The mats are 0.5" thick. When I dropped a 70 pound biceps barbell on these mats there was a loud 'clang' as the iron plates hit the concrete floor of my basement. I then dropped the same barbell on other mats that I own that are 0.75" thick and there was a dull 'thud.' In my case, that loud 'clang' defeats the purpose of owning the mats, as I sometimes like to lift weights at night while other people in my house are sleeping, and I don't want to make noise. In addition, these mats have a triangular piece in the middle of each side's jigsaw pattern that is only compatible with this brand of mats. I wanted to match them up with my other mats, but that triangular piece made it impossible. That won't be an issue if you only buy this brand of mat, but it's something to keep in mind. That triangular piece is not visible in the pictures on this site, so it came as a surprise. They fit together fine. There was no odor. They may be a good choice if you're looking for something to exercise on top of while doing bodyweight exercises, or you have lighter weights that you'll be dropping on them.
