This is a great dash cam. It has all the features I’d want and more. I won’t go into great detail as others already have but one feature I really like is parking mode. If someone bumps into your vehicle, the camera starts recording so you’d have a chance of seeing who did it.

. . . be sure to check the field of view before mounting the camera. The glue on the 3M strips are really hard to remove once you install.
The camera works nicely and I hope this works as advertised in the event that I need it. We'll see.

This camera takes very clear video, I’ve played it back on my laptop & on the camera itself & it’s great. I had resolution set on 1080, you can also set it to 1440. The camera looks good too, it’s compact, no big bulky unit in your window & it looks expensive. Touch screen has all the features & settings & you can set them to your liking. Some of the settings are exposure, video length, park mode, be careful with that one, every little bump sets it off. Set up was very easy it paired with my iPhone right away through the app.I couldn’t get it to pair with my iPad. You will need a micro sd card & you can manually protect the recordings. There is an emergency sos feature also which is free for a year. You can attach it two ways, one is directly with a mount or attach the mount to a clip & go suction cup. I use the suction cup because it’s easily removable. The camera attaches magnetically to the mount & really stays in place. There’s a magnetic cover to put over the camera attachment when not in use. What I didn’t like & the reason for the four stars is the sd card slot, it was hard for me to get the card to stay in especially with any fingernails at all, I even tried a coin & still couldn’t push it in. It was a bit frustrating. Also I know electronics get warm when used but this gets hot especially if you forget & leave it on while your not in the car. So hot you can’t touch it. The app saves the videos too but I didn’t see a delete all feature but it may be there I’m still learning. Other than those little quirks though it’s a great camera with a fairly long battery life.

Solid feature-full dash cam with GPS/Accl

My dad has been preaching the virtues of having a dashcam in his vehicle. Of course he likes rocking his cheap $50 dashcam, which while produces decent video, does have issues with clarity. I finally decided to jump in, but decided to go a bit higher end that a very base dashcam. The Nextbase 422GW is a high resolution, fully featured dashcam and hit my shortlist of features I had as must haves.
Specifically where the 422GW excels in my opinion is the core competencies of dashcam information. From this very small device you get 1440p video (2440x1440), which produces an image that makes it easy to pick out license plates if they get close enough to matter. You also get a very precise 10Hz GPS and constant coordinates, speed, and accelerometer logging. The full breadth of this information is on display if you download the Windows/Mac software from their website which includes integrated mapping and accelerometer/speed charting. While the smartphone app is extremely useful, I found the amount of data on the desktop app to be awesome.
The dashcam is super solidly built, with several mounting options. I chose the suction cup mount simply because I was due for a windshield replacement next week after an errant stone chip the day before I got the dashcam. I was able to mount it up and away from my view around the rear view mirror. From there I was able to tuck the cable in the headliner of my Ford Focus and run it down the passenger side A-piller. From there, I tucked it inside the rubber seal until just behind the passenger seat. I then ran the cable under the seat rails and to the center console’s power jack. All in all, the cable was totally hidden from view, which made it a nice clean look.
The camera is smart enough to monitor for motion and use the accelerometer to determine when a video is worth saving. For instance, hard braking will trigger a protected video, as will some spirited driving. It will also monitor while you’re away for accelerometer events in case you’re bumped into at the parking lot. You can protect any video snippet just by hitting the lower wide button. It will then ensure 20 seconds prior and 10 seconds after the press are preserved. This might be even more useful if you have the optional rear camera which can connect to the mini-hdmi port on the right side.
Another cool feature is the dual resolution videos. You can keep a larger portion of videos archived using a much smaller format than the high resolution videos. These are automatically created during the video recording process. You can turn this feature off, but it’s useful when archiving videos as 1 minute is only about 10MB, vs the high resolution being around 100MB a minute. Essentially a 32GB sd card will fill up in a matter of hours, so if you like to keep a full record of certain trips, you’ll want to ensure to use the smaller format.
The GPS is super useful, as seeing a map, coordinates, and speed data can really make the difference. I found it useful just looking at my own driving. At minimum it’s interesting data, but in the event of a collision, could show that you were driving at a safe speed.
The 422GW also has Alexa integration. I’ve enjoyed this feature on my Ford’s infotainment, but I have to trade it for CarPlay. WIth this device, I get the benefits of Alexa while retaining my infotainment’s CarPlay feature. The bluetooth connection has worked great when I went to use it, but I’ve noticed occasionally it will disconnect, then reconnect making an annoying BT connection noise when it does. This may just be an anomaly, but I thought it worth noting.
The app connects over bluetooth for Alexa/basic info. If you want to view videos it creates a WiFi access point to connect to and then access videos directly from it. This works surprisingly well, and you get a decent viewer right on the iPhone. Keep in mind, that while the camera does have a built in battery, its battery life in this mode is abysmal. You’ll want to charge it via USB port or battery bank if you’re sitting down after a long drive.
There is an SOS feature built in as well. I didn’t set this up, as while it does have a 1 year trial included with the camera, after that it is $4.99 a month. However if I was going on long trips or commuted for work in non-busy areas, I’d probably pony up for it, as it can alert others, and emergency responders of your location via your smartphone. Essentially if it detects a high-g event it will cooldown for 10 seconds, wait for 30 seconds looking for normal motion, if none occurs will then give 120 seconds for a cancellation before alerting about the accident. You can cancel it, but if you were incapacitated, it would ensure that you could be found quickly. This really is a life-and-death feature. Like I said, if you’re often driving at night or for long distances in areas with sparse population, I’d highly recommend this as a just in case feature.
A couple interesting notes for this product: The company Nextbase really target’s the UK as it’s home audience, so defaults on the camera are the UK region, so be sure to select the US at start up. It gets the imperial system settings right for this region, so no weird configuration is necessary. Nextbase’s app is ok, but seems to lack some polish - and as others have said, does advertise other products. Also the choice of power cable is interesting: Mini-USB - whose hit its stride in the mainstream back in the mid-00’s and has been abandoned for more ubiquitous Micro-USB, and now USB Type-C.
Overall, if you’re looking for an excellent dashcam, that provides tons of data and useful features (like Alexa/quick video downloading to your phone, GPS/accelerometer) then you’ll be quite pleased with the Nextbase 422GW. It’s an investment, but well worth it if you commute daily.

Pretty Good, Room For Improvements

This is my first dashcam and the first review of one. I do not know the entire pros and cons on what makes a really good dash cam. But I will try my best to describe my experience with it.
Information about this dash cam can be found at Nextbase’s website. The cam does not include a memory card so you’ll have to purchase one on your own before using it. It uses a microSD form factor and Nextbase has documented their recommended minimum specs/performance from the card for reliable use.
I chose to purchase a Samsung Pro Endurance 64GB microSD as the storage of choice based on recommendation from “Car Cam Central” on YouTube. If the card of choice isn’t to your liking, ensure that you get one that is specifically designed for dash cam or security cameras. Some companies do not provide warranty coverage for using the card in these devices so tread carefully if you buy something else.
=post draft remark=
After composing the 1st draft and modifying from there, Nextbase has shipped out 32GB SD cards to TIN reviewers. This is a small miss by Nextbase but it should not affect the general review. While Nextbase does recommend their own branded SD cards (who doesn’t?), people have their own preferred SD card brand and storage capacity. Given how late into my review this came to be, I will not make any revision using the Nextbase SD card.
===============
Installation can be done using one of two methods: suction cup or adhesive. I chose to use the suction cup as it allows me to use the cam on another car. The power cable plugs into the car’s cigarette lighter and it provides a 5v 1.5a power to the device. There’s a possibility you could use your car’s built in USB cable but I do not recommend it unless you know its power output. The cam uses a mini-USB connection, which is a major disappointment given how USB-C is a better and more future-proof connector. Just make sure to keep the included cables around where you can easily find it. Most devices that do not use a USB-C connector tend to have a micro-USB connection, which is a bit different from mini-USB. Routing the cable took some effort and you’ll have to improvise on that. In the end, I used some clear packing tape to keep the power cable tucked away at the side of the windshield and route it down from the top of the dashboard. The cable length is long enough to accommodate almost any kind of wire routing you have opted for. Once plugged in, the camera will automatically turns on as soon as you fire up the engine (or maybe just the battery is enough but I did not check). As for mounting the camera itself, it’s held in place by a strong magnet. On one hand, it allows you to take the camera off the mount should you need to take it with you. On the other hand, there’s a chance that the camera itself could move while mounted. Although through my test and driving runs, it held stable and steady onto the mount itself. So perhaps it’s a moot point. At the very least, taking the dash cam with you without having to undo the mount itself is a good plus.
The camera has a 140° field of view and easily captures all the front view of the vehicle. With 64GB of capacity storage, the manual indicates 480 minutes of recording, or 8 hours worth. Since receiving the dash cam, this took a while to fill up. And one of the things I wanted to find out is how it handles a full memory card. When capacity reaches its limit, the oldest recorded video file is deleted.
First time setup is easy and takes only a minute to go through to get it up and running. As a precaution, I have the camera charged up before installation to ensure a smooth first run. There is an option to have the microphone on (default) or have it off. As a privacy concerned individual, I have opted to have the microphone off. The benefits of having it on is to hear possible outside noise/audio in the event of an accident or incident. On the flip side, it also records whatever music you were playing as well as conversations you have with others (or yourself). Setting the microphone recording on or off is entirely personal preference. And I cannot say what the audio quality is due to having the microphone off. (Sorry.)
Video quality looks quite good for 1440p resolution and I do not have any trouble seeing details, especially for license plate numbers. The dash cam records in 1 minute segments to keep recorded file size manageable. Segment size can be adjusted to 2 or 3 minutes but it’s best to keep the default of 1 minute segments. By default, the videos themselves contain GPS coordinate information as well as calculated driving speed based on GPS movements. Be aware that while having dashcam videos can prove useful, it can also backfire on you due to these information. These two information can be turned off, if you feel it reveals too much information. Videos can be viewed via their “MyNextbase Connect” companion app on a smartphone (or similar), connected via USB on a computer, or through a memory card reader. Linking or connecting to the dash cam requires you to stop or pause recording to go into the Settings menu and begin the link process there. It’s a strange way of doing this for connecting the cam via Bluetooth. It’s one of a few quirks I found while using the cam.
Another odd quirk is that it uses WiFi to transfer data. Viewing past recordings cannot be done unless it connects to your device via WiFi. It’s a strange system since it uses Bluetooth to link with the companion app. Yet it uses WiFi to list videos, show its preview, or view the stored videos. And if you happen to want to view your past recordings, the camera stops filming. It’s a bit of a disappointment that I cannot do some simple things without it trying to switch to WiFi mode.
Lastly, updating the firmware on the device is not as smooth or fluid as I’d like. Upon linking the cam with the smartphone app, I was notified of a new firmware ready to download and update. At my convenience, I started the update process from there. The cam tells me that it will automatically reboot when it’s done updating or uploading the firmware. But it never rebooted. I sat waiting for a good 15 minutes until I gave up and plugged the USB cable in. The cam lights up and starts the firmware update process. It’s one thing to notify a firmware update. But it’s another to not prompt or warn users that a constant power source is required. Both the manual and their firmware updating document describes updating through using a SD card or through USB using their ‘Player’ software. But makes no mention of updating from the smartphone app that provided no warning. Since this is out of the ordinary and I ran into trouble here, minus point.
In terms of performance, the dash cam did what it’s intended to do. It captured driving footage as I drove around the area and video quality and playback appear smooth. While the cam itself is limited to 30fps in 1440p resolution, dialing the resolution to 1080p would enable 60fps capture. This would make the video itself smoother but at the cost of video resolution and details. So I have opted to leave the recording resolution at 1440p to capture as much detail as possible.
Overall, I think the 422GW works pretty well. There are some odd quirks that makes me wonder why Nextbase designed it this way. But as long as you know them beforehand and know how to work around them, the cam is fine as is. As for value, given that there are so many dash cam out there, from various manufacturers for every price point there is, it’s hard to determine if what you’re purchasing is worth the cost. I cannot make a judgement because of this, for I know little of this market segment. But having reviewed this make and model, chances are I may look at Nextbase’s offering if I’m in the market for another dashcam.
Verdict: The choice is yours to make.
PS: I think all dash cam manufacturers should have anti-reflection and polarizing filter built in or included. This model doesn't have either but their next step up model, 522GW, has a polarizing filter built in.

One of the reasons I purchased this camera was because of the app support. Streaming the camera to the phone sounds great. This feature however does not work. Even after returning the camera for a replacement, it still didn't work. The battery also stopped charging after a week of use and the replacement camera had the same issue. I spoke to Netbase's customer care who couldn't help and recommended I return the camera. Disappointing.

Sleek and Portable Dash Cam with Tons of Features

Up until now I've never used a dash cam. With the ever increasing traffic in Los Angeles and the sheer amount of new drivers on the road, trying and owning this product couldn't have come at a better time. Much to my surprise, the dash cam was incredibly easy to install. Before I go any further, if you end up purchasing this cam, do yourself a favor and please visit Nextbase's website. Locate the model of your dashcam, and you will be greeted with several guides and videos on the installation process. I didn't go the "hardwire" kit route. I simply used the included car adapter. It was much easier than expected. I mounted the dash cam with the included GoPro Mount on the passenger side right behind my rear view mirror and was able to neatly tuck the wires into the roof lining and down to the weather door seal. You can't see any wires around the dash cam.
In terms of features this thing is jam packed. It includes a 2.5 inch IPS touch screen which registers your touch very well. I paired it with a 128gb micro sd card (not included). The cam takes 30 fps of 1440p or 60 fps of 1080p; bottom line this thing takes VERY high resolution footage. Download the nextbase app to your iOS or android device and you'll be able to instantly send all recorded footage from your cam to your phone. I was really impressed at how easy this was. You also have the option of connecting the cam to your computer to download the footage. I can't stress enough how crystal clear the video footage is. It also records all of the audio during the trip. Another pretty neat feature is the inclusion of Alexa. I was able to use alexa to play music, get weather updates, or location information.
Overall, I'm very impressed with the high quality quad HD footage taken by this very small and sleek dash cam. It's extremely portable, good looking, takes amazing footage, allows for seamless footage transfer right to your phone, and has a ton of customization options. So far this has given me such a piece of mind in case I were to get into an accident. It also makes me want to be a better driver as it's recording everything - whether the accident was my fault or someone else's. This has become a staple in my driving routine.

Bottom line: The NextBase 422GW dashcam is packed full of features that help it stand out in an increasingly crowded product category.
Pros: Click & Go mount; easy to operate; automatic syncing to phone; lots of other features
Cons: Camera design; microSD card difficult to insert/remove
Review: This is my second dashcam, and the NextBase 422GW (herein, NB) solves a lot of issues that I encountered: specifically, taking the camera down and retrieving the recordings.
Installation of a dashcam is a relatively straightforward process, but where the NB really excels is the Click & Go mount. Unlike a regular mount that just holds the dashcam in place, the Click & Go mount integrates the power circuitry into the mount (i.e., the power cable attaches to the mount). The NB then connects to the mount via magnet, which aligns the power circuits. The magnet does a really good job of holding the NB to the mount, but it’s still very easy to detach the unit if you want to pull it down to review footage. I can’t overstate how valuable this is compared to having to disconnect the cable and then fiddle with the mount to get the unit down. It’s a major plus for the NB, which also comes with an adhesive and suction cup plate.
My second favorite feature is that you can pull your video off wirelessly from the NB onto your phone. The NB can connect via Bluetooth or your phone’s WiFi for faster data transfer. Once you have the app installed, this feature - especially autosync - is a huge convenience over pulling the microSD card out or bringing the whole unit in the house to transfer files onto the computer (NB comes with a USB cable for users that want to do that). From experience, some footage never makes it off the camera when you have to go through those additional steps.
The NB also packs a host of other features such as an easy to use touch screen, 1440p video recording, Alexa voice integration, GPS, Emergency SOS, and automatic video backup/lock if in an accident.
Although I really like the functionality, I’m not a big fan of the physical design. The unit itself is quite small, but to achieve its desired focal length and field of view, the lens protrudes from the body quite a bit. This means that even though it’s really easy to pop the unit off the mount and take it with you, it’s not going to fit very well in a pocket. My other very minor complaint is that I had a lot of trouble getting the microSD card inserted. The slot was recessed too much for me to push the card in with my fingers, and I had to use a small tool. Fortunately, I won’t need to constantly pull the card to copy footage to my phone, given that transfers can be done wirelessly. Finally, default recording is at 1440p, so the separate purchase of a larger microSD card is preferable.

This dash cam, and I assume every one by this brand, is completely worthless. I’ve had the camera for two years now, and since day one it stops recording for no reason and without warning, and the disgrace of an app is nearly unusable because it always freezes during file downloads. I would not trust this camera to protect me if I actually needed it after an accident. Avoid this camera!

This dash cam has exceeded my expectations. I work in an auto parts store and recently was looking at the couple options we sold, but passed because I was not impressed with the quality or really anything about them. I'm so glad I passed because this camera is way better! Knowing what was sold at our store, high prices for lack luster products, this is by far the better option and well worth the price. When I opened the product and was first setting it up, I was impressed on how simple it was to connect and activate everything thru the app. The app is very clear and straight to the point, no unwanted features or inconvenient steps and the app nearly set the camera up all on it's own. The camera was very simple to wire in and mount. By wire in I mean just running the power cord to it and tucking it into the headliner. The camera and its mount are small enough to be behind my rearview mirror so I barely see it or notice it while driving. The feature that impressed me the most, especially compared to other dash cameras I have looked at, is the video quality and even the on screen quality. It was much higher quality than I was expecting and when looking at footage on my computer I can easily read nearly every license plate I pass or that passes me. Only thing I've noticed is at certain times of day, like as the sun is rising or starting to set and is just blindingly bright, some license plates get washed out because of how intense the light is, it basically becomes a big reflector (at least our white Illinois plates do) and all you see is bright white shining on a car. But if a shadow happens to appear at that time of day, you can easily read plates again. In states with darker plates this may not be an issue at all. Overall, I am highly impressed with this dash camera and especially the quality it is able to record in and the wide viewing angle. The ease of use is also a very big plus leaving me with zero complaints about this product.

I have had the absolute worst luck when it comes to accidents and people lying through their teeth. With this, I no longer have to worry about that.
Installation was easy enough. I chose the suction cup instead of the tape so that I can switch over the dashcam if I were to change cars. They supply a plastic trim toolthat helps you stow the cable. You can really work to make sure that no cord shows.
The first thing you can do out of the box is to update the firmware by connecting it to your computer. Plug in your micro SD card. For the settings, you can set the record periods. You can also connect your phone to the cam and download the videos if you don't want to take out the SD card.
Video quality is amazing. You can go up to 1440p but the frame rates are capped at 30 fps. At 1080p, you can get 60 fps which I thought was the best of both worlds. The dashcam will start deleting files once the card is filled up. You can also protect some files. I haven't had an accident since I got the dashcam so I haven't had to test this function out.
All in all, this is a great dashcam. Having gone through multiple heartaches of people lying through their teeth, just know that video evidence is absolute. This is absolutely a great investment and I highly recommend this product.
