If you are considering buying this lens, then you have already done your homework and determined that Nikkor lenses offer some of the best glass on the market. If you are looking to upgrade from the 18-55mm kit lens that came with your DSLR, look no further. I initially purchased the Nikkor 18-200mm lens, which I was very happy with, so that is what I will focus on for comparison. You might also compare this lens with the Nikkor 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens, if you’re willing to pay a few hundred dollars more for a better aperture range and 3 additional lens elements. From my perspective, any minor improvement in image quality (and I would really have to be convinced of this, I don’t notice any) is immediately negated by the heavier weight of the more expensive 300mm lens. Another 10 ounces (or 280 grams) on top of your solid-body DSLR doesn’t sound like a lot until it’s been hanging on your neck or shoulders several hours into a hike – trust me! Compared with the 18-200mm Nikkor lens, this 18-300mm really does give you a significant boost in zoom capacity. You don’t really want to use either extreme too often if you want to avoid image distortion, so having more focal length range to work with is always better in my opinion. Like other Nikkor lenses, the 18-300 is solidly-built, responsive, and produces clear, beautiful images. Both lenses can be “locked” at 18mm, which is a nice feature – though I have not experienced any lens creep at all with the 18-300 while I did with the 18-200. This 18-300 lens feels lighter yet sturdier and more compact than the 18-200, which is even more amazing when you consider what you’re getting for not that much more money. I learned photography on an old Pentax film camera with a 35mm lens, which meant I was used to zooming with my feet to get the shot I wanted. Having the simply ridiculous range from fairly wide at 18mm to a great zoom at 300mm means you can do just about anything you can imagine and (legally) pull off without ever having to change lenses. You can capture an entire mountain range in one second and then grab a quality shot of the wildlife that just appeared hundreds of yards away without missing a beat. The capabilities of this lens are mind-blowing and you will appreciate having it with you on any type of trip you might take. Like all automatic/manual Nikkor lenses, the focus and zoom grip rings are responsive and intuitive if you want to quickly take control during a shot. The vibration reduction will spoil you and open up new possibilities in terms of what you can capture in less than ideal conditions. If you are just starting out with a DX DSLR, this or an 18-200mm should be your go-to lens. If you pick up this great zoom and a 35mm fixed lens, that may be all you need in your bag for a long while!

My Nikon auto focus 70-300mm zoom lens died while I was traveling (camping) out west for 3 months. Two days before we launched on a 2-week Colorado River trip through Grand Canyon it stopped focusing. Best Buy saved the day. I found this 18-300 mm Nikon lens online and drove 2 hours south to purchase it. The lens performed flawlessly in the Canyon. It captured jaw-dropping vistas, waterfalls, trails following steep precipices and slot canyons. It also shot wildflowers at close range. It continues to WOW me post Grand Canyon at Puenlo Ruins, in cities, on road shots while riding and in deserts. The shots are crisp at close and long range. The VR was good enough to give me focused shots while floating in the raft day after day. It also was good at low light compared to the old lens. And I captured a number of bird shots in the canyon from quite a distance. The colors of my photos are much more vibrant and distinct. The images don't require as much post processing as the old lens. I took a chance buying a new lens at the last minute before launching on the trip of a lifetime. But it performed flawlessly. I have proof of the amazing things we are seeing and doing. Thanks again, Best Buy.

I already had Nikon 18-140 and 70-300 lenses, but I brought my D5500 Nikon body into my local BB to try out the AF-S Dx 18-300 F/3.5-6.3g Vr just to see if the cost would justify itself, as all the reviews I read everywhere suggested. Obviously, they did, and since then, the lens hasn't left my body and I sold the other two. I'm not a professional photographer. I'm a traveler who loves to record and photograph what I see and experience, and that means that I may see something close up, or far away, within the same minute, and I haven't the time or desire to change lenses. This 18-300 has changed my photographing life and made it so much easier, and lighter. I recently had a job covering a rocket launch and was able to capture wide-angle views to include the crowd and in less than one second later, capture close-up views of the gimbaling rocket exhaust. Yes, I'm educated enough to know that one item cannot be perfect to fit every extreme, but this lens is so small, compact, fast, and responsive in focus that I've stopped the infinite quest for "another lens."

So far, as sharp as any lens I've used

This "one lens to rule them all" has so far lived up to my expectations. I've used it several times now and I can't tell any difference between the images it captures and the images from my other DX lenses on either my D5600 or my D7500. That being said, you really have to ask yourself how often you will use the zoom beyond 100mm. Go back over your zoom lens photos and you might find that you actually take almost all of your photos in the under 55mm range that the most common (and inexpensive) kit lens provides, and certainly under the 140mm that the 18-140mm lens covers. So, if that's the case, think twice. This lens is also, of course, heaver than the 18-55mm, although for what it does, it is considered light weight. But if you are looking for a one lens solution, perhaps for travel, this will do the job. If you add the 35mm 1.8 and the wide angle on your cell phone (and even wider lens attachments), you will have 99.99% of the lens equipment you will ever need.

This lense was a great overall lense for travel. The shallow end of the lense gave a bit of distortion but it was really nothing terrible. In the mid range it seemed great. The colors all looked great. The lense itself function nicely with no issues. No lense creap. The only thing Was at the long end sometimes it seemed as if the photos were a little blurry. I’m sure it was me since I was shooting freehand and extended to 300mm. It does have vibration control but I’m sure that can only do so much. Overall for travel and to have an all in one lense I loved it. Wasn’t th best in low light conditions but with the VR I was actually able to take decent photos. I’d recommend this product. Definately no where near as sharp as fixed lense but for the convenience of having and all in on to zoom from 18 to 300 was awesome. Really helped me capture up close shots and distance on my trip to Rome and Paris.

I bought the Nikon D5500 kit that came with the body plus 2 lenses. Great camera. Great pictures. Then I heard about the Nikon 18-300mm, f3.5. The 150-300mm that comes with the kit is an f4.5. The 18-300mm lens cost more than the whole kit but it is worth it. This lens replaces both lenses, and this lens is sharper than the other 2 lenses, and does a better job in low light. The overall diameter of the lens is larger which lets more light in. This is now my go-to lens. Since buying this lens I have been able to take pictures suitable for framing and displaying them in my house. This is a great lens !!.

Please don't pay attention to the negative reviews online. The telephoto capability is amazing and the quality of the images is equally impressive. These pompous photographers whether they do it for a living or not should appreciate the quality of this lens and how its truly the only all in one option you can attach to the camera and never have to worry. Beautiful clear images at 300mm of my kids out in the baseball field or in the batters box and all the other parents can't get over the images I'm taking and I'm just an enthusiast at this point. The research I did almost steered me away but I went with my gut and thank god I purchased this lens to compliment my Nikon D500.

If you like to travel this is what u need, don’t think twice •I looked at a lot of lenses before settling on this new Nikkor 18-300, and I must say I'm very pleased with the choice. The lens is compact but has a great zoom range. The main reason I desired to buy it is because is perfect to travel you don’t need to Carrier so many lens to get the shot you want. So far i love this Len and most importantly I’m ready for my coming up trip. (I leave you with some photos taken with the on “300mm” )

Great travel lens. Zooms from landscape to wildlife before the animal or bird gets away. Not having to keep changing lenses along with the dust skirt helps to keep dust off the image sensor. Lightweight and small size adds no more noticeable weight and obstruction to an active lifestyle over the 18-105mm. Use care when focusing long. Lens hood and bag are NOT included in this sale although Best Buy conveniently includes their pictures in the item description to lead you into thinking they are. In fact, on return to the store I found that they do not even carry these items! This is my reason for the lower then perfect score on this lens.

I bought this camera lens as I do a great deal of hiking and backpacking.. I was looking for a lens that would give me a broad range without the hassle of carrying other lenses or having to switch lenses when that perfect picture moment arises and you inevitably have the wrong lens on the camera. It is lighter then the stock lens that came with the camera and I am happy with the durability thus far. As with any lens that has such a broad range the quality of sharpness is slightly diminished at each extreme of the lens. Although unless you have a trained eye you will barely notice this. Great picture quality. Very happy with my purchase.

After a couple of weeks testing this thing, I descided to hang onto it. It's expensive considering you could buy a couple of decent prime lenses for the same amount, but I wanted to by a DX lens with VR for my D7000, and something light and with a decent range. Distortion on the wide end is there, but the in camera correction (after upgrading firmware) seems to work fine. In bright light the lens works decently, and on a tripod it is capable of capturing starlight. I docked it for price and no focus ring (a feature - or lack of feature of G lenses). To focus to infinity in the dark you need to focus it during the day. Otherwise it works great, and is much lighter and quieter than my older, heavier FX lenses.

If you can only carry one lens for your Nikon SLR camera and you need to go from 18 mm wide angle to 300 mm telephoto in a single photo session, this is the one. It has no noticeable chromic distortion. Some fish-eye effect like distortion occurs at very wide angles. You can also end up with the glare shield blocking part of the picture at very wide angles. I have no other complaints. The lens is stabilized, it is easy to use, and it is versatile. It does well with low light. It is heavier and a little longer than other lenses, so if you don't need the extreme telephoto one of the lower range lenses might be a better choice.

The lens is best for intermediate photographers who just want a whole range of photo captures. who won't have the patience to change lens everytime. For the casual trips and occasions where you can cover everything with one lens. My experiece has been good with this one. There is another lens similar to this one. I am not sure how different they are in performance, the 18-300/3.5-5.6g is a bigger one. Some say it gives a better clarity of images. It is priced at 100$ more than this. You should check reveiws for that as well and decide.

I bought this lens because I wanted something lighter than my f2.8 glass. Check out the reviews, the lens is a bit soft at either end, but I managed to use it to do some astrophotography, and was successful! It is also my first VR lens, so that helps a bit. Mid-range focal lengths around f8 are best. If you have a camera with good low light capabilities you should be able to push this lens a little more, otherwise it really is a daylight lens. I dropped a star because the focus ring has no indicators. Not a problem during the day, but at night - you may not be able to focus. My solution was to focus on infinity during the day, then I could take some star shots.

I purchased this because I needed a quality zoom that was not too heavy. I had a 70-200 Waterproof zoom that was too heavy specifically for low light action pictures. This one has a better zoom and is much lighter in weight. It focuses easy and quickly. It is not waterproof, but I know it and will not use it in the rain. It is more expensive that a few others I tried, but it focuses better in low light action pictures, which is important to me. I would recommend this lens.

If you dont want to change lenses all day long and travel light then this is the lens for you. Do not expect pro quality photos from this f3.5 to 6.3 lens. You will however get great range and great photos all day long with a light and easy lens to use. If you want to do portrait or landscape, I suggest you purchase a specific lens in addition to this. This is much better than the kit lens that comes with the Nikon cameras. 18 to 300 is a huge range with flexibility that is unmatched. I love it.Yes I recommend it.

I was super excited about this purchase. I checked it out and thought I was good to go. I was asked to shoot a wedding and when I downloaded pics my heart dropped. 90%of my subjects have a blurry haze around them and focus was not good at all. I can't redo this moment and am having to try my best to fix each picture. And no this is not my first wedding either... i am soo upset to spend $700 on this lens. I took it back and best buy gave me no problems exchanging the lens. Went with the 18-140 and it's way better. But needless to say I would not recommend this lens

Read a lot of the reviews before I bought the lens. Was concerned about the soft focus. I have not seen that issue at all. Every picture I have taken has been sharp. This a very versatile lens. It is extremely easy to compose a picture with. I thought it might be too heavy but it is well balanced and the weight is not an issue. Only minor complete is it does not come with a lens shade and the filter size is nothing that I already had.

I am not a professional but I do appreciate good quality photos. This lens don't focus great and the colors are always weird in my opinion. I used to use the lens my camera came with and I was pretty satisfied with it until it needed a replacement. Thought this one was good because of the reviews and I decided to not give credit to the bad reviews and give it a chance. PLEASE READ THE BAD REVIEWS. I guess if you are not that picky it might be ok. But I personally like my iphone's pics better than these lens'.

The one thing that always kept me from taking photos before was NOT WANTING TO SWITCH OUT LENSES. That problem is solved with this 18 - 300 mm lens. Takes great close-ups, great mid-range, and very decent distance shots. If you are wanting super close-ups of distant birds, you need a much more powerful (and therefore expensive) telephoto. But this is a fantastic all-around take me on your trip lens.
