In short you cannot get a Nikkor zoom lens this sharp for less money and you might pay more for a lens not as sharp as this is. Build is excellent the optics superb. But at least on a D300 it is sometimes slow to focus especially in low light. Without VR you need to be careful about stabilizing the lens camera combo but when you do the results can be stunning. I have taken to using a monopod for long focal length shots. With a tripod detail is incredible. Getting used to where the zoom ring is located takes some time especially for rapid adjustment but it is a learned skill. There is no lens hood with the lens but for under $10 after markets are available all over the web. This is a heavy and big lens but not as large as the new 70-200 Nikkor lens. But with a serious zoom you expect size to be hefty. No complaints. For what I saved with this lens vice the new 70-200 I can by a 105 macro. If you like macro you'll not use the 80-200 for it because the close focus is too far away. Last note this is either a DX or FX lens.

This is a great lens for Nikon full frame cameras. I use it mostly for indoor sporting events. It captures great action shots in low light environments. It is heavy but has great range.

Absolutely love it. Now I have to sell my other lower end lenses to make room for more of the higher end ones.

I purchased this lens a few months ago for my D7000. It is everything that I had hoped for and more. The lens is crisp at any aperature and focal length. The focus speed on the D7000 is fast and tracks well on moving objects. I seriously considered the 70-200 II with vibration reduction but the cost is over double the price of this lens. For me, my main objective is to use this lens for wildlife, sports and car racing. For moving objects the VR is not going to do much for you so I decided to purchase this model and save myself over a thousand dollars. Basically for the price difference between this and the VR model paid for my camera body. It is a very large and heavy lens. IT WILL NOT AUTOFOCUS ON CAMERA'S WITHOUT A BUILT IN MOTOR. My wife's camera is a D5000 and this lens will not autofocus using that body. This lens is built the way they should be, sturdy and will last for many years if you take care of it. This has been in the Nikon catalog for many years and I am actually surprised that they still offer it. You usually cannot find a pro caliber lens in this price range. The only thing that sucks is they supply a fancy leather case that I will probably never use but not a lens hood. Come on Nikon, for $10 you can buy an aftermarket one. For a pro caliber lens with 77mm filters you could toss a hood in the box.

Top shelf lens for a fantastic price...

This is a late review of this lens because I purchased it about two years ago, but I never wrote a review until I could take this lens through its paces with every kind of photo shoot: weddings, football games, parties, portraits, nightclubs, concerts, parades, etc. I used this lens on a D80, D7000, and now a D610. This lens has never disappointed me on image quality. Images are sharp at all focal lengths. The bokeh is very nice, especially at 200mm. For money making shoots, I use a monopod for extra stability as this lens does not have VR. I can say with all honesty that I have never lost a shot for lack of VR on this lens. On DX frames it performs great, clear sharp images. When I put it on my D610, I was blown away! My pics took on a whole other look. I never believed there was a difference between DX and FX until I used this lens on my D610. This lens is meant for FX bodies, but I suspect it would be spectacular on a D7100. A couple of issues come up on this lens however. There is some distortion at the long and short ends and plenty of purple fringing on the highlights. Distortion can be handled quite easily today. If your camera doesn't correct for it right away, it can easily be corrected using decent photo software. Fringing needs good photo software, but it is not a big deal to correct either. Neither one of these issues has bothered me at all and it should not bother you either so long as you have methods to compensate for them. Overall, I would say this is my best lens by far. It is top shelf. It is well built and performs beautifully. Would I rather have the 70-200mm VR? Of course. We all would. But, I don't see the need for it nor am I saving for it. This lens is perfect for performance and price. Two things: One, don't put a filter in front of it, especially if you have a high megapixel camera like the 7100 or the 610. The image will be soft and defeat the purpose of the high megapixels. Two, get a good lens hood because one is not included with the purchase. Use the filter for storage and to keep dust out. If you want the best image quality, don't use $100 worth of cheap glass in front of $1100 worth of fine glass.

I am a sports photojournalist and I purchased this lens 1 month ago and am quite impressed! I am covering high school basketball and even with low gymnasium lighting, this lens is very impressive! I can't imagine what my upcoming tennis and baseball pics will look like. It's a little on the heavy side, but well worth it!
