Beautiful for portraits. A bit heavy but bright beautiful colors. I have not tried it for any close ups or any fast-action situations. I will definitely keep it, and I'm happy I purchased it.

By far the best lens I own. Bokeh is unbelievably creamy, and the image quality is sharp. Great colors. The lens is massive and very heavy, but the images you can get with it are worth the price. Definitely a niche lens, however. Too slow for anything other than planned portraits, but if you're a portrait photographer this is light years better than the 85mm.

I've waited over 30 years for Nikon to update their 105mm lenses, from the original f/2.5 to the excellent f/1,8. This new 105mm f/1.4 focuses quickly and is tack sharp, with the smoothest bokeh you will ever see....

Fantastic lens. Bokeh is amazing, but the depth of field is almost too small.

I have used this lens for a number of portraits and it never fails to let me deliver creative shots with tack sharp eyes. Glass quality is excellent, the body while plastic has a nice solid feel.

The Nikon 105mm f/1.4 is fantastic for shallow depth of field making dim light look like the middle of the day. The only difference that I see over the 85mm f/1.4 is that the backgrounds are softer with the 105. This is, by far, the absolute lens that I own. Buy it from Best Buy to take advantage of the price matching and rewards.

Poor sharpness and chromatic aberation wide open

I paid full price for this lens and am a seasoned photographer, so Nikon fanboys take note. This lens is good but not great. Wide open it has a lot of distortion and you will see a good deal of chromatic aberration in certain circumstances. Shooting into the light produces nervous or even blotchy bokeh at times. I have used this lens on a D810 as well as a D850 and the results are the same. Keep in mid the lens does NOT have VR, so you will need to keep your shutter speeds high to offset any camera shake. Again, this is a good lens and it has a good color rendition, but it needs to be stopped down to get sharp results. Perhaps my copy is defective, which is possible since Nikon does not make this lens in Japan but rather in China, which is a significant consideration considering the price of this lens. Since the Sigma 105 1.4 Art lens shoots sharper wide open and controls aberration better, I cannot recommend this lens for a professional looking for the ultimate 105mm portrait lens.
