The Nextbase 422GW Dash Cam captures video and features Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities. It connects automatically to your phone. For greater storage capacity, simply add a plug-in SDXC card. You can add an additional camera for rear view recording. Features 1440p HD resolution at 30 FPS, 2.5” HD IPS touch screen, & 140 degree viewing angle. With a G-Sensor and SOS response service, this Dashcam adds safety features to your ride. Despite the lightweight package and integration into a small, attractive enclosure, this camera is feature packed. With built-in Alexa, this Dash Cam is a stellar performer at an attractive price! CONCLUSION: The Nextbase 422GW Dash Cam is a powerful performer, adding safety features and a video documentation to your transit. It earned five stars in my review and I highly recommend this Dash Cam.

I purchased it based upon reviews on web. HOWEVER, I have discovered several things that were not discussed in the review... 1. The battery is only good for 15 to 20 minutes, 2. It seems possessed- it turns on when it wants to. It might be something the installer did, I just haven't got it figured out yet. 3. The first day, it drained my car battery overnight. 4. The rear camera, when installed blocks most of the forward facing monitor. 5. I can't tell when it's recording or not. 6. I have thought I might return it to the store, but I want to make sure it's me.

I love how small this is (I have the 422 model), followed the limited yet “looked simple” instructions that are in the box. Couldn’t get the hard wire kit to work at all, so I just used the cigarette charger for now. Records went on when the car turned on and all was great. About 3 hours into my trip the recordings have stopped and the record button only worked for maybe one recording, if that. I reformatted the SD card and tried again. Worked for a few minutes and stopped again. For $250 you would think the least this thing could do is RECORD. The app, I couldn’t get it to update the firmware from the 9.6 to 16.5 as the app said it would do. After failure on both the app and the device I deleted the app and factory reset the device and start over Ron the beginning, NOPE! Now the app tells me to make sure the cam is on and close to the phone, it was on in search mode and 6” from the phone. Customer service, they close at 1PM Central time so now I can even call for help. Nothing on the internet....it’s a shame I really liked this Dash Cam otherwise. If it would have connected to the app and kept recording as I got it for. It doesn’t record over old recording either which is really dumb. If I don’t lock the video from 4+ hours ago, record over it.

The concept of what features & capabilities that this camera has is great. However the parking mode & the motion detection feature it had were malfunctioning. There are 2 ways to connect this camera to enable the parking mode & that is via a hardwire kit or connecting an OBD 2, as both methods provide a constant source of power for the camera. When I had it connected to the OBD & had the parking mode features on, the only time it would turn on is if I were to open the door to get inside & turn on the engine. After a week of having this camera before returning it, I noticed the motion detection feature had stopped working. Overall, this had been my experience with this camera.

This has been my first experience with any sort of dashcam and I couldn’t be happier with the Nextbase - 422GW Dash Cam. Since I had no prior experience working with dashcams, I was initially a little worried about how easy it would be to setup and install it in my vehicle but was pleasantly surprised to discover it wasn’t difficult at all. The instructions are very clear and I had no problems connecting the dashcam to my phone using the MyNextbase app. This is important if you plan on taking advantage of the Emergency SOS system but it should be noted that this is a subscription service and only the first year is included at no cost. The dashcam is very easy to use and I have no complaints about the video quality. The dedicated file lock button on the bottom is a great feature as it makes it easy to isolate and protect captured videos so they do not get overwritten. Another thing I really like is how it is compatible with Amazon Alexa which means various features can be controlled with your voice. The included mount works great and gives you the option to attach the dashcam to your vehicle via a suction cup or sticky pad. I went with the suction cup and haven’t had any issues with the dashcam losing suction and falling off my windshield. The only small complaint I have is with the included power cable. Unfortunately, it does not have any sort of pass-through USB port that can be used to also charge your phone while plugged in to the cigarette lighter power source. As a result, unless you have another one of these ports easily accessible in your vehicle (which I happen to have), you won’t be able to simultaneously charge your phone or any other device while the dashcam power cable is plugged in. Overall, this is a great dashcam and a wise investment if you do a lot of driving and I highly recommend it!

I first purchased a cheap no-name $25 dashcam that I found online. It did the job, but even at 1080p, the video quality looked like it was shot on a 1980s camcorder. After being involved in an accident where I was sideswiped, the video footage instantly proved I wasn't at fault. After the accident, I decided that I needed a camera that had better video quality. The instructions state to charge the camera for two hours before installing it. I did so and then chose my spot on the windshield for it. Installation was a breeze and it took me about three minutes, including hiding the power cord. The power cord is plenty long enough for however you need to route it. I had two options to plug into. One at the bottom of the dash and another in the center console. I chose to route my wire to the center console. I tucked it behind the A-pillar, behind the glovebox and back to the center console. The only part of the wire that is visible is about one inch where it plugs into the camera. I downloaded the app, which has a lot of nice features. Initially, there was a firmware update for the camera. I simply downloaded it on my phone and it applied it to the camera. You are able to see a live view on your phone of what the camera sees any time it is powered on. You can also view the library of saved videos on your phone. This is extremely convenient as you don't have to remove the SD card and load it on a computer every time you want to review footage. As far as image quality, it couldn't be better. It is crystal clear and like watching a 4K TV. The camera also has a touchscreen which works very well. It doesn't take a hard press to push a button, so you don't have to worry about the camera moving and readjusting it every time you want to press a button. There is a large button on the bottom under the screen so that you can manually save a recording. This is nice so that you can capture something like being cut off in traffic, or if your camera captured an accident in front of you. The screen also has a great resolution. The only drawback of it is that it is very reflective. As I'm driving, I can see out of the corner of my eye the trees passing by on the screen. After a couple days of having it, I started to not notice this as much. The camera has GPS and an SOS feature. You can set it up to have the camera email someone you choose in the event of an accident. They will get a video and a location on a map of where the accident occurred. You can choose to have the GPS coordinates and speed displayed on the video that is captured if you wish. It is always recording the telemetry even if you don't have it displayed. When you review a video, you can watch it along with a map of where the video was recorded. Now, for some things to consider. I fully charged the camera before installing it. I have "parking mode" enabled. This allows the camera to capture things even when the vehicle is off. So, if your car is hit while parked at the grocery store, it can capture what happened. I believe because I have this enabled, it drains the battery very quickly. So much so that the battery is constantly dead. Unless I take it out and charge it, it will not have any battery power left by the time I park. This makes the parking mode feature useless for me. The shock sensor (G sensor) is very sensitive. It is set off by me simply opening the door and getting in the car. This then locks the video since it believes there was an accident. There is a feature to adjust the sensitivity of it, however, I believe that it is only for parking mode. I drive a 2014 Genesis Coupe Rspec. The Rspec suspension is a little lower and a lot stiffer than most cars. Because of this, even a small bump in the road sets the camera off and locks a video. I had one video locked simply because I made a right turn at about 20 mph. This can be frustrating, because you will have to constantly be deleting locked videos of normal driving. When a video is locked, you will hear a sound from the camera, letting you know that it captured a video. The camera has Alexa built in. I was looking forward to this, because I would be able to just say, "Alexa, turn on the living room lights" before I get home. However, from what I have seen, it just routes to my phone, it doesn't come through the camera. If that's the case, then what's the point? When I'm driving, I can't hear responses from my phone. I'm sure that this is not how it's supposed to work, but I haven't been able to find another way to do it. With all of that said, this is a great camera. They even have a few options to add a rearview camera to it as well. The ability to review, share and delete videos right from your phone is a great feature to have.

The first DashCam worth permanently installing

I, like most people, have a daily commute to and from work that is a pain in the neck. I rack up a lot of miles on my car, and statistically I am bound to either witness an accident or God-forbid be involved in one. The daily commute can be a crazy thing, many people are zombies and not paying attention. Many are on their phones, either talking or texting - bottomline they are distracted. If you want to see the height of crazy driving check out the dashcam videos online taken in Russia. Ironically as crazy as they are, it was those videos that convinced me to get myself my own dashcam. I’ve had a couple of dashcams that were very inexpensive to purchase. Those were complete wastes of money. The video they recorded was washed out, low in resolution, and many times just didn’t work. Like all things, you get what you pay for. Those were a waste of money. The answer to those bad experiences is what I’m here to write about. The NextBase 422GW dashcam, which was recently reviewed by a premier tech magazine taking the #1 spot. The NextBase 422GW is a welcome surprise in respect that it does everything I wanted a dashcam to do. And it does it well, without any fuss. It was super easy to set up and get going. I literally had it operational within 10 minutes of removing it from the box. Setup was simple, with the usual first-time powered on process that steps you through until configured. That gets you going, and you could remain that way indefinitely. However there is a full configuration menu system that allows you to personalize and set your specific preferences. You don’t have to do this, but being a bit geeky I played around with all the settings. And this dashcam has a boatload of features and settings! I’ll cover some but not all in this review. There’s just too many! What I expect in a high quality dashcam is reliability (it needs to work every day, without fail). It needs to take high quality video (and audio), so that in case of an accident or incident the video can be examined closely to look for small details. At 1440 30FPS the detail is outstanding, and you zoom into the recording you’ve made with the excellent NextBase Player software that you can download for free from the NextBase website. What I liked: The 422GW features an HD camera capable of recording video at 1440P at 30FPS. The quality at the highest setting was incredibly good, better than any dashcam I’ve ever own. It’s on par with the video on my cell phone, which says a lot! But what it has that my cell phone doesn’t is intelligence built-in for the purpose to take video all the time and do it in a structured way. I’ll explain shortly… The all-glass, F1.3 coated lens has a 140 degree viewing angle. It has a very minor fisheye effect, which was fine and expected. A GPS is built-into this dashcam, which worked great! It captures details of where you are as it records. It can capture, if you want, your location and your speed. These are configurable, but if left enabled will provide exceptional evidence on your behalf if you need to prove where you were at the time of an accident or incident. The build quality is extremely good, best of the bunch that I’ve handled in stores. It’s solid, and gives the impression that only the best materials were used and it will last a long time. Truly I’ve had other devices fall off my car dashboard and fall apart. This one will likely never fall off (due to the outstanding mounting system), but even if it does it is unlikely to be damaged. So if you are in an accident this was built to survive a heavy hit. That’s peace of mind! It has WIFI and Bluetooth connectivity, and an app that allows you to broadcast the video in realtime to your phone or tablet. The WiFi is for the connection between your mobile phone and the dashcam. The Bluetooth is for the connection between the dashcam and your car stereo. Setting up the app wasn’t difficult at all, taking just a few minutes to complete. The GW422 also features Alexa integration. What that means is that the dashcam becomes another device that Alexa can control. If you have created an Alexa ecosphere already, this will be a natural for you. The NextBase app interacts perfectly with the Alexa app, giving you access to all dashcam functionality while still being able to control your other Alexa compatible devices. At some point the whole Alexa thing gets a bit much for me, but I have to say it is a good idea to have voice controls in the car so you can keep both hands on the wheel. Plus there’s an SOS feature in the App that will notify emergency services to your location in case of an accident. Similar to OnStar in GM cars, but without the monthly fee. But honestly once I configured my dashcam and mounted it in my car - I don’t mess too much with it. A dashcam is a set a forget device for me at least. It’s there doing its thing, unobtrusively until something bad happens. There is another NextBase model one up from the 422, which features a bigger touchscreen. My eyes are getting old and my fingers are meaty and not as stable as they once were. More screen surface area to click on would be nice, but once you know where to click on the screen it has been a breeze to use. Also with the app there is integration and connectivity to your cell phone so you can view the video that way. NextBase really did a great job loading this product up with every useful feature. You can either take advantage of them all, or just use the basic recording functionality. At a minimum you will get outstanding video quality. The mounting system is stellar! There is both a permanent 3M mount, and a temporary suction-cup type mount. Both latch onto the camera with an ingenious connection system that uses a super strong magnet to make connection and disconnection simple without messing with rewiring. The magnets are strong in fact that I discovered them to hold tighter than the suction-cup! Several times while attempting to remove just the dashcam from the mount the magnet held with such strength that the suction-cup gave up first. It can be frustrating until you figure out a method to separate the two. This won’t be a problem if you use the permanent mount of course. The positives outweigh the negative and I give it a thumbs-up. As mentioned earlier the video quality is outstanding, both day and in the evening. What I did discover is that during daylight hours the 1440P 30FPS provides stunning video. When it gets dark I found the 1080P 60FPS to be a better option to reduce graininess and increase light sensitivity. It would be nice if the camera could be configured to do this automatically. The 422 does not use IR front facing LEDS like some dashcams do. Which is fine, because those are mostly useless and a gimmick unless something is really up close. I found the the nighttime recording to be very good to excellent within the area of your headlights. But at the periphery the video gets dark quickly and you lose detail. Through post processing you can boost the contrast and brightness if you need to. But otherwise I’m more that satisfied with its low light performance. The things I didn’t like. There’s only one... The audio. I found the audio quality to be horrible, and blown out with tons of clipping. My situation may not be the norm since I have the dashcam in my convertible, so the unit is subjected to wind. Not that dashcams need to excel in audio, but there’s no reason why they shouldn’t. Unless I received a defective unit, the recording quality is terrible. I would love to hear from NextBase as to why this is, and if I can do something to solve this problem. For those of us that drive a convertible, how do we get decent audio? There are no controls over audio in the setup, just ON/OFF. NextBase - are you listening (pun intended)? Summary This is a fantastic dashcam, I can’t tell you how far superior it is to every other dashcam I’ve ever owned. It is chuck full of features, many more that I haven’t even covered in this longggg review! I highly recommend this unit to anyone looking for a quality dashcam. I also highly recommend buying a large capacity microSD card. At a minimum get a 64GB. The recordings will loop, so it isn’t like you’ll run out of space ever. But you will overwrite video once you’ve hit capacity. In my case I put in a 256gb card, and set the recording intervals to 3 minutes each. I like the option of retaining video clips, particularly when going on a scenic drive. Buy this model or the one above it if you want a bigger screen and a slightly better lens with built-in polarizing filter. You won’t regret it! Also check with your insurance company, some are giving discounts for installed dashcams. Now just to figure out the audio issue, and I’d love to obtain the rear view camera that integrates simply to this camera. Such a well engineered device. Thank you NextBase - you have a winner!

This was my first experience with a dash cam and overall the Nextbase 422GW was (overall) a win. First read the entire instruction manual… If possible, update the firmware from a PC, trust me. If you can set up in your vehicle (after charging for two hours…again read the manual) close to your home and wireless signal. Installation was pretty simple; you have two choices suction cup or sticky backed magnet mount. The footprint of the camera is pretty small so it shouldn’t interfere with your field of vision. I have read many reviews of I-Phone users having set up issues, I use android and experienced no problems except slowness so I opted to do what I could via PC. The important features as I refer to them are as follows: 140° viewing angle 1440p video Built in G sensor – file backup Parking protection – records if your car is hit while parked Emergency SOS – alert service in case of an accident and you can’t respond Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled – auto synchronize files These are the nuts and bolts which all seem to work well. Video quality and clarity are very good, both during the day and night. You can identify plate numbers, car types colors and faces captured in the video. While there are limits this unit will do what is needed for the circumstances. This is not a $$$$ home surveillance system. I also like the ability to adjust the sensitivity of the sensor that activates recording, I used medium. I also like the ability to choose recording lengths however do you really want to short the time to record after all isn’t the reason we buy this is to record what “might” happen? I want all the footage I can get. Which leads me to the final thing, the optional mirco SD card slot. Do yourself a favor and buy a quality card with enough space and rated for high usage. Nextbase should include such a card because like I said isn’t that why we are buying this? Some of the cons but for me not deal breakers: The software is hit or miss buggy, support is not exactly helpful. The charging cable is a USB-B, who uses this any longer? Alexa use is not seamless but don’t we all gave google, alexa and siri on our phones? Polarizing filter not built in, the next model up has this an worth it IMO. No Micro SD card included. Overall at this price point I would recommend this for anyone wanting/needing a dash cam. I would however choose the next model up for a few dollars more to get the polarizing filter.

One advantage of a dash cam is having an objective witness in case of an accident or unjust speeding ticket. There are a couple of great dash cams out there, but Nextbase stands out from the crowd with its technology and ratings. Setup of the 422GW was easy; just make sure you charge the camera for at least 2 hours before using it. I would recommend that you purchase a U3 micro SD card to ensure the best possible overall performance. While driving at dawn, I noticed a slight glare from the windshield, but it wasn’t intrusive. I have read that the 522GW model comes with a UV filter, but I don’t believe this is necessary based on my experience. Picture quality during the daytime was perfectly clear, but once the sun went down, I noticed the image did become a little bit grainy. I did not test the parking features, so I cannot say how they perform. Pros Great picture and recordings Two options for windshield mount (suction cup or 3M VHB mount) Alexa enabled Easily accessible button on bottom of screen to protect a video from being overwritten Cons Uses Mini USB instead of USB Type-C or Micro-B Doesn’t display a percentage for remaining battery life If you are looking for a compact dash cam which will log your speed and direction, this is a great choice. The 522GW, in my opinion, is worth the extra money if you want UV filters and a larger touch screen.
