Best lens for Aurora photography so far

I have wanted this lens for some time now and tried making due with some cheaper lens ie Tokina and Rokinon but while much cheaper in price, the coma and edge distortion bothered me to the point of buying one. I so far have zero regrets on this purchase and it is allowing me to get some very detailed aurora pictures that I have not been able to do so far with the quality of the field. Though, it makes sense after thinking about the premium telescopes(Astrophysics, Zambuto, ASA, and RCOS) I use for deep sky imaging so one can not cheap out on wide field or you will notice it and it will bother you eventually. It is a heavy lens but then again most of my telescopes are at least 30 lbs up to 210 lbs so don't cheap out on the tripod either. Mated to my Nikon D810, my wide field imaging is producing great results. I know most of the coma and distortion can be processed out but I personally like to get the best quality raw prior to any processing. Something I have done in the beginning of astroimaging. So far the lack of an easy filter system has not been a bother since I look for dark skies so I do not need to use deep sky filters and haven't did any daytime landscape images that could benefit in a polarizing filter but I believe there are a few options though a little pricey but still a workable solution.

I love this lens.. I can get super close and obtain striking photographs. I can also fit a lot in only a short distance is needed to fit everything perfectly. Although i am a beginner/novice at photography, lenses like this make me look like a professional. I am shooting on the D500 by Nikon, and I could not be happier with this camera. I am considering buying another full frame camera..FX... just for the heck of it.. I may give the D500 to my wife or daughter whichever wants it.

I waited to buy this lens because I'm not a professional photographer and am not generally into shooting landscapes or architectural photos which seemed to be the primary use among other photographers, but I'm glad I have it now. It takes very nice, sharp photos, and it does expand the range of possibilities, particularly when shooting outdoors. I recently took it with me to the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Michigan, and got a couple of nice shots.

I've been in Photography for 15 years and this lens is on my bucket list for years. I have now completed my so called trinity lens for my Nikon system. This is a superb lens for landscape and events, especially in a tight small venue! With an f/2.8 fixed aperture, you can't be wrong buying this lens! Excellent lens and this is always inside my camera bag! I included in this review my most recent picture taken with this lens!

Def worth the price. You get what you pay for. QUALITY. Use this for architectural photos, and with it's 188 degree angle of view it is PLENTY to capture entire rooms from one corner. Some slight distortion (as to be expected with super wide angle lenses), and minor vertical issues but these can easily be fixed with photo editing software. Bright colors, super crispy details, and it's sweet spot is around f8, which breaks the 3600 mark on Imatest. Lens does weigh almost 2 pounds, and if shooting into the sun you will get some minor sun and lens flares, but also to be expected with a super wide lens. Love how it has a 9 blade circular diaphragm which makes the BOKEH beauteously round and not like a polygon. Also made in JAPAN, not in China like some of the cheaper NIKKOR lens tend to be from. So happy with this lens. So happy i want to purchase another one as a backup. lol!

I have now had this lens for about a month with zero regrets. I typically shoot with a 50mm prime and an 80-400mm, i find my self leaving the 50mm in the bag and getting a little closer with this lens. Amazing for landscape photography, astrophotography, and even portraits. I have this lens paired with a D850.

I was hesitant about buying this lens when I first saw it given it's high price. I decided to rent it first to see how it performs, and I was very happy with the results. It is sharp end to end. This is very important to me because I want to maximize the usability of the frame and my camera's resolution (i.e., I don't like to waste pixels by cropping the image). This is critical for genres such as landscape and astrophotography, which I enjoy. You can tell that this is a high-quality lens just by holding it. It is heavy for its size and it operates smoothly. The zoom and focus rings are comfortable. It works perfectly on both my FX and DX bodies. The only downside is that the front element is always exposed (by design). The main issues from this perspective (based on the way I use the lens) are two: you have to be more careful with maintenance, and the options to use filters will be more expensive, compared to screw-on filters. However, these issues are not that meaningful to give this lens less than 5 stars.

This lens is considered part of Nikon's "Holy Trinity" which includes the 14-24, the 24-70 and the 70-200. I bought this lens because I really enjoy wide angle shots. As you'll find in other reviews all over the web, this lens has two limitations. The first is that it is not light and the second is that it doesn't allow for use of a standard filter for creative uses or protection. There are some filters that exist now, but they are not standard and also not cheap. Think back to what you love about photography and what types of photos you enjoy. If you're like me and you enjoy ultra wide angle shots then you won't be disappointed with this lens. It is ultra sharp and built like a tank.

I had done lots of research online before purchasing the 14-24mm. In fact I even rented it for a engagement shoot just to be sure it was all that is was cracked up to be. Let me tell you, it is! This lens is absolutely amazing. The edges are tack sharp with zero vignetting and fish eye effect. There is a reason Canon users purchase a separate mount just to use this lens. I use it a lot for my real estate shoots. You can stand in the corner of a room or in a bathroom and open it up at 14 mm, and you can see the entire space. It is pricey, but worth every penny. I bought it at $1,999.99 and Best Buy lowered it $100 to $1,899.99. Because I am an Elite Plus member I went in and Best Buy refunded me the difference. A great reason to continue to shop at Best Buy!

The images I have been getting from this lens are incredibly sharp and the slight coma in the corners of my astrophotography shots is very tolerable. It is a little heavy, but built like a tank. This will always be in my camera bag!

This is just an amazing lens. It is beautifully sharp and does everything I need it too. The ONLY downside for me about this lens is that due to how Nikon mounts the lens hood (permanent), you are forced to purchase very expensive filter systems that fit over the hood if you want to use, for example, a CPL or ND. That in no way affects image quality but it certainly limits artistic captures without further lightening the load of your wallet. But i just work with it. This is one of my favorite lenses and one I find myself using even more over this past year. Nikon glass is just incredible.

This lens is not inexpensive by any means and doesn't have image stabilization but is sharp sharp sharp. It's heavy but well made and is designed for FX full frame Nikon bodies. Works extremely well with D750 body. Would definitely recommend to a friend.

I've used this lens on several shoots since purchasing it late last October. My first shoot was of an industrial gas plant in Ohio. I was most pleased with the performance of this lens in providing good close-ups of my subject while taking in a lot of area with very little or no distortion. In my more general photographic activities, this lens has performed extremely well. It is expensive unless you plan to use it a lot. If you're going to use it, it will pay for itself quickly. Years ago when I first started out doing photography, you bought the camera with a normal (50mm) lens and a short telephoto. It did not take me long to realize I needed a good wide angle more than a telephoto. Don't get me wrong, I use telephoto lenses, too. I just find myself using the AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens more. Nikon has really produced some very good zoom lenses and the AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens is one of the best. Their unique incorporation of the lens hood into the lens and lens cap is excellent.

I use this lens for real estate photography and it is sharp. yes, there is a bit of distortion, but nothing like my SIGMA 8-16mm, and nothing a quick fix in Lightroom can't do. Overall, this lens is awesome. Just buy it, worth every penny!
