Up For A New Take On The Old West?

Tom Hanks has reached the status where any film in which he appears is worth a look. This is a visually beautiful, sometimes stunning movie to view. But, settle in and turn your gears down a couple of notches. This movie takes it's time to tell it's story. The pace, and quality reminded me of The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Bob Ford. An interesting tale of the West seldom told. Hank's is his reliable self. His character travels Western towns, gathering crowds to read, for a fee, the news of the world, where his customers are free to comment on the stories, as the stories are being read aloud. Hank's co-star, and she is, Helena Zengel, delivers a complex character, who has lost two families at her young age. She is believable, sad, fun, scared, desperate and full of wonder. The rest of the cast is a compelling mixture of good and bad Old West character's who must be having a ball playing their parts. Not exactly a "Tom Hanks Movie" as the story and scenery play the largest role. If you wish to view this film, best be prepared for a slow, but interesting tale of times we never knew.

Tom Hanks stars as a former Civil War veteran trying to make a living on his own by reading NEWS stories from around the Country to little towns or cities that he can travel to. On his way to one he discovers a turned over wagon with goods on its side. He ventures forward carefully, but has to get out as he sees something very disturbing to him. He then realizes that there is a little girl hiding in the bushes not far from it. He goes through the wagon and its contents to discover she was being brought to her next of kin. He must then take on the responsibility on his own to deliver the girl to her blood relatives. It doesn't work out when she is finally united with them, and Tom's character doesn't think twice about making her his own stepdaughter. It is a fabulous story, one of which will make you wonder as to how many of these stories did in fact happen years after the Civil War in America during the Reconstruction period. The movie looks and sounds utterly fantastic in UHD 4K. Get this one folks, you won't be disappointed in its storyline and acting.

I absolutely loved this Movie, it is set in the 1870s when one could still go around from Town to Town to earn a living reading the News to paying Audiences. 150 Years later now we can get all the News we want in our Smartphones. I liked very much how they were able to capture what it was like to live back in those Days, where the Town Roads are either Dusty or Muddy. Or when as soon as you step out of Town, it is either the open Plains or creepy Forest Paths which is often filled with danger. It is a pretty effective Western Adventure with nice Storylines about the Kid and the Captain's past. Decades later and Tom Hanks is still hitting the Ball out of the Ballpark in terms of Movie Quality. Helena Zengel was great as the headstrong, semi-wild Kid who was kidnapped by the Indians at a younger age and rescued later. A Must-Watch for me, one of 2021's Best Movies so far.

    A Great New Western

With so many westerns made in the early Hollywood years, it's probably hard to come up with things that haven't been done before, which might be why so few are made anymore. News Of The World manages to put a new twist on the genre with a unique story, while still including the favorite elements of the old western in it's own new way. This movie nails it on every level and is definitely worth adding to your collection.

It’s seems like forever since Hollywood has produced a great western movie. This is a really good movie. Set in Texas 5 years after the Civil War it illustrates how difficult life in that era was. A young orphaned girl raised by a Indian tribe is “Saved“ by a war Captain with lots of regrets. He tries to find a family for her but the bond between them grows. In reality she saves him and they find a new life. Great character development with action to keep it interesting. Really good acting from Tom Hanks and Helena Zengel. I’m not a “Western movie“ fan but this is a great movie.

News of the World: Hanks in a Western!

This revisionist Western offers Tom Hanks doing what Tom Hanks does best: creating a compassionate and believable character it's impossible not to root for. He plays Capt. Jefferson Kidd, a Civil War veteran who carries the news from town to town as kind of a traveling newspaper. He is imposed upon by the US cavalry to escort a young girl rescued from Indian captivity to family in one of the towns on his circuit. Along the way, while avoiding the dangers of a frontier absent law and order, the two learn to communicate and trust each other, forming a father-surrogate daughter relationship that feels genuine. Director Paul Greengrass usually tells modern stories ("United 93," "Captain Phillips") about global events that are ripped from the headlines. Here he tells an ambling tale of a man and girl delivering those headlines. Worth a watch.

A wonderful story set in Texas during Reconstruction after the Civil War. Tom Hanks gives a masterful performance as former Confederate captain, Jefferson Kidd, who agrees to deliver a young girl, Johanna, to her family. She had been captured by the Kiowa six years before and only speaks Kiowa. This is basically a road trip story with different violent adventures that happen along the way. The characters are nuanced and believable. The cinematography is stunning, and the movie is very satisfying on many levels.

Tom Hanks goodness and great 4k transfer. I wasn't sure what to expect with this film and I was pleasantly surprised with a great story and engaging cast. The 4k transfer is solid with great picture and sound. The vocals are clear and action scenes are nice with the sounds of gun fire what then do. Grab it during a sale since the price has been pretty high price for this release since it came out.

News Of The World is a wonderful little film and a fantastic addition to the western genre and might be perhaps Tom Hanks' best role in years. It's light-hearted, while at the same time extremely thrilling and poignant about people evolving and journalism. The 4K video presentation and the Dolby Atmos audio track are demo-worthy without being a big-budget action vehicle, and the bonus features, while short, are informative. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Blind buy, because Hanks... and a Black Friday sale. Took a chance, but it surprised me how much my girlfriend and I both enjoyed it. Excellent video and audio quality with the HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos. The 1800s Texas landscape was absolutely gorgeous. This is a film-lovers film, not mindless action. I loved the performances by the little girl, Johanna/Cicada, as well as Hanks. Very rewatchable film as well. Happy to have it my collection.

Watching News of the World on 4K was a delightful experience. The picture painted of the post Civil War time period, through this story and the fantastic cinematography, was riviting and visualiy breathtaking! Once again, Tom Hanks shows how much of acting treasure he is. A unique premise and an aspect of the time period that was unknown to me, but a rewarding discovery! Highly recomended!

An excellent movie. I'm not really a fan of old West movies, but this one was great. It covers several "issues" of life in past times and is not your basic conflict in the old West type of story. This story has actual relationships between characters, present and past, and serious situations. I can't explain w/o giving it away. A great story portrayed by a wonderful cast. See it!

This is a very good movie. Acting is great of course with Tom Hanks but the young girl (Helena Zengel) is very convincing. Good story line, scenery is to the time period and realism is believable. Shows the life in that time was not all that easy. Tom Hanks spreads the news to people from papers around the nation to people that don't know what is going on around the world. Highly recommend !!!

Saw this in theaters and loved it so much, I had to have it for my home movie collection. Think it's a fantastic movie, and of course, Tom Hanks is wonderful. The star of the show is Helena Zengel, who I thought was phenomenal! She played a fantastic, complicated character, and was great. You can't help but feel what she goes through.
