Great for large home

One year review. After trying some other options such as router extenders etc, this finally did the trick with my large home. I hard wired one of them and placed it in the center of a 3 story home and put the other one on the top floor. Every since I have installed these, I have had zero problems with wifi and I have a loaded "smart home". I also think they look nice.

With this product I don't feel as though like with many released in this generation that I am participating in a beta test. It simply works and it works very well. The app was a little finicky but once the router and satellites were updated everything stabilized. I've been running it for a few weeks now and the range is about twice as good as my nighthawk from 2017 and despite what some people have said in the past it appears to hand off wifi from one satellite to another very quickly. Overall this was a solid purchase.

I started my quest for better WiFi about 2 years ago when I purchased the Nighthawk X6. Worked well in most of the house but I just could not get more than 10% speed in the corners of the home, and made streaming impossible. I had an in home evaluation from Geek Squad and they recommend the Eero Home generation 2. I questioned them on speeds and range VS the Orbi and he stayed that he installed the eero in his home instead of any other system.
I decided to take the geek squad advice and purchase the Eero. He was able to match the sale price from the prior week, and recommend an Ethernet switch because the Eero only has one port. So now I’m over $400 for the system. I will say set up was simple and speeds from the base were great. The plug in satellite units only gave me 30-40% speeds and I found this unacceptable at this price.
I returned the equipment to the store within a week and tried purchased this unit. After setup and numerous tests it blew away the Eero. I am getting the same speeds everywhere in my home. Where the Eero gave me 25mbs the Orbi gives me 117mbs!!
No brainer, cheaper and the best.

I have gigabit internet with ATT. When I first connected it worked out of the box. 24 hours later it said no internet connection. Reboot then would work for a few hours. Modem was the 5286AC is DMZplus mode. Had att come swap modems to bgw210-700 set in IP pass through and router has been stable since. Disabled daisy chain since I only have on satellite. Disable 20/40mhz coexistence. Beamforming on. MU-MIMO on. Fast roaming on. 2.4ghz antenna power reduced to 75%. Current firmware is 2.3.5.30. I have a lot of HomeKit and streaming devices. 1700 sqft home router on lower level on one side of house. Satellite is upstairs in master bed. Typical speeds on iPhone XS Max are around 400mbps. Hardwire to Apple TV is 850 up 900 down. The units look good enough to put out in sight.

Very impressive. I have a 600Mbps down service from my ISP using an Arris DOCSIS 3.1 modem. From 15 feet to the satellite I am able to achieve speeds of 450 Mbps down wirelessly on my Chromebook with the 1733Mbps wireless backhaul to the satellite. Using Cat 5e cable in a wired backhaul to the satellite I was able to achieve 575Mbps down wirelessly with the Chromebook.
The satellite provides 4 easy to reach Gigabit LAN ports and the Router provides 3 Gigabit LAN ports. I have not seen any other Mesh router providing this many LAN ports. The others that did give you 1 or 2 LAN ports put them in a ridiculous almost unusable way like underneath the satellite. This was what made me choose the Netgear Orbi setup over the rest of the competition.
You can use an app to setup the Orbi router and satellite making it great for those that hate jacking with network stuff. But also allows the old fashioned way with the ip address 192.168.1.1. You also can just use www.orbilogin.com.
The router settings are robust enough for most any home user. (WAN/LAN configuration, QoS,VPN,AP mode, VLAN, port forwarding etc…)
SO WHY THE 3 STAR RATING?
I knocked off 2 stars for the design of this Orbi. For a system that you can place anywhere it should be almost fall proof. The Orbi is not designed well for its weight vs height distribution. The satellite is tall at almost 9 inches and wide at over 6.7 inches but not very heavy a little under 2 pounds. The good thing is you can place it pretty much anywhere you want and it still works well. Be careful when placing the Orbi satellite in a high traffic area. Any bump on the furniture it sits on will make it wobbly to the point of almost falling over. A hard bump would probably cause the unit to fall over. For the high price tag north of $300 I would expect a more stable weight and height distribution.

Wireless speed, coverage, and consistency MUCH improved over single AC3200 router. Wireless speeds average at or above purchased service of 200Mbps. Freezing and buffering of devices virtually eliminated. One satellite on third level of 3000sf townhouse well covers all levels. Orbi app provides insight to infrastructure and performance; hands-off operation. Location and appearance of units less of a performance factor and able to satisfy spouse’s concerns on aesthetics! Very happy!

I was hesitant at first as my NighHawk router was huge disappointment but after reading reviews I gave it a chance. Stop looking and just buy it. Setup was a breeze and this provides 5g signal on the floors of my 3k sq ft house and even the driveway. Very happy customer.

If you're looking for WiFi extensions throughout your home, this is the perfect product for you. The bundle offers clean, simple to operate and maximum performance for the price. Since setting this up, I no longer have issues with my WiFi dropping in certain areas of my home, nor do I worry about all the other devices sharing bandwidth, this will help manage all this without a problem. I've actually stayed connected about 4 homes over from my house without losing significant bandwidth. Awesome job Netgear!

Bought new orbi ac3000. My internet was slow and barely reached to one side of my house. Now my internet is fast and reaches everywhere and able to run as much devices as I want. My nestcam outdoor cameras were constantly off line or really slow to respond before the new orbi set up. I would highly recommend this system. You do need a good modem for them to repeat on for them to work excellent. Thanks

It works very well! I use it with my Apple time capsule. I turned the Wifi off on the time capsule and use it for backups only. I have the Orbi connected to the time capsule and it works flawlessly, I have great speeds and covered. I just wish it would let decide on which devices can be on 5ghz and 2.4ghz instead of automatically switching.

Typical two story home. Have been making wifi work in home with AirPort Extreme and an express but was really tired of the dead spots around the house. I decided to give It a try and it's actually worth the money. Incredible speeds anywhere I can go in the house. Easy setup as long as you do the updates manually. Very pleased with this product.

Pros
Sleek design with built in antennas allows better flexibility of placement
Pre-paired making setup easier
Excellent speed between router and satellite even at a distance
Separate antenna just for communication between router and satellite
Standard design makes administration easy if you are familiar with other routers
Management of all units is done through a single interface
Can be set up as either a standard router or as just the access point
Reliable. Has not required manual restarts
Cons
Initial page load time seems slower than expected
Speed drops significantly with distance
Light ring should have more use as most of the time it is off
Odd authentication errors and brief loss of internet occurs on connected devices
Startup takes a very long time making you unsure if the devices have paired
Color ring only shows status color for a very short time making it easy to miss
2.4GHz and 5GHz network cannot be named independently
Admin interface can be slow
Parental controls and advance features have not progressed in Netgear products
No way to mount on wall
Uses default password that is the same on all which could mean people leave their unit exposed
Firmware has no auto update option
The Netgear Orbi is a type of product that, while not new to the business world, is just becoming popular in the consumer world. Although it is not the first to bring mesh WiFi into the home, it is nice to see Netgear enter the space. Mesh WiFi can be complicated. One of the nice things about Orbi is the units can pre-paired meaning you don’t have to do anything except place them where you think is best and plug them in. The router and satellite will display a color on the ring on the top to indicate if you are within range although it would be better if the color was displayed longer if there is a problem. In fact, the color ring almost seems like an under-utilized artistic element. It would be nice if there were a way to keep the color ring on or use it for other purposes. The overall look of these devices is not like your standard network equipment. It is designed to look more appealing and sleek so you can place them where your WiFi will work best instead of where you are least likely to see it. Most people wouldn’t have a problem placing it on a counter in plain sight to get optimal signal.
These units come with three internal antennas with one for 2.4GHz, one for 5GhZ, and the other for communication between units. In most cases it says 2 units could handle up to a 4,000sqft house. Although this is true you might find speeds drop off quickly with distance due to the antenna design. The good thing is, if needed, more satellites can be purchased and added to the setup to improve coverage. Speed between the router and satellites, when you have a green signal ring, is very good. I would say even tolerant of unusual obstacles without affecting performance. In my house, I needed to put the satellite in a particular place between some of my WiFi products that require a very close WiFi to work properly. In order to do this, I had to place the Orbi satellite in a place that usually causes other WiFi setups to barely be able to connect due to poor placement. In the case of Orbi, the satellite has a strong signal back to the router and I still was able to utilize all 400mbps of my internet. It would appear that, at least in regards to the third antenna, the design is solid.
Using WiFi was generally good, but a quick drop-off in link speed was observed at distance. I have noticed that even though speed tests come up with max speed and low ping times it just seems like the first page of every website takes just a second or two longer than in the past. Almost as if the processor is a bit on the slow side compared to my old gaming WiFi router.
These units are not without flaws. The 2.4GHz and 5GHz names cannot be specified separately. This might cause your Apple devices get to get a little confused. I can’t confirm seamless roaming between units worked but it seemed I always had a strong signal, even though it wasn’t always the fastest. I did have two regular odd occurrences. At odd times all my devices will say there is no internet, even though I am connected to WiFi. By the time I log in Orbi to find out, everything seems to be working fine. I only experience this when using the Orbi WiFi. The other thing I have experienced is some devices, particularly those with Android, will at random say there is a problem authenticating and lose internet. Tapping the name of the WiFi corrects it but I have to do this quite frequently and as with the dropout issue, this only happens when accessing via WiFi on the Orbi. I am not sure if it is the devices or Android at this point but it is quite odd.
Administration is fairly standard using the tried and true integrated website setup that many routers have. The layout is standard Netgear so no surprises here. It has all the regular items and adds a small section in regards to managing the satellites. Otherwise it seems Netgear has not really pushed the boundaries of new interface design here with improved parental controls or even more granular features. If Netgear did nothing else, I wish they would add an automatic firmware upgrade option. In these times, considering how easily routers that are not up to date are being compromised, it seems like an oversight to depend on home consumers to manually update their own firmware. That said, if you have been happy with older Netgear administrative interfaces this won’t disappoint. In that respect, my main criticism is that the interface feels too slow for how basic it is.
Overall, the Netgear Orbi is a solid home mesh WiFi offering that sticks with nearly the same Netgear formula that those who use Netgear will know well. There is nothing jarring or groundbreaking here and, even with my large number of cons, none were significant enough to warranty saying these units are anything but a solid offering if you want to move into the world of home mesh WiFi the Netgear way.
