I purchased this camera for my wife and she greatly enjoys it. I personally have a Nikon D3300 DSLR but she wanted something a bit more basic where she wouldn't have to worry about swapping out lenses. She also wanted something that was small and light while also offering a high optical zoom. After conducting research and using cameras in the store, we both decided on this camera. I'll go over the positives first. The 16MP sensor produces great shots during the day and takes decent night photos. It's definitely not on par with my DSLR but I wasn't expecting it to as this camera is less than half of what I paid for said DSLR. You'll want to at least have a monopod (I recommend a traveling, gripping tripod) if you want to take better night shots. The lens offers an exceptional amount of optical zoom topping out at 40X. There's also optical image stabilization (Nikon calls their version "lens-shift vibration reduction") and that helps take clear shots up to the full 40X optical zoom. The camera does go up to 80X zoom but that's using both optical and digital zoom. You'll get better results by limiting the zoom to 40X and then using photo editing software to crop your pictures. The LCD is easy to view outdoors in bright conditions and rotates so that you can take shots down lower to the ground or while holding your camera up high. It doesn't rotate enough to take "selfies" but that's alright. Videos recorded with this camera are top notch, you can record at full 1080p and 30fps or at 1080i and 60fps. I set her camera up to shoot at 1080i, 60fps and then de-interlace the video in my (very) basic video editing software (iMovie) resulting in a 1080p, 60fps video. 60fps looks smoother than 30fps and you can even slow it down to 30fps without any skips in the framerate resulting in 1/2 slow motion. You'll need either an SD, SDHC, or SDXC card with this camera as it only has enough built-in storage for ~7 pictures but the cards are really inexpensive. We ended up buying a 64GB SDXC card for $20 from Best Buy the day we picked up the camera. Nikon has an app that you can download to your phone which will let you control the camera. It works and the live view (seeing what the camera lens does) on my wife's phone is pretty quick, it's actually a lot better than with my Nikon D3300. You can take pictures, change a few settings, and change the focus region all through the app. It works via Bluetooth or Wi-fi. Just keep in mind that it will drain both the camera's and your phone's/tablet's battery rather quickly. The app also lets you download photos off of the camera's memory card so you can edit them on your portable device. Again, this is a lot better than using the older app and wi-fi adapter with my Nikon D3300 DSLR. There are some negatives to this camera though. The buttons aren't weather treated so I don't recommend taking it out when it's raining (even light rain) or when it's snowing. That'sn't too big of a deal though. Nikon isn't advertising this as an action camera so it shouldn't be used as such. I wish the camera would shoot in RAW but it only does JPEG. Again, not that big of an issue seeing as how point-and-shoot cameras are mainly made for people who aren't going to be conducting advanced tasks. My biggest issue with the camera is that it uses four AA batteries. The battery life is alright, you can take about 600 photos before needing to replace the batteries. But still, in this day and age, and in a camera that's $250+, it should really have a rechargeable battery. Yeah, you can buy rechargeable AA batteries but Nikon should have put one of their batteries in this. The battery life would have at least been the same and their battery would have weighed less than four AA batteries and taken up less space. There's absolutely no reason for any digital camera in 2015 or 2016 to use AA or AAA batteries. That's why I removed one star in my rating. Now my wife has to worry about carrying four additional, rechargeable AA batteries (and their large charger) whenever we travel. Other than that, this is an excellent camera for beginners, for people who just want something that they can turn on and automatically take good shots, and for people who may want to eventually get a DSLR but want an inexpensive camera now which offers many of the settings in DSLR cameras.

Great Point & Shoot Cam under $300

I researched quite a few budget cameras before settling on this little beauty. The Nikon Coolpix B500 is just what I was looking for. It's compact and powerful. It has a 16 MP telephoto NIKKOR glass lens with 40X zoom. I literally caught a great image of a dog half a block away with great accuracy. I don't think I need it for that, but wow! It has a flash but the low light shots without the flash can be gorgeous. I bought it mainly for two reasons. 1) I wanted a good digital camera for short videos. I know I could easily use my smartphone, but I like to listen to music while filming and the playback stops if I use my phone. 2) I wanted something that could easily transfer images and videos from the camera to my computer. And this baby has wireless transfer via Bluetooth, NFC or WiFi. This also allows me to send those files to my smartphone. That's perfect on so many levels. It runs on 4 AA batteries ( I use rechargeable batteries. @@@@@@@ Also, considering that this shooter is almost 2 years old, at the time of this review. @@@@@@@@ release date: February 23, 2016) it still is more than relevant. 1080p full HD video and stupid crisp images. The view screen can be adjusted so you can get that awkward high up or underneath shots. I love this Camera at the price of $249.99 +tax. I highly recommend this camera to anyone needing a great point & shoot at a great price. Like I said, this is a 2 year old shooter and it's just lovely and comfortable to use. You will love this Cam.

I'm consider myself an amateur photographer, but I like to think I get off some decent shots every so often. After my old camera died after falling from my backpack, I was in the market for a new one like it but with a few extra features. I tried a Sony camera, but there was no way to control the macros. I exchanged it for this one and it was like night and day. This camera is really good and takes sharp pictures. There are also many different shooting modes that can yield some very artistic results, especially the Moon Mode which yielded some beautiful shots of... Well... The MOON. The zoom on this camera is like nothing I've ever seen. I've taken shots from miles away and zoomed in so close you would think I was about 20 feet away. Also, because this camera uses AA batteries, if I drain a set, I just replace them easily. While this camera does have a lot of features, some of them are pretty complex and difficult to understand. I recommend reading the manual online in order to get a full understanding as the included manual is only useful for getting started.

I bought this camera as a donation for a local fundraiser and I wanted to try it out and make sure it worked before donating it. I chose this camera specifically because I wanted the features to be aimed at beginners, yet still get quality pictures. As a more seasoned photographer I'dn't use this camera, I prefer an eyepiece, manual settings and RAW. A beginner who is used to using a phone for their pictures will find this camera easy to use and get good results in Auto mode. Zoom is good, not the best on the market but very usable. The fact that it takes AA batteries is a plus to me, you can buy them anywhere and you can buy rechargeable AAs easily as well, and you never have to worry about a camera-specific battery being lost or eventually failing. Picture quality is good overall, but really requires good light. This is ok for beginners, it will likely be used outdoors or with the built-in flash which is fairly powerful. There is not a lot of room to grow with this camera, no port for external flash, no attachments for the lens such as filters, etc. Again, a beginner wouldn't need these features, but for the beginner who wants to move forward and reach the next level the camera is limited. It looks good, takes good pictures, and is easy to use. I'd recommend this camera as a good "walkaround" camera for travel and snapshots!

I bought this just prior to going on a trip that I knew would involve great shots that I would cherish. I had read a few of the other reviews and was worried about the focus issues mentioned when zooming in and while I did have that issue once or twice I didn't find it to be a big problem. I loaded it with a 64 GB SD card so I would have a lot of room for pics; using the default resolution for pictures (I took over 1000!) barely put a dent in the storage...I only used just under 5 GB! The use of AA batteries was another reason I chose this camera - nothing sucks more than a rechargeable battery that dies on you and oftentimes "extra" batteries are expensive. The Duracell Ultras that came with the camera lasted for almost the entire trip, so about 1100 pictures including flash shots and short video snippets. The angled viewfinder was also useful for taking pictures over crowds and shots where it would have been awkward to kneel - I just angled the viewer up or down and was able to take perfectly framed shots. I was asked by someone "Why a purple camera?" and my response got a few head nods: "If the camera was stolen it would be that much easier to identify it!" How many people walk around with purple cameras these days? All in all I'm very happy with this camera!

This Nikon - COOLPIX B500 16.0-Megapixel Digital Camera is my first real camera purchase. This camera is easy to learn to use. I bought it to take action pictures for my boys soccer games. So much better than the camera on my phone. Takes great pictures and fairly well at action shots. If the kid is moving too fast, you might get a slightly fuzzy shot, but you can still tell what is happening. The mode for action shots is exciting because you can take 3-5 consecutive shots at the same time by how long you hold the button down when taking a pic. I do not like the fact that this camera does not have a rechargeable battery pack that can be purchased with it. You are stuck buying rechargeable AA batteries, and a specific kind, which means you have to buy a charging case to recharge the batteries. Overall, very happy with the camera. And I love the Plum color.

I purchased this as a supplement to carry with my Nikon DSLR. There are times when I have a zoom lens only with me and wanted the freedom to shoot close up or zoom. While my main camera does most of the work, this lighter weight camera is good to carry along. It can deliver sharp images from a distance, however I found the auto focus to be a bit weak. Even close up auto focusing seems a little weak. The screen size and ability to view at different angles is good, but you must be accustomed to using the screen only when composing a shot. Personally it is much easier for me to look into a viewfinder. Overall not a bad camera, but for the price, I can't recommend it as an only camera.

I purchased this camera for an e-commerce business. I did not want the hassle of learning a new hobby, I just needed very high quality, high resolution pictures. This camera has a lot of easy to use functionality that makes the set up for a photo simply selecting the proper setting and flipping up the flash. All of the first set of pictures were truly impressive, mostly due to the camera! This past weekend I used the tripod and zoomed into the full moon and was able to zoom so far, it filled the entire screen and I took some amazing shots of the craters on the moon with it! The ONLY issue I've had was the camera would not power up a few times. I took the brand new battery out, re-inserted the batteries, and it fired right up. Still using the original batteries fine so they had plenty of charge... I Highly recommended.this camera!

I relied on a store representative for advice matching my wants (high-quality point-and-shoot camera for an African Safari) and price range. I wanted ease of use so I did not have to work hard for fast, beautiful shots. The camera's 40x optical zoom is everything I needed, and the high MP resolution allowed even more close up views after cropping. I shot many subjects at greater than 100 yards, and the pics make it look like the animals were 10 feet away! I have also used the "Action" mode which does a burst of 7 rapid shots, and it will capture an athlete mid-air with no blur. The attached shot of a rhino was taken more than 100 yards out.

I am a novice photographer and wanted something easy to get started with. After reading countless reviews on this camera on both Best Buy and other webites, I decided to purchase it as a stepping stone between a fancy camera and basic one. It has a lot of bells and whistles that I will have to learn more about, but the pictures I have taken are incredible. They are everything I hoped for and more. The zoom is amazing and the clarity is so crisp, even with extended view shots. The pictures are crisp in the dark and the action mode has been a treat as well. I am anxious to put it on a tripod and take nature photos of birds, flowers, foliage, and other wildlife during my hiking trips.

I absolutely adore this camera! Nikon has always had good levels of cameras and while I wanted more than a point n click like I've always almost gotten but I wasn't quite sure if I was ready for a Dslr, this bridge camera is perfect! Great settings, great quality, camera strap is sturdy (wish it came with a wrist strap option but you can find them elsewhere), has a solid weight to it but not super heavy. AMAZING zoom! 80x, I get EXTREME close up shots of the moon, im talking about good pics of craters on the moon (it's basically like a telescope! @@@@@@@ . TOTALLY RECOMMEND!!!

I had a similar camera to this one, but a different brand. It was the most unpredictable thing. The photos could turn out blurry, but look fine on the screen on the back of camera when there are taken. I have had this camera for over a month and have never had a blurry photo. It's also easy to use and has a variety of functions that can be used. The one problem I have had is with the wi-fi, and the camera does not come with a cord to link it to a computer. To make matters worse Best Buy does not offer one either. They sold me a cord that they said would work, but it didn't fit the camera. I was able to get one online from another site, and it works just fine. Other than this, I have been very happy with this camera overall.

Nikon D500 great camera but is a shame that the wireless transfer program is not the best. Cannot transfer pictures half of the time. Had to transfer with a cardreader to a tablet. Half ot the feature that I got this camera for was the being able to transfer to social media with ease. The snapbridge app is very disappointing. Camera is excellent but not as advertised due to Nikon app for transferring is not up to grade. Frushtrating as I already had a Nikon L820.Tried SONY HX80 which at least would transfer photos as advertished and had great shots, however I exchanged for the Nikon for less shake. Disappointing about transfer app. Great camera.

I'm no pro photographer but I was looking for something better than my phone and an aging Bloggie camera I had, this one fits the bill. I can't talk much about settings, still trying to figure it all out, but it's simple enough for me to get some good shots and have a good time with. I picked the purple one because I thought it might be easier to track down if it ever got stolen. Some features I like most are the zoom getting distant shots clearly, the big screen on the back, and most importantly it transfers a 2 mb copy of the photo direct to my phone that I can use to send or post. It's a great camera for me and the photos are outstanding.

This camera is great for everyday shots. The picture is clear and the zoom works quite well, capturing an image without blurring the detail. There are many modes to figure out (some I don't quite get, like the creative mode--It seems geared towards teenage girls who like to distort pictures and add weird coloring--it's silly and unnecessary, but I guess you have to cater to them, too). I love the color--very nice deep purple, though the body is a bit bulkier than I like. Somewhat hard to get out of the case for a quick pic in the moment, but I overall love the power and clarity. Definitely worth getting!

Well I cannot claim to be a master photographer so I cannot give any technical advise on this camera. What I can say is that it is easy to use but if you want to get creative with your picture taking then make sure that you read your booklet so that you place the settings to accomplish what you want. I recently took my camera with me on vacation and I learned a few tricks that produced some very nice photo shots. I am looking forward to mastering the use of this camera but basically you need to just go for it and try different things with it. I am very happy with this camera! Has inspired to take better pictures.

I've had my eye on this camera for a while and finally decided it was time to get it. The clarity is way beyond my expectations. I wanted to get a little bit of practice using the different features, so I went around my yard photographing the flowers. (The zoom is incredible!!!) Once I downloaded them onto my computer, I could see the tiniest insects, or drops of dew on the flowers with unbelievable clarity! There is also a really neat feature where you can add makeup and enhance a photo of a person. There are a few other features which I'ven't used yet, but overall, I am absolutely pleased with the picture quality.

I bought this as a walkaround camera for when I don't want to carry the heavy DSLR and all those lenses. So far, it's been a nice, solid little camera. It's lightweight, takes clear, sharp photos, is simple to use, and has an amazing zoom. The only improvement would be if it had a viewfinder, but they seem to be putting those only on the DSLR cameras these days. Being able to brace the camera against my face, like I do with my DSLR, would make it easier for this shaky-handed old lady to get crisper shots. But overall, I would recommend it to anyone looking for an easy, fun camera with a great zoom that takes excellent photos.

This camera takes wonderful pictures. The zoom is really good. I took pictures of the sun rising at the beach, and was able to zoom right on the sun. Easy to use, the tilt screen helps with framing those angled shots. I was able to connect the Snap Bridge app to my android phone, and the pictures uploaded just fine while I was shooting and afterward. I mostly do landscape photos and this camera does well with all time of the day and even low light night photos. Able to capture great action shots as well. This is my fifth Nikon, and I love it.

Really pleased with camera. Easy to use with great options for pic enhancement. Glad it takes AAs, as I hate to be tied to a power source/outlet. Have no desire to transfer pics to phone or computer, so no concerns with interconnectivity. Battery cover does appear to be "touchy," but so far so good. Telephoto really does "reach out," and gives great results. Tried several sources to find camera in black, but did finally find at BestBuy and immediately bought it. Long reaching lens that takes high quality pics - a real winner for me!
