    Phenomenal Photos; won't disappoint!

    Posted .

I purchased this camera right before a trip upon the recommendation of the sales associate and before I did any research. I had previously owned an ultrazoom camera from another leading company that stopped making the picture cards for my model, so I decided to give this Nikon model a try as I wasn't ready to shell out over a grand for an SLR. I am not disappointed. So...how good is it? It's amazing. The clarity is stunning and the images as you can see pictured here are vibrant and rich. I have a small tripod that I use for obsure lighting, but the pictures taken here were without the tripod. I chose to display 2 types of shots not easily taken with many cameras to show the capabilities of this one. The videos captured have excellent sound and the quality is good. It's not a video camera, so you will have a bit of grain to anything filmed in dark lighting, but it works. I filmed a flamenco perfomance in a bar in Sevilla and it came out great. I was able to zoom in while filming (which some comments have said it's not possible). I used the "sports" mode to shoot both the dancer mentioned above and a friend playing golf and the shots came out great. The telephoto feature is amazing, but you will need either a mini-tripod or to steady your arm on something when using the digital zoom to reduce the noise interference. I took shots from castle rooftops that were a good 5 miles away yet look like I'm right there. I highly recommend taking the time to read the manual to understand all of its features. I also suggest buying an SD picture disk to be able to take the most pictures at the higest quality. With several videos, over 1200 shots I still have memory left over on my disk (I shot only between 3 and 5 mega pixels as above that is too much for most shots). Whether you're a novice or advanced user, this camer is an excellent bridge between your regular point and shoot and high end SLR cameras.

Finally found what I was looking for!

    Posted .

This is not a point and shoot, nor was it intended to be. This is for the people who know how to use a camera, want exceptional image quality (from a properly exposed shot), but don't want to lug around a dSLR everywhere they go. The reviewers who cried foul and returned their P80 after a few days should not be listened to because they never got a feel for the camera before making their judgement. I've had mine for a little over a month now, and have over 2000 images with it...I couldn't be happier. This was the camera i've been looking for. I was a photo major in college, and shot manual 35mm cameras most of my life, so I know how to set up for a shot. I didn't like my point and shoot because it took a great scene, and turned it into a mediocre shot. The P80 delivers if you take the time to get to know it. I researched ultrazooms for weeks before making a purchase, and spent days at Best Buy playing with all the models in the UZ category. In the end, the Panasonic FZ18 and Nikon P80 were the only two contenders. I leaned towards the FZ breifly because of its HD video capability...but after seeing how MUCH HD video I could fit onto a memory card...and my long love for Nikon cameras, I chose the P-80. If your idea of photography is turning on the camera and pushing the button, this is not the camera for you. Its "Auto" mode is strangely ineffective..bordering on horrible. It's not great in low light, but none of the UZ's are...this is what you get when you ask that much out of a lens...it's a simple fact of light. If you understand shutter speeds and aperatures, and enjoy setting the camera up to get the shot YOU want, you will be more than pleased with what this camera delivers. The flash is insane too, so when shooting in low light, use it. Overall, the image quality is great for what the camera offers you in focal length....try finding a good quality lens for your dSLR with that range and you'll have the same problems. Listen to the reviews of people who kept the camera and learned how to use it....none of them will have a bad word to say. It's not a point and shoot....but if you're a photographer....a real one....in your hands this is probably the most capable non-dSLR available today.

    first digital camera

    Posted .

As the title suggest this is my first digital camera. I wanted a camera that could do what a D-SLR could but with less weight and no lenses to lug around and with point and shoot ease. This camera is very, very user friendly and the controls are very comfortable and intuitive. I have never used a camera except a point and shoot film camera at a birthday etc. and I figured out most of the menu at the store in very short order. The quick start-up has allowed me to get some spur of the moment shots. The zoom comes in very handy and produces good shots. The scene modes seem to work well even though I have not been able to try them all. I am still trying to figure and remember a lot in the manual. I recommend reading the manual to understand the features. It seems to take a second once you take a picture to be ready for the next shot unless you are in sport mode or shooting in continuous setting. The screen does not wash out even in direct sunlight. The pictures on this site were on the auto macro setting. They are not the pictures I wanted to send but for some reason even thought the site says 2mb will down load I could not get that to happen? I have been pleased with the color replication. The other picture not shown showed very good purple and yellow and deep red and green which was very accurate. Also, indoor shots without the flash seem to do very well even in less than bright conditions. I was very skeptical of this camera because a couple of review web sites do not rate Nikon point and shoot as well as Canon for color and sharpness and while the official reviews are not in I am sure that with all the features this camera has and the evident quality of pictures that it will be a winner for us.

    I'm a NIKON believer now!

    Posted .

We bought this camera yesterday after doing a lot of research. We have not been disappointed. We had an old Fuji before that was horrible with the shutter speed..I'll never buy anything but a Nikon from this point on...it is WONDERFUL! I have horses as well as 2 small children, shutter speed and zoom are crucial. I spent 2 hours taking pics today and they came out absolutely beautiful. I still have power on my battery and I know I've run the camera for a good 3 hours by now. We're still on the battery life from taking it straight out of the box, haven't charged it yet. Best of all, no more eating up AA batteries! I highly recommend this camera if you're looking for a fast shutter speed and an excellent zoom. The picture I attached is taken from across my pasture..I never would have caught such a beautiful image of my horse if I'd walked up closer, she'd have seen me and been distracted. I look forward to catching lots of amazing shots with this thing! NIKON ROCKS!

    outstanding!

I have had this camera for a couple of months now and I really am pleased with it. I have been too busy using it to read much of the manual so I am sure there are a lot of features that I haven't discovered yet, but I have gotten great results so far. It performs like a champ indoors with available light as well as the built in flash. The 18X optical zoom is fantastic, the digital range on the zoom is serviceable but shaky without a tripod (just like any other camera). The screen is big and bright but a little hard to use in the sunshine, so it's nice to have the option of a viewfinder. I'm still not used to using a screen anyway, I'm kinda old school and it feels odd to hold the camera away from my face. Anyway, what else...I shot some video hiking at Clifton Gorge in SW Ohio and it came out nicely but the audio was a little distant. Rechargeable battery life is very good. The lens cap is strange but works OK, and I really wish the lens was threaded so I could use a protective filter. The slight shutter lag is a sort of a pain, but a common symptom of the digital age. All in all, it's a superb camera and worth the price.

    Amazing digital camera

    Posted .

I have really enjoyed this camera since purchasing it in May! This camera, by far, is the best light weight, easy to use camera out there with all of its features. This camera has taken fantastic pictures in the mountains, at baseball games, at gymnastic meets and the 4th of July fireworks! The zoom is one of the best features on this camera and easy to use. The battery can be changed quickly and it and the SD card are easy to take out and put in. The settings are simple and can be changed in moments. A feature I liked when I was learning to use this camera was the ability to add a voice recording to the picture so I knew what settings I had used to take a picture. I recommend using a small tripod when using the digital zoom, especially closeups from far away. No matter how steady I think my hands are, even with the optical stabilization, to get a clear, crisp picture I need to use a tripod. Great camera, great pictures!

    Great Advanced Point and Shoot

    Posted .

Fantastic camera! Fun and intuitive the way Nikon F-Series cameras have always worked for the pros - I was one! Gives back manual control so that the real creative possibilities can be had with a Point and Shoot. If you were ever a fan of the Nikon F-Series cameras and don't want to lug around several lenses, etc. this camera goes from 28mm to 486mm so the wide angle and telephoto are built in. Picture quality is very good with plenty of in-cam options to get the best results. The lens barrel is threaded so it may take attachments but Nikon has none available for it. Some people want an external flash, I don't - the built-in Speedlight is excellent, ample, and sufficient. Overall, great camera if you know how to use one and keep your expectations realistic -- this product won't chop or dice but it will open up new creative avenues.

    Fantastic Camera

I got this camera for my birthday about a month ago, and it has been great. I really like the awesome zoom. I went to a monster truck rally this past weekend, and this camera performed really well. When the lights were low it didn't do the greatest, but when the lights were turned up, it was amazing! I got some amazing action shots!! Video quality is good for a point&shoot camera. If you are going to use your camera for a lot of sporting events or concerts, this is the camera for you.

    This camera is great!!!

This camera is great! I’ve only had it for three weeks and all ready I’ve taken hundreds of pictures with it. It takes great pictures of close ups like flowers and the zoom is fantastic. I would consider myself a novice with a camera (I’m 14) but once I read the instruction manual and gave myself time to play with the features and understand it more I have been able to take great pictures. This camera isn’t a point and shot and to get a good shot you must take your time, however if you do the quality pictures you get is wonderful. I would absolutely recommend this camera to anyone. It’s great for the price, easy to work with, and it’s very much like to professional cameras I’ve used. It’s a great camera.

    Best Purchase Ever

    Posted .

I was wanting to buy an advanced Point & Shoot for awhile, and when I saw that Nikon was making one, I snatched one up. And Best Buy was the first store in my area to have it. The zoom on the Coolpix P80 is amazing and the VR (Vibration Reduction) is extremely handy. I used to have ruined photos all the time with my older, smaller p&s. And it takes very good macro (close-up) shots.

    Great Camera

Just picked this camera up the other day from my local best buy for 399.99, and haven't been able to put it down since. The pictures turn out amazing and it's so easy to use. I am very apt with computers and technology, but my mother can even use it- and that means it's simple and easy to use. I would recommend this for anyone looking for a good camera with a great optical zoom. Not for the average picture taker because of its size and specs (unnecessary for just regular pictures), but for some one looking to take lots of pictures of high quality; get this camera.

This camera takes some time to get used to, but who doesn't want to play with their camera for hours on end when they first buy it anyway? So glance over the instructions to see everything it has to offer then play with it. I like that you can keep the settings you last used just by the on/off button; you don't have to move the setting dial. I've been an avid Kodak user since I was a kid but this camera is perfect for me and my 4 month old. We found a tree frog when I was trimming the hedges and the picture is crisp and clear.

    Nikon does it again!

Takes wonderful pictures. Zoom is great, I have not had to use the digital zoom yet. Pictures in low light are better than any I have seen before. Fun features include a time lapse - you can record a flower opening or clouds moving across the sky. It has a panoramic setting that helps you take pictures that can be stiched together with included software. I hope this lasts as long as my last Nikon, I can't wait to see what these can do 6 years from now!

    Great So Far

    Posted .

I just bought this camera 2 days ago and used it for the first time last night. I took a picture (using a tripod) of the rare alignment of the first quarter moon with Venus and Jupiter. It's not a bad shot using the night scene with the auto. I'm sure once I learn the manual mode and more of the many features of the camera, I will be even more pleased. This camera is lightweight and easy to use. Pick up a tripod when you buy it.

    Nikon P-80

    Posted .

The camera is great for it's price range, it is an in between pro-amt. kind of camera. It takes great images, the zoom is fantastic, the shutterspeed is kind of slow when you take a sot you must wait for a moment, not a bad thing as long as your doing scenics, but not for shooting action shots...The one thing that I am not fond of is the inability to apply external filters, such as polarizer, N.D. and spec. effects so on and so on.. Price was great, I bought the 4gb. mem. card which I highly recomend, additional batteries are not readily available, which is another concern. Overall a good amatuer camera with a few frills, such as shutter speed, aperture, controls which allow you to control long exposures for night shots...

Alot of camera for the money

    Posted .

I brought this camera to capture pictures at the Balloon Festa in New Mexico. The first day we went to the Dawn Patrol at 5:30 in the morning and I was able to get some great photos of the balloons being setup with no tripod before dawn. Camera right out of the box was easy to setup and get shotting but to access some of the more advance modes were not as easy to find on the camera.

It has a liitle less zoom than the canon powershot, but makes up for it with more megapixels. Great camera though.
