It's a lens that has been missing on my camera. I have been using an 18 55mm lens and it was a struggle to capture far objects

I was skeptical about buying this lens at first, but boy was a blown away by it. I am not a professional photographer but love taking shots whenever I can. I was either gonna but the 55-200mm or the 55-300mm, but I narrowed it down to the 55-200mm cause I wouldn't need that extra reach for what I was doing. Plus I didn't want that extra bulk a 300mm would have. I bought this lens about 2 weeks ago I'm glad I purchased it. This lens is compact and lightweight and takes great pictures. The auto focus on it is on par. The only bad thing is that it didn't come with a lens hood or a nikon bag to store it in but I don't use those anyways. The shots I took below are on my Newley purchased D5500. And was taken at the Desert Museum in Tucson, AZ. I can't praise this piece of glass enough. Good job nikon.

Get telescopic/zoom lens for a begginer

I just got this lens for my birthday. I have a D5500 and I got bored with my 18-55mm and wanted to shoot farther distances. For the price, this lens cannot be beat. I believe that a good picture is all about good glass, and in my opinion, Nikon has some of the best glass out there. I love the fact of how light this lens is, (easy to travel with) and the design of the telescopic zoom- how it retracts in the barrel of the lens. For a 55-200mm, the bokeh is pretty darn good. It's a super fast lens and it also shoots really really well in low light settings. I'm so happy with this lens! If you're on the fence about buying it, do so! I'm a beginner photographer and with this lens, I feel like a pro.

This is the best lens I have ever used. I just got a picture of a Red Tailed Hawk from bottom of it, obviously as it was flying above me, and you can see details of the feathers and the claws and the definitely the distinctive red tail.

This lens is great to start off your collection. It works perfect for me especially when taking action shots at sports events, or even just of my dogs out in the yard. Beautiful lens!

I purchased the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR II Telephoto Zoom Lens to pair with my Nikon D5500. I'm very pleased with the image quality and sharpness when capturing images with the zoom at 200mm. I found this lens on sale for about $150 which I thought was a good value. I have used the lens for capturing images of wildlife with very impressive results.

Great to have this lens both for distance and nice effects and clarity on close ups. Get it in a bundle though as it will be a much better price.

Buy in kit, or buy something else

I've bought both versions of this lens (with and without the lock button). I prefer the version without the lock button. It feels better and seems to have less vignetting and a sharper picture overall. Bokeh is negligible, though I wasn't looking for it specifically. Both lenses came with the kits I bought. If you're brand new to digital photography, on a tight, disciplined budget (my hat's off to your restraint-- I wish I had it!), or looking to do relatively simple things, you've got a good lens. An uncle of mine has taken excellent pictures with this lens on his D40 or D60.
If you want to photograph skylines, sweeping vistas, artwork, work well in low-light situations, capture and develop minute events, or see appreciably far away this lens is insufficient to your goals.
That said, a kit lens is a great way to "get your feet wet and learn". If you're looking at buying the lens separately, a used one in good working order might serve you better. If you know you need more, it is only $100-$200 right now to jump up to the Nikon 55-300mm version, which has better glass, greater range, and feels better in the hand without being too heavy. Don't make the jump unless you're comfortable-- $100-$200 is groceries for a month to some people, and for others it is a nice dinner for two-- do what's comfortable for your budget. Nikon has been in business for about 100 years-- something good will be there when you're ready.

I used this lens to take close ups of the Space Needle and Seattle skyline from Kerry Park. The lens is so good that even with they very basic camera settings you can see the people inside the space needle.

This lens was included in a Best Buy package deal and it is awesome. If you can find a package with this and a 18-55mm lens you'll probably be set for life (unless you are a professional sports photographer, at which case you are probably not shopping at Best Buy).

This lens allows me to take shots I simply would not be able to take with the standard 18-55 lens. Really glad I bought it at the same time I purchased my d5500. By purchasing at the same time I got a significant discount versus buying it separately.

WE purchased the lens right before going on vacation in Boston. The lens was great, especially when we were on a whale watching tour. It allowed us to take great close up pics, that we would have never gotten before purchasing this lens.

Excellent lens for beginners and takes crisp pictures every time. Love the new Nikon concept of locking the lens, it makes it more compact. In the beginning hated the feature of locking and unlocking, but now it comes second nature.
