Excellent WiFi security DVR cam system, no fees!!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Loving this new security system setup. I’ve been using one of the more popular subscription based cameras for a while (with great results), but adding more cameras is pricey and I really hate having to pay for another subscription service. This Night Owl system does just about everything it did, but with better WiFi range, sharper resolution, slightly better night vision, and the major detail: 1 TB of local storage. How long your storage lasts before being overwritten depends on how many cameras you’re using, but so far with 3 cameras mounted I’ve been able to go back through 5 days of footage. Navigating through events and the timeline is simple enough, though the app acts up a little when trying to review really old footage through the timeline. Scanning through events is much simpler and the app makes it easy to download a clip to your phone. Speaking of which, I was a little confused with the marketing literature about whether I could review the footage from a remote location on my phone or if I needed to be within bluetooth range. I’m happy to say, the answer is the former. You can be just about anywhere with data reception and remotely review events or live view the footage from every camera on your phone. I do wish I could review footage from a website, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. I believe it’s for security reasons, because web browsers can be a big vulnerability point. Night Owl emphasizes that the footage is securely protected from hacking and so far I have no reason to doubt them. Setting up the cameras and DVR base is pretty straight-forward and surprisingly a bit easy. I recommend synching all of the cameras to the base before installing them, because they need to be near each other during the initial setup. What’s awesome is how far the WiFi range works and that the cameras stay synched after unplugging and moving them. I have all 6 setup so far and was delighted to see that all I had to do was plug it back in and it automatically reconnected to the DVR without doing anything else. Unfortunately, while it’s a “wireless” camera system you still have a power wire for each camera to run. It’s easier than making really long cable runs to the DVR base, but finding an outlet to tap into can be challenging, especially if you mount them up high. I don’t know if Night Owl makes a rechargeable battery pack to plug into, but it’s not that hard to piece together if needed. The daytime and night vision are both excellent. 2k resolution makes it easier to spot identifying features when zooming in, but the DVR base is compatible with the Night Owl 4k cameras if you want to upgrade. And while it comes with 6 cameras, it’s a 10 channel DVR base, so there’s room to add 4 more cameras as well. There’s a little bit of a delay in the live feed, but it’s on par with the other WiFi cameras I’ve used. Using the app, you can program notifications and activity zones for each camera and it’s smart enough to detect and alert you if it’s a person, car, or animal. It doesn’t have face ID recognition, but I’m fine with general person notifications. The motion activated spotlights are a cool feature and I like how you can program it to stay on or blink. The cams also record audio and have 2 way communication ability, which is especially handy when talking to a solicitor at the door. There’s also 3 pre-programmed audible alarms, but I really wish it would let me record my own. Overall, I’m very happy with this Night Owl security system and am excited to finally have local storage and playback without paying a monthly fee. Outside of running a power wire, the cameras are fairly simple to set up and provide excellent video in both day and night time. It also comes at a solid price point for a wireless 6 camera system, which is less than $100 a camera and that’s not even factoring in the DVR. Highly recommended! PROS - Sharp 2k cameras - Excellent night vision - Easy to sync cameras to base - Simple WiFi setup for base - 1 TB hard drive local storage (no subscription needed) - Easy to download video clips through app - Motion activated spotlights - 2 way audio - 3 preprogrammed audible alerts - Can review and playback on app from anywhere - Programmed voice alert is loud - Person and vehicle detection work well - Can program zones - Do not need to attach monitor - System is 4k ready - Outstanding WiFi range - Good build quality - Cameras easy to mount - Easy to use Android and iOS app - No need to set up cameras again if unplugging and moving them - Base software is easy to navigate (if using monitor) - Rated to work in -4 to up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit CONS - Not totally wireless. Still need to run power - Viewing angle doesn’t seem wide - Finicky sharing access with other users - Cannot view feed from website - No app for PC - Cannot custom record voice alert - Cannot get it to sync with Google Assistant

NOT WIRELESS but feature packed and Flexible
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ok, with security at an all-time high for both homeowners and business owners today, there are tons of systems to choose from. You’ve got several brand names offered from security companies installed systems, the big two big name companies offering a la carte security devices with paid monitoring, and then you got the store bought diy systems that offer prebuilt packaged systems with free self-monitoring and alerts. The Night Owl 10 channel 4K WiFi NVR security system is just that. This system comes complete with a 1 TB hard drive and 6 Wi-Fi IP 2K cameras and 10 channels allowing for added cameras when needed. I must mention that this system IS NOT WIRELESS as packaged. The included cameras are powered by AC adapters, BUT, has the capability to add true wireless cameras, so please keep that in mind when reading this and considering purchase. Setup is standard and easy enough as things go with self-guided animated bluetooth phone apps. Simply download the app, attach antennas and plug in DVR to power and ethernet, and then follow along and listen to instructions being given from the cameras and app. So now I will start with the “WiFi IP AC powered Cameras”. The cameras are of great quality and feature packed, BUT, they are not wireless. They are powered with an AC to DC power adapter and must be plugged in to an electrical outlet for power. They are however connected to the NVR 1TB DVR via the systems dedicated and independent network. So essentially the cameras can be placed anywhere as long as there is a power source available and it is within range of the network. The cameras are built for indoor/outdoor placement with 100ft night vision and an 80 degree viewing angle which is okay, but I wish it was a little wider. The cameras include built in deterrent spotlight that can be activated by motion or via the Bluetooth app manually along with 2-way audio for listening or speaking just like the other big name brands. One feature that I greatly like is the microSD card slot on board the camera for backup of monitoring. This ensures that if there is spotty WiFi connection at any time, the camera is still recording. Although the cameras are not true wireless, I have grown to like this feature of AC power much better than the battery-operated cameras. For one, I do not have to get up to the camera and remove the battery every 20 -30 days to recharge it. I currently have 1 battery operated wireless camera and have had the battery die and not charge or replace the battery for several days. The only down fall is finding a suitable location for proper video surveillance while being close enough to an electrical outlet. For an outdoor home security system this is a preliminary problem for setup, but you can tap into or extend power from an existing outlet or junction box and run a short length of Romex wire to place an outlet where needed. I do recommend a certified electrician to perform this work for you. You can also drill a small hole through the wall and run the 9-10ft wire from the adapter to plug in to an outlet inside or just place the cameras inside near a window. Now if you are planning on getting this system for a business or indoor monitoring of your home, this is the easiest and perfect solution for that. Now if you are willing to shell out some additional funds for some wireless cameras, the Night Owl system's Flex Protect ecosystem gives the ability to mix and match compatible wireless cameras with this system for a tailored security monitoring to meet any unique needs. I have yet to go this route but if I'm expanding coverage outdoors, monitoring specific zones, or enhancing indoor security, I know that I can do so with this system. With the Bluetooth app and the Wi-Fi IP cameras, I was able to establish a connection between the cameras and my network, granting me access to real-time feeds and recorded footage. The 2K resolution of the cameras display a level of clarity and detail that's truly remarkable. I am able to identify facial features to almost deciphering license plate numbers depending on the distance. The app allows several features and settings of the cameras from the motion sensitivity to deterrent alerts from the spotlight or audible siren. It is also very easy to save and/or export recordings when needed. In conclusion, the Night Owl 10 channel 4K WiFi NVR security system has added a new dimension and flexibility for home and business security systems. With its AC powered cameras, secure independent wireless network, effortless Bluetooth app setup, and the adaptive Flex Protect ecosystem, this system allows for growth and ease of setup. As a homeowner who values security and adaptability, I can confidently attest that Night Owl has delivered a solution that is second to none. For anyone seeking a comprehensive, customizable, and user-centric security system, the Night Owl 10 channel 4K WiFi NVR security system is an investment that will continue to pay for itself. Just remember that initially out of the box, it is AC powered cameras but can add additional wireless cameras if needed.

They can also be rotated and tilted remotely from the NVR. The NVR has a built-in siren and can be accessed remotely from a smartphone or tablet. It is easy to install and use, and it offers excellent image quality and night vision. The only real downside is that some users have reported connectivity issues with the cameras. Here are some additional details about the system: The NVR can record up to 10 cameras simultaneously. The cameras have a field of view of 110 degrees. The night vision range is up to 100 feet. The NVR has a built-in 1TB hard drive, but you can also add an external hard drive. Good company, but the product needs some changes
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Night Owl has a lot of different systems. I've reviewed their wired Ethernet system in the past and this time I'm looking at their wireless camera system. The biggest difference between the two is that with this system, the cameras receive their power from a power cable and transmit the images back to the NVR via Wi-Fi. After unpacking everything, I connected the NVR to a monitor, connected an Ethernet cable from the NVR to my switch, connected a mouse to the NVR, and loaded the Night Owl Protect app on my phone. I made the mistake of scanning for the cameras with my phone and added them to the app. This wasn't the right approach. The NVR has its own DHCP server and runs its own Wi-Fi network. The cameras are not supposed to connect to your home network. There are pros and cons to this approach. On the positive side, it keeps the video traffic off of your local network. On the negative side, if you are trying to cover a large area and have network extenders on your network, they don't help any with this network. I had to relocate the NVR 3 times in order to find a location where all of the cameras could connect to it. In that location, there is no way for me to connect a monitor, which I felt was a nice feature of the system. I also found that the signal to a couple of them is weak, causing the video to be jerky. Once you setup the NVR, you need to select it in the app and then scan the QR codes found on the cameras, to add them to the NVR. After putting your cameras into position and hooking them up, you can use the app to define the areas that you want the cameras to monitor. This allows you to limit the areas that the camera will monitor for motion and people. It allowed me to not monitor the street in front of my house and a flag that is always flapping in the breeze. Those areas are still recorded to the NVR when motion is detected in the monitored items, but won't send me motion alerts that I don't need to see. The cameras have 2 bright lights on them that activate whenever they detect motion. They also have 2-way audio so you can hear what is going on and talk to someone that might be near the camera. The camera can be configured to automatically say "Smile" or sound a siren when they detect something. I don't find that overly necessary, as the lights are already an indicator to someone trying to get in, that they have been seen. You can also control if the light turns on or not when motion is detected. The system can alert you to any activity via phone notification. All of these settings can be controlled on a camera-by-camera basis. With the wired system, Night Owl provided power to the cameras via 60ft Ethernet cables. If that wasn't long enough, you could always buy longer Ethernet cables. These cameras need to get power as well, but comes with a 2.5 by 1.5 by 1 inch power supply with a cord just over 9 feet long with a round connector end. The camera has a 19 inch pigtail that the cable end plugs into. The opening in the pigtail is slightly recessed to provide some weather protection. This is one of the huge drawbacks to this system. They are assuming that you have a weather protected outlet that can handle this power adapter within about 10 feet of the camera location. I don't know about your house, but I don't have any outlets within 10 feet of where I would put a camera, yet alone one that is weather protected and can handle the power supply. In fact, every camera I setup needed at least a 25 foot extension cord and I had to wrap the power supply and the end of the extension cord in plastic and electrical tape. In one case I had to put a multiway adapter on the extension cord so I could plug in 2 cameras and wrap all of that in plastic and tape. None of this is very attractive looking and it a huge drawback to this system. I liked the Ethernet wired system. This one not as much. The length of the cords is a major drawback and being on their own network may require you to get additional network distance extenders to be able to reach all of the cameras. If you have a small area to cover, this setup may be fine, but if you have a large area to cover, and not a lot of outdoor electrical outlets, this isn’t the right system for you.

Easy to setup. Easy to use. Some lacking features.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This isn't my first NightOwl camera system and it's very similar to the older 4k system I had before but, even with the downgrade in resolution, I feel like this is a pretty good upgrade. The biggest thing for me was the setup. The old 4K cameras I was using were all mounted directly to the wall/ceiling. The only detachable part was unscrewing the whole camera from the base but then the camera just hung there by the cord. It was cumbersome and annoying to install. These are much much nicer to install. The cameras come with a base plate that screws to the wall and then the camera is able to just slide onto it. It's also possible to just unscrew the camera and use a standard threaded camera mount if you don't want to use the included mount. The cameras also don't come with a huge bulky antenna. Everything about install was nicer with this system. Setting up the whole thing was pretty much as easy as it can be. You have the option of connecting directly to a TV and controlling things with the tiny mouse that's included. If you were using this as a business security system, you'd probably go that route. You can also choose not to connect to the internet with it and just use it to locally record your cameras (and review the footage from the TV it's connected to). But the simplest was to set things up (and the way I did it) is to just plug in the NVR power and use the NightOwl Protect app. You need a NightOwl account but you still have the option to not connect to the internet if you didn't connect an ethernet cable. Then you just follow a couple steps in the app and the NVR is connected to your account. Setting up the cameras is just as simple. You can do them all at once or just set up one at a time. Cameras enter pairing mode when you first plug them in and it's only a couple taps and about 30 seconds of time before the cameras will tell you they're ready to go with a hilarious "Woohoo!" voice. I set up my cameras one by one and it was just really easy. Checking the cameras and settings from a TV directly connected to the NVR is OK. It's fairly limited in what you can do but you can view all the cameras just fine in multiple different layouts and you have some control over some settings like recording options (events and/or continuous). It's straightforward but you need the NightOwl Protect app to control all the settings. I would love to see a pretty big overhaul of the app to make it feel a bit more modern but it's functional. Connecting all 6 cameras included as well as 1 extra of my older 4K cameras works great by just selecting which camera I want to view. There's a mutliview mode too but it stretches the images weirdly so I just pick the camera I want. You can control all the settings for the cameras from the app as well as what kind of recording settings you want. You can even set up continuous recording but it's strangely named "scheduled recording" with a schedule between midnight and 11:59 already filled in for you. I wasn't able to set the recording quality all the way up to high in the app but I think it might have been a visual bug because the video feeds were still 1440p and 15 fps (the 15 fps was a nice upgrade from the old 8 fps on the 4K cameras). There's also a slot on each camera for a microSD card. I didn't try and use it but it's nice to have since the hard drive died in the old NVR and even installing a new hard drive didn't seem to work (like the controller was dead and not just the hard drive) so it's nice to have a backup recording option that can just record straight to the microSD card. If I had one huge complaint about the whole system, it's a lack of native HomeKit support. I would love to be able to natively add these cameras to my Home. Luckily, the NVR does export each channel as an RTSP stream so with some Homebridge magic, you can get them to work if you'd like. Overall, NightOwl could certainly be better, but for the cost it's a really decent system. Everything "just works" for the most part and you don't have to do much after it's all installed and set up. If you're looking for an all in one system where you don't need to run wires everywhere, that's really easy to set up, look into this one.

Great Self Monitoring with no monthly fee
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The home security camera market has become flooded with so many options that it really is hard to find which one will work the best for you. There are tons of things to consider, does it require a monthly fee? Is there an app accessible outside the home network, does it integrate with other products, and above all does it record video well. These Night Owl cameras might not check every box but they do provide some great features that may make it perfect for you. The main selling point here is the local storage and wireless setup. So right off the bat, no monthly fee! all your video can be stored locally on the included hard drive, which you just don't get with some of the other wifi based cameras. On top of that this is one of the only hard drive based camera setups I've seen that doesn't require you to run ethernet cables all over your house to reach each camera. This really made the set up a breeze. All I needed to worry about was finding a power outlet close by so I could power the camera. So the main focus, video quality. It is great. Using the app I can see that it recorded video very clearly in both day and night and since 6 cameras were included I had plenty of sight into all areas around my house. The light on each camera also doubled in lighting up the video and acting as a security light. Now the software side of the house is a bit lacking. The app and integrations aren't as built out as you may see from some of the big name tech names in the camera space. But given the focus here on self monitoring and easy of use, I can see where that might not be the biggest focus for the target market for these cameras. Overall I'm very impressed with how well these cameras perform and the ability to self monitor my video feed without worrying about paying a monthly fee to get the full use of the product. Would recommend.

Simple and reliable security system
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Night Owl 10 Channel 6 Camera Wireless 2K 1TB NVR Security System is an excellent and easy to setup security system. The system comes with a 1TB Wi-Fi NVR with antennas, NVR power adapter, ethernet cable, USB mouse, six 2K spotlight cameras with six 9ft camera power adapters, and mounting hardware. All the accessories are packed securely in the box. The cameras are capable of motion and people detection, audio alerts, spotlight with 24x7 recordings, and microSD slot for local backup. The camera is outdoor weather resistant and connects wirelessly to the NVR via an independent wireless network without the need for an internet connection. The only wired connection to the camera is the power cable from a wall outlet. The entire setup can be done on the Night Owl Protect app using the Bluetooth connection without the need for a monitor or a TV. The app also gives you the ability to customize the camera settings, notification alerts, control spotlight and siren, record voice messages, and view live as well as recorded footage. You still have the option to use a TV or a monitor if you want to go that route. The NVR has 10 channels, which means the system can handle an additional 4 cameras if you want to expand. There are no fees or subscription needed for any of the monitoring. Plus, you can set up these cameras for indoor as well as outdoor use. Once you pair the camera with the NVR, you can then mount it anywhere within the range. I am surprised by the quality of the videos during daytime or night even from the farthest camera mounted from the NVR. The only thing I would change is for the cameras to be powered by solar panels so they could be completely wireless. If you are looking for a one system without wires to run every part of your home and are willing to expand with additional cameras in the future, you cannot go wrong with this one.

Perfect in home camera system!!!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Night Owl has made home security very easy with this one. You get a 10-channel 1 Tb DVR that connects with six included cameras. The installation was almost too easy. Do you need a nearby power outlet, a Wi-Fi connection, or a LAN cable, and you're up and going? Each camera includes a super cool spotlight. Also, get two-way communication via included Microphone and speaker in each camera. The camera boasts a 2K resolution, which is apparent even in night mode. And you also get almost instantaneous alerts from motion from cameras which is a feature that I needed. It's also expandable to Wi-Fi doorbells and more cameras that Night Owl has available. Making this system even more expandable in the future. The camera resolution is at 2560 x 1440. And the cameras are usable indoors and outdoors, so placement is almost limitless. AC outlet, and you're up and going. But the night vision distance of about a hundred feet is perfect for backyards and patio areas. The wireless range on these is about 300 ft, as listed on the package, but they work fine for me in my backyard area. I place one on the fence at the back of my yard. There is an app available in all app stores, including Android, Apple, iOS, Windows, and Mac. There are Google Assistant capable as well. Night Owl is the one if you're looking for an excellent easy-to-set-up security system. I highly recommend Night Owl.

You can mount your cameras in virtually any area that you can get an AC connection to. All the cameras connect to the base wirelessly, but each camera needs a wired connection to an AC outlet. Before mounting your camera its a good idea to power it on first, to make sure it is still within the wireless range of your base. Even though the base connects to your home/work internet the cameras will only use the proprietary WIFI from the base itself, so you can not choose a mounting location based on your home/business WIFI coverage. If your new camera is within range of the base, all you need to do is plug it in. There are audio cues from the camera to let you know what it's doing and when it's ready to pair. From your phone or the user interface on the base, all you need to do is view connected devices and then in the cameras area click on the "+" or add a camera. the app will then start searching for the camera in pairing mode. Once found it only takes a few seconds to finish the setup. After the setup completes you can view the feed, or change that particular cameras settings. Each camera can have independent settings or you can copy the settings from one camera to all the other cameras. In the settings you can choose activity zones to monitor, types of triggers to look for, and even what hours you want to schedule recordings for. AND YES all the cameras can be set to record 24/7 if you want. Just set that up in the recording settings, and hit the "advanced" button and set a schedule for all days of the week from 12AM to 12AM. You will be able to still view any triggers that are set, but also everything along the 24hr timeline for each day. All triggers and recordings can be viewed through the phone app or the base. CURRENTLY the PC CMS app (an app you can download on any remote desktops or laptops) is not functioning correctly and has no viewing access to your devices. Night Owl is aware of the problem and their tech team is trying to work on a fix for the issue, but they currently do not have an ETA for the fix yet, but they have indicated they will put out an email to customers when the pc app is ready again. Viewing everything on the phone looks good but is not as nice as checking everything out on a decent size monitor. I have a 32" monitor connected to my base and it's a lot easier to see more details during playback and live feeds. While viewing playbacks from the base the feed can be watched in hyper speeds up to 8x. PLEASE be aware that when you enter the playback mode on the base you are only allowed to view 2 streams at a time. On the left hand side you should be able to see all your cameras that are connected to your base. Click on up to 2 cameras at a time to view the desired feeds. In the phone app you can only view one camera at a time for playbacks. However, the phone app is capable of showing multiple live feeds on the same page. With all my cameras set to 24/7 recordings I am able to go back up to 2 weeks on the currently installed 1TB HDD. Night Owl support says that the HDD can be upgraded with either a 2.5" or 3.5" HDD. The max size accepted is 8TB. Only 7200RPM or higher drives are recommended/accepted. This pack comes with six 2K wireless cameras, but the base is capable of handling up to 10 devices. You can buy more 2K cameras or almost any of the other wireless camera options offered by Night Owl, including their 4K cameras and WIFI IP doorbell cameras. Notifications can be set through the phone app as far as what you want to be notified of. Overall the system is very versatile and easy to customize. The video quality is very good. Recordings can be exported or saved to your phone. Shared access can also be granted. The cameras are IP-65 rated and can be used indoors or outdoors. They have night vision and 2 way audio to communicate with visitors or scare away intruders. A spotlight can also be set to activate on triggers to further scare intruders away. Plus the biggest bonus of all - no fees for anything. Aside from the PC app, the system has been very reliable with live viewing and timeline playbacks. I have noticed that some of the triggered recordings don't always record for long enough or sometimes can miss very fast objects. However with the 24/7 recording it's easy enough to check out the triggered time on the timeline to see more. Night Owl has really done a good job with the quality of the cameras and the whole system, and has earned a lot of respect for not charging customers to view their own recordings.
