Fast Routers, Netgear Armor Protection is annoying

Like everyone can confirm, this WiFi 6 system is very fast. I can't give a 5 star for three reasons though: 1) The Netgear Armor protection. You have a one month free trial and then you have to pay a monthly fee if you want to keep it. The constant reminders and pop-ups on my phone to purchase the service is really annoying. 2) The Netgear interface. I'm personally not a fan of managing my routers on a phone app. Compared to the ASUS website interfact, the Netgear interface seems very basic. Some people will enjoy the simplicity but for others like myself, not so much. 3) The cost. I'm seeing very similar results using a RT-AX88U paired with a RT-AX86U in a AiMesh system. This Orbi is a Tri-Band Mesh and my set-up is a Dual-Band mesh so it isn't an apples to oranges comparison but I feel the performance upgrade of the Orbi isn't enough to justify the cost compared to the set-up I went with.

This system is amazing. The additional coverage and speed of the Orbi exceeded my expectations. Expensive, yes but worth if you are experiencing coverage gaps or reduced speed over an extender.

Outstanding router and satellite mesh network. I just moved into a new house that has 6700 sq ft on three levels and had the Orbi Router connected to a new fiber optic modem on the main level. Satellites were placed on the other two levels and gave perfect coverage in every corner of the home.

I was very skeptical on making this investment based on so many bad reviews. I was looking to replace my Nighthawk Router and access point. Set up, User interface, 2.4 Devices Not connecting etc. had me more than worried at this price point. I made the leap of faith and invested in the RBK853, Router and 2 Satellites. 1 Satellite is hardwired only because its far away and my house is wired for it. The other Sat is Wireless as intended. Set up recognized this with NO issues or Questions. From the moment I opened the box and began installation set up could not have been easier. The app set up was seamless, connecting the router to my provider (XFINITY) was seamless, changing the Orbi Network to my Current Network with password…. SEAMLESS!!! All 2.4 Nest Cams, Thermostats, Smart Plugs etc. connected like a charm as long as you use your old Wi-Fi Name and Password for the Orbi. Its been a week now and no dead spots, plenty of coverage, great App controls. It definitely nice to log in to the router direct via web page 192.168.1.1 etc.….and change and adjust every setting you want. The app shows a great network map, security options, speed test, etc. etc. etc. I have a large house with 30+ devices connected and growing every day it seems. I couldn’t be happier and view Orbi as a Minimum 5 year investment. I would 100% recommend this product.

My two story house with basement was creeping along on my old set up. After installing this I get consistent speed (blazing) anywhere in the house. For fun I headed outside and got about a half block away and still had a signal. Love it!! Set up was as simple as it comes.

I recently upgraded my home internet service to high speed OpticFiber and wanted a high speed WIFI system with sufficient coverage for the entire house. I highly recommend this system. The setup was very intuitive and the performance is outstanding. My family loves it!

    Amazing Performance and Coverage

I have a large, multi-story home and a family that loves to stream, game, and generally consume bandwidth. I recently upgraded to Gigabyte+ internet service. Despite having 3 Google Wifi units I struggled with coverage and poor speeds. So I decided to see if a Wifi 6 Mesh System really afforded a dramatic improvement in performance - both benefits were essential to me - better coverage and better speed. My first attempt involved an Arris Surfboard Max Plus system. I have reviewed that separately. Suffice it to say that neither the devices nor the app were ready for prime time. After about 8 hours of working with tech support I gave up. I chose the Orbi AX6000 largely on the basis of their strong track record with previous mesh systems. Setup was easy and quick. Downloaded the app and followed the step by step instructions which were simple and clear. Had the router and satellite set up and running (including firmware updates) in about 20 minutes. I watched from the app as the 30 or so devices across the home reconnected to Wifi. Interestingly, performance was blazing to start, leveled off for a while, and the improved to blazing after a couple of hours. I'm getting amazing speeds, routinely better than 450 Mbs/s at a distance of about 20 feet from the satellite and with a wall in between. It gets even better within one room of the primary router. The system has been perfectly stable since setup. And every nook and cranny of the house and back yard have a strong signal - dramatically better than my situation before. If I had the option of deducting a half star, I would because the app has some limitations. No parental controls (though modest controls are available using the web interface). Also, my connected devices are all visible under the connected devices tab but not under the network map. This is a nuisance that online forums seem to ascribe to an issue related to the app in handling SSIDs with spaces. A nuisance but doesn't really compromise me in any way. As noted, users have the option of using the app for convenience or a web-based interface (which functions well and I prefer when changing settings anyway). All in all, a really good purchase. Let's hope it's durable!

Costly, but you get what you pay for. I replaced an Orbi AC3000 (1 router, 2 satellites (RBK50/3). Send up simple. Better speed. Much better coverage. Continued NETGEAR Orbi dependability. Strongly recommend if you can part with the cash.

Although the OBRI Router and two satellites are a little more expensive than other mesh systems, it provides excellent coverage throughout and it was very easy to setup. Also like that there are four additional ethernet plugs on the back of each of the satellites.

These units are Awesome!.. my internet has never been the greatest but after adding these units to my life I can honestly say that there’s absolutely no buffering or dead zone in my residence, I have installed a solar Wi-Fi camera about 115’ away from my back door on a shed facing my house and it works great without any issues, I can now keep an eye on my back yard and dogs while I’m away, thank you NETGEAR for making this possible. You guys Rock!! Rene Bautista.

As an early adopter, I was forced to get the Orbi AX6000 system to try out and see if it was any good or not. As an owner of the previous Orbi system that experienced a significant number of issues over its usage, I was a bit hesitant, but the upgrade bug bit me, so I figured I would give it a try. Also, because I now have an iPhone 11 Pro Max and a laptop with WiFi 6, I thought it would be fun to test out performance. My initial experience setting up the RBK852 system went through a couple of hiccups, but after a power down of the router instead of just a reboot, things were back on track. After setting them up, both the router and the satellite updated their firmware and then I began testing throughput at various places around the house. Initially, I was very disappointed as I was only getting about half the speed that I got from the original Orbi system. The 850s were giving me about 170 Mbps throughput, but the 50s gave me around 340 Mbps. Not good! I figured it was due to there only being one satellite that I placed at the opposite end of the house from the router as my previous system utilized three satellites to achieve it’s high performance. So, I took the 850s offline and went back to the 50s and planned on returning the 850s. The next weekend, I decided to give the 850s one more go to see what they’d do and, lo and behold, after I reconnected them and started them back up again, I saw their throughput double to 340 Mbps, which is what I was seeing before from the 50s. Very strange, as I hadn’t made any changes to the 850s. No additional firmware updates and no configuration changes, but suddenly they were doing much better. Really weird, but I’m not gonna argue with success. So, I let them run for a week and everything was stable. Then I decided to go ahead and upgrade my Internet speed to see what the Orbi 850s could really do. I was on a 300 Mbps plan, but switched to a 1000 Mbps plan with AT&T fiber. After the switch, the router QoS speed test shows 970 Mbps, which is as expected, so it was time to test in my usual usage locations. Most of the spots I tested at were now seeing speeds of 450-500 Mbps which is a nice improvement, but a bit slower than I’d hoped for. Next, I tried both the iPhone and the new laptop within 3-4 feet of the router to see what they could do, but they both remained in the 450-500 Mbps range, which doesn’t make a lot of sense, but that’s what repeated testing has shown. At least I am getting better performance and the 850s are remaining stable for me. I had issues with the 50s where the throughput would slow down to about 10% of normal after a few days and would require a reboot to restore full speed. This went on for over a year, but finally through working with Netgear support they got it sorted out. So, in summary, the new Orbi AX6000 system is providing excellent coverage in my home even with only one satellite compared to the three that I needed before. It’s providing me with about a 33% speed improvement where I typically use my WiFi, and they have been stable, not requiring any regular reboots for about three weeks now, which is great! Currently though, you do have to give up family control (which I don’t need or use) and there is no option for Netgear’s Armor service, so the 850s are not as feature-rich right now as the older Orbi 50s. Something to think about before purchasing if you utilize those features. Because things ultimately worked out for the AX6000, I’m going to keep them and it’ll be fun to watch how they develop over time. But, these are not yet for the faint of heart and they are quite expensive when compared to WiFi 5 systems. To balance this review out, there are also a couple of things I really like about them, too. Because of the upgraded processor, they boot much faster. It only takes a minute or so for them to start up as opposed to almost three minutes for the previous Orbi’s. Also, now when you view attached devices, you can click on the headers to sort by IP address or device name. A feature that I’ve always wanted on the 50s. Sometimes it’s the little things that really are nice.

If you can get past the $1000 price tag, this mesh system will pay for itself in performance. I have a three story, 4,400 sf house, with lots of tile flooring and steel support beams. After installation of the Orbi Mesh I am measuring well over 600 Mbs speed in every corner of my home. When I originally tried the single route and 1 satellite system, there was a noticeable decrease in the basement. The extra $300 was well worth it. I paired the Orbi system with the Netgear CM1200 modem. Yes, this is a lot of over performance that Xfinity cannot even meet, but I am ready for whatever speeds will come in the future. Admittedly, the set up was a bit frustrating. It took a few resets as I live in an area with terrible cellular service and trying to connect the system to the Netgear server to register was a challenge.
