    False advertising

The biggest thing I was looking for in a security system was good battery life, 24/7 recording if not then motion detecting and good camera quality. I thought I had everything with this purchase and this product however it turns out I was a victim of False advertising when it comes to battery life. Firstly, the battery life is dependent on the amount of movement going on during the day not actual battery life. If you live on a busy street or if your business is on a busy street I do not recommend this product as the battery life will be depleted rather quickly. I've only had this product about 2 weeks and I've had to recharge all four of my cameras due to low battery life. And this was even after falling all instructions regarding charging as soon as I got this product. Another false advertising area that I see is when I was reading the box under recording it states that it has recording mode such as motion event schedule or continuous however I've been unable to have a continuous recording only a motion detecting recording. Video quality is great and ease of using this product setting it up and everything was also great. However, the key features that I need in a security system were not met and is the reason why I gave this product a poor rating. Below in my pictures you will see the box pictures of what I was reading regarding recording and battery life and then you'll also see a picture from tech support from night owl stating battery life is only dependent on how much motion activity there is. However if you just need a motion detected security system and don't have much motion throughout the day going on around your home or business this will be a great product for you.

Great Security System without a Subscription

I recently upgraded my home security system to the Night Owl 10 Channel 4K Wi-Fi NVR Security System with 1TB Hard Drive and 4 Wire-Free 1080p Cameras, and I must say, it's been a game-changer for my peace of mind. The setup process was super easy. The Wi-Fi control box needs to be plugged directly to your home's router and then for display I initially plugged it into my office TV’s HDMI port, which I don't recommend using a 4k TV as some of the User Interface buttons are cut off in the corners and I ended up connecting it to a spare PC monitor I had laying around. Once that was set up, it was now just taking the cameras out of the boxes, inserting the batteries, and making sure all four cameras were fully cahrged and downloading the Night Owl app. In the app just follow the instructions to pair the Wi-Fi box and the cameras which is a quick process. Note:The Step-by-step instructions in the app are for a different model camera, so follow the directions that come in the box for the cameras. I then proceeded to install the cameras around the 3 entrances to my home where all you have to do is screw in four screws that are provided and angle the camera to the desired position and the last camera I decided to install inside my home facing my front door entrance. The 1080p video quality for the wireless cameras was shockingly crisp and detailed making it easy to identify faces and even read license plates from a distance. I've been impressed with the clarity, whether it's during the day or at night. The camera's night vision uses infrared technology that works great providing clear footage even in complete darkness and there is a setting that allows you to turn on a built-in flash for any motion that is detected. One feature that I find particularly useful is the motion-activated alerts. Whenever a camera detects any movement, I receive instant notifications on my phone through the Night Owl app. And takes me to that specific camera’s feed and shows a snippet of what was seen on the camera. This has given me a peace of mind leaving my family alone. The NVR comes with a 1TB hard drive which has plenty of storage space, where I don't feel like I have to worry about the recordings filling up quickly. It's a relief knowing that I can go back and review past footage whenever I need to without the fear of running out of space. I also appreciate the option to access the live camera feeds remotely through the app. It's so convenient to be able to check in on my property while I'm at work or when I go on a vacation. The app's interface is user-friendly and allows you to navigate effortlessly through the various feeds. One of the best things about the Night Owl system is that unlike other surveillance companies that force you to sign up for a subscription service, Night Owl does not make you pay a monthly fee to use their services, which In my opinion makes it a smart investment for anyone's home. Overall, the Night Owl 10 Channel 4K Wi-Fi NVR Security System has exceeded my expectations. Its great video quality, reliable performance, and user-friendly app make it an excellent choice for anyone looking to enhance their home security. I feel much better knowing that my property is under constant surveillance, and I can't recommend this system enough to others in search of a reliable and feature-packed security solution that also does not have a subscription fee.

I really wanted to love this system. I like the packaging, the setup was interesting (more on that later), but the reliability of the sensors are a problem. Either my house is haunted with a lot of ghosts walking in front of the (1080P) camera's or the human sensor needs to be adjusted with a firmware update. Pro's: 1.Very easy to assemble and put together. 2. Instructions are clear and concise. 3. Video from the camera's is pretty good. (7 out of 10) 4. The camera is easy to charge and I do recommend following the instructions and be patient and charge the batteries before using the camera's. (I am only using two of them so I basically doubling my time of use before having to charge now.) 5. Love the idea of not having to have a subscription. 6. Decent speed from notification to app showing the event once you get the notification from the camera via Wi-Fi or over cellular data. 7. With the 37 devices on my network at any given moment the system is connected to my router through my access point and it just works. No connection issues so far. 8. Offline storage Con's: 1. Setup using the app was interesting. You have a couple of ways to get started and I recommend waiting until you get the system to create your account to get the system running. I tried to be proactive and it didn't work out to great. Created a lot of unnecessary frustration while trying to get the system online. 2. The false positive notifications have gotten so out of hand that I basically turned them off except for the camera on my porch (turned off the options for pixel change, face and vehicle) that will report humans when they are there but will also tell me when there is absolutely no movement or anything else going on in the video that was captured due to the camera thinking either a human, car was on my porch. 3. I have not found a way to delete recordings from the drive. Yes, it's a 1TB drive but if I want to delete all the false positive notifications I should be able to so that I don't have to scroll through a ton of video that isn't necessary. 4. The spotlight isn't that bright. I can walk out my front door at night and go to my Jeep and watch the camera and the spotlight will not come on sometimes and I won't get a notification on my phone either. 5. I thought maybe the first camera I put up on the porch was bad so I replaced it with one of the others in the kit. Used all four and they did the same thing as far the spotlight, recording and notifications are concerned. 6. Video Quality settings are interesting. They say it depends on your internet speed and local bandwidth. I am stuck on low and I have the house hardwired with cat6e cable and 2.5Gb switches in the house and I have Fios with a gigabyte connection from them so I I don't understand why it's stuck on low. 7. Color and Orientation has three settings that are adjustable. Brightness, Contrast and Rotate. Brightness and Contrast are adjustable but the rotation is not accessible to me in the app. I have two other systems that I can rely on as far as ease of use and image quality. This system is good if its you're first one and should handle the basics. Just be aware of the little things that might drive you up the wall. Not sure I would recommend this to anyone right now. With some updates maybe but as it currently exists I don't think I can recommend it.

    Decent System, Needs Refinement

In reviewing the Night Owl Battery Wi-Fi Security System, I was satisfied, but it was missing some refinements that would make it a must-have for all consumers. The biggest benefits of the system are that it offers good video quality, long-lasting rechargeable batteries, and no monthly fees. Since there are no wires, I was able to place the cameras anywhere I wanted on the property. Additionally, the built-in spotlight is a great feature. It takes a little time, about 1-3 seconds, to adjust when the light is enabled, but it still provides a great picture at night. It also alerts intruders or animals to the presence of the camera. My greatest disappointments were that the accompanying app is not user-friendly, and the setup was wonky. Although all of the directions were correct and eventually led to a successful setup. The 2-way audio just doesn't perform well. The sound that did come from the system was enough to scare someone away, but it wasn't ideal for communicating. Additionally, there are only 2 batteries included (out of 4 slots). The cameras only needed two batteries to operate, but it would have been nice to have a full complement of batteries. The human detection technology could also be improved. This feature performed its job, but there were no advanced features that really stood out. The camera caught most of the interaction, but it also caught bugs and leaves falling. Ultimately, you need to select the most optimal spaces to set up the camera with the least amount of distracting traffic. Overall, I would rate the Night Owl Battery Wi-Fi Security System a 3 out of 5 stars. It is a good value, but there are some features that could be improved.

    Really good video security system

The Night Owl 10 Channel 4K Wi-Fi NVR Security System with Wire Free Cameras is a complete yet expandable security system that does not require a subscription. I did see mention of an optional (subscription) cloud storage offering. But the 1 TB of storage in the NVR should be sufficient for my needs. An HDMI connection allows a monitor to be connected directly to the NVR. The Night Owl app provides remote monitoring capabilities. What’s in the Box: 1 TB (storage) 4K capable NVR (Network Video Recorder) 4 Battery operated wire free 1080p cameras with mounts and mounting hardware 8 Rechargeable batteries (each camera will hold 4, but will operate with just 2) 1 Battery charge cable (USB-A to USB-C) 1 HDMI cable 2 NVR antennas 1 USB mouse 1 RJ45 (Ethernet) cable Printed Quick Start Guides The instructions say to charge the cameras for at least 3 hours. So, first thing, I charged them all up. Initially I was going to set up the cameras without using the Night Owl app. It had bad reviews in the app store. But the initial setup screen on the NVR really pushes the app. So, I downloaded it and it seems to work just fine. I set up the first camera with the app on my Android phone with no problem. In the interest of a fair test, I set up the next camera using the NVR, monitor (I provided the monitor. One does not come with the system.) and the mouse that came with the system. Set up this way was also straight forward. After setting up all 4 cameras I set them aside thinking I would mount them outside after work the next day. However, one camera ran its batteries down significantly overnight in sleep mode. The other 3 camers still showed 100% charge. To troubleshoot I traded the batteries out between the rogue camera and one that was working correctly and charged up the discharged batteries, making sure all the batteries were fully charged. Then I got distracted and did not get the cameras mounted. The next day the (defective) camera had run its batteries down again. The other 3 were still at 100% charge. So, the problem wasn’t bad batteries. Night Owl provided a support phone number, and links to help videos and FAQs. The videos and FAQs didn’t address this issue, so I called. I was only on hold a couple of minutes when a tech answered. I explained the issue and what I’d done to troubleshoot. He agreed the camera was likely defective, but needed to get approval from warranty to send me a new one. The next day I was notified that a replacement camera was on the way. So gold stars to Night Owl technical support! I mounted the three working cameras on the exterior of my house and tested. The motion sensors accurately detected motion and started recording. They also (with only a couple of misses) detected and noted human figures in the video. The automated audio notifications quickly became annoying so I disabled them. But if you need to monitor a location that isn’t constantly recording you, they could be useful. Picture quality seems to be dependent on wireless signal strength. One camera is closer to the NVR and has fewer obstructions. Its picture is better. But they are all good. On my phone the difference isn’t noticeable, but the larger screen on the 28 inch monitor I attached shows the difference. So do the best you can to optimize the wireless signal strength. For me, this is an acceptable tradeoff for the wireless capabilities. It took me less than fifteen minutes to mount the three cameras since I did not have to run any wires. It also gave me a lot more freedom as to where I mounted the cameras, since power and ethernet connectivity were not an issue. A few things I think could be improved include: • A lot more flexibility in managing the system locally. I’d like to see how full the storage is and be able to easily delete old video that I have reviewed, etc. • The NVR is hardwired to my router, less than two feet away, but it shows offline too often. • The rechargeable batteries are Lithium Ion 18650. I think the kit should come with 4 batteries for each camera instead of just 2. Each camera will hold 4 and the Night Owl web site shows the estimated battery life doubles if 4 are installed. (Night Owl says battery charge lasts “up to a year” with 4, and “up to 6 months” with 2. Additional batteries are also currently out of stock at this writing.) • I’d like to be able to pan and zoom. Night Owl may offer cameras that do this, but mine don’t and I don’t see anything in the app or local management console about it. In summary, the Night Owl 10 channel 4K Wi-Fi NVR Security System with 1TB of storage and 4 Wire Free 1080p Cameras is a really good self-contained video surveillance system right out of the box, especially considering the modest cost and no subscription fees. It can be expanded up to 10 cameras. Set up was easy. No wiring is required for the cameras. And bonus points for my positive experience with their tech support.

Most security camera system are ok. Having a 4 cameras is the very least I suggest going with because less cameras mean less coverage. So this system has 4 and it’s just enough. I’m a huge fan of wireless cameras because it doesn’t take an electrician to set up anything. When mounting your cameras make sure that are pointing or angled down to get a full scope of your area. I’m a huge fan of not having monthly fees and being able to save over old stuff that I don’t need. The spotlights are actually decent but not a true spot light in power. I do think it tends to run down the battery of the camera a little more than a regular camera without the lights. The voice alert function is also ok but also drains the batteries. I use the 2 way audio to talk to guests when they visit, or hubby when he is bbq’ing oitside or even my dog when she runs out the front door. The audio is clear, mostly treble no bass. Connection with you Wi-Fi is east and quick and you are up in running in minutes. Small dvr that can fit almost anywhere. My only complaint is the picture video. Doesn’t feel like 1080p resolution sometime.

The practicality of wireless devices comes with some drawbacks by its very nature, such as rechargeable batteries, use of slow or unstable wireless connection, short range bluetooth connection and sometimes sacrifices in the materials of which the parts are made to prioritize the technology that allows such practicality. In this device (set of 4 wireless cameras and a wired NVR) what is mainly sacrificed is the quality of the materials if we consider the price, however I consider that the greatest effort is in the ease in terms of installation and configuration as to carry out this is very simple, the app guides you step by step through the configuration, although it is important to mention that the app has much room for improvement, because despite meeting the basics it lacks fluidity and more options for organizing notifications and videos of events. The four cameras include the screws(3) and sockets(3) enough to install them in the desired location, it does not include extra screws, also include 8 rechargeable batteries that are 2 for each camera, although you can install four for each camera. Something that does not convince is that the NVR needs to be connected via ethernet to the network to serve as a receiving base for wireless cameras. The NVR (1TB) has two antennas that are screwed to the back of the device and has two USB ports, an HDMI port, a LAN port, in case you have a monitor or TV available you can connect via HDMI and a mouse which is already included, in fact you can access a more advanced configuration in this way than only through the phone app. Regarding the performance of the cameras, they're ok: the image quality is good 1080p, bright and clear enough night mode, sensitivity of the sensors of different levels, activity zone (in case you do not want the camera to detect movement in a specific area). In what they leave much to be desired is the speakers and microphone, despite having two-way communication sound quality is little appreciable, the alerts are not understood and less when using the microphone, however to scare away potential threats works well. The batteries can last a few days but it also depends on the area where it is located, the more events detetcs and the more times the live view is used, the faster the batteries are discharged, I recommend choosing an appropriate configuration for each camera depending on where they were installed in the first instance. The phone app (Night Owl Protect) works well for basic issues however I find it lacks practicality. The event notifications and their own videos can not be seen all together, you have to view them by logging into each camera, not all videos are organized on one side, you can not format the hard drive from the app, notifications take a few seconds too long sometimes to be sent to the phone, the brightness and color settings of the cameras do not generate significant changes in image quality, the app is slow and sometimes crashes, etc.. I hope in the future the app will be updated as I think it has potential, at the end of the day the benefit is that you don't pay a subscription to use these features. I think that with a small discount, this set of 4 cameras and NVR 1TB Night Owl can be a good alternative, it is easy to install and configure, and if you do not have a monitor or TV with HDMI input, you can use only the phone for use.

    Wire-free battery powered Wi-Fi Cameras w/NVR

I have set up many wired security camera systems over the last few years. This is my first Night Owl system. The previous ones were different brands, either Power over Ethernet with an NVR or the old school, less expensive BNC wired system with a DVR. In terms of Wi-Fi, I’ve setup plenty of indoor cameras from several vendors, mostly with cloud storage, but this Night Owl - 10 Channel 4 Camera Wire Free 1080p 1TB NVR Security System is the first Wi-Fi Network Video Recorder The setup process is pretty straightforward and included in a large step by step print-out with pictures. Start with connecting the NVR to a wired Ethernet connection (no Wi-Fi available), connect the NVR to a monitor or TV with an HDMI cable (included), then power on the NVR with the included AC adapter. The recommendation on the screen is to download and use the Night Owl Protect App on your smartphone, but that did not work for my initial setup. I tried it a few times, even reinstalled the app and rebooted my phone, but it just got stuck at the “Configuring settings…0%” screen forever. I was able to easily continue the “Manual Setup” directly from the NVR. It quickly checked for a firmware update and then moved on to adding cameras. Once the install two rechargeable batteries into the camera, it will start talking to you pretty loudly. “Camera is in pairing mode”, "Please be patient as camera connects to Wi-Fi” and when it’s done “Woohoo, setup is now complete! Repeat the process for the remaining 3 cameras or up to 10 total channels. In terms of image quality 1080p is pretty standard nowadays for Wi-Fi camera systems, and perhaps due to being connected via Wi-Fi only, it still is a bit choppy for fast moving people or objects. The cameras have built-in spot light which is plenty bright and there is also a speaker and microphone for two way communication and alarms. Additionally there are motion detection sensors as well as decent infrared night vision. Back to the Night Owl Protect app for Android or iOS it will require you to register and set up an account on-line but you don’t have to pay for a subscription or cloud storage since the NVR comes with a local 1 TB hard drive for all motion-detected recording clips which is plenty of space. This is a promising system but the App is very basic and could use some improvements like landscape mode, pinch to zoom, camera settings, volume control, etc. It should include most of the settings you can get to directly from the NVR. I am also taking a star off because despite the cameras being completely wire-free and Wi-Fi connected to the NVR system, the NVR itself has to be connected to your home network via wired Ethernet, so that may limit your placement of the NVR and cameras especially if you want them installed outside the house.

This is almost everything you could ask for in a surveilance camera system, 1080 p to 4K full HD color, night vision and a night liight? 4 Wifi 4K cameras with alarms and spotlights on each one is packing 2 to 4 rechargeable batteries powered meaning they're indee, wireless? Are you kidding me? Did I mention the DVR with a terabyte of storage? Activity zones. Remote access from your smart device using the Night Owl app for Google Play Store or The App Store from Apple's IOS. The box is filled with many smaller boxes, but it's only frustrating if you went into the unboxing before reading htis review. So it's safe to say, you're gonna be ok. Inside you'll get the DVR, with power cord and mouse, for on screen navigation. 4) 4K cameras, 2) batteries but each camrea can house 4 batteries for longer life. 1) ethernet cable, 1) HDMI cable and 1) type C charging cable. Still no brick.( Points deducted for that one. It's super simple to set up, but there is a help line that you can call for any assistence. All of this and here's my favorite part. There's no fees for surveilence.. That alone makes it worth getting. Motion detections and a cute little " Smile, you're being recorded notice, for would-be intruders. If you wanted it. All notifications go straight to your phone with very low latency. Theother main issue is, considering the name says Wifi, this is only applied to the cameras. The DVR mose be hardwired to the modem. This means I'll need to get an expansion modem or just leave it up front, where I don't feel like I soend most of my at home time. Other than those little querks, this is a must have for any home or office. I definitely recommend this to everyone. Just go get another modem.

I received the Night Owl 10 Channel 6 Camera Wireless 2K 1TB NVR Security System in White. I was impressed with this being the first NVR system for me. Devices look and feel like high-quality modern security cameras, also lightweight and compact. As far as setup goes, Night Owl wireless security cameras are simple, but you’ll want to follow their quick online setup guide. All I had to do was plug in the power adapter to hear that the camera was in pairing mode. And adding the camera to your NVR was really easy; its built-in Wi-Fi quickly found the new camera and added it to an empty channel since everything runs over Wi-Fi. If you don’t hear the camera say it’s in pairing mode when you plug it in, just press the reset button until it says “resetting.” The Night Owl’s popular 1080p Indoor/Outdoor camera has a good night vision that views up to 100 feet. The cameras picked up fairly decent details at about 40 feet out, but beyond that, the resolution wasn’t so great. The two-way talk and infrared PIR motion sensing features are great, but those are pretty much standard these days, the viewing angle is only 100 degrees, which pales in comparison to many pan-tilt-zoom cameras. The multichannel NVR worked well. When it comes to feeling safe and secure in your home, it definitely helps to know that video is constantly being recorded. Overall, Night Owl might lack some bells and whistles, but still a great system. Since local storage is the way to go with Night Owl these days, you can simply use the 1 TB hard drive in the NVR to store your recordings. No monthly fees or anything like others have to keep your recordings. I love the fact that you can monitor your cameras on your smart phone on the go or on your TV when your home.

The cameras worked gteat. Very clear recordings but it is the Night Owl app that doesn't work right and we needed to be able to monitor while away from the house. When you come back home, the app won't reconnect with your phone and have to completely reset the cameras (by taking them dow & putting them ack up) and the system. Same issue if your phone happens to shut off or restart due to a system update. Best Buy & Geek Squad were great, it's the products app that is not good.

Although easy to set up. Battery life is horrendous (didn't last 3 days) even though marketing and sales claimed it lasts 6 months. Too many false positives and it misses actual events. I like the product as a whole. My only problem was that system only came with 8 rechargeable batteries. Its 4 cameras, but each camera requires 4 batteries. I had to hunt down the other 8 batteries for my camera system that cost 14.00 a piece

Seems like a good system. Access thru App on phone. It alerts when motion is detected. Not overly sensitive either as we have hummingbirds around one spot. Battery life may be lacking for number of batteries in purchase. We need to order additional batteries.

These "wire free" cameras sounds great at first but quickly disappoint as soon as you try to get them up and running. First, the pkg ONLY comes with 2 batteries for each camera although the cameras require 4 batteries/each. Second, each camera requires 4 batteries for optimal performance and since the pkg only comes with 2/each, the battery life is significantly shortened. As most security cameras, they should be running 24/7 to capture any activity in its view. My cameras (4) only lasted 30-40 days before needing to be re-charged. That's not very efficient if I need to change the batteries out every 30 days. Also, I will have to purchase 2-3 more sets of batteries to have extra on hand when they run out of charge. This just isn't a very well thought out product OR the consumer isn't provided all the tools within the package to perform efficiently. Additionally, the customer support is outsourced which has the same BS solution to any connectivity issues. (Reset device = turn it off, on). I couldn't get the cameras to work remotely and the support staff had not solutions although I told them "reset" the device doesn't work. Lastly, these were NOT returnable after 30 days which doesn't give the customer enough time to TEST out the product! That's over $500 wasted down the drain with NO help/supper for their (outsourced) support staff who's only advice is to "reset" the device which translates to "turn it off and turn it back on." Please DO NOT pursue this product or any items from this company as it's another TRASH manufacturer just out there to trick the consumer into a poorly made, no customer support, price of crap time.

Thank you for the feedback and sorry to hear you are unhappy with your purchase. A few points of clarification as there seems to be some confusion. Our cameras only require 2 batteries to operate. They do have the ability to hold four in an effort to extend time between charges. The lifespan between charges is dependent on your connection and chosen settings. How much activity is in the viewing area as well as your chosen level of sensitivity all impact battery life. Unfortunately we don't control the return policies of individual retailers and always advise checking those policies before purchasing to ensure they meet your expectations. If you are continuing to have issues we are happy to support you as your purchase comes with a 1-Year warranty to protect against material defect of failure. Please let us know if we may assist with ensuring you get the best out of your system. We look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, Night Owl SP Digital Support Team

Its ok. For being wireless its earned 1 star. 2nd star for being a relatively good system (Night Owl). Its a pretty darn good video. No 2 way, even though its advertised as being 2 way audio. The battery life is HORRIBLE, WORST EVER! I bought the other batteries to "extend" the life AND the wall charger to charge the battieries, which sucks. I don't recommend or would buy again.

We apologize for the issue you have been experiencing. Battery based systems are great for quick installation, but are impacted by cold temperatures impacting charge of the batteries as well as frequency of alerts and other challenges. You might look at changing the sensitivity settings of your cameras if they are going off more frequently than needed. This would save power usage. Also, our cameras are capable of holding 4 batteries to extend the lifespan between charges which we encourage. We also offer extra batteries with charger on our NightOwlSP.com site so you can rotate 4 for 4 batteries each switch, which might help. Thanks, Night Owl SP Digital Support Team

the cameras and wnvr seems solid. but they stopped working after 2 days. i have 90 days to return so i figured id call in to night owl and give them another chance. after one tech having no idea and telling me id get a call back in an hour (saturday) didnt get called back until monday. i was at work and they cant help you if you arent at the system. told me to call back saturday. i did, got another person that had no idea and again said, wait for a call back... 4 days now, no call back. its undortunate because they met every need i was looking for in a security system, which not many systems do. so ill drive an hour one way to my closest best buy and try out reolink.
