Customers are enthusiastic about the AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens's image quality and versatility, frequently praising its sharpness and ability to capture a wide range of shots. The lens's extensive focal length, covering wide-angle to telephoto, is also a significant plus, allowing for diverse photographic opportunities. However, some users find the lens somewhat heavy, and others have noted that the autofocus could be improved for speed and accuracy.

Very happy with performance of this lens. Great color and sharpness throughout the zoom range. So far have done some landscapes and portraits and all have turned out great. Compliments the D810 very well.

I am not a pro but taking pictures with this lens makes you feel like one! Very nice pictures. It is heavy for some people but it’s ok for me. Because of the overall weight of this lens plus the camera please be mindful to keep steady when taking certain pictures because they could be blurry. But with proper settings and focus this is one lens that will serve you well for years. Great investment.

The Only Zoom Lens You Need

If you have a Nikon FX camera, this is the only zoom lens you will ever need - unless you are willing to spend thousands of dollars to get to f/2.8. In my opinion, if you have a fairly recent version FX camera (such as a D750) with much improved low light capability, there is absolutely no need to spend the extra to get the f/2.8 zoom lenses - especially for non-pro's.
This 28-300 mm zoom lens has excellent qualities in terms of sharpness, color rendition and auto focus speed. Distortion can be obvious when you get close to the two ends of the zoom range, but it is easily corrected in post. It felt a bit heavy at the beginning for me, but I got used to it quickly. Highly recommended.

this is an incredible lens. You do not have to carry any other lens with you. this covers the entire area you need. wide angle, telephoto, 50 for portraits. you can use it in many different shooting situations. Just add a converter on this lens and you will be amazed.

I bought this lens so I could carry just one lens while out running around. So far I am very pleased. It does have a bit of weight to it and used on my D750 It it a tad bulky for my 5’2 frame but not a major issue for me at all. I don’t have to swap lenses while out on a day trip and takes nice sharp picture up close or at a distance.

First Nikon lense

My thoughts are this is a great starter lense to get into full frame images without breaking the bank. I use it for both astrophotography and landscapes with very good results. I will ultimately buy the Nikkor premiums, first one will be the Nikkor 14-24mm. But, to cover the range this lense covers, I would of spent close to 5k more on the lenses. But, nevertheless, I will still carry this lense with me even after I purchase the 14-24. Its a little slow for low light or high speed shots but for the most part I haven't had too many bad images caused by the higher f ratio. I can just increase the exposure some. Low brightness auroral activity is one example when having faster lenses comes into play.

Good FX lens (D750)

Picked this lens up when I also bought the D750. Had a 18-200 DX on the D300 and it worked well.. This one seems to be the bigger brother to the 18-200 (72mm) while this lens is 77mm. I do like the lens lock switch on the lens to keep the lens from "creeping out" when the lens is held vertically down (like when you carry it). VR works well also.
Would suggest getting a 77mm UV filter (just for lens surface protection) at the same time if you do get this lens.

Big Full-Range Nikon Zoom

I bought a D610 at Best Buy, knowing I would use it with my legacy manual focus lenses from bygone days when I was a pro. Then I got the idea that I wasn't using the camera to its full potential, so I got the 28-300 ED VR lens.
This lens is great in that it covers the full range of focal lengths, has Vibration Reduction, and its quick Auto Focus capability makes using Live View a snap. Plus it allows Program and Shutter Priority modes, which are unavailable to MF lenses.
But the lens is big and has a large petal shade, which is disproportionate to the D610 sans the battery grip. And I felt that for a lens costing over a grand, the optics should have been slightly crisper, especially at the 28mm end.
So thank goodness to Best Buy's generous return policy, I went back to my familiar, old legacy lenses.

I have this for my D800. This is a fantastic super-zoom lens for an FX DSLR. The image quality isn't at the same level as narrower zoom lenses (75-300mm) or primes, but that's just being picky. For most people, your sill will limit you more than this lens. Great for traveling and a walk-around lens. Grab a 14-24mm and you're done! Also, go to DxOMark for a comprehensive review of this lens. And don't forget, if attached to a DX, then expect 1.5x crop factor and range (42-450 mm equivalent).

Sharp Images and a Very Usable Range

This lens is used with a new Nikon D750 body and replaces a DX 18-200 lens I used with a retired D7000. I have found it produces very sharp images with no serious distortion. I compared it with a recently purchased FX16-35 Nikkor lens. This lens is as sharp as the wide angle and has less distortion. I have done nice architectural work with it for exteriors and need to see how it does on interiors where the 16-35 will probably do better. The lens is also very nice on group photos and has a wide enough DOF that everyone is in focus. It is heavier than it's DX equivalent but its manageable and it has the lock but doesn't have barrel creep so far. Slightly stiff zoom ring has a sure feel. I am very Happy with this lens and will probably have in mounted on my D750 90%+ of the time.

Great Travel Lens

This lens would be a great travel lens as it gives you wide angle to telephoto in just one lens. It is a bit heavy but the benefits outweigh the extra ounces to carry this lens.
Plus, it has image stabilization to help you get crisper images.
My only complaint is it doesnt go down to f/2.8 so for low light you might want to get something better.

I rely on this and the Z 35 1.8 S for my Nikon Z6. I also have the DX equivalents for my D7500. Those two lenses are all you need to capture most images. Lens construction has reached a point where there are really no bad lenses. It comes down to convenience and personal preference. I find myself continuing to value convenience and versatility over some abstract, and usually invisible, standard, or test result from a laboratory.

Great camera for large distant objects

I absolutely love this camera. It's perfect. I took it on a recent trip to Africa and used it on endless safaris and animal conservation projects. Two things to keep in mind though: it is a ZOOM lens, so anything up close will appear blurry and out of focus. The nature photography setting on the camera base helps with this, but you want to be at least 1.5- 2 feet away from any small objects you want to take a picture of. Also, distant items, if they're smaller, may not focus properly. The lens constantly focused on the trees, when I wanted an image of an antelope. However, using the manual focus fixed the majority of this problem---just to keep in mind for beginners. Overall though, I am very pleased with this purchase.
