The Lens is great for Wild Life photography where the subject is at a distance and we need to capture the finer details. With a teleconvertor it becomes a awesome tool. I used in a Sanctuary near Denver and my critiques were truly impressed !

After a trip to Alaska I realized I was in need of a more powerful telephoto lens. With a 80 to 400 range, this has lens has met and exceeded my expectations.

I bought the original version of this lens that came out many years ago and didn't like it much. The VR didn't work very well--in fact, it often created ghost images in my pictures when I used a slow shutter speed. Also, the focusing mechanism was old technology so it was slow and noisy.
This new version of the lens fixes those problems. The Silent Wave Motor focusing is fast, quiet and precise. Also, the VR works much better, and I've gotten good shots at 400mm with a shutter speed of 1/125. Of course, you'll want to take a lot of shots to ensure you get a good one (but with digital, that's just fine).
The lens is heavy--make no mistake--3 lbs 8 oz. If you're going to be carrying it for any distance you'll want one of those padded camera straps. Even with one of those, I often end up carrying the camera/lens combination in the crook of my arm rather than let it hang from my neck.
I did not give any rating on durability because I haven't had the lens long enough to make an informed judgement.

After many months of deciding on whether to buy this lens, or just continue to use my Nikon 70-300 VR lens, I finally broke down and purchased it!. WOW does not describe the capabilities of this super lens. Amazingly fast auto focus, great VR (vibration Reduction) even when shooting at low speeds. Clarity of the digital shots is amazing. This is a world class lens. My 70-300MM is going to be handed down to my daughter. If you are serious about wildlife photography, birding, the everglades, and that trip to Africa don't wait. Currently Nikon is offering a $400.00 rebate on this lens. Now is the time to nail this one. This lens is worth ever dollar spent.
