After much research I decided to buy this lens as the primary lens for my D810. I am a portrait and event photographer. My emphases is on story-telling. This lens allows me to get in close to the action. It makes photography fun. The viewer of my photograph often tell me that they feel like they wee there. Much little that the 20-35 f/2.8 I used as a Navy Photographer. I would absolutely recommend this lens.

This lens is the unsung hero of the Nikkor lineup. It is very compact and light weight, the prefect hiking lens when you want to get to that remote place and capture amazing landscape images. It is very sharp at all focal lengths, its extremely sharp especially when you stop it down a little. Corner performance is excellent, its not prone to flare and it accepts the very common 77mm filters. I wouldn't want a version of this lens that has VR as that would add weight unnecessarily. I wouldn't be using VR on a landscape lens anyway because I tend to use a tripod with a cable release in mirror-up mode to maximize sharpness. If you're in the market for a great FX ultra-wide zoom, you can't go wrong with this choice.

Super build and image quality. Sharp throughout zoom range. Real nice color and contrast. Minimal distortion. I wasn't expecting such a fine lens due to the price and was shocked by the image quality. It is on my D610 most of the time.

The lens shows barrel type distortion throughout the whole zoom range. It is very pronounced at the short end of the zoom range and decreases to a lower amount by zooming in. @ 18mm 3.7% barrel @ 21mm 2.1% @28mm 1.7% and @35mm 1.2% Vignetting is unsurprisingly most pronounced at the shortest focal length and the largest aperture. As usual, stopping down reduces the amount of light fall-off towards the corners, but it remains above half a stop at short focal lengths, even with small apertures. For most subjects, however, this should not be an issue anymore. Lateral CAs (color shadows at harsh contrast transitions) are well controlled for such a wide lens. The largest amount is visible at the shortest focal length and the largest aperture. Zooming in and stopping down reduces the amount of CAs to lower levels. In summary, the AF-S 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5 G ED shows a very solid performance (much better than its predecessor), without being really stellar though. However, since it's targeting the consumer market, this is hardly surprising, because an affordable price in this segment counts more than sheer performance. For its price, the Nikkor performs very well. If you are on the budget consider old Tamron 17-35mm f2.8-4 or prime lens Sigma 20mm f1.8

Reviewers have generally raved about this lens -- even the dyspeptic fellows at Photozone.de gave it three stars for optical quality. My experience (so far) indicates that the widespread enthusiasm is justified. This lens is mercifully light -- especially compared to Nikon's punishingly heavy and huge "professional" lenses. It feels solid and looks good. Focusing is nearly instantaneous, and barrel distortion is easily tamed by the distortion-control capabilities of the higher-level Nikon cameras, at least when shooting JPEGs. And I don't see ANY chromatic aberration at all, even in the corners, but that could be my D610 compensating for it. The best news of all is the sharpness of the Nikon 18-35mm G lens. The corners are quite decent at 18mm even below f/8, and the rest of the frame is excellent -- even wide open at f/3.5. I recently compared the 18-35G at 28mm (f/5.6) to three other lenses -- the old but respectable 28-105mm, the 24-85mm G lens, and the legendary 28mm AiS f/2.8 manual. The 18-35G was the clear winner, especially at the edges. (The 28-105 was the clear runner-up -- go figure).

The lens is great for very wide spots but do not use it for anything detail or close up. I love it for huge pictures and group shots. Ours a great lens for the price.

I own quality Nikon FX prime lenses within the 18-35 zoom range, shooting landscapes and architecture with a tripod. I purchased the 18-35 for hiking and backpacking with a lighter load, and for architectural interior work. For interiors, the 18-35 provides an infinite angle of view within its zoom range -- helpful in smaller rooms, and when working quickly. For both applications, the 18-35 produces photographs with excellent image quality. The primes offer f/1.8 speed or other features, while the 18-35 fills a versatile role in my photo kit.

Its such an amazing lens. This lens actually can brighten a dark scene while also capturing a super wide view of the scene. So glad I purchased it. Was looking for a fisheye but opted for this instead. Such a great purchase!

Was much cheaper than the 16-35mm lens and just as good. Unless you are a professional photographer, I do not see why you would need the extra 2mm at the wide end.

Need a wide angle lens for an upcoming trip and did not want to afford the top of the line versions. So far this lens is great!. Great value in a wide angle lens for price point.

I have always appreciated the quality of Nikon products and the Nikon - AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Ultra-Wide Zoom does not disappoint. Easy to use, great image quality. This was the distance range that was missing in my collection and now I can capture great architectural shots.

It's a nice lens, especially with all the features like the VR II and it's great for the price.

This is one of Nikon’s more underrated lenses. It has a very effective focal range. For nature and landscape, the aperture range is fine. I’m usually at f/8 or above anyway. The price is just right for a lens that compliments your walk around lens.

I'm happy with the lens. I know it's not built very solid but with best buy warranty, I'm pretty confident.
