Customers are saying

Customers love the outstanding image quality and impressive zoom capabilities of the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Super Telephoto Zoom Lens. The fast focus speed and effective Vibration Reduction are also frequently praised, along with the lens's reach and value for its price. However, some find the lens to be large and heavy.

    Good enough for casual shooters

Nice focal length range for the price. As a sports shooter the f5.6 aperture isn't the best, but the worst element is the inability to rack out or rack in the lens without having to twist, regrip, twist again--whereas with the 200-400mm can reach the entirety of its range with a slight twist in the necessary direction.

This is actually my second one of these lenses. The first was returned defective and I am experiencing issues with little improvement with operating this lens on my Nikon D7500 and will be returning it again. It is either defective or incompatible.

It takes great photos but it is heavy, hard to handle hand held. A tri or mono pod is required. It easily weighs a good 5 pounds. It is also a good 12" long. I did shoot some good picks of the moon and a few birds, like I said pretty sharp.

BB shipped this in a large box with zero packing, it was sliding around inside box. I was very dissappointed but decided to test the lens just to be sure. The test showed the lens to be de-centered badly. Probably due to how it was packed for shipment. Probably should purchase from a reputable camera store.

I have used this lens extensively on my D610 and D500 for birds and other wildlife. Results are spectacular. The VR works amazingly well. I only need a monopod when using it on the D500 with an effective angle of view of a 750mm lens. On D610, I routinely hand hold. Sharpness and contrast are superb. F5.6 is good for even twilight shots with high ISO capabilities of my 2 Nikon bodies. Only "average" thing about the lens is focusing. It is not blazing fast, but I find it OK for flying birds unless very close. (Explosive warblers will still need a 300F2.8!) Having a range of 200-500mm has been more handy than I thought it would be for those times (especially with the D500) when 500mm is too much. No need to change lenses.

OK so i shoot birds, well i try LoL.. This lens gives me the reach that i need. I shoot this on aD7200 and was surprised at the quality of the pictures.. The lens seems to be sharper at the 200 and 300MM range above that it seems to loose some of it sharpness. Now this can be because of the weight of it and me holding the lens.. Pros? Price Focal Range Quality Cons? Weight

Excellent Telephoto Lens for the Hobbyist

I've been drooling over the 800 mm lens by Nikon (over $16,000) for awhile now. I love to shoot wildlife, but could never get close enough for the detail I wanted. Purchased this lens about a week ago and I love it. Still learning the finer points of its use with the different camera settings, but even that has been enjoyable. I plan to obtain the 2x teleconverter to up the reach, knowing I will lose AF ability, but I don't use AF all that much these days. I use a D7100 and I have had no disappointment in the shots. BUY IT.

I know that some professionals like fixed focal length lens' but the zoom is much more flexible. I am getting some great shots with this lens that aren't otherwise possible. It is pretty massive and doesn't fit in my camera bag, but it comes with a nice cloth bag. I have had it for several months and am very happy with it so far.

I purchased this lens a few years ago, when I was still a Nikon DSLR user. This lens is so good that I could not bear to part with it, even now that I have switched to the Z series cameras and purchased the Nikon 180-600mm. If you are a Nikon D series user than this lens is truly your best option without spending much more for the fixed focal lenses. If you are a Nikon Z series user on a budget, and you cannot afford or justify the expense of the Nikon 180-600mm, and have a FTZ adapter, then this is a great budget option for you. I have tested it out on a couple of Z series cameras and the auto focus works great, especially if you are using with a newer body like the Z50ii.

Great Image quality , well worth the money, rivals much more expensive lenses. Auto focus is a tad slow for some moving objects. But overall you will spend a lot more to get even close to this good of a lens .I would recommend this lens to anyone looking for a long lens. It is a bit heavy, but can be hand held.

Tried the Sigma and Tamron 150-600mm and just had to go with this one. The last 100mm on the 3rd parties just didnt do it for me. This is super sharp at 500 and plenty long on an aps-c. 5 stars

I bought this lens for a wildlife photography trip. I'm a beginner-intermediate photographer and although I'm sure the lens is powerful enough for experts, it was also easy to use for a hobbyist. The only downside is weight - it is pretty heavy for its size. I used a tripod with no problems. Very happy with my purchase.
