I use this dashcam in my semi truck for insurance purposes. The quality of video is second to none as it has a wide field of view. In the unfortunate event of an accident, it has a large button to stop and capture the evidence. When used with the 64GB micro sd card, you can get over 24hrs of constant recording, which is ideal for parking overnight unattended. I'm also a fan of the telemetry data which displays geographic location and speed. I'm very pleased with this product, this is the second similar dashcam i purchased.

    Great For Truckers

I drive a truck for a living, and after reviewing several dash cams I ended up buying this one. It is a great camera. Most of my driving is at night. It doesn't work well in low light areas at night, but then I don't think many will. One of the reasons I went with the Nextbase was it included a suction cup mount for the windshield, where with a few other brands this was an extra accessory that had to be purchased separately. I caught it on sale, and at the time, it was a pretty good bang for the buck. I have been extremely satisfied with mine so far.

The Nextbase 522GW is an HD dash camera (actually, slightly more than HD at 1440p) capable of recording at 30fps with a touchscreen. It is in the shape of a digital camera and can be mounted "permanently" or temporarily to the front windsheld. The temporary mount is one that lets you unclip the camera and move it to a different vehicle so if you have multitiple vehicles that aren't driven simultaneously, you can save on the cost of a second dash cam. The reviewed unit doesn't come with a rear camera though the 522GW does support one. That would also be something that wouldn't easily move from vehicle to vehicle. The 522GW sports typical features present in top of the line cameras - HD+ at 30fps, crash detection, a parking mode, wireless access to configure the camera, view and download videos, and a "protect" button to indicate the current video should be saved and not overwritten by the normal continuous recording loop. Where it goes a bit beyond is with the built-in GPS (as opposed to using your phone or an add-on unit), an emergency SOS feature (which requires your phone to be present), and Alexa functionality. In the box is the camera itself, a magnetic and suction cup mount. Adhesive + base for the magnetic mount. Essentially you have a metal base that is permanently attached to the windshield and then the mount which the camera clips onto is magnetically attached to that base. The mount lets use adjust the angle of the camera and you can rotate the camera about it's attachement point. The nice thing about the magnetic base is that you can quickly detach the camera or rotate it, for example to capture something out the driver or passenger window without having to fully grab the camera and hold and point it yourself. There's a pry tool that those who have replaced cell phone screens or done other car electronic installs will be familiar with, a usb to cigarette adapter power cable and a regular usb cable to connect the camera to your PC. The kit does not come with an SD card but it is required to use the camera. It does not have internal storage that can be used standalone. Installation can be quick if you don't care about wires hanging around or take 20-30 minutes if you want to do a good job tucking the power cable away. You'll want to run the power cable behind trim for a hidden look. Be sure to look to see if you have a 12V connection under the passenger glovebox area which may save you from having to run the cable completely back to the center console area. Unfortuanately, this doesn't ship with a hardwire connection kit so you have no choice but to power through the cigarette lighter. The problem with this is that some cigarette lighters are connected to a constant source of 12V, so the camera can't immediately detect that your car has turned on and should go into driving mode or turned off and go into parking mode. That said, the camera does have a fallback. If there's no motion for 5 minutes, it will automatically enter parking mode. If motion is detected, it will startup and record video (for example, someone ramming into your parked car) for 2 minutes. If there is motion after that two minutes, it will enter driving mode. After installation and positioning comes the camera setup. The nice thing about having a touchscreen on the camera - you can setup and configure things without an app. Power up the camera for the first time and you'll get the setup menu. Select your language then location/country, time zone and units (mph vs kmh for example). Once that's done, you can connect to the phone app. This is where you can enable the Alexa and SOS features. From the menu, you can access camera settings. I won't go through every single setting but you do get additional video configuration like switching to 1080p at 60fps! To be fair, both with this dashcam and others I've had, 30fps is pretty good. I'm not sure of the particular use case of 1080p at 60fps (It won't save on space on the SD card for example) other than being able to play stuff back a bit in slow mo. You can also control what information is overlayed in the video like timestamps, GPS, model, and speed. You can turn on or off parking mode and configure the sensitivity of the G-sensor. Unlike some other premium cameras, this one only uses motion sensing while in parking mode. It does not continuously record (at a lower frame rate) and then come to life if motion is detect by the camera. This probably helps it not drain your battery (or need to have sophisticated power measurement on board so that it knows to shut off to protect your battery). In video mode (pretty much the top level of the UI) you can either see the current camera view, start recording, enter a menu to view and playback videos, or go to the settings. Tapping the screen while in video mode will take a screenshot, which is a cool "hidden" feature (hidden as in not prominently advertised). What is amazing is that despite having both a mobile and PC app and video editor, you can edit videos on the camera itself! The editing though is mainly triming the video length. The PC software is actually pretty cool. Aside from playback and editing, it can show your trip on a map. You can follow along on a map a particular journey while watching the video. This can be useful for identifying where exactly you were located when a particular event happened. While you can figure it out from the GPS coordinate, an actual map view is much better. Editing on the PC is obviously a bit more featured. You can annotate, combine videos, and post process them to reduce file size. The combining is pretty nice. For those that don't know how a dashcam works, they typically record video for a configurable length of time, say 3 minutes. Once that expires, it continues to record starting a new file. Once all the non-protected space is used up on the SD card, it overwrites the oldest video. If you have an event that occurred over 10 minutes, that could be across as many as 5 different videos. Being able to combine them together into one continuous recording is pretty handy. The software also lets you share to the cloud. I didn't try that and frankly don't find it that compelling. I know some other competitors are offering cloud services but there's already Youtube and facebook and no dominant dash cam provider (except maybe Tesla). I just don't see any particular manufacturer as providing a compelling reason to give up more privacy by uploading my video into their system. Video quality is pretty good. Great for day time, competitive for night recording. One adjusted correctly, it was pretty rare that sunlight would overwhelm the image unless it really was right in front of you. Then you'd have a hard time seeing too without sunglasses. My usual test is verifying that I can read license plates in video while the car is in motion from daytime recordings and license plates at low to stopped from night recordings - this passed both tests. An interesting thing about the camera is that it has a battery. Most dash cams likely have a supercap which provides enough energy for them to gracefully shut down video recording and save the file when the car turns off and power is gone. This can actually go for almost 30 minutes the no power. This can be useful if you need to get out the car and survey the aftermath of an accident - you can have continuous recording from driving to looking around versus having to switch between the dashcam and recording with your cell phone. It also means you can continue recording outside your vehicle while on the phone with emergency services or your insurance company. My rating is 4 stars. At this price point, it would be nice to have the rear camera and hardwire kit. There is parking mode functionality that should be present in a premium camera and better configureability of the G-sensor. At the same time, you gain access to a nice PC and phone app and surprising amount of functionality right on the camera itself. There's some surprise features like the screenshot (nice to capture cool license plates or weird events without having to store an entire video (and then extract the frames manually later) and 30 minute battery. Video quality is on par with competitors so this is a really compelling camera, especially if all the features it presents line up with your needs.

So far it’s working as expected. Quality of video And audio is good. I paired it with the rear window cam and it’s working well. I would like to move the location of the pic-in-pic but that’s a minor detail.

We've been using it now for almost a couple of months. PROs -it takes great pictures and video -it's easy to use -love the speed display as a screen saver -fone app works well, but see SD card issue below CONs -it wasn't cheap -it has very specific SD card needs, we've had a couple of bad turns until we knew this (found in on-line forums) -the clip that holds it to the windshield is very tight and hard to get camera off and on until it is used a few times -it gets uncomfortably HOT (and we remove from window when we park) -hard to see with polarized lens This product is from Europe and use of written English might confuse some users. I would purchase again-and we might for our second vehicle.

It wasn't bad but I did only try it for less than 24 hours I personally didn't like the way it looked on my windshield but its was great other than that also for the price of the product it felt kind of like cheap plastic but it wouldn't make me not want to try it again in a different car

      Hello,
      Thank you for your review.
The purpose of the design is to be practical while offering the best possible performance. It is meant to be discreet and still have a screen the user can see clearly; the material is strong enough to protect it and light enough to allow installation on the windshield. Thank you for the detailed feedback, it is appreciated. We hope you can try this model again or any other of our Dash Cams.
