectivity with cell phones (games), and my 2 Nest cameras would frequently lose connection for 30 minutes or so every few nights. This AC3200 fixed all of that though. I was extremely happy with the performance and would get between 100-140 mbps regularly (I have Xfinity 150 mbps service). BUT, I’m returning this model. I have always had trouble getting connection in the far corner of our bedroom. Our home is around 3,000 square feet, and I think the signal has to travel through too many walls/stairwells at that location. If it weren’t for that 1 area of home that would lose signal, I’d certainly keep this router for the long-term. (I have purchased the Google WiFi mesh system with 3 routers that now span our home and provide extra full coverage at the same mbps performance)

I would recommend this to a friend
