New and Improved over the D3400

Had the D3400 for about two years and love the camera, so decided to get the new version, which is essentially the same camera. Everything works as expected. This is a great starter camera. And, Nikon does not disappoint. It has quality built into it. An added feature is that it now has wireless. But, for the most part, this is essentially the D3400, with a few tweaks. So, this review is basically for both cameras... The D3500 (or D3400) has a lot of great features. I prefer to use the Raw files, but you can get a lot of excellent photos using the Effects button. If you have PhotoShop, you can do similar later on, but if you have a good idea for visuals and don't have time for PhotoShop (or access to it), I recommend giving the Effects a try. I've gotten some "Wow" shots using it and the only downside is that they are jpg only (not raw), so what you see is what you get. Other than that, this is a good, dependable camera that will not disappoint, and it will provide years of reliable use if taken care of. Here's a photo that I just took today. Just a quick basic shot...

I actually bought this as a B-roll camera for some location video, and as the base DSLR in Nikon's lineup it has some significant limitations— especially for video. The lack of a microphone input is a bummer, and I miss having a Manual-Auto Focus switch on the kit lens, but having said that, the autofocus is much quieter than a similar but older Nikon 18-55 zoom I have. And since I record audio separately anyway (as anyone doing quality audio would) the lack of a mic input is not that big of a deal. For still photography it's really terrific— quite light and small, with some very intuitive automatic modes. And I LOVE the ability to override autofocus with a quick grab of the focus ring. Even at full price it's a great value, but when you get it on sale— it's a steal. One more thing: the face-tracking focus is really effective!

OK Camera but Disappointing in One Way

Pros: Photos as good as my Coolpix P600. Cons: No IR remote. I bought this camera on Black Friday with the 18-55mm lens as an upgrade from point-and-shoot cameras to a DSLR. I skipped the 70-300mm kit lens because it doesn't have VR, something that benefits telephoto lenses the most. A VR version of the 70-300mm lens is available and worth the extra cost. I'm disappointed that the ML-L3 IR remote that works with most Nikon DSLRs doesn't work with this one. Why would Nikon make a camera that requires a non-Nikon accessory like a smartphone in order to use all its capabilities? Even the new Coolpix P900 can use that remote. The new "special effects" option doesn't make up for the lack of the IR remote. Maybe they could bring back the mechanical cable release like I had on my Nikon film cameras.

Great all-around camera. More than enough bells and whistles for a beginner; there is a learning curve but plenty of "how-to" info is available. This is our first DSLR; decided to upgrade from point & shoot digital. Long ago we were manual SLR power users; it's hard getting used to the camera being so automated. We got it for taking high-quality photos of artwork and scenery. The quality of images is outstanding, very glad we made the investment! Feeling like this was a good value and we're just getting started. The 18-55mm lens that came with the body is just right for our needs.

I'm new to photography and needed a nice camera for taking pictures of my kids. This is great, fairly lightweight to What I thought it would be. I do want to mention there was no Manuel besides a one page paper telling you how to put battery in and attach lens. So I was clueless on what all the buttons meant and I still don't know what everything does. But it does take great photos! LOVE that there is a photo sharing and backup app so it's easy to save and share photos to a smartphone or computer with Bluetooth!

Read a bunch of other reviews before buying this camera. Was an anniversary gift and replacement to my wife’s older d40x she bought years ago. That camera is still nice, but the new one is lighter weight, has more modern features, and a very quiet and stable lens system. We took this on a trip shortly after purchase and it was nice to be able to take more shots on a single charge and the weight difference was definitely noticeable from the D40X. Nikon has always seemed a dependable brand for this type of camera.

I recently decided that I want to take up a new hobby. I went to Best Buy after having checked out a couple of cameras online. I am glad that I did go into the store as the Nikon D3500 seemed to be a better fit for me rather than the Canon Rebel T6. Both are entry level cameras, however the Nikon D3500 felt better in my hands. So far I have only played around with the camera trying to get more familiar with taking better photos. No complaints yet with this camera. The image quality is pretty great!

This was a replacement of a previously owned (15-yr-old) Nikon. Obviously the improvements over that time is leaps and bounds. Our older Nikon lenses work without issue. If you are in the mode that uses the back screen to view before taking picture, the shutter is rather loud and takes a bit longer between pics, as the shutter and mirror have to do extra steps -- but using the traditional eye-hole view is quick and quiet.

The color and clearance of the pictures is supper, I have the lens 18-55 and also lens 70 to 250 , both lenses gave me excellent details in the pictures I would recommend the Nikon D3500 DSLR camera, for portraits, casual snap shots, long distance shots (my pictures from the Moon eclipse were great).

I bought this camera because I was going on vacation in the mountains. I wanted to take good quality photos and this camera outdid good and made them great. The only thing I wish it would have came with was the second lens that zoomed in further. Other than that, the camera is a great deal and well worth the amount.

Great camera. Better quality than my cell phone. I am a more advanced photog but love the weight and the fact the lenses for all my Nikon cameras fit. It is really light weight but what really matter are the quality of the photos.. They are great.. I would suggest a swivel flash for a little more power.

This camera is simply stunning! We were looking for a camera that would keep up with our children in the cruise. It did not disappoint. We captured some of the best action shots imaginable. It looks heavy but it isn’t. We would definitely recommend the YouTube channel to little tips.

I asked a couple of friends who have higher end cameras on what to get my wife b/c she loves taking pictures. They recommended this camera to get. She loves it. She was able to figure out the basics pretty quickly and was able to start taking photos that same night after charging the battery.

Good entry level DSLR, the manual settings are very easily accessed and modified. The Guide mode is nice in getting base settings for certain shots but I usually change things up. The focusing seems to be a bit off at times and the pictures could be sharper but we are still learning.

Has SnapBridge to share as you go. Great feature. I played with the effects for the kids and got interesting results. Have to get used to controls on the right last camera they were on the left. The pictures are in the gallery. Had to take them with my cell phone.

Having used a point and shoot digital camera nearly 20 years, I decided to go for a dslr. No regrets about this choice, this camera has all the features someone new to this could need. Included lens is fine but will soon want to add additional lenses.

Great camera for a good price. Nikon makes great cameras and I needed a decent camera for being able to take pictures. That's where the D3500 comes in. With help from a family member who also owns a D3500, I was able to take pictures of what I needed.

Having had an entry level Nikon D40X for about 12 years, and many thousand pictures, it had to be replaced! I am most impressed with the many added features and quality of the pictures, with the D3500 and look forward to recording many wonderful memories!

The camera is easy to hold. It's not too heavy. Fits my hands perfectly. It takes amazing pictures. And it's easy to transfer from camera to cell phone. I'm an amateur, but I love this camera! Highly recommended.
