Purchased to replace my D3100. Takes great pictures. However, the auto focus is tricky in low light (not that low in my opinion). That is my only negative with this camera.

I absolutely love this camera. I actually bought a second one! Primarily I do wildlife photography using Nikkor 200-500 and 70-300 mm lenses. The only problem I've had is that one of the 5300's occasionally locks up and I have to remove the SD card and battery to reset it. Nikon offered to check it out for me (still under warranty) but it's so minor that it's not worth the hassle of sending the camera to them.

This is a terrific compact DSLR. The compact body means you have to depend on the menus to make many of your choices, but the menus are relatively easy for a seasoned photographer to understand. They might be a bit much for a beginner though. There are great auto and scene modes that would be perfect for beginning photographers, which would probably improve the quality of their photos while eliminating the need for them to muck around in the menus.
The WiFi works extremely well. You can use your phone as a remote, or use it to grab and email that great shot to a friend at the party that says "can I get that one?" You say yes and in a few seconds the friend is viewing it on their phone. It also is great for moving those photos to your tablet or laptop.
The battery life is not as good as it was with the D5000 but that could also be because I am testing out all the features like WiFi and GPS. I still wish I could adjust exposure compensation while in auto modes. The "sports" scene works well for that hockey game but the ice is muddy because the scene needs compensation. This forces me to either forego the auto modes, or clean it up in software. ThIs seemingly obvious oversight makes it feel like an engineer designed the camera rather than a photographer.
Video seems gimmicky for this kind of camera, but I must admit it is easy to use and works very well. Of course, the built-in HDR is also a cool option.
The low light capability is improved over the D5000 but still not as good as many old high-end film cameras.
Overall, I would give this 9 out of 10 stars based on my skill level and needs. Overall a great camera and highly recommended.

My wife is a Nikon person with few exceptions. This replaces her D5000 and provides better resolution with the higher pixel count. she loved the upgrade.

I love this camera. It takes great shots, worthy of praise from the pros. It is easy to use, menus are easy to understand and it is full of features. I recommend reading "from Snapshots to Great Shots" for the D5300 to learn the full potential of this camera.

This is a great camera. Takes beautiful pictures, has lots of features. I mostly got it to use as a "permanent" camera on my 200-500mm lens so i wasn't switching back and forth with my normal lenses as that things a beast and it's a little cumbersome to put on and off.

This camera does a lot! So much to learn but taking it step by step. Taking action shots of our grandson playing baseball. Beautiful pics! A lot of camera for the money. Had a Nikon point & shoot before this one which was great.

A great camera to learn on but still take quality pictures. More compact than equivalent Canons, has 24mb sensor for HQ images, easy to navigate, manual mode is quickly learned. Pairs well with 35mm 1.8 Nikon prime lens

Just a basic review:
I upgraded from a Canon Rebel T5i to the Nikon D5300 (yes this is def an upgrade) and all I can say is the difference is amazing.
The photos are more crisp even with the kit lens it comes with. There are not as many buttons like the rebel so on some things you have to go into the menu but once you get in there it's a breeze to find anything you need easily.
I love that I can do most of my editing from my camera even the RAW format because I do not have any photo editing software that can edit RAW files, and with the wifi i can easily transfer the photo to my iphone or laptop and upload it.
The wifi is great! I've used my iphone as a remote for my camera, i can zoom in using my phone and snap the photo and not worry about any camera shake even on a tripod. The wifi is easy to use and it connects quickly, i have not had any issues at all and have not lost connection.
The viewfinder is clear, and the live view screen is very clear as well (but i do not use the live view i look through the viewfinder).
This also has in camera HD processing! You can create a lot of custom settings.
It takes great photos at higher ISO, I've not gone past 800 though, there is a little noise but nothing that takes away from the photo or makes the photo look bad.
As for video, I cannot speak to that because I do not take video with it.
The battery life for me is great and I take a lot of photos when I'm and i do not own a second battery.
This camera I believe is great for beginners and advanced because there is so much you can do with it. I have a friend who is advanced semi pro and he uses the D5300 more than his Canon Mark 5. Side by side the photos beautiful with very little difference on the same settings, though having the full frame sensor canon does have its pluses, if it's out of your price range or any of the Nikon full frames are as well, the D5300 is a great camera with amazing features that can create amazing images.
I love this camera and since I do not plan on going pro, I do not see myself upgrading to a full frame anytime in the near future because there just isn't a need with the quality this camera puts out, and believe me, I'm very picky about how an image comes out.
I purchased from Best Buy because it was the lowest price I found and you receive membership rewards points with your best buy card!
