Okay so I have personally worked with Nikon's : - 17-35mm Pro F2.8 - 14-24mm Pro F2.8 Started first with the 17-35mm because its a tank, pro lens, and expectations were high. Was disappointed because especially at 17mm the lens was VERY soft overall and even slighty soft in the center. Softness in center would be gone at f4 and the edges were getting much better at 5.6 and at 8 all was good. But still for $1700, really ??? So I decided to sell my 17-35 and I bought the legendary 14-24mm 1 month ago. Was a great lens OMG ! Sharpest zoom lens I have ever seen even sharper than some of my primes. Even at F2.8. Love it. But at 2 pounds 4 ounces , ugggg. Not a walk around lens so therefor I do use it primarily for interior shooting and architecture were I need a fast lens with almost no distortion. But Too bad you have to buy special third party filters for polarizr and such, which can add up the price of a cheap lens Buying the 14-24mm lens had me eating out of a can for 2 months ($1740 for refurb unit# HAHA . But I still am in love with this lens. Recently I found out that this new AF-S 18-35 mm which has a great range, good color rendering, Is in general much sharper than my 17-35mm F2.8 was, and weighs more than 3 times less than my 14-24. And only half of what my 17-35mm weighed. It takes filters, and less prone to lens flare by design. Honestly, if I had known this before I bought the 14-24 F2.8 which retails for around $2000, and also had known this AF-S 18-35 mm's great Image quality #although somewhat less than the 14-24mm) I would probably have passed on the 14-24 all together. Checking data on Nikons 16-35 F4 VR, I found that that lens is less sharp wide open and has more distortion and is also way more money than this lens. VR is great use it on my 28-300 mm but for ultrawide angles, its not really necessary. I don't miss it. All in all this may be listed as a consumer lens but I am a professional and I use it too. By the way I agree completely with the previous reviewer with everything except I would not consider Sigma 20 F1.8 this lens is reviewed with poor sharpness at 5.6 and lower. Tamron also scores less than this Nikon You know you want it, so just go buy it. You will be happy you did.
