I'm skipping the usual scientific gobbeley gook bla, bla, bla about this lens. For specs you can use google to get the details. This is a review from actually using this lens in two situations; night high school football and at a homecoming shoot.
For sports, this lens can be hand held...but don't. It's heavy and awkward with the focus ring being always nearby your hand. It can be done, I have the pics to prove it...but after 1500 shots, you'll need a spa and massage. Put this on a mono-pod.
You have to be back a bit from the action especially if the players are running at you. You will not be getting many usable images because the play action just gets bigger and bigger and bigger ....not only that, but getting run over by a 250 pound guy would not be fun! Seriously, though, it's great from about 30 yards away and more from the action. The focus speed is very, very fast...probably the fastest I've ever worked with. You will have to shoot wide open and at high ISOs when at night games as municipalities don't spend any money on decent lighting. (I usually use auto ISO and let the camera decide. I find quite usable images up to around 8000 with the D5 and try to keep the shutter speed at or above 640) If you're going to put this on a mono pod, go out and immediately buy a RRS LCF-15 foot and save the old one to put in the box when you sell this.....er, I don't think this lens will ever be sold from me. The Nikon foot is not useful and a waste of metal...(NIKON what are you thinking?).
For portraits, there is not much to say but HOLY COW!, this is the best portrait lens I've ever used, and yes with over 150,000 images from the legend portrait lenses, i can stand by that statement! The compression and bokeh is absolutely wonderful to behold! There is a slight drawback, you gotta invest in walkie talkies to communicate with the model! (Just kidding of course but because it is 200mm, you're gong to be back 35-40 feet for a full length shot.)
This images this beast renders is absolutely top notch especially telling is if you using the D800, D850.
If your dreaming about buying this lens, save your money, eat noodle soup and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches until you can afford it. It's that good and you will not regret it one iota!
