-This is our first experience with a dedicated dash cam. Previously, we used a Hero 7 Go Pro camera for this purpose. Despite the higher price, we decided to purchase this dash cam due to its higher resolution sensor (relative to most currently available dash cams) and overall positive reviews on several web sites.
-It has locked-up one time, forcing a reboot. It is suspected that overheating may have been the issue due to summertime weather, intense sunlight, and the camera's position lower on the windshield adjacent to a dark colored dashboard. Otherwise, we have been pleased by its overall performance.
-As expected, the resolution is not as good as the 4K Go Pro. However, the file sizes are more manageable, conveniently named, and tagged with GPS data in a format that is easier to review than with the Go Pro. Furthermore, directional and inertial data are available with the dash cam.
-Unlike the 4k Hero 7, the 1440 sensor resolution of the Nextbase 522GW is not sufficient to see U.S.A license plate numbers in many situations. It will be interesting to see what others think of the 4k Nextbase 612GW as it becomes more available.
-The resolution is more than enough to determine the make and models of most cars, the various positions of vehicles within the camera's field of view, driving conditions, and the status of traffic signals.
-In summary, the Nextbase 522GW is easy to install, easy to use, and stores a wealth of data that may be useful in the event of a contested crash. A shortcoming of this, and presumably other, dash cams with 1440 or less resolution is the inability to read U.S. license plates in many situations.

I spent the money to buy a dashcam that was good because I needed it for work. This cam is ok quality, fairly good video, better than a police dashcam but I was just a little disappointed for the money. If you want to be able to read license plates you are gonna have to spend more money than this. And it gets HOT, during operation, even when it’s cold outside. I run mine 6 hours per night for my job, it does good, just runs hot. Also the software will currupt the last file if you do not eject your memory stick via the menu before manually removing it, not a big deal but they could make that more user friendly with software modification, either a better memory writing program or just a faster way to get to the ejection button on the touchscreen. Other than that it’s a great little camera, I run the matching backup camera so if you buy that make sure you get a U3 level MicroSD card. I get about 4 hours of front and back HD on a 128gb so normally I run a 265 gb and that gives me a few hours of wiggle room around my work schedule. Overall not a bad camera, I think the technology overall just has a little bit to go before really great dashcams are around this price/value range. I don’t wanna dis on this company tho, if I was doing YouTube it would be great, overall well engineered, if you need to read license plates far away save more money... 8.5/10

Extremely High Quality Dash Cam

After using a cheap dash cam that didn’t record when I needed it to, I decided to upgrade to a quality product. After a lot of research, I landed on the Nextbase 522GW. The video playback quality is excellent! There is a setting called “dual files” where basically there is a high quality and low quality version of the same video that is saved. This could be handy if you need to send it by email to your insurance company because it keeps the file size small. The default settings have the video lengths set at one minute, again to keep the file sizes small. I used a SanDisk - Extreme PLUS 128GB microSDXC UHS-I Memory Card.
The 522 was very stable during a recent off-road event. The video seems smoother than what the ride was!
Another reason I chose this cam is because it’s compatible with the Nextbase rear view camera. I think having video evidence (front and rear) in case of an accident is well worth the price.

CONSTANT PROBLEMS, A REAL NIGHTMARE

Do you enjoy seeing "Connection Failed"? multiple times a day? Do you enjoy error messages informing you that "We are having trouble pairing with your device?" Do you enjoy "SOS Phone not Connected" messages on a bright red background popping up randomly while you are driving? But most of all..do you enjoy configuring a device as if it is brand new again and again and again?
If you said yes to all of the above then the Nextbase 522GW might just be the right dash cam for you!
I don't even know where to begin with this but to say that initial setup seemed to go really smooth and I was very impressed with this dash cam. I did have some issues with Alexa but figured no biggie I'll come back to it (more on that later, ugh..). The mounting and getting the camera setup was a breeze overall and the line provided to connect up the camera is way long enough to go all the way hidden in my front dash, down the side door, up and under the center panel and all the way to my back seat.
I initially only had one issue, aside from Alexa, and that was the fact that the unit did not turn off when I turned off the automobile. I tried several of the setup options such as Parking Mode and nothing seemed to help. I'd go away and even after 5 to 7 minutes I'd come back and the unit would still be on. So I emailed support. And waited. And while I waited I read a lot on the internet and, as it turns out, some cars never shut off their cigarette power. This gave me the idea to run the power connector to the back seat cigarette lighter. I was concerned that the cable was not long enough but it was. This resolved the issue. From here on out whenever I shut the car off within about 5 seconds the unit would turn off.
I did get a reply from the manufacturer in response to my inquiry about a day later. Despite the fact that I had stated in my problem inquiry that I had reset the unit fully the entire response given to me was to re-run setup of the unit. I was a bit disappointed in this. As a former PC technician I completely understand that the first step is always to try to reset or reconfigure I had done this and indicated as such in my answer. This told me that they really didn't thoroughly read, or understand, what I had written but instead just gave me a generic form answer. So strike one!
Strike two came about quickly when, after a couple of days without issue I decided to configure Alexa. No amount of anything I would do would seem to get Alexa working. I must have set this unit up 20 times to no avail. As it turns out, Alexa WAS working, it just does nothing specific to this actual device. So why in the world it matters that this has Alexas, at this point, is beyond me. Yeah I read the manufacturers response to this and it was "well with our unit you can just say "Hey Alexa" and don't have to go in on your phone and hit a button to get Alexa's attention. Well no one cares because that is what I have Siri for. So maybe this is something that can benefit Android users but is pretty much a waste of time to Apple Iphone users.
A quick trouble ticket was opened with the manufacturer who emailed me back the next day with the advice to "delete my settings, reinstall the app and reconfigure the entire thing" Should I have expected any more? Apparently not...Strike 2 indeed.
Strike three is a big one...the constant "SOS Phone Not Connected" message that randomly pops up on a bright red background while you are driving. It's very bright, very red and can be highly distracting!! There is no rhyme or reason to this message. I've had it pop up and then verify on my phone that it *IS* connected to the dashcam and then I've also had it pop up and realize that, for whatever reason my dash cam is *NOT* connected to my phone. I have spent time reconfiguring, from scratch, on the side of the road in rest areas, the entire unit. This takes a good 10 to 20 minutes by the way. I have finally figured out that getting this message is usually resolved by simply turning off the dashcam, turning it back on and then once connected the message won't pop up. Or it might. Because as I stated, it still just pops up randomly even when the dashcam is succesfully connected.
I had a theory, one last hope. Maybe, instead of filling out the SOS part of the app I would reset everything and just not fill it out. I had hopes that by not activating the SOS coverage that I would quit getting this hugely distracting bright red message and having to reconfigure, restart, etc. Nope, still comes up whenever it feels like.
That's strike three.
I seriously cannot recommend this to anyone. When it works and records video it works great. The video is nice and bright and clear as anything. It does it's job in that respect. But having reset this thing and reconfigured this thing about 50 times in the past week I really would seriously like to just chuck it over the next hill I come across. DO NOT BUY THIS. In fact, considering how the company has responded to my inquiries I'd not recommend you buy anything at all from them.

I've had this product for a few months now and have enjoyed it. Very easy to operate, takes great video and if you need pictures as well. One downside is once you disconnect from charging station it might give you a minute of life before it shuts down and looses power. But for the most part it stays hooked up to the power supply.

This is honestly probably one of the best, most complete dash cams on the market. The picture quality is amazing, even though it’s not full 4k, and it’s packed with features that you usually don’t get all in one package. Pretty much the ONLY downside so far is because it has a built in battery, you can’t leave it in your car on a hot day like you can with a capacitor driven one like the Thinkwares. However the send off, is that when you do leave it in overnight or on mild weather days, the battery holds enough power to capture any events that happen while parked without the pain of having to figure out how to hardwire it to your car’s battery like most other ones with a park mode. The optional rest camera is a perfect add on and also records HD quality. Definitely happy with this purchase.

Another Full-Featured Nextbase Dash Cam!

The Nextbase line of dash cams are a great addition to a vehicle for peace of mind with a clear and accurate recording of what's going on around you.
I've owned Nextbase dash cams for a couple of years now, and the 522 is a nice upgrade from the 322 I was previously using.
To start with, Nextbase continue to maintain a mounting standard, so I actually was able to just magnetically clip into my previous mount that was in my vehicle, replacing the 322 with the 522. That is really smart of Nextbase.
If you aren't replacing a camera and this is your first time, you have a 'Click & Go' base with adhesive on it to mount to your windshield, that the power cord plugs into. You also have a replacement adhesive base, should you wish to transfer it between vehicles. The mount is well designed, well built and doesn't move around when in a moving vehicle.
Featuring QHD (Quad HD Video) the 1440p image is nice and clear, very crisp and captures great details. I've included a couple of images of the picture quality, and it looks great. The camera itself is a little larger than the 322 I replaced, but that gives you a better, bigger lens, and a larger touch screen on the back (3" vs the previous 2.5").
GPS speed and location are available on the screen, and are embedded in the recordings as well. You can turn this feature on and off in the many feature menus of the camera. The camera is also wifi connected. Once you download the Nextbase app (available for iPhone and Android), you can connect to your camera wirelessly and transfer any footage you have into the Nextbase app. From there you can review it and share it, or save it to your camera roll on the phone. It does take a little while, depending on your recording settings, for me, it took about 7 mins to download 5 files. Each file was around 400MB on average.
The camera also has an SOS Emergency Alert option (should you choose to set it up) that can alert emergency services automatically, of your blood type, allergies or any other pre-set medical conditions to help with your treatment in case of an emergency.
The 522 also has Alexa built in, so you can ask Alexa to play music, place calls, turn on your smart lights as you pull in the driveway, and even control the 522 dash cam itself!
The camera also has 'intelligent parking mode' that when set, automatically records if it notices any bumps or physical movement of the vehicle when its unattended. Perfect for hit and run scenarios or attempted theft.
I previously mentioned the Nextbase app, but if you download the full Mac/PC compatible software, or use the free MyNextbase Suite online, you open up a Pandora's Box of information and options. The software shows the speed, direction, GPS location, the G-Force, and even Google Maps highlighted route of your direction of travel. So much data is available that it really helps make your case if you are ever in a non fault accident situation.
I've unfortunately had to use that data in the past, but it was irrefutable evidence, proving my innocence in the situation, absolutely invaluable!
To store those video clips, that camera is able to support up to 128GB MicroSD cards (not included). If you plan to add a rear facing dash cam, you need to make sure that the MicroSD is marked U3.
Overall, the Nextbase 522 is a feature packed dash cam that in this day and age, you really do need to add to your vehicle, with all of the 'interesting' driving antics that happen around us.
Whole heartedly recommend this Dash Cam, and all other Nextbase cameras I've owned (this is my third now)

I purchased this dashcam when we decided to move from New Jersey to San Jose California last year. I was able to document our 5 days road trip of approximately 3,500 miles. The video quality is excellent. The only problem that I encountered is the built in battery it only last for less than 3 minutes after you turn off the engine. It is a bit pricey compared to other dash cam with the same specs. I may recommend this to a friend.

Excellent camera. Video quality is great. The app doesn't cooperate when you want to see live video, you almost have to reinstall it. The touch screen is great and very responsive. I have the inside cam and the pic n pic allows you to see what is going on inside the cabin. The inside cam isn't IR, so nighttime viewing is out of the question. The parking mode does the job, I have mine hardwired in. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a dash cam.

I bought this NextBase 522GW dash cam as a replacement for my cheapo $30 dash cam that died after the battery swelled up from the heat. As such, I've had this for about 9 months now, and so far, I've been delighted with it.
The picture is exceptionally clear, installation was very easy and the ease of operation is through the roof. Why? I needed a cam that would work for my technically challenged wife. As in, it had to run itself without any intervention. My wife would always forget to turn off the old camera, which ran down the battery all the time. And sometimes she would forget to start it, which defeats the entire purpose of having a dash cam.
I have this cam plugged into our accessory port (Honda Civic DX coupe), and when the car starts, the camera starts. When the car is turned off, the camera turns off. It simply does not get any easier than this, and with its huge storage card and ability to self-manage files (overwriting the oldest), this is a no-brainer. It's expensive, and it's worth it.
Although it is not shown in my purchases, I also purchased the $100 rear-view plug in camera. The NextBase has a great capability, which is an additional side port for plugging in accessories like this rear-view cam. Granted, the view is limited to what it sees out the back window from the front of the car, but I didn't want to buy the other rear-view cam which comes with like a 20' extension cord that also plugs into the main camera, because then I would have to route cables and so on, and that wasn't acceptable in my case. The advantage of that cam is that it sticks to the rear window and gives a much, much better rear view, as well as much wider. My only concern was to catch any activities such as a rear-end collision.

Camera is Great, App Doesn’t Work

This camera is great. It captures very good video compared to an average dash cam. The mounting system is great. It gives you the option to mount via an adhesive mount or a suction cup. Either way, the camera attaches and detaches to the mount quite easily via magnets. The built in polarizing filter really helps cut down glare. I’m really pleased with the hardware all around.
However, the app is not ready for prime time. Your phone connects to the camera in one of two ways, depending on what you’re doing. It first uses Bluetooth to connect. That works just fine. This allows you to do things like see and change camera settings. When you want to see or download video, though, it connects via WiFi. This doesn’t work properly on my iPhone 7. It will connect to the camera’s WiFi network but it will not display or download video. I’ve attempted to do some troubleshooting. First I updated the camera to the latest firmware. Then I reset the camera to factory settings. Finally, I deleted the app from my phone and reinstalled while also resetting the camera. So far, nothing has helped and I’m left to hope the app gets an update to fix the issues. In the meantime, I’ve got to physically connect the camera to my computer to retrieve the footage. It’s a good thing it easily disconnects from the mount!

I have been running this camera for about 5 months now. I have gone through 4 other cameras before this one. With the others, the Florida heat ends up destroying the camera. With this camera, I was concerned it would happen again. I contacted the company, and the operational temperature of this camera is 50 degrees C, which is 122 degrees Fahrenheit. The inside of my truck has hit 115 degrees inside, so I was very happy to get that news.
Operationally, it is a very easy camera to operate. It does get warm when operating, just like some of the others, but that doesn't seem to affect it. The build quality is exceptional, and the magnetic mounting makes it much easier to remove and carry it inside. The power attaches to the base, not the camera. So you can permanently install the power and not have to continually unplug it from the camera.
The video quality is exceptional. I don't have any pictures to post, but it is clear in both bright sun and nighttime. The only washout I have seen is driving directly towards a setting sun. But that is expected on all but the most expensive cameras.
This is a pricey camera. but compared to buying 4 cameras before it, I believe buying this one will save you more in the long run.
If you want a high quality camera that takes high-quality video, then I recommend this dashcam.

This cam does provide a much better picture compared to other brands in its price range. Garmin does make a good cameras but for the price point this is better. The one model up from this does do 4K but its more expensive. This one wil capture license plates quite well. The only thing that lags with Nextbase is the app. Its not particularly great. Can be buggy and have connection issues frequently. If an event happens where you need the footage its best you plug the momory card into your computer and get it that way. Other than that get the hardwire kit and have the Best Buy folks install it. You will be glad tyou did.

Set up was the runaround. Things spinning, not loading, unclear messaging etc. The experience would probably be absolutely seamless if everything works right, but it seems like they didn’t take messaging and user experience into account for when things don’t work , and it got extremely frustrating. I was about to return it then by the grace of God, it worked. (My WiFi and proximity was excellent Btw).
It’s a GREAT camera and does everything it’s supposed to do. It’s been 100% reliable, starting up and connecting correctly every time I start my car, downloading and editing video. I love the SOS feature. It sticks to the windshield just fine, and I’m using the suction cup.
It does interfere with my car stereo when I’m streaming via Bluetooth. Lots of cutting out. I should mention I am not hard wired. I don’t have rear camera (which is better known for causing interference). I did a little troubleshooting and research and ended up ordering another ferrite. It clips onto the power cable to cut back interference. There’s already one on it from factory but I guess I’ll try another one. Alternatively I read to replace the power cable with a higher quality one.
If that doesn’t work, I’ll see about getting it hardwired.
All in all I’m glad I bought it and I would highly recommend. Just beware there may be some pain points, like all electronics really.

Gorgeously designed, very compact, and sleek and smart. Out of the box, Nextbase 522GW dash cam needs to be paired up to a smartphone (IOS, Android) to finish the initial setup and update the camera to enable Alexa voice assistant. Setup is straight forward and smooth process. screen is 3" IPS, 1440p HD resolution at 30 fps. It's very responsive and intuitive. I had an issue with updating the camera over wifi as I spent 2 hours trying to get it done until I decided to download Nexbase player on my Mac to run the update faster. Mounting kit is all what you need from adhesive pad to windshield suction mount. SOS call in the event of an emergency after an accident happens and driver is unresponsive, this dash cam will call for emergency to the location of the accident "God forbids" based on the GPS data. BT connectivity, allows autosync to recorded clips to flow to Nextbase app on smartphone. Smart intelligence recording, records any bumps may happen to the car automatically. I have installed my dash cam in the lazy way, by using the suction mounting holder without tucking the cable away. you find all the tools needed in the box but I preferred the classic way so I can take it off anytime with no hassle. it is just me!
Note: this dash-cam does not come with SD card included, you may consider buying one up to 128 GB and taking into consideration buying an Ultra Speed SD to handle the files speed transition.

Video quality is superb. I tested this against other similarly priced cams that were available at BestBuy and this one was the best video quality. I replaced a 6 year old Garmin 40 series with this only because I wanted an additional rear facing camera. When this camera works, it’s awesome. Every once in a while it freezes and I don’t realize it froze until it turns off because the internal battery runs out and makes a chime. To me, this is completely unacceptable. The old Garmin I had Never, absolutely never gave me any problems. I never even formatted the sd card in it. It always recorded and was easy to download the videos right to my phone. This 522 is frustrating to use when I want to download the videos. Sucks honestly. I want to replace it so bad but I can’t spend another $350 on something else (which is what this cost me along with rear camera).

Hello, Freezing is symptomatic of an SD card failure. SD cards only have limited lifespans. In our manuals we recommend formatting every 2-3 weeks to prolong the life of the card. Without this regular formatting, or if the card is non-compatible or damaged, the card could corrupt which would cause a failure of data writing. Symptoms of SD card failure are: an audible 'alarm' tone, non-functional buttons, freezing, corrupted files on playback, image missing from files, lack of file recording etc. Please ensure your SD card is compatible and is regularly formatted. If you need any further help with your SD card, please contact [email protected].

Never heard of these guys before, but product looked best build quality on the display, and figured it needs to survive a accident! It's easy to use, but woefully unreliable. I was recently hit by a drunk driver and when it happened, right as I was hit, the video stopped recording for roughly 30 seconds. It seems that when it records, the segments of video aren't seamless at all. This is a huge problem.
Also, it is marketed as having the ability to send its video wirelessly to their app on your phone-- this almost never works despite perfect wifi connections.
The product fails as it is supposed to be something you can rely on, and despite good video quality and overall utility, this is a fatal flaw.

Hello,
It's very likely that the file was recorded as a Protected File instead of a normal file, hence the 30 second period. When the 'Protect' function is activated a file containing 10 seconds prior to the incident and 20 seconds after is written to the Protected folder.
I'd recommend viewing the SD card on a computer instead. You should see the card show as a drive. Once opened you'll see DCIM, and inside this 'PHOTO', 'VIDEO' and 'PROTECTED'. IF you view inside the Protected File you should find the missing footage.
If there's anything else that we can do to help, please don't hesitate to get in contact at [email protected].
