Many appreciate the lens's ability to produce sharp, clear images, even at the edges of the frame. However, some find the lens to be large and heavy. Great Lens for what it was made to do
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Love this lens. Much faster than the D lens. This G lens seems to be a little sharper and definitely faster in focusing. Great for either tripod or hand held. Used it at an airshow hand held and worked great. Just a bit heavy, but easy to handle. The pictures shown was from an airshow and taken with an 80-400mm Nikon G lens.

Perfect for me
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This lens is more expensive than the 200-500 MM lens so why did I purchase it, especially when many on -line reviews rate them equal in image sharpness? Less weight and ease of handling was a big factor since my preference is hiking and hand holding for photographing wildlife. Secondly, the wider range of the zoom gives flexibility and minimizes lens changes while in the field. Lastly, I like it that this lens was made in Japan.

In Love With Lens
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This lens has exceeded my expectations. My plans were to buy another lens that takes macro pictures besides this one. However, as I'm learning to use this lens, I am finding that I can take excellent macro pics with this. The VR works great. It's very easy to use. I can take pictures of the moon handheld at 400mm. Pictures are very crisp. Great resolution. Very fast focusing, so great for taking action shots. The only real cons are that it's a heavy lens and it's an expensive lens.

Great lens
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have only used this lens for 11 days and have been impressed with the clarity I'm getting from pic's when hand held. I used this with a D7100 set ISO 1000 at the San Diego Zoo on Sat. and was amazed with the pictures. I'm pretty steady but will generally have a few pic's that are out of focus from movement. Out of over 400 pic's I had 1 out of focus pic. I'm looking forward to see how this lens does with birds in flight :-)

awesome results
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.super results, my first semi expense dive in. At first it seemed a little large and heavy, you will need a big/ sturdy tripod and head for it, which is not always practical. However, I used it on a pontoon boat on the slough... hand held and it was amazingly easy. photos were good. Realizing that this is the lower price bracket for the 300 to 500 that everyone else was shooting with, I was amazed with the ease of use and results. great stepping stone !!!!!!! and maybe the forever choice.

Great range but bigger & heavier than expected
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A brilliant lens with a great range, even more so on DX. It's bigger than I expected but not surprising given the quality it is, significantly larger than my Nikon 70-300 VR lens. The VR II on the 80-400 is a step above anything I've tried, no problems shooting handheld at 400mm FL. I picked this up at Union Square in NYC for 45% off the MSRP so was a no-brainer, not so sure I'd buy again at full price though...

Nikkor 80-400mm zoom
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.this is an excellent lens that compliments my original 18-55mm lens. It is relatively easy to handle for weight and ease of adjustment without a tri pod. it takes excellent pictures and is fast enough to stop action photographing planes landing or other action sports events.

Beauty and the Beast
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The lens is a beast but I love it. It's big, a little unwieldy if you have small hands or not a lot of strength but if you can learn to manage it, it's great. I'm petite at five feet and 90 pounds, but I can handhold this lens and shoot fine, just takes some practice. Yes it does chatter when shooting full out but it's not a nuisance, unless you need it perfectly quiet. Doesn't weigh much more than a 70-200 but is fatter. Aperture range is fine for daytime.

Loving It
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It works great for macro. Love the new lens. Only thing is the price is really expensive, far more than the Nikon 7100 that I use it with. Crisp pictures. Fast focusing, so good for motion pictures. It is a big lens, and a bit heavy, but that's alright. Easy to use, if you know what you're doing.

Safari Companion
||Posted . Owned for 8 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this zoom lens specifically for my East Africa safari trip. Performed very well. Luckily- we were mostly in the jeep as this thing is extremely heavy and large. Had to sacrifice a couple items in my carry-on in order to make the required weight. Picture quality - amazing. Make sure to practice before you take this on vacation. Able to capture so really great wildlife action shots from a moving jeep. Pricey - but performed exactly as expected. Highly recommend.

Great moderate to long lens
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. With a 5x zoom and generally sharp overall this lens is an improvement over the previous model. Works with all digital cameras and the newest model film cameras 35mm.

great lens
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I sold my Sigma 150-500 to get this lens. This lens is terrific in so many ways. It's relatively compact compared to other lenses in this category and fits a mid size camera bag. The Sigma didn't. I had to carry it in it's own bag. The weight is managable and I've made very sharp handheld shots. Something I couldn't do with the Sigma. The filter thread is 77mm, the standard size on majority of FX lenses. All my major Nikon lenses are 77mm so I didn't need to buy additional filter sets (ND, polarizer). the Sigma was 86mm. The only thing I didn't like is the small lens collar so I bought Kirk's larger collar. Now the more important stuff; auto focus is swift and the picture quality is flawless. This lens met my expectations in every way. Other than the minor collar issue, two thumbs up to Nikon for this great lens.

Nikon's Best Quality Zoom Available
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The reviews on this lens are the best. The internal motor is quiet and fast focusing. The stabilization is second to none. The sharpest zoom available. Edge to edge sharpness is incredible. This lens separates the amateur and the professional. Worth every dollar.

New Favorite Lens
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had been waiting to add this lens to my toolkit and it has quickly become my favorite. Ease of use, lightweight and best of all I can get closeups and still have a good zoom range. Looking forward to trying it with the hummingbirds this season.

Great lens for sports and wildlife photography

Great reach, fast autofocus, poor collar
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This lens give me what I need to photograph sports in good light. The fast autofocus keeps me shooting sharp images consistently. Color rendition is good as is contrast. Unfortunately, like any other lens of f/4.5 to f/5.6, it leaves a lot to be desired for autofocus, sharpness, and clarity even on my D750. Another downside is that for $2300 you might think that Nikon would at least put a good mounting collar on it. The mounting collar is small and even small fingers will have trouble getting in between the collar and the barrel for handling.

Great lens for photographing wildlife
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. With the short time I have had the lens I have enjoyed capturing wildlife with full frame pictures. I can use a monopod or tripod to support the lens/camera and get clear sharp photos of wildlife and nature that are great distances away.
