I wanted a camera with excellent zoom, lens options and of course waterproof and shockproof. This camera is amazing. Some of the shots I get are pro quality no doubt. This is a great compact camera with similar qualities as a professional one. The one downside is that the lens cap is detachable and can easily be lost. Would love it if they would just attach a string and tie it on.

I bought this camera for my wife's birthday in July 2014. The first time it was used underwater in August 2015, the battery compartment leaked, which is also where the memory card is stored. We were unable to retrieve a week's worth of sailing photos from the Grenadines, bad thing. When I went back to Best Buy, the month out of warranty sent me just out the door, no help. I went to Nikon and told them what happened, they could not have cared less. They want me to pay $350 for an eval and repair, I doubt the body only cost much more. I have been a faithful Nikon customer for 40 years, but this was the last one. If they want to treat me that way, I can buy a different brand. I still have my 35mm F1 body, but I think E-Bay can cure that for me. I would not trust this body underwater again even if they repair it, I would not recommend to anyone to buy and depend on Nikon to stand behind this. I probably won't use Best Buy either, they did not seem to care much as well.

Let's be clear. I have been a fan of Nikon Cameras since my darkroom days. I have used Nikon Cameras happily for decades. They have never failed me… Until this weekend when I took the Nikon 1 AW1 out to catch the kids in the surf and the camera just stopped. She wouldn’t turn on. She just died… And let’s be clear, I know how to clean a camera. I have Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS5D that has worked beautifully for years. I have taken it on mud runs, through heavy surf and diving and it has never given me an ounce of grief. I am a bit obsessive about cleaning the camera after any kind of salty or dirty excursion and I think it has paid off as the camera has taken great photos with no hassles. Then for my birthday, I received the Nikon AW1 and, yes, I shelved that Lumix like it was yesterday’s news. I, again, admit I have an unnatural loyalty to Nikon as well as being excited to leave the fixed lens, all weather, compact camera world for the ability to have a DSLR (albeit compact) all weather experience. I was thrilled. The camera did a great job on it’s first outing taking some high quality stills and video in and out of the surf. I was amazed at the quality and the versatility of the camera. In fact, I read the instruction manual cover to cover as there are so many well-designed features (especially for underwater usage). After that first use, I carefully bathed the camera in warm water to remove salt and sand. I, then washed it again in running water. I dried it with a towel thoroughly and let it sit over night just to make sure that no moisture would hurt the camera. The next morning, I removed the memory card got my pictures, cleaned the battery/memory card compartment and set upon another day of taking beach pictures. The camera was great for two hours but once I took her into the water with me in an attempt to capture footage from the nose of my boogey board- she died. Immediately, I left the water and dried the camera on the beach. I was worried about leakage and so with dry hands on a clean towel, I opened the battery and saw that water had entered the battery and already corroded it. After sending the camera in I was deeply disappointment to be sent an evaluation and I had to pay $340.00. Because there was sand on the camera the warranty was no longer. The camera was only opened near sand after it stopped working. So irritated as essentially I was hobbled to replace the camera or let it die? If I am getting the same camera back (which I am) I worry that the faulty workmanship will again leave me with a not waterproof camera. So disappointed with NIKON and this product! Buyer beware I followed the instructions, was cautious, mindful and still this camera was not waterproof.

Buy Protection Plan - Great Camera

Great camera quality under and above water. One flaw is the flash compartment is not completely waterproof. We have used the camera on vacations for 2 years and just this past trip we opened the flash and the camera died in my hands. Protection Plan saved our $800 investment, It's Nikon's design flaw but after that 1yr warranty you are on your own. Nikons site has a bunch of this same problem. BUY THE PROTECTION PLAN!!

This camera looks great on paper. It shoots mediocre pictures outdoors and underwater. On the third snorkeling trip, it flooded. Yes I followed all the care instructions and never dropped it. I sent it to Nikon and after more than two months declared that it was unrepairable and that the warrantee did not cover it. With accessories, this camera was close to a $1000 mistake. I will never buy another Nikon product in my life. Avoid my costly error and purchase one of Best Buys' other brands of camera.
