Dark/black bands at high zoom and fast shutter spe

After 2 cameras, 3 lenses (2 Nikon 70-300 mm kit lens, 1 Tamron 18-270 mm lens), 4 micro SD cards and multiple flashes, I can say for sure that this camera has a peculiar sensor issue that triggers in only a very selective lighting and capture settings. Chronologic events: - Bought the camera in late November to capture memories of kids and couldn't be happier! - Excellent photo shoot of ice skating show, very impressed! - Used non-Nikon flash during the capture of a school event and realized that top half to 3/4 of the image is bright while the bottom part is dark. Assumed that it was due to sync error with the flash and ordered a Nikon-compatible flash. It worked fine. (In the hind sight, I did not notice that all the captures were at high zoom: >70 mm and fast shutter speed: <1/125 and high iso: >3200) - Ordered a Tamron 18-270 mm lens so that I do not have to keep switching lenses (kids are agile enough to miss the moment while swapping the lenses). First try at 18 mm: good capture (slightly dimmer than kit lens, but good quality). Second try at 270 mm: good capture with a dark band at the top (horizontal band, not dark corners, i.e., vignetting). Another attempt: 3/4 of the bottom is black! Another attempt: top 1/4 is black: another: bottom half is black. - Switched to kit lens 70-300: Same issue at higher zooms and high shutter speeds. - Switched to kit lens 18-55: no issue whatsoever (couldn't get shutter speed high enough in A or aperture priority mode). Could not replicate in S mode with shutter speed <1/250 seconds either. - Swapped the memory card. Same issue. - Contacted Nikon support. They suggested to send it in for service and acknowledged that this is not a known issue for Nikon 3000 series cameras. - Since I am traveling, the support suggested to exchange the camera at the point of purchase (BestBuy) while marking returned product as defective, if within return policy. Luckily I was - and returned the camera and got another D3500. - Completely virgin camera - no flash attached, no lens attached (i.e., no chance of "infection"!) - Mounted 70-300 kit lens and the issue repeated! - Tried 3 other cards and the same issue! - Tried Tamron lens and the same issue! Attaching select pictures of the problem, since only 2 images are allowed. First one is zoomed out at 70 mm (shutter speed 1/160), no issues, and the second one is at 300 mm with bottom blacked out. I took the picture at 300 in burst mode and there are all kinds of blackout: complete, upper 1/3, middle strip, lower 1/3 (displayed) etc. Shutter speed was 1/500. Does anyone else have similar issue or can reproduce it? With 2 bad cameras, I am convinced it is a manufacturing issue and is evident in low, yellow light, likely from the top (chandelier?) Thanks!

I bought this camera to upgrade from a Nikon D40 which I traded in to put towards this purchase. I'm super happy with it so far. I recently started a small photography business and wanted something with more focus points (this has 11, the D40 had 3), a bigger screen (the d3500 is NOT a touch screen nor does it flip out), and this set came with a 70-300 mm zoom lens and the 18-55 mm for about $500. I think it's a great camera for the price for someone starting out that doesn't want to break the bank on a camera & lens kit. I have a 32GB memory card that I used with my D40. With the D40 it said I could store up to 4k RAW photos, but with the D3500 it says I can store only 1K. You may want to purchase larger memory cards for more storage space.

After recently purchasing this camera Nikon D 3500 it has change my photography life. It takes amazing shots and when I mean amazing I mean incredible amazing. You take pictures with no flash and you still have a clear image of what time front of you in a dark zone for example I went to Angels crest up in the mountains and I took the best photo shoot with my car at night. After getting approved for credit in Best Buy I have never been much happier to have great products from them and of course I’m gonna keep getting more because it’s worth it. But if you ever need a camera you know who to count on Nikon D 3500. Oh and by the way best part is taking pictures with your girlfriend with the best camera .

I have been waiting a while to get a new camera. Now that have bought this Nikon I couldn’t be any happier. It’s very user friendly and well made. It came with 2 lenses that will cover all your shooting needs (for now) and it also brought a storing bag (for free) . I have just slapped up into the DSLR world and this camera was the easiest to learn with because it shows you what happens to iso and aperture with the lens on the screen while you are adjusting the lens, it teaches you as you use it. Not to mention there’s a bunch of YouTube videos out there that you can learn from. I did my research before buying this camera and I’m so happy that I picked it. It’s great for landscape photography and does good with portraits as well. Totally recommend this camera to a beginner.

This camera is amazing. In all aspects of the word. It’s lightweight, extremely portable, and takes fantastic pictures. Everything is able to be changed exactly how you want. The possibility’s on this camera are endless. Night time shots (with a tripod, I suggest) are beautiful as well as beautiful daytime shots. This camera does it all. Only downside is that it DOES NOT link up with Capture One if you use that program. It is NOT a supported camera. But you are still able to import your photos and edit them perfectly fine with a .NEF to .DNG converter. Other than that, this camera is everything you pay for and more!

Used to have a SLR, at least 60 years old. Not automatic, had to carry light meter, etc. I loved it, but It used film and I moved away from it when digital point-and-shoots came out. On a recent trip to So Africa, I missed having a nice camera so started looking. This Nikon D3500 is good for someone like me who’s just getting back into the higher-end camera realm. It’s got a guideline mode to help you make decisions, it’s got Auto mode, and a bunch of other choices that I will learn over time. It’s not all that intimidating, but fortunately Best Buy has regular classes, which I will be availing myself of!

Camera takes excellent pictures with the provided lenses as long as there is enough natural light. In lower light situation it does better taking pictures of your subject with the flash if you are reasonably close to your subject. At a distance the flash just didn't seem to do the job so for distances in low light you may want to get a higher aperture lens to let more light in, a higher powered flash to attach to the camera or use it on a tripod. For the price, the camera, lenses, bag and accessories were a great buy. It was very easy to use right out of the box.

My cousin wanted a camera to take to him on a vacation trip, just to document locations and get a couple of shots. No need for a big expensive camera like the ones I use. I pointed him to this unit. You get to experience the workings of a DSLR in a small basic package. It's nice that it's bundled with two lenses so he can get some reach with the zoom lens. Don't buy this if you want to get serious about photography, you'd be wasting your money. Move up to the Nikon 7000 Series or even the Sony mirrorless systems for better photography. Overall, you get a lot for your money if you want to take pictures here and there and are not expecting fantastic results.

I thought there was going to be a learning curve, I have been using a fixed lens point and shoot for years. I took the camera out and charged the battery. It took great pictures once I read the instructions for focusing. The only draw back is the manual is over 300 pages and only available by download as a PDF. You would not believe the quality of the pictures. I zoomed in as far as my computer would let me and the picture did not distort.

Bought this for my wife for Christmas. She's not a professional or even an extremely experienced amateur but she's getting great pictures under a variety of lighting conditions. She' also finding the camera easy to learn and use. The second lens (70-300mm) made the kit quite a bargain during the pre-Christmas sales period. While the "free" camera bag doesn't provide enough room for both lenses, it does hold the camera with either lens. The "free" memory card the kit included ensured that she could start taking pictures immediately without having to buy additional items.

I wanted a decent and fast camera body to upgrade/update from my aging D60. I loved my D60. The D3500 is relatively inexpensive for a DSLR. It is fast and capable for an entry level DSLR that does quite a lot compared to older models. My biggest complaint is that it is a little light. Which, I know seems odd, but the camera does not rest on the body when placed on a table, it falls forward onto the lens, which is concerning for longevity of the lens connectors. Overall, recommend.

I purchased this camera deal in store as an upgrade from an older model by a different manufacturer. It seemed like a great option, as it was to include the camera, a pair of lenses to cover most needs, and a bag to carry it all. Unfortunately, while the Shutterfly credit that I'll never use was included, the bag was not. Now I'll have to get a new camera bag. Also, in the D3500, Nikon dropped the IR sensor for remote control. There is no wired remote port, and the camera does not support wi-fi. This leaves only bluetooth, which is insufficient in some circumstances.

After my old Sony digital camera that took floppy discs gave out on me, I tried one of my old Minolta 35mm cameras for a while. What a hassle! loading and then trying to find somewhere to get the film developed...and waiting. I purchased the new camera hoping that I would be pleased. Well, I couldn't be happier. It takes great stills and video with great sound quality. I have the best of both worlds now great pics and video! I highly recommend this camera.

I've been wanting a DSLR camera for a long time but didn't want to spend thousands of dollars to get one. After researching and wanting to really get into photography I decided to purchase the D3500 as my first DSLR. I am extremely satisfied with the camera quality and how clean the images look. Thanks to the affordability of the D3500 bundle I can definitely say I found a new hobby that I can enjoy for years to come. the Bag included with the bundle also seems to be of great quality.

This camera is amazing! In automatic mode I was able to get great shots, especially at Christmas time. I’m a beginner and am still learning the manual mode. I can’t wait to take more pics. People thought I got my holiday cards professionally taken. The price is great for a beginner. I was debating between this and the canon t7i but you can’t beat this camera for be price. Love the WiFi feature and have not had a problem getting pictures. Pretty simple and straight forward to use.

We purchased this camera in August for a big family vacation and it was amazing. All the pictures turned out great. We had so many ppl ask what kind of camera it was. It came with a short online course to show you how to use it and also an app to download the pictures you take via Bluetooth. Easy to use. Lens were easy to change also. Overall we just love the camera!

This is my first DSLR and I absolutely love it! There are a lot of great features for beginners or an intermediate user like myself stepping away from my point and shoot bridge camera into the world of DSLR's. The D3500 takes beautiful photos on both of the included lenses. Battery life is great as well. It's definitely worth it, couldn't be happier. Once I master all the features, I'm sure I'll love it even more lol.

I had bought this for a Christmas present since I like photography. Since my purchase of this camera I have taken more tha enough photos and began to learn more about angles and lighting. For starting out it is not a bad camera and I expect to continue with my hobby and grow more into it. The items that came with the camera for the deal we had gotten were worth the cost.
